Came here with my family on a Friday night. I am a big fan of Korean Chinese restaurants, but the experience we had at this place was not good at all compared to all the great things we had heard about this place. We ordered the Sweet and sour beef, Dried fried chicken wings and the Jja jang Myun. The beef and the chicken were pretty good but the jja jang myun in the other hand was pretty bad.. But my review is mainly about the cleanliness of this restaurant. The one thing that shocked me the most is that they kept all the high chairs and boosters inside the restrooms next to the toilet. This was really shocking as it was very unhygienic... The worst part of all is that my son was actually seating in one of these dirty high chairs. Yes not sure of all the other negative reviews but.... I've gotten takeout from here three times already so it's only right to write my first 2017 review for them! First of all it's def hard to find a takeout place open so late so Thank God for this place!! What I've tried: -shrimp fried rice: idk what about their rice but it's gooood!! Like not so oily and instead of it being dry and separating the rice actually sticks together and it's just good! Just try it! -pan friend noodles with beef: it's much better with the beef than chicken but u can't do wrong with either one!! I'm a big fan of pan fried noodles and theirs is def tasty -dried chicken wings: in my opinion and ppl may think I'm cray but I think their pretty comparable to san tung! Came here on a Sunday evening with my boyfriend. SERVICE They were heavily understaffed. They only had 2 people running the main floor despite most of their tables being taken. It took a long time for our waitress to take our order. There was also a lineup of people waiting to order takeout. The waiter and waitress were polite though. It took quite a while for our food to arrive. Not sure if that's normal here or the kitchen was also understaffed. Our dishes all came out at very different intervals. Our chicken wings arrived near the end of us finishing our first noodle dish. FOOD We ordered the dry black bean noodles, dry fried chicken wings, and hot and spicy Szechuan noodle soup. Note: the only difference between the "black bean noodles" and the "dry black bean noodles" is that the dry one has onions. Dry Black Bean Noodles I'd say this was mediocre. Not great, not bad. I poured all of the sauce into the noodles. I had a lot of onions left over at the end. I enjoyrd the bounciness of the noodles. My primary complaints would be that the aftertaste of the sauce is overly salty and there isn't much meat in the dish. Ill probably try this again to see if the aftertaste is different in a less busy night. I'm not sure if my standard is just off though. I grew up in a very Chinese/korean area in LA, so I think I expect slightly more sweetness in the sauce than this place offered. Hot and Spicy Szechuan Noodle This was good. :) My boyfriend ate most of it. Not too spicy--I'd say it's between mild and medium. Lots of seafood. Bouncy noodles. We'd order this again Dry fried chicken wings This was our favorite dish. Good mix of spicy sweet on the sauce. The meat was also very juicy. Not overcooked. This restaurant is next door to the Milpa Mexican restaurant, which initially how we came to eat here. When the Milpa over loads, we would go here. Koong's is upscale Chinese and is a little more expensive than some of the bargain like places in Fremont. That being said, the food is excellent - no merely good. I don't like honey, I don't like walnuts, and I don't really like prawns--but the HONEY WALNUT PRAWNS are awesome. The Koong's beef was very sweet and garlicy, delicious. Something you just can't find anywhere. Hot and sour soup was awesome as well and their kim chi and chili are distinctly great too. Portion is generous! Peal is incredibly nice, even sits down to chat with me when she has time. I overheard her talking to an upset customer over the phone offering money back AND a replacement meal. This is a great Chinese Korean style restaurant. I came in on Presidents day around 9 PM. They still greeted my group with courtesy and attended to us quickly. This is a very underrated restaurant. I like the food. I like the service. I like the decor. Therefor, 5 stars! The food is great for the price. You get what you pay for. I disagree with a lot of the reviews that say things like, "it could use blah blah" or, "they should give more portions." IMO, the food is JUST right. You are getting exactly what you pay for, no more, no less. I really like their fried rice, though. It's plain but has flavor. There aren't a billion ingredients in it like other fried rices I've had, which can be overwhelming the majority of the time. The service is excellent. The staff is very kind, accommodating, and very eager to answer any questions I have. A lot of the reviews say that the decor is terrible. I disagree; the decor is great. This restaurant has been there for 20 years, and the decor really proves it. I really like how they haven't done anything to try to make it look "newer." I like that it gives off the feel that the decor hasn't been changed in years. It just goes to show you how long the family business has really been there for. This is not a 5-star restaurant. First