I decided to start doing Yelp reviews and although I came here last year in November, I knew that this was the first place I had to review because of the fantastic food I had this night with my girlfriend. We had grilled octopus and escargot as our starters. I didn't know octopus could taste this good. I had octopus at another place a few days before this and the ends were really chewy and rubbery, while this place had tender and flavorful octopus in every bite. They really knew how to treat their octopus. I thought that all the cooking shows I've watched were exaggerating how delicious food can be when treated the right way, but this experience really proved that to be true. It was my first time having escargot, and it went great with the bread. For our mains, I had duck confit with pears in a honey mustard sauce, with a parsnip puree on the side. My girlfriend had scallops with risotto. The duck was a little salty but was the perfect pairing with the creamy and light parsnip puree that had a hint of sweetness. Together, they made a great dish that I couldn't stop eating even though I still felt full from the ramen I had in the afternoon. My girlfriend kept raving about the parsnip puree, and she had all the right to, because it was really the best thing I've ever had. My hand kept moving to scoop up more of it even after I was full. I hope one day I can make parsnip puree that was that good. As for dessert, unfortunately we didn't have any, because we were too full to have any. When we ordered, we wanted to get dessert but we were recommended to not get it just in case we were too full, and in the end, we were really too full to get it. I'm really glad I went to this restaurant for this experience, I'll probably make a reservation for this place every time I'm in LA. read more

*****UPDATE***** So, my husband and I made reservations again before we left the restaurant for another date. September 25, 2021. Well, the day has come and I'm sorry to say it has gone...BUT the food again was incredible. It did not disappoint. At the last minute our reservation for two grew to a table for four. Precious was so willing to accommodate us, and we were grateful. We had to bring our other self-proclaimed foodie friends. We brought the French wines and Marc, and Thierry created some amazing food. It was our friends first time and they LOVED it as much as we did... So, we went a whole different route... First, the Garlic French baguette...good, but I didn't want to fill up because I knew we were going to be eating some fantastic food. Second, French Onion Soup - loved it. Much lighter, more of a broth like soup with onions and lots of cheese and bread. Very nice, heavy from all the bread that I ate in the soup, but the "broth" was so flavorful. Our one friend who is not a French Onion Soup person, enjoyed it. Third, Grilled Octopus - this was very good. Nice and crisp. I really enjoyed it... Fourth, Foie Gras, loved it. Very rich and the jam that it was served was very nice. Ordering this again... Fifth, OMG!!! The King Prawn Ravioli with prosciutto...I should have ordered two or three of these and made this my entrée...it was SO good. My entrée was delicious, but this starter, left me craving more after we left, the next day and the following day after that! Entrees: Husband had the Burgundy Beef; he enjoyed the flavor and the slow cooking that it took to get that meaty taste. Friend #1 ordered the beef tartar as his entrée, and he was very impressed and loved it! He scraped every bit of it off his plate. That plate was clean after he finished it. Friend #2 ordered the lamb shank that came with a side of baked cheesy cauliflower. I'm not a lamb person, but I had a taste, and it was good. I think I need to be in the mood to have it; however, that baked cauliflower side was so good and cheesy! I had the Black Cod Filet that was pan fried and that was delicious as well. So, the piece de resistance was the dessert! OMG! OMG! OMG! The Floating Island: a very beautiful meringue in the middle of a wonderful cream sauce (tastes like evaporated milk to me, but I'm sure it's much more than that) covered with roasted almonds and pistachios (heaven...sigh) and the Apple Tarte, luscious layers of pastry dough (soft in the middle and crunchy on the edges) and apples with vanilla ice cream. We love this place and before we even finished, we made reservations again for next month. Came to this restaurant with a friend to celebrate the holidays & because we had seen on yelp that they had scallop risotto, which looked amazing. However, it seems that they change their menu every so often so sadly that dish wasn't available. We still wanted scallops so we opted for the black truffle scallops. The dish was okay. The scallops were good but wish they had been seared a little more. The truffle was good and not overwhelming. However, I didn't really enjoy the pears & mousseline because they were super sweet. I wish there was a more savory element to help balance it. I will say the escargots & bread were fantastic! My only wish here would be that the escargots had some more of the sauce on them to dip my bread in. I enjoyed the whole meal overall experience but personally wouldn't come here again. But still nice that I actually got to try it! read more

