located in a little side alley next to a parking spot just past Honolulu, Kontentsu is a nice little Japanese restaurant that serves up ramen, rice bowls, some sushi rolls, and other little Japanese dishes. you can opt for dining inside or outside in the covered patio. as for the dishes, my friend and I got the following: spicy tuna crisp crunch albacore roll spicy miso ramen spicy tonkotsu ramen hot sake Sapporo beer My spicy tonkotsu ramen was on point with the broth flavor and the noodles were cooked well. The highlight I'd say was the smoky and slightly charred chashu pork. It was fatty, melty, tender, and just so damn good! I tried my friend's spicy miso broth and it was quite tasty and full of flavor. The spicy tuna crisp was great as an appetizer and the crunch albacore roll was also great with very generous portions. The hot sake and Sapporo helped to wash it all down and to help us clear our minds of the work week. Service was friendly and good. The ambience of the spot was casual, family friendly, and very cozy. I liked the creative lighting fixture covered with ramen tebo (strainers) on the ceiling. Very creative. Amazing Ramen!!! I think this is among the best Ramen I've had in LA. The portions are generous, and there's lots of meat in the Ramen as well. The broth is simply amazing. The rest of the menu is well done too. The pork tacos are great, as are the other appetizers and side dishes we've tried. They definitely have other appealing options besides Ramen that we go back for even when none of us wants Ramen. There's a small outdoor area that has a great view and is away from the busier streets so it's quieter. The staff was very accommodating of our baby and even brought her a little sippy cup. It's always a treat when you're the only guests in the establishment. This restaurants has a lovely outdoor patio where we ate surrounded by plants and succulents. Everything was delicious! The Spicy Gyoza was amazing! So soft and tender. My girlfriend got the spicy Tonkotsu and I got the Black Tonkotsu and it was amazing. Rich broth flavors and fresh noodles. I've been here twice this week. First for a Spicy Tuna Bowl to go, then Saturday night came here for a sit down dinner. We used the Yelp waitlist and it seemed like that helped with quick seating. The Brussels sprouts and spicy gyoza were delicious and my husband REALLY liked his ramen. The only reason they are not getting 5 stars is their timing. My two dishes were delivered first, we finished those and then the ramen came, so that was pretty awkward. Next time I will ask the server to deliver everything together. I was very excited to see this place opened as a closest ramen joint in my neiborhood. But seeing the pictures on Yelp didn't tell me that the place is authentic since gyoza seems to be deep fried (handmade and pan fried is normal) and Takoyaki seems to be microwaved and come from store bought frozen bag. Yet, I still want to try the place regardless. My score: 4- Crispy spicy tuna 3- Black tonkotsu ramen - watered down broth, not much flavor was there for me 3- Curry bowl - it was ok *The reason for 3 stars: 1- There was no Shio ramen -this is a staple of ramen 2- Rice was too soft and mushy. :( 3- Fried gyoza 4- No Shichimi and Kosho (staple red and black pepper for ramen) on the table 5- Not flavorful ramen... 6- No fried rice If they are trying to go for fusion ramen, they need to do better for me to revisit again. They seem to have great reviews so far since a lot of Americans think this is "Japanese ramen" which us not in my eyes. I won't be surprised if this place is owned by non Japanese. "Content". Yum! A modern, clean and cozy establishment in an upper strip mall area of Montrose (one street back off Honolulu). Small indoor dining and a nice outdoor patio option off the back. Predominately a ramen place but they have some good sushi and Rice Bowl options as well. We've been twice in the past two weeks. We repeated the dishes we had on our first visit; he had the Spicy Pork Tonkatsu and I had the Spicy Tuna Don. These are great items to share. The broth and ramen is so insanely good. The portions are generous and enough to take home. But it is nice to have the freshness of the rice/spicy tuna/ginger with the ramen dish. They have a good selection of cold sakes as well. We love the kikusui (turquoise bottle) very light and refreshing. Shout out to the fast, friendly and efficient service as well. Need to warm up your belly this winter? Its awesome to know that we finally have a local ramen spot here in La Crescenta! We went on a Saturday night, and there was no line, so that was nice. However in the case that you want to be careful regarding lines, you can put your party on the waitlist! Parking is easy as there is a 3 hour free parking lot right next to the restaurant! The takoyaki was