I visited Kolache Factory today. First time here and unfortunately left very disappointed. The food is not made fresh to order -- everything sits under heat lamps, and several items weren't cooked properly. I could clearly see raw, unbaked dough on some of the kolaches, which was unappetizing. The potato and egg kolache I tried also had tomato in it, which wasn't mentioned anywhere on the menu or by the staff. There wasn't much information available about drink options either, which made ordering more difficult than it needed to be. On the positive side, the customer service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. However, the food quality issues overshadowed everything else. First time trying Kolaches, and as a sweets fiend, I was looking for the classic jam variety (and also needed delivery to downtown, as I was biz travelin). This Czech specialty is not represented in my hometown, so I had to try it here in Spurs country. Kolache Factory was up to the challenge, and hooked me up with a peach Kolache, a cherry Kolache and an apple strudel. The Kolache pastry itself was soft and very mild in flavor but the jammy center was fantastic - fresh and flavorful peach compote tasted homemade. The cherry version was also good, and featured a pleasingly tart tang. Finally, just for fun, had to sample the apple strudel. I liked the flaky pastry consistency better than the Kolache base, and was positively surprised by the strong cinnamon spice flavors mixed with sweet and tender macerated apple. Recommend this place if you're interested in sampling San Antonio's Czech baking tradition delights. read more

I tried out Kolache Factory this morning for breakfast and ordered in the drive thru. When I approached the line there was one car in front of me and I honestly hadn't pulled up a menu on my phone to check it out. Once it was my turn the person on the intercom was so patient as I checked out the menu to see what my family would want. Thankfully I didn't have any cars behind me. I got a jalapeño, cheese, and sausage kolache for myself that was the right amount of spice and the bread was soft. It's bound to be one of my go to's. We absolutely love the kolaches here. They are always warm, fresh, and delicious. Our favorites are the cream cheese kolaches, and the quality of the food is the reason we continue coming back. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 5 is the customer service experience when ordering larger quantities. We typically order 5-6 cream cheese kolaches at a time, and we've noticed that the tone on the phone often changes when we place those orders. At times it feels like there's frustration or annoyance, which can make the interaction uncomfortable. We completely understand that fresh items may not all be ready at once, and we're more than happy to wait. What has been frustrating is that we've occasionally been told there aren't enough available, only to arrive and find that they actually do have them. It sometimes feels like we're being discouraged from ordering or waiting for the remaining kolaches. The food is fantastic, and we truly enjoy supporting this location. To be Frank, i only come to this place for the pizza kolache. In the past this place used to serve a decent amount of pepperoni with cheese. Nowadays you'll be lucky if a staff member who's making them puts enough pepperoni. I've driven by over the years and have been intrigued. I love kolaches. And was hoping that the variety provided here would hit the spot. The service was lackluster, at best. We went right when they opened and the girls at the front seemed bored. I was excited to try this place out- I was hoping from some recommendations, at the very minimum some energy. Blah. They didn't seem to be fully stocked, despite just opening and the whole time I stood there, I tracked a fly flying all around the exposed kolaches. The kolaches weren't anything amazing. I've passed by this place daily and haven't stopped by until now! If you ever get the chance, COME TRY THIS PLACE OUT! I am so happy I got to get a few of their kolache's!! I can't say how the dining area is because I did drive through, but drive through was quick!! Prices were fairly decent as well, around a buck and change to two bucks and change, not terrible at all!! We've never had a kolache before, so we figured why not?! If you don't know what a kolache is, it is a roll stuffed with whatever filling the store has to offer. I learned that there are many different styles of kolaches, but the ones here looked like a warm palm sized dough stuffed with yummy goodness! My husband and I got the chicken enchilada, 2 of the sausage and gravy, ham and cheese, sausage cheese and jalapeno and spicy Italian chicken. Every single pastry I got from this place was exceptional , soft and fluffy. There are so many options. The sausage and gravy was my absolute favorite. We ordered about 20 Kolache's since we had my mother over for the holidays. We tried the Bacon egg and cheese , Potato egg and cheese ( filled with a good amount of potato) , chorizo egg and cheese ( definitely has the chorizo flavor) , the bbq brisket ( second favorite Kolache) , ham & Swiss was pretty good! The savory kolaches is where it is at here! I choose the sausage jalapeño & cheese and the sausage & gravy kholaches. Sweet rolls on the outside and delicious filling on the inside. You aren't going to find a better way to put a smile on your face in the morning. The sweet kolaches weren't as mouth watering as the savory ones but not bad. I'm glad we got a couple different flavors to try because some of them were incredible while others were just flat out disappointing. I'll start out with the ones I wouldn't get again: anything chorizo or their pizza one. The chorizo one was the worst, we actually didn't even finish that one and just tossed it instead. Chorizo to me has a distinct taste and I'm not sure what was in it but it didn't taste like what it was supposed to be. Pizza was okay, the pepperonis made it very greasy on the bottom so the dough got that raw undercooked type texture. I personally can't handle that flavor/ texture so this one is a definite no for me. Philly one was good to me, but, it's mainly meat, peppers and onion. It's not loaded with cheese like one might think. Just keep that in mind. The other flavors however were INCREDIBLE. Ham and cheese was a perfectly balanced salty/ cheesy explosion, the sausage and gravy was bursting with flavor and nostalgic which is always a good thing. The jalapeño popper one though; bless. That one is thick, it's creamy, it's the best one we tried and I will definitely come back here and get 3 of those next time instead of one. I also would skip the Texas sausage things. The sausage part itself is good but it was just a lot of breading in comparison to the sausage. We were actually able to rip off about an inch of bread along the side and still wrap it around the sausage. Staff was also okay. They weren't the nicest but they got the job done and answered questions without seeming annoyed when we had them. I would for sure come here again. read more