Wonderful experience! It's nice to find another hidden gem in town. Felt like a locals place in the best sort of way and being that I am one as well I felt extra comfortable. It's especially a great date spot but I would go on any occasion honestly. Our waitress was very polite and checked in on us many times. I started with the French Onion Soup which was very good although different than what I'm used to being they used white onions but the surprise actually made the dish more unique. I then followed up with the Beef Burgundy which was rustic and hearty and filled with delicious veggies, pearl onions, and an awesome rich stew. I love inland French cuisine and this dish did not disappoint. Parking can be a bit tricky but there are many pay lots close as well that won't charge more than $10. They don't have many tables inside so I would suggest booking ahead. Very enjoyable experience and I would recommend to any French food fan or anyone looking for a good dinner. read more

Super cute cozy French restaurant with friendly staff and lovely decorations. I especially love that you can see the chef prepare your meal in the kitchen through a TV screen. Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time! What we ordered: We started off with the Escargot (so warm, buttery, and tender) and Garlic-Min Baguette (perfect combination of crispy and soft, & brushed with garlic). As for our mains, we got the Duck Confit, Bœuf Bourguignon (Burgundy Beef), Salmon, and King Prawn Ravioli with Prosciutto. Dishes were well made, flavorful, and tender, but would say I appreciated the chill atmosphere (slow French restaurant vibes) of the place more. We wrapped up the night with a chocolate and lemon dessert (sorry I forgot the names ), as well as a crème The deep chocolate compliments the zesty lemon so well and is a great palette cleaner at the end of the meal. They have moved to a new location. I loved the new location it's more spacious, the only thing I missed is the live tv they had in their previous location where you could see the chef preparing the food. The food was good as usual. Loved the garlic bread. As I am not drinking alcohol the bar tender was able to customize a drink for me, i really appreciate that. They have a nice list of cocktail and some amazing wines. A near perfect French bistro. We last went on a Saturday evening. We were greeted promptly in a welcoming manner. Service was spot on, friendly, knowledgeable and not intrusive. The onion and shallot soup was impressive. The broth was a perfect blast of umami to go with the cheese and bread. My son, who is a picky eater, loved every drop of the cheese plate. The cheeses were well selected and the accompaniments were fresh. The duck confit never disappoints, it's so good that it keeps me from trying their other entrees. Profiteroles for dessert were very refreshing on a summer evening, not too sweet and a good size for sharing. Bar offerings were equally excellent, the mint julep was outstanding and the server's wine selection for the duck was perfect. The setting is relaxed and the service unhurried. Our recent experience at L'Appart was disappointing. The sea bream crudo we ordered contained fish bone and scale, which was unexpected and unappetizing. When we brought this to the staff's attention, they simply explained that because it's a white fish, bones and scales are to be expected. Therefore, they didn't offer to change our dish or do anything. We've had crudo at numerous other restaurants in LA, never had those as part of the ingredients on the plate. Octopus, duck confit, and beef bourguignon were decent, but the crudo really overshadowed our meal. read more

Nestle next to the old Cento, this is probably where the arts of LA intersects with a rather rough area. I wouldn't walk around here and I grew up on 3rd street, that should mean something. The staff here is friendly, service is good, food was as expected. Interior is small, kitchen can be slow, but entertaining. It's a lot of people in a small space. The decor here is reminiscent of grandma's house with flower linen, wallpapers and a church piano. It felt similar to dine in a living room then a restaurant. There's not much to complain about here, not not much to write about. Things are as expected, food is as expected, parking sucks and not much to do afterwards. Decent selection of wine to fill your void, to fill your long week, but am missing something that would want me to keep coming back. As rich as the food was, it was rather bland? Savory, sweet, buttery, but bland. Huge props to the chef, the service crew is awesome and the place is cozy. But, I'd contest that on this price level, you'd probably want to stand out with a dish or two. Just my humble opinion. It's not a place to bring your first date, but would be my go to place for Mother's Day?! Not sure, either way, it's worth a try. Perhaps just one try. read more

