I visited Koa Pancake House recently at around 12:30 pm in the afternoon. This restaurant is open from 6:00 am-2:00 pm daily. While I was eating, one of the workers started to put the chairs up on the tables that weren't being used. She then proceeded to start sweeping under the chairs. I see two problems with this poor practice. The first one is when I walk into a restaurant with chairs on the tables, I turn around and leave because it appears they are closing soon and it also limits my choices of where I can sit. The second issue is while she is sweeping the floor, all the dust and filth becomes airborne and is now landing on my food. This is totally unsanitary and they should cease this practice immediately. If they close at 2:00 pm, they should start cleaning up after they are closed, not while customers are in there. This is not the first time I have seen this here. It is a common practice for these employees. Update: After they received this poor review, the employees stopped doing this and clean up after they close. Great Job. Update: 10/20/15. Went to Koa on 10/13/15 at 1:00 pm for my delicious hamburger deluxe and was totally upset to find a "new" employee sweeping and mopping half the restaurant while customers were eating their food. Unfortunately the Mothers Day breakfast that we planned was ruined due to their unorganized system and poor customer service. I utilized their online ordering system the day before with hopes of picking up our order in the morning. On my order confirmation it stated to call the number when outside. I called several times and it seems that their phone was off the hook. I stood in line for 15 minutes to be told that they could not find my order. After waiting another 30 minutes, I checked to get a status on my order and received attitude from the staff basically stating that they still need to work on my order. During this time I received no apology and assumed that after they asked me to wait on the side half an hour prior that they were working on my order. I finally asked for a refund and they somehow found my order. However they could not give me my refund as they stated that only the owner of the company could give me a refund. It's a shame that during this time with Covid, there are many restaurants shutting their doors. We try our best to support and now regret coming here. Awful, awful all around. 7:30am on a Sunday, I order macadamia pancakes and was told "our grill is down, we can't make pancakes." Thinking, well, you're a pancake house, this is odd, I ordered banana french toast. My husband's sweet bread french toast came out and then my "banana" french toast came out 10 minutes later, after he asked its status and was rudely told "it's coming, sit down". Not only that, but the servers around me delivered 5-7 other plates of pancakes to others sitting around us. When we asked, we were told the grill was only "temporarily down" So much for the "grill" being down, right? The french toast was flavorless - literally just an egg wash and grease. The banana? Sliced and thrown on top - not cooked inside. Waste of an extra dollar. The most unreal part - the waitress went around to check on every other table and offer drink refills except ours. We were the only white couple in there - is this a coincidence or quiet racism against two people who live across the street? Coincidence that I'm the only person you refused to serve pancakes to while the grill worked for everyone else? Unreal dining experience - you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves. read more

My husband and I have eatten here several times. We had company from the mainland and this couple is very picky We like it, lunch items aren't very good but the breakfast is hard to beat. Our mainland couple liked it enough to eat there more than once. We almost always take out the food, but my brother and husband have eatten there. Ugh. I went in for breakfast and ordered corned beef hash with eggs over easy and fried potatoes. The potatoes came fried so hard on the outside that I couldn't slice my fork through them--they were like little rocks. When I called the manager over, he was rather lackadaisical in his apology but offered me toast instead (which never arrived). I then cut into the eggs and the WHITES (not the yolks) were runny, clear and uncooked. I couldn't catch anyone's eye, so I took the plate up to the counter. The manager told me they could do it over and I that I should order my eggs over medium to make sure the whites were were cooked. Well, hello--the WHITES are *always* supposed to be cooked even when you order eggs over easy. But no one offered to make it right. I'm normally a tolerant restaurant customer with low demands (I have many family members in the business), but when you can't even get basic breakfast food right--and when the manager does nothing to correct an obvious faux pas (I never did get my promised toast), something's seriously wrong. Since I ended up eating nothing, it would have been reasonable to comp or replace my meal, but that didn't happen either. It's bad enough to screw up so majorly, and double bad when the manager does nothing to correct obvious major glitches. And just a heads up if you're thinking of eating here anyway: It's a fast food joint, not a "pancake house." You order at the counter and you get your food on paper plates with plastic cutlery and styrofoam cups. You can frankly do just as well at McDonald's, and better at Zippy's. A sad, sad excuse for a breakfast place, and probably a health department violation if they're sending out raw eggs. read more