After numerous recommendations, I stopped by early in the morning to get some hot, fresh kolaches. Being it was my first time, I asked how they sell them- individually, pairs, box of six or twelve, and the young lady behind the counter said they can be ordered any way, but a dozen is most common. I went with a variety box of one dozen. They definitely carry a wide variety of options for filling, everything from savory things to fruits, and unique items like sausage gravy and bbq brisket. I selected my twelve. That's twelve round balls of bread stuffed with... well, "stuff." Twelve. Two were free because, as the young lady mentioned when she rang me up, there was some sort of "special" that day, so ultimately I paid for ten. That's 10, in numeric form. In dollars form, I paid $34. In word form, that's thirty-four, and it's a whole heckuva lot of money for kolaches! The place was empty (I was the only person there) but it was clean and well-stocked with kolaches and other pastries. Some of the kolaches I bought were better than others, but none of them were good enough for $34. Needless to say, I have no intention of going that far out of my way to pay $34 for kolaches- not theirs or anyone else's. I've bought a lot of kolaches in this city, none were even close to $34 but a lot of them were better than these. $34!! read more

I was expecting your typical kolaches such as sausage or sausage and cheese which they do have but boy did they get creative with the variety of fillings to choose from. So for breakfast they offer potatoe and egg, bacon and egg, biscuit, sausage and gravy, chorizo and egg(my fav) and many more! Now this is where it gets fun...they have kolaches stuffed with heavier fillings that one can eat for lunch and have on the go. Bbq brisket, chicken enchilada, Italian chicken, jalapeño popper and more. I have tried all the ones I listed and each one has such delicious flavor with every bite that you will want more than just 1. I had to have surgery and I had to stay at my daughters and her husband's apartment and this place is right outside the gate of their apartment and he went and got eight kolaches from there. The girl that took our order was quite nice but I wish she would've asked if we've been there before to give us some recommendations on what's good. I ordered 2 Kolache, chorizo egg and cheese, the other potato egg and cheese. She grabbed my two put them in a little paper plate and she put it in the microwave? I'm new to this whole Kolache thing but the fact that it got warmed up in a microwave made not want it. I thought it would be warmed up in a oven. The inside wasn't hot and the outside was barely warm. I might go there again to give it a 2nd shot and not get the breakfast ones and try something different.