L'appart is a French eatery that brings the excellence and delicacy of French cuisine to Los Angeles, where most restaurants are all talk, no show. L'appart is in the heart of DTLA in a row of wineries and other dimly lit restaurants. It is such a spectacular spot that deserves a line out the door. The prices are low, the presentation is flawless, the portions are sizeable, and the food is top notch. Plus, you get to see the chef assemble your food in live time since he has a camera over his work station. The menu is small and it changes every week. We started with some escargot and it was less earthy than the other ones I've had. It was more subtle in flavor, with the tenderness of a sautéed mushroom. My friend who has had escargot in Paris really liked this. We also ordered the French onion soup which was a clear, vegetarian broth. I think this soup was alright, but lacked the rich meaty flavor of the standard broth. The cheesy bread on top was quite good though. I ordered the lamb shank which was so tender it fell off the bone. The outside of the lamb was crisp, adding a wonderful textural contrast to the soft flesh. The lamb was plated in a pool of what tasted like a curry rosemary gravy, with a dollop of whole grain mustard. There was a whole baked onion on the side with a bready, chickpea stuffing. The lamb was flavorful and herby. My friends all ordered L'appart's hit duck confit and licked their plates clean. These are three people with different tastebuds, one who doesn't like cooked fruit in her savory dishes. The duck was plated masterfully in a bed of honey mustard sauce with crispy gnocchi and cooked pear. You could tell the duck was cooked perfectly since it flaked off easily. Everyone was impressed. We ended our night with a complimentary lava cake for my birthday and it was quite the dessert. The top had a crunch caramelized layer and the inside was a molten chocolate that wasn't too sweet. They served it with a sweet cream that tasted like melted vanilla ice cream. I would return to this place in a heartbeat. It was such a perfect meal. read more