time trying this place with my MIL and the service was excellent, food was good. I really like their crispy chicken wings. We ordered the puff fish soup, crispy chicken wings and spicy beef. They opened at noon so it's later than other restaurants which is a bummer if you're an early bird like me. I deducted a star since the beef dish was a bit too salty. They had really good fried rice...but the utensils on table were dirty as well as the table cover. in addition, we ordered sweet & sour chicken, lemon chicken.and honey walnut prawns..and it looks like it was all battered the same..just different sauces on top. their honey walnut prawns looked (and tasted home made)..not restaurant quality. the only time we'll ever go back is when we get fried rice TO GO..and that's it. will never eat here again. I guess after eating at "East Lake" in San Jose..your chinese food expectations soar through the roof..and comparing this place to East Lake....it's like Koong's is for "American Chinese food"...and East Lake is the "authentic Best chinese food ever the way chinese food should be cooked and taste".......I don't know why people love the honey walnut prawns here??? they are in no comparison next to "East Lake" in San Jose! read more

Their restaurant is pretty cozzy and and the lights are lit a bit low (I don't know I guess to set the mood of having a peaceful place? That or they're just saving on electricity, lol) Table setting is clean and fresh, nothing extra ordinary or anything like that. The waitress was really nice and patient since it was our first time eating there and we didn't know what to order. The free hot tea was also really good. We ended up ordering Salad, Chowmein, and Mongolian Beef (?) For some reason I kinda forgot but I think it is Mongolian Beef. They bring the orders in a big plate for 2-3 people to share. Salad was really good and tasty! Probably one of the best salads I've tasted before. Chowmein was really good too. I'm kinda hesitant whenever I order Chowmein at places I never ate at before before I'm kinda picky when it comes to chowmein and I was a bit suprise that their chowmein was really good. It was really tasty and definitely not oily or overcooked... It was cooked perfectly. The other dish that I think was Mongolian Beef was also really really really good. First tell-tale signs we shoulda walked out: 1. Waitress didn't acknowledge our party of 4, we seated ourselves. 2. Waitress didn't bring our menus because she was busy interviewing someone. 3. Waitress still didn't bring our menus because the interview went on for like 10 minutes. 4. Waitress didn't bring our menus until we asked for them. 5. We were the only asian people in the restaurant. Reasons why I WON'T be coming back: 1. Sweet and sour pork was pre-made, pork was cold and only the sauce was warm. The pork was nothing but deep fried batter and minimal pork. 2. Szechuan Shrimp (what happened to the szehuan?) was all batter and no shrimp. Bland and was not spicy. 3. Szechuan Noodle soup, had spice, but no flavor. 4. Pepper chicken, the only tolerable item we ordered but was WAYYY too oily, even compared to chinese food standards. 5. Steam rice was dry, burnt, and brown. 6. My granny complained her heart was beating really fast after the meal (MSG??) 7. My granny said "this was the worst meal ever." (SORRY GRANDMA!!) Finally tried this place after years of driving by and saying, "we have to try that place". You know how that goes. Let me say up front. For me, this is a "to-go" only restaurant. Honey Walnut Prawns: I ordered these based on the recommendations of other Yelpers and I wasn't disappointed. They were very good. Probably the *second* best I've ever had. The shrimp were tasty, unlike the shrimp a lot of other Chinese restaurants are using these days--the farm-raised variety that are tasteless and rubbery. Mongolian Beef: This was also Yelper recommended. Very good. I'm picky about my beef at Chinese restaurants--don't like the texture usually--but this beef was good. It was thinly sliced as it should be for Mongolian Beef. Fried rice was good too. I need to go again to try other things on the menu. Really want to give that third star. Not that there's anything bad. In fact, its really quite good. Need to take a step back and mention that even though in multculti Milpitas that you can get authentic (regional) Asian eats, is the fact that not everybody is into it. Long timers like myself remember the OG Chinese places like Tai Ming Low and Buckley's that served up Americanized Chinese food. So not feeling the legit stuff that you can find on every corner of this stinky mismanaged two exit town. And not wanting anything from Panda Express either. Koong's is probably the last (only) ABC joint there is. A recent take away was combo chow mein, Mongolian Beef and wor won ton soup. All of which prepared indifferently as one would expect. You can imagine the cook face palming himself in the back when getting the order. Despite the Mongolian Beef redolent with way too many onions, this ABC feast was all right. I'll take freshly prepared chow mein over the steam table anytime. So why the two instead of three? I love the decor. Gots the traditional ABC Chinese food vibe sort of caught in the amber between '79 and 80. The flat screen looks a little outta place. Maybe find a Zenith to put up in the corner instead. The only sad thing really. I got my takeout in styrofoam containers instead of the classic Chinese food boxes. Two stars. read more