solid, not the best I've had but certainly also not the worst! It is a solid appetizer to grab before you eat ramen, and can be shared between two people! I ordered the tonkatsu ramen. The tonkatsu ramen was very flavorful. Loved the broth, and the texture of the noodles was great too. But my lord, the thing that blew me away the piece of chashu that I got. It was H U G E! Probably the biggest piece of chashu that I have ever gotten out of a bowl of ramen. The bowl is fairly deep too, and you'll definitely leave not feeling hungry. It is a very satisfying bowl, especially on a cold night. This new ramen spot is a little hidden but worth finding. They have a parking lot behind the plaza and the restaurant can be found on the second floor. However, despite the quietness of the rest of this plaza, this spot definitely wasn't. There wasn't a wait for us on a Saturday night. However, the wait list started to grow after we were seated. The food arrived quick and the aroma was so mesmerizing. The presentation looked alright. To my pleasant surprise underneath the large pile of green onions (which I wasn't a big fan of), there were large pieces of chashu! And oh man, that made up for the large pile on top of it. The chashu was so savory and flavorful. I savored each of those bites with the ramen noodles and the broth. It was a large portion! Definitely worth the price! What's also great is that the to-go containers were sturdy. At other ramen spots they can give containers that easily open or fall apart so it was nice to have a sturdy and reusable container to take to-go. read more

The salad was nice and refreshing! I did feel that it was a bit overdressed because the final pieces of leaf were drowned in a nicely-acidic dressing. The crisps were a tasty touch! The chashu bowl was solid! Great sweet and salty flavors that are mellowed out by the rice underneath. The Tonkotsu Black Ramen was alright. After our visit to Descanso Garden, we we were looking for a place for lunch. We ended up at Kontentsu. Excellent choice, free parking,friendly staff, and simple menu. There were 5 of us, we ordered 3 sharables, edamame, green bean tempura and takoyaki, all very good. We also ordered Tonkotu ramen, excellent broth and the chashu has just enough char to give it an extra flavor . We also got the CA poke, excellent as well. I ordered an extra one to go! Let me start off saying I'm so excited to have a decent and local ramen place! When we got there, there were 4 other parties ahead of us. But we maybe waited about ten minutes to be seated. We ordered the curry fries and oh ma gawd! They were so good! I want to go back and try their Brussel sprouts and gyoza next time! I was debating whether to get the Classic Tonkatsu or the poplar Black Tonkatsu. When I asked one server she said the Black Tonkatsu had a slightly heavier and oilier broth. So I stuck with the classic this time. The brother was very light and not overpowering. And it wasn't very oily. The pork was cooked perfectly and the noodles were very soft! I'm going to go back and try the Black Tonkatsu next time. So I will post an update! The wait staff was very friendly and our food came out very quickly. Ordered three Tonkatsu Ramen: Both was rich and warm, noodles cooked just right, but the pork was beyond salty. I feel like it was a mistake. I've had this Ramen before and the pork was good, this time it felt like the cook spilled salt. Service: Only two young women were there handling the hostess, phone orders, pick up orders, bussing, serving. I felt terrible for them, def under staffed. So as a result, the service was crazy bad. Once done with our meal, we waited for 20 mins (they didnt even pass me for me to say excuse me). I had to go to the online order pick up desk and ask for my check and for to-go boxes. It was just my kids and I for a late dinner on Wednesday, and we spent over almost two hours there, lots and lots of waiting. There was a green chunk of vegetable in my water cup and I asked for a fork for my young son ( my young son was never offered a fork). Us asking for a new cup and a fork, was difficult enough since these two women are running around. But getting the items took a long time too. read more