I came here to say we had the most wonderful experience this morning having brunch and we are looking forward for a dinner as the food did not disappoint. Chef Marcus was checking on his guest through out the entire brunch and the moment the buffet tray were running low and food he was himself in charge of filling them up. The crepes did not disappoint and our 7 year old enjoyed his nutella crepe very much and wants to come back for more! I definitely recommend this place. I love French food! This place was so good! And the prices are very reasonable, considering inflation + covid, and the portion sizes are pretty big! -French Onion Soup: Tasty! -Parisian Gnocchi: They did not have enough gnocchi to make a dish but could substitute more escargot into the dish. How could I say no? Honestly, the gnocchi was okay and I LOVED the escargot. I'd probably just stick with ordering escargot next time. -Sea Bass: This was my favorite dish of the night. For those that order sea bass often, you know there are a lot of varieties. I think this was Chilean sea bass because the flesh was firm and oil rich. I'm not sure the mustard seeds and sweet potato mash went with the fish but the fish was perfectly cooked and had a nice sear. -Duck Confit: They really like their whole mustard seeds here. I'm not sure this added anything to the dish. Maybe if it was pickled? It just felt like slimy balls with not much flavor. The duck was okay but honestly, the sea bass outshined by miles and miles. The duck was pretty tasty when paired with the potato dish though. Maybe it needed more of the creamy sauce with it. The duck actually didn't feel as decadent as other duck confits I've had. -Creme Brulee: Their flavor of the night was lime. Interesting. We ordered a creme brulee but I guess we didn't specify that we wanted the lime one? I didn't realize they had an original one too. This was the best meal I've ever had. I've been around the world which includes France and this is still the best food I've ever had. This location is small and inviting. It gives off a small bistro vibe but more homey. It only holds 7 or 8 tables inside. Candle light and fresh roses on every table makes it feel instantly romantic. The staff and chefs were amazing. The food was insane. Every single thing was top notch. As you sit and wait for your food there is a tv in the corner where you literally watch them prepare your food and watch them seamlessly deliver it to your table. Watching them hand prepare your food with such detail and attention is both impressive and exciting. The food is out of this world. I experienced flavors I've never had before and still don't know how to describe. For starters we got escargot, stuffed bread and the onion soup. All amazing. For our mains we got risotto with scallops and the Seabass. The seabass was the softest most buttery fish I've ever had. Lastly for dessert we got the peanut butter cream Brulé and French toast ice cream sandwich. Everything was perfect. The chefs were super nice and welcoming. The staff was great. I really enjoyed this place. I was promptly greeted, and the decor was super cute. I got to choose my seat. I chose I corner seat, so I could see everything. One thing I noticed and had never seen, was that there was a screen of what the chef was doing. That was super cool!!!! My server (I think part owner too) was very kind and incredibly intuitive/observant. I'm already a happy camper! Service is everything to me! I had the onion soup, and the burnaan, which is Beef cooked for 6 hrs in a red wine sauce, served on a cheese Naan. I also had a glass of red wine. The soup came out first. It was served in the cutest tureen, and wicked hot, which is how I prefer my soups. It was very tasty, and I shamelessly scraped the cheese from the sides. My server even commented. Ha! The burnaan took a bit longer, but was well worth it. These aren't my normal flavors, but they are tasty, and work well together. I'm somewhat full from the soup and start to slow down towards the end of the first half. My server brings me a to go container and we laugh. That's what I'm talkin about!!! The ambiance was great, service was amazing, food was fantastic, made for a great evening. I'd definitely go back and try some other selections on the menu, and probably have more soup! There isn't a whole lot of space but that lends toward the intimacy of the dining experience. We dined here on the 14th. The reviews were very good so we decided to try it out. We ordered the crudo which was very flavorless, just eating raw salmon with a hint of olive oil. The beef bourguignon was pretty good but the risotto was not cooked well enough. For dessert we had the crème brûlée and it was probably the worst one we've ever eaten. It was basically eating scrambled eggs for breakfast. Well done scrambled eggs that is. For a french restaurant that feels extra bad. Service was fine. Since covid, prices have been high, service bad and experiences tainted at even my favorite spots. Hard to hire help these days. Pasta was al dente, meats were prepared nice and soft with no complaints for the whole experience. It's in downtown so parking is on the street or a nearby structure. This was my first ever French dining experience, and L'Appart is now my uncontested favorite restaurant ever. I am worried that all the others to follow will be incomparable. This quaint, unassuming place houses incredibly talented chefs and congenial staff guaranteed to make your day/night/week! My partner and I were in LA for vacation a few months back, and this was one of the last stops on our trip before we flew back to NYC. We had reservations for 6PM, but due to an unfortunate incident with LA traffic, were hopelessly delayed and would not have made it. When we called, the host graciously changed our reservation to a later time and assured us it would be fine whenever we could get there. The place was nestled between closed stores on a quiet street but the restaurant itself was bustling with customers by the time we arrived. The maitre d' was so pleasant and gave us ample time to peruse the menu (which changes weekly from what I was told) while we settled in. The lighting was dim for an intimate atmosphere and the retro decor made it feel like we had stepped into a little piece of France. A mounted TV allows patrons to have a live bird's-eye view of the chefs preparing the food which was an entertaining touch. We ordered a glass of rosé and a pot of lavender chamomile tea to share while waiting for our dishes. Now, without further ado, for the food that I still dream of to this day: We started with escargot, which was a mouthful of garlicky, buttery heaven. It was so tender and paired perfectly with the warm and crisp baguette slices. We also ordered a grilled octopus, which was plated beautifully with rolled cucumber slices, fried parsnip tendrils and mustard seed dressing over a bed of labneh sauce. It was the ""perfect bite"" from beginning to end and set our expectations high for our mains. Speaking of which, they arrived together in a timely fashion and it was truly a feast for the senses. I ordered the seared scallops over spinach risotto while my partner got the duck confit with parsnip puree, both of which were plated delicately with various garnishes. You know when your eyes involuntarily close as you eat a bite that's so unbelievably delicious? Well, I thought that was a gimmick for TV shows, but boy was I mistaken. It's such a corny analogy, but it was exactly like the moment in Ratatouille when Remy tastes strawberry and cheese together and fireworks floated around in his head. I am not normally this dramatic, but I swear I felt tingles in the rear of my head because the flavors in the food were so expertly balanced that it felt like they were dancing on my tongue, lingering after each bite. The most underrated side was the parsnip puree, however. The taste and texture left me speechless- it was smoother than silk, with the airy consistency of whipped mashed potatoes in a medley of delicate sweet and savory flavors with just a hint of spice. It was unbelievable. Both of us were dismally full at this point, but still couldn't help taking little nibbles of the puree, each time thinking ""ok this is the last bite"". By the end of the meal, there were only two things I wished for; first, that we had come here on the first day of the trip instead so we could've come every single night, and second, that we didn't get lunch that day so there was room for dessert (sadly, even the second dessert stomach was closed for business at this point). When the check came, the maitre d' apologized profusely for not being able to check in with us as much due to the unexpectedly busy night. To be honest, we were also too busy in our food heaven bubble to notice. L'Appart is an absolute gem of a restaurant that checks every mark on the list for me. I can only hope that it may one day open an outpost in NYC maintaining the same quality, but for now, I'll have to suppress the urge of impulsively flying back to LA solely for a meal here again. read more

