When renewing a license plate sticker in Illinois, you'll first have to take your car to a Vehicle Emissions Testing site. There's 11 stations throughout the city/suburbs as well as some self-serve kiosks which I didn't know about until now. Most locations also have a counter inside to buy said sticker. This testing facility is tough to find, it's tucked away in an industrial area about 1/2 mile west of Cicero Ave. There's plenty of testing lanes to pull into, so if you encounter a wait, it should be a brief one. The guy who checked my car gave me piratey truck driver vibes (and I mean that in a good way). While the testing itself only took 3 minutes, the wait for a sticker was quintuple that--I waited nearly 10 minutes outside in a drizzle plus another 5 inside. The plate renewal fee was $151, plus a $10 service charge which I'm not a fan of. Maybe that helps pay the wages of the folks who work here? Maybe it's just Illinois being greedy. * TL;DR * 11 years - and 100K miles - later my car still passes an emissions test, thankfully. Illinois state law requires all cars & trucks to get a checkup every two years. Speaking of which, when was the last time *I* had a checkup? Between the leaking fluids and the flashing indicator lights, I really ought to have someone go under my hood and make sure things are hunky-dory. Emissions testing is far from sexy, but it's gotta be done if you want to keep driving that jalopy of a car (I'm talking to you, owner of the beige '96 Mercury Sable missing its front bumper).

This is required for all residents of Illinois, I usually go to less busy locations in the South…read more Recommended to go in the AM. Majority of the locations are very fast to get tested the longest that you are away from your car is less than 5 minutes. I like that you can purchase plate stickers onsite and not another line to purchase.

Not sure why this location closed down, but I am so happy it is open. And another wonderful surprise is that they have a self-testing kiosk. I decided to give it a try since it was 5:50 pm and no one was there. Overall, the entire process took about 5 minutes from start to finish. Apparently there are only three of these self-testing kiosks in the Chicagoland area and this location is one of them. The other two are located at: 9901 S. Martin Luther King Drive, Chicago, IL - Illinois Secretary of State Chicago South Facility 2560 W. Cermak Road, Chicago, IL, As I was not sure what to expect on using this self-testing kiosk, I was glad no one was behind me. I always bring my emissions test notification with me whenever I go in for testing, and I am glad I had it with me as you need it. The self-testing kiosk requires you to enter the VIN number and fortunately there is a barcode that allows you to scan it in instead of manually entering it. You are going to have to connect your car to the self-testing kiosk using the cable attached to it. This is to be connected to your vehicle's Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC). I know where mine is located because I have watched the technicians plug into it. That said, you can go to YouTube to see if there is a video for your vehicle type. You can also read your owner's manual, but I don't actually keep that in my car. If you have never located your DLC, do so before hitting up the self-testing kiosk so you know exactly where you are going to be connecting your car to. The nice thing about the self-testing kiosk is it is open 24/7, so you can go anytime you wish. And while the self-testing kiosk is great, I am not sure how fast things will go if there are multiple folks waiting to use it, or if they are not fully prepared for the experience. Overall, this was an excellent experience, and again I am so happy this location is open again for business.

Here are a couple of pro-tips if you want to try the self testing kiosk.  First, bring the test notification with you so you can simply scan the code instead of doing a lot of typing of your VIN when you register.  Secondly, look at YouTube, and make sure you know where the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) is on your car.  Mine was deep under the dash by my parking brake and I never looked down there before, but sure enough there it was.  You don't want to be fumbling around looking for it for the first time while in line.  There is only one self testing kiosk, and if there are 3 - 4 cars in line, it may not be worth the wait, but the kiosk is available 24/7 which is a big plus for some I'm sure.  Overall, great experience, and this will be my go-to location for my future emissions tests.