I got the combo with spicy tuna rice bowl and house salad (super bomb). I shared the ramen with my boyfriend while he ordered the CURRY FRIES. Like what!!! I'm not a super big fan of curry so I wasn't so excited to try it, but honestly, it was pretty good. It's definitely something different and worth the try. The location of the restaurant is "inward" next to the parking lot. PLENTY of parking by the way, but the place itself is a tad tricky to locate. I've had A LOT of Ramen in my life and this place's Tonkotsu Black Garlic Ramen was delicious. Most Ramen restaurants make the mistake of either underwhelming their Ramen, not pairing the broth with with the proper noodles or overpowering the tare too much to the point that it's a chore to finish the bowl. I finished the bowl here. It was just right. The noodles were perfectly paired and the Tonkotsu broth was still fatty and thick but not too much to the point of a bowl of lard. It made me want to go back in for a slurp and a chew. It was so good that I would be okay if the Pork Chashu was missing from the bowl. (The chashu was roasted nicely as well but it was too fall apart tender, not a huge fan of the texture I prefer a chewier chashu but it was still tasty!!) My girlfriend is Gluten intolerant and got the Pork Chashu Tacos. She enjoyed it a lot as well! She just wasn't a big fan of the amount of cut green onion on top but that's all preference. I took a bite and I love the onion amount. The presentation was nice too! Service was easy going, attentive and polite. The decor was modern and homey at the same time. They are also very attentive with COVID guidelines. They'll take your temperature at the door and they separate the eating areas perfectly. Overall, probably my new favorite Ramen spot that isn't one of the main stream spots. Oh and the prices are very very very reasonable! Solid 9/10 = 5 stars on Yelp. read more

Solid Neighborhood Ramen Spot. We've been coming here since we lived in the area and after. Whether a quick lunch to conquer the ramen craving or a nice dinner with a cold draft Sapporo, Kontentsu delivers every time. We always do the Spicy Tonkotsu and the Spicy Miso. Both are phenomenal and filling! If you can't have it there, they package takeout better than anyone I've experienced. Allows you to get home and enjoy the ramen as if you were enjoying it at the restaurant itself. We've always been fans of Modan Ramen in Eagle Rock and the menu here at Kontentsu (owned by the Modan folks) is more extensive - We loved everything we had here - loved the patio seating as well. We ordered the Tonkatsu broth ramen with roasted garlic, the curry bowl with the Karaage chicken (the red pickled radish and scallion added so much to this yummy dish), the gyoza in spicy sauce (a nice nod to the Chinese wontons in spicy sauce), and the crispy albacore roll. It's such a complete menu - it would be hard for someone not to find something they want to eat. The service was wonderful - attentive, friendly and quick. I also love that this one is in the Montrose area which is so adorable and just as close to us as Eagle Rock. read more

Best ramen in this neighborhood. If you live around here and you don't want to venture into LA for ramen this is the next best option. I tried the Shoyu Ramen and the Curry Fries. The ramen was solid. The toppings mesh well with the soup and the chunks of pork were delicious. The pork had the Shoyu flavor infused in it and each bite was super savory. The portions were larger than I expected as well, which I was pleased with. The Curry Fries were pretty good and they give a lot. The flavor was a bit on the blander side but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Service was nice, no issues there. The interior looks more on the trendy side, and you would expect the best ramen places to adopt a more "traditional" interior, but this restaurant is way better than it looks. That's not to say the place looks bad, but typically the trendier looking noodle places have usually been lackluster in my experience. The prices are slightly higher than what I'm used to, but I don't really take issue with it. I see the higher prices as something you accept in exchange for the convenience of the existence of this restaurant if you live in the area. Although the area may not be the most lucrative locations to open a ramen restaurant, perhaps, that might explain the slightly higher prices, but that's just my guess. So glad we decided to try this place especially with COVID19 closing all these restaurant. In term of COVID19 safety and cleanliness, they observed all the rules to protect customers safety. To view menu you scan the barcode and the menu pops up or they have paper menu. They've only been open for 7 months. We have to support these small businesses and keep them in operation. It's not easy to fine good dining restaurants in this area. This place is a good find, they had outdoor/patio dining. Excellent service and our food came fast. Delicious authentic Tonkatsu ramen soup , it's their signature bone broth with grilled tonkatsu and garlic truffle oil. Also tried their spicy tuna crisp, made with a sweet soy reduction and sriracha aioli. Both were delicious. Also, if you yelp them while dining there (check-in) , you get free soda beverages. Will definitely be going back to try other things on their menu. Heard they also have other locations in Eagle Rock and South Pasadena but in a different name.