Been here a number of times now since I discovered it a couple of months ago. I've eaten at the location as well as ordered food-to-go. I'm going to preface this by saying this: I'm very harsh when it comes to chinese food. I'm overly critical because there is SO much that people rave over that is just mediocre. Hubs and I are foodies and we appreciate great flavors, awesome experiences and really good service. That being said - I will start by saying I've tried every soup on their menu and they have EVERY SINGLE ONE been awesome. Even though I've made an effort to try something different every time we go, it's been not only great quality food, not once has anything come out of the kitchen lukewarm, nor have i ever gone home only to relive the meal (in one way or another) within moments of arriving at home. Those who've had questionable chinese food know of which I speak. I've had three types of their fried rice - i'm a huge fan of their potstickers. They're pan-fried - SO DAMN GOOD!! And honestly, they're not really cookie-cutter in size or shape..so I lean away from thinking they're frozen at all. That gets high marks from me. The fried chicken wings - OMG hot and crispy and garnished with this roasted garlic mixture - you wanted to just smother it all over everything, it's so good. The entrees we've had have all been awesome - so that is where our experiences are going to start moving more into the menu. The orange chicken is fabulous, as is their sweet-n-sour - if you're a fan, get this...and just wait til you taste those little heavenly tidbits of pineapple - THERE IS MAJIK in there!! You'll know what I mean when you try it!! Totally reasonable for a huge amt of food - we had the fried chicekn wings, chicken corn soup, bbq pork fried rice and sweet-n-sour pork and hot tea and the bill was $32.40 and we ended up taking home leftovers. I don't get why this place doesn't have a better overall star rating! Their food is amazing and service is impeccable. They're also family owned and I love supporting family run businesses! Their honey walnut prawns is one of the best I've had. I love that the prawn coating is still crunchy, even when ordering to go, because they use the perfect amount of sauce. It doesn't taste overly mayo-y. So yum! The sizzling rice soup is my go-to when I'm sick or or I've been to the dentist and can't handle solid foods. So good and lots of filling! I've been here many times and have ordered through grubhub... this place never disappoints with their food. It's always amazing when I try different items on their menu. The service here is awesome and you get a homey type feel from the workers here. It's like you're being served by family and they are very nice to you. This time we tried one of the combination dinners to see what it would be like. Everything we ordered was good. The bbq fried rice was good and better than most places. The hot and sour soup was delicious. The spring rolls were good and didnt taste greasy. The broccoli beef was tasty, but needed more beef. The kung pao chicken was amazing. And finally the Korean style chicken wings... this is by far the best chicken wings I've ever had. The seasoning and sauce they put on it was so good it made you want to eat more and more... only sad thing was... it came out last... so we were so bummed we didnt get to eat it first... haha... the portions are so large I always take it to go. Koongs continues to defy Congressional spending habits by offering more than thirthy (30!) delicious Chinese food dishes for under $7 each at lunchtime -- including a delicious Hot and Sour Soup and a large portion of steamed rice! Koong's Beef and the Lemon Chicken are my all-time favorites and not to be missed, and their pot stickers are some of the best around. Two of us had lunch there recently and for 2 meals, an appetizer, black tea and fortune cookies the entire bill was $15! Every alternate tuesdays I take cashew vegetable lunch dish. Not so expensive. About $5-6. I am not sure whether they use MSG or not. Have to call up and check. Though in the first place, I don't know whether MSG is good for the health. Vegetables mixed with the cashews are quite crunchy. I think we can replace the white rice with brown rice. But it was loaded with sauce. If I go in person, I would ask them to reduce the sauce and replace white rice with brown rice. With this configuration it is worth a lunch menu. read more

My parents have told me about this place after eating here several times. They told me how good it is so I decided to swing by while in the area. We ordered off the korean menu for the ja-jjang myun (black bean noodles) and cham-pong (spicy seafood noodles). It was good, but not amazing. I really like how the cham-pong had a ton of seafood in it compared to other places. My parents told me the mongolian beef dish here is the real winner. I'd like to come back and try that and see if it changes my opinion of this place. Waitresses were very nice and the food came quickly. There'e a bar in here. Random for a chinese restaurant.