exactly as yelp has it Woohoo! As good as it gets! Meanest Scottish sausages and bacon egg omelet. GF didn't think it was the best but she had the banana pancakes. I told her to try the coconut milk but she refused. Definitely put it up with best breakfast places here. Best service got my food about 2 minutes after we got back to our seat. Nothing fancy, but two of us split an omelet and it came with three pancakes- we upgraded to blueberry. Pancakes were light and fluffy, good customer service, easy in and out. You order at the counter and then grab a seat. Paper plates and plastic utensils. Coffee is pretty good. All in all it exceeded my expectations! read more

I love eating from this place but it seems like the workers forget about people trying to make phone orders. It's so packed inside the restaurant that we always order takeout but when I call, I get put on hold and just forgotten about. I waited 10 minutes just listening to the workers talk bs to each other and take the orders of customers inside the restaurant. I try calling back but because the girl just put the phone down and off the hook to put me on hold, the line would be busy. This has happened to me more than once at this location. Used to frequent the Kaneohe Koa so was really excited when their 7th location opened in my new 'hood. The restaurant is smallish and all food is ordered at the counter for takeout or eat in, if you're lucky enough to snag a table. Service is FAST. When we got there, all the seats were occupied but there was no line to order, but after we ordered, we were able to grab a table and then a line to order stretched all the way to the door. I was commenting to my husband what lucky timing we had, but then I noticed the order line went down pretty quickly and other tables emptied out in a timely manner also. Our food came out pretty fast and we were able to enjoy our meal and vacate the premises just as another long line started to form at the counter. There's not much of a waiting area if you're taking your food to go but then again, it does come out fast so you won't be waiting long anyhow. The food is just OK but for the prices, I can't complain. We paid $12 for 2 breakfast plates and were still full come lunchtime. What I really like is how you can choose pancakes as your starch with the breakfast entrees. You can also choose the standard rice, potatoes or toast, but the pancakes are hot and fluffy and quite filling so you get the most out of your money. I have always loved the Koa Pancake house in Kaneohe, so I was excited to see one open near my home in Hawaii Kai. I orderred Eggs Benadict, which were the worst I have ever been served. The meat was dry and overcooked like leather. The potatoes were both over and undercooked. The "starbucks" coffee was bitter with a stange taste. Other peoples french toast and pancakes looked good. the food was reasonably priced and it was delish. the first time i went there i got the meat jun and i have to say its one of the better meat juns I've tasted. the second time i got the Portuguese sausage eggs and rice. their Portuguese sausage is different then what I'm used to but it was actually really good. the only thing is there needs to be more seating because it got pretty cramped. other than that i love it. read more

Koa Pancake House delivers a great breakfast at a good price. The downsides are things like no table service, paper plates, and really bad coffee. Not a big deal, especially since they don't seem to mind if you bring in your coffee from home or Starbucks, a few doors away. And the good things much outweigh the bad. I usually order banana pancakes & bacon & it never disappoints. The orange & coconut syrups are delicious. I have been here a number of times with one of my friends. We always somehow come in 45 min before closing or so. It isn't intentional but the employees show us utmost respect and treats us with kindness. I usually ask them if it's ok, I hate prolonging anyone's time in their workplace and they don't seem to mind. The reason I give them 4 stars is because of the food. It's good mind you, but it lacks something. But I will say my friend loves their mushroom burger and fried potatoes. It's why we go there all the time. I'm impressed with it but I'm not a burger person so I always get something new. I will say this Koa Pancake house is the cleanest and nicest one I have been to, even when I've come in earlier than their closing times. And while I do go down memory lane by getting can corned beef with running eggs (Filipinos I'm sure knows what I mean- well at least my grandma would make it) and mash it together for an amazing meal. Or I sometimes get a waffle or pancakes or something else. It's good, but the price sometimes ... not worth it when I get it cheaper at McDonalds and it tastes the same. Minus the waffles and crepes or the meal that goes down memory lane. I guess it just means I need to know where exactly I should spend my money on. Giving them two stars mostly for service. For the past two years been hitting this place up given it was convenient, cheap, and edible but the past three months it has gone to hell. They have given me the wrong order twice and while they replaced it, was inconvenient as had to drive back; the other two times parts of the order were wrong or missing condiments which they normally provide (I.e. no butter or forks). Food quality hasn't changed, still inferior diner food which somehow passes for good only in Hawaii but with the recent constant service problems, think I am done with this particular location. read more

