My family loves their mochi waffles when they make it right. I've been ordering their mochi waffles for over a year now. Maybe even 2. They are my absolute favorite thing to eat when we order takeout. We don't usually it in at any restaurant even before Covid. The other food I've tried is ok. But lately, I've been getting over burnt mochi waffles. Once, I actually called to complain because it just tasted flat out bad and even when I picked up the order, the waitress apologized for it looking dark but it should taste ok. It didn't. And I'm pretty lenient and don't complain when my food isn't cooked right. But this time, I had enough. We ordered 2 mochi waffles and both were burnt and as usual, when you lift the waffle out of the container, the heat from the waffle melted the bottom of the container. This time was the worst. I honestly don't know why I have been continuing to eat it even though it came out of a melted styrofoam container. That can't be healthy at all but like I said, I'm lenient and it was my favorite so I guess I took those chances. Anyways, I don't think we'll be ordering from them anymore so I didn't think to call to complain again. But maybe they should start putting a layer of parchment paper and stop burning the beat thing on their menu. read more

No lie here - five stars for the pancakes. Those suckers are fluffy with an ever so slight hint of fruit. They don't need syrup, or even butter really. I genuinely enjoyed them on their own. Even better, a short stack (3 pancakes) is like $5, and I could probably be full on that alone. Another pro - the food came SO quickly, I wasn't even prepared for it (a huge pro if you're getting your food to go!). So why three stars? I got a side of bacon and 2 eggs with that, which cost $8 (I don't know, that seems a little ridiculous to me). Also, the restaurant is open seating, so there's no promise you'll have a place to sit when you order. We had to wait and got lucky that a family was leaving and offered us their seat. Also, because it was so busy and confusing, our pancake order didn't come out correctly. Not a huge complaint - I ordered chocolate chip, my friend ordered blueberry instead of the normal buttermilk that came with her omelette, and we ended up with buttermilk and blueberry, no chocolate chip. This is a small diner with a walk-up counter in a strip center. Prices were reasonable and had large portions. I had the spinach mushroom omelette and it was good. I am a sucker for good customer service. The management and the staff at this place definitely surprised me in a good way. After walking out of Ihop because of the staff's poor customer service, I dragged my daughter to Koa Pancake House. We placed our order and sat down at a table for two. While we waited for our food, a female customer grabbed the hot sauce at a vacant table next to ours. Unfortunately, the previous occupant did not screw the cap on properly. As she grabbed the glass bottle, it fell from her hands and landed on the floor. Luckily, the bottle didn't shatter but the hot sauce splashed all over the floor, including my daughter's hair and clothes and the lady's eyes. That poor lady's eyes were burning. She ran to the bathroom and flushed her eyes with running water for a long time. She can be heard crying and yelling for her husband to help her. I guess the manager heard what happened because as we were eating our meal, I saw her hand the lady a gift card to Koa Pancake. I'm not sure if she comped their meal as well, but I was impressed with how she handled the situation. She didn't have to give the lady a gift card, especially since it wasn't the restaurant's fault the customer got hot sauce in her eyes. The manager's genuine concern and her offer to make the unfortunate situation a little better for the customer really impressed me. She represents the company in such a positive way. People come to a restaurant for the food, but good customer service will keep them coming back. I spoke to the manager and found out her name is Tess. While my daughter and I finished our meal, my daughter's plastic fork broke and a staff member replaced it right away without us asking for another one. It just so happened that the staff member was looking our way and noticed what had just happened. I usually go for the pancakes because 90% of the time I come here on my "cheat meal" of the week, but every once in a while I switch it up with eggs or Portuguese sausage or some Bangers. The menu is large, and the atmosphere is chill, it can get busy depending on what time. All of the times we went, we never had to wait for seating. If you notice, they all start with "I expected ..." or "I assumed ..." and one reviewer (from da mainland) even had the nerve to compare Koa to IHOP. Note: Koa is NOT a Hawaiian spin on IHOP. It's not even close. That's like calling Taco Bell a Mexican version of Ruth's Chris just because they both happen to sell steak in some form. Koa is not IHOP because it sells more food for less money without the frills (and sometimes long wait) that comes with IHOP. Get over it! And here is the problem with expectations: They lead to disappointment. I have eaten at this Koa at least six times and I have not had a single issue with the food or service. Every time I was served more food than I could finish. The coffee is great, the workers are nice, and I might be addicted to the coconut syrup. Three stars because Koa is A-OK (just like IHOP). Husband wanted to go out for breakfast. I'm not picky but I want healthy food, I just can't compromise and eat junk food. I get that this is a greasy spoon kinda place but I'm trying to be low maintenance hoping for at least a couple good options. I also make it a point to tip really well knowing most wait staff work really hard. Didn't see a single healthy item on the menu. Maybe I missed it but I had to ask what they had "off menu." Even ordering scrambled egg whites, there's no guarantee it won't be swimming in oil/butter from being on the same grill as everything else. So I ask if there's a fresh fruit option. Apparently not, they have a fruit salad but its made with pre-frozen fruit. Finding myself cornered and hungry I agree to the fruit salad and order wheat toast. Blueberries are shriveled and icky, strawberries are syrupy mush, only thing edible were the banana slices. Toast came slathered with butter, menu said nothing about butter. I'd assumed it would come with pats of butter and little packs of jam. Took it back to the waitress apologizing for being difficult but asking for butter free toast. She was not happy with me and when I asked if she wanted to take the toast from me she rolled her eyes, made a snarky comment, and dumped it in the trash right there. I felt bad, I was trying to be really polite about it. So ended up filling up on water, new toast, and a few slices of banana. Went home hungry. Hubby enjoyed his moco loco though. If you want the big greasy spoon breakfast then this should be fine. I'll probably have to go back because it's the nearest breakfast place we know of but I wouldn't choose it myself. Finally stopped by Saturday morning to try their breakfast. I got the crepes, husband got a spinach and cheese omelet and daughter got (big shocker here) the chocolate chip pancakes. 4.5 stars: Fried rice is good, but not always cooked the same. Sometimes has less taste but overall all the menu items I've tasted is good. There are multiple chains of restaurants around the island and always busy regardless of which location you go to. Most likely because of such diverse menu from waffles to pancakes to spuds to rice, accomodates all types of taste palettes. On my "low carb" strict days, I order side of Mahi and share a vegetarian omelette with mom while she eats pancakes or fried rice. On my cheat day, I order fried rice or blueberry pancakes with mahi mahi and overeasy eggs. Ohhh just writing this review makes me hungry for breakfast food. I've had an omelet (which was huge!), I've also tried the chocolate chip pancakes (amazing!) and the corned beef hash (also amazing). I've not been disappointed yet. Their coffee, while small, is also pretty good! I just wish I could get a bigger cup!