This review is for food and service only: How excited I was to finally see a breakfast joint in Hawaii Kai. There aren't many options other than McDonalds,Burger King and L&L when it comes to breakfast in this area. P and I walk in and it's a full house. That should be a promising sign, right? Wrong! I order the eggs benedict with potatoes which is a "specialty" of this place and P orders corned beef hash and eggs with fried rice. He also orders and extra egg and side of bacon. Let's start off with my order. First, let me say that my favorite breakfast item is eggs benedict but seeing that I'm not at a fancing schmancy place I'm not expecting that much except to get the order correct. I open my plate to see a heaping mound of rice (which they charged me extra for) covering my eggs benedict. Strike 1! I'm thinking "that's ok, I can do with rice." Time to cut into the eggs which should have the yolks runny so they ooze onto the muffin. Strike 2! Eggs are pretty much hard boiled and rubbery. Uggh!!!! How did P's breakfast turn out? Let's see, we got charged for an extra egg that he didn't get and paid for bacon that was almost all fat. Strike 3! Now, I'd like to say maybe they were new and trying to work out the kinks but they've been open for a few months now. Maybe they were busy but come on, they are a breakfast joint and should expect that. The only thing that comes to mind is that the cooks in the back don't read orders and don't care about the quality of food that comes out of the kitchen. Can I suggest Restaurant Makeover? Where is Robert Irving when we need him? It's no surprise that I won't be going back again. Visited Koa Pancake House in Hawaii Kai and got take out on Sunday morning. The place was very busy, but it was Sunday morning, so expected. Got home with our order and realized they had left off the side order of pancakes...not happy and don't feel it my job to QA the order before it goes out the door, but will from now on. The food was ok, nothing special. As one reviewer said, you get what you pay for. My husband had the special omelet with potatoes...they were dry. RIP OFF!! I am only complaining about their website menu and pricing. As a business owner myself I understand the necessity of having updated information on your own website. They do not. Wanted to eat breakfast in the middle of the afternoon. My husband had a sandwich, I had banana pancakes. The food was ok for what it was. The price was reasonable, and the wait wasn't long. The thing that got me was there customer service. Every single employee that was either behind the counter, or on the floor wiping tables had a smile on there face. I went there prior to work looking for something for breakfast. I ordered scrambled eggs and corned beef hash. Sounds so good, the only problem was that I didn't know I was getting an order of salmonella poisoning with it. Not sure if it was from the eggs or the corned beef hash (since they mix it with eggs) but a few hours later it started. Went to the doctors the next day and found out it was salmonella poisoning. It was the only thing I had eaten in the past two days. Thank you, I'll never be eating there again! read more

2 stars because the service was poor. The food is good and consistent. We've tried their omelets, pancakes and waffles and they are all good. Unfortunately, I went here to pick up food for Mother's Day so , of course, it was very busy. Hoping to beat the crowd, or at least cut down the waiting time, I place my order the day before. We went down at the pick up time, paid, and waited. 5 minutes, 10 minutes; people coming up to the counter to ask where their food was. 20 minutes, 25 minutes. The staff is calling out order numbers to pick up the food. When people that came after us started getting their food, I lost it. I went to the counter and told the cashier who just apologized and made no effort to check on our order. A man behind the counter told me that the food is coming out as fast as it can, in other words, "just wait." When I repeated that people who came after us has gotten their food and we had place the order the day before, he had nothing to say to that. He never did apologize for the delay and didn't even offer us anything, like a drink, for waiting.