If you are looking for an exceptionally yummy French bistro downtown with reasonable prices, this is your place! The interior is cozy with a vibe that is perfect for dinner with friends or a date. The Charcuterie and Cheese plate, Beef Tartar, Filet Mignon and French Fries were all wonderful with presentation that matched. They also have a good wine list. The service/staff were great as well, it seemed like 3 or 4 people running the place including Chef. Such a fun gem in the heart of DTLA. As you enter it's so cozy with fresh flowers and fluffy pillows to make you feel comfortable and ready to relax from a long day. Brigette was amazing, she worked with our struggle on figuring out our drinks and helped us along :] she explained everything in detail and really made the experience more special for us. The food was amazing, affordable and super delicious. The pictures don't do justice. The plating and also the edible detailed leaves they make were tasty, you can really feel the effort to make their guest connect with the food and experience giving us a little taste of France in LA. Food is AMAZING. I ordered the salmon tartare and the zucchini cannelloni, it was so fresh, tasty, not too salted, balanced, well presented, and quantity was just perfect. Brigitte our waitress was fantastic. Safety measures are definitely respected and the outdoor was very smartly set up with a bamboo screen that separate you from the actual side walk, heaters so we can feel comfortable, nice chairs and tables. A perfect bistro with high quality food and service. What else can you expect? I will definitely come back. It was a bubble of air during this pandemic ! Food is authentic, creative and tasty. Great foie gras, the fish was super tender, the puréed veggies very fluffy. Duck confit was melting off the bone, delicious though a bit salty to my taste. As a bit of a novelty, from the dining room one can watch a live feed from the kitchen that gives you an overhead view of plates being prepared. Service was friendly and attentive. Why not five stars: the bathroom wasn't exactly spotless even though we were the first customers of the evening (not gross, but wet in places you'd rather not be wet), limited drink menu (no beer, just wine; no decaf hot drink options), and venting is such that kitchen smells permeate the dining area. Top french restaurant in LA. The only place where you can order beef bourgignon tacos! The steak tartare was on point, as well as the bread and ratatouille. I also loved the artistry going into the refreshing cucumber yogurt entree. The beef bourgignon was good, but the gnocchi were to crispy and dry on the outside as well as inside. I believe gnocchi should be very soft and plump. Didn't get that here. Also the burgundy sauce was a bit too thick and salty in my opinion. It lack slightly a rich wine flavor. I feel like my beef burgundy I make at home is better. Still a very good restaurant, but not sure I would come back unless they change their menu and there is more to try. This place may be better for lunch. read more

This is truly one of the finest restaurants in LA. It is a bit out of the way in a sketchy part of DTLA (just by Coles French Dip) but will reward the intrepid diner with an outstanding experience from the friendly service to the phenomenal food. Truly like being in France for a great and authentic meal. I went with a group of three French foodies -- and we all loved our food from the appetizers to the the main courses. I had the beef Bourguignon and it was a far cry from the sloppy mess that it sometimes can be, to the contrary, it was carefully crafted and served with great style. Ask them about the nearby secured parking lot when you make your reservation. We found a spot on the street and everything worked out fine but next time I will definitely pop for the security. read more

I decided to try out a new brunch spot with good reviews on Google. I booked a reservation for the brunch, but I believe that you can walk in without a reservation. The ambiance was great with live music, but unfortunately, "all that glitters is not gold." For brunch, they offered a variety of buffet items which included croissants, and crepes, among other things. I got my food, but to my disappointment, there was a strand of eyelashes inside the juice. The service was not satisfactory either, as only two waiters were serving the entire restaurant, which was not fair to the clients or the staff! I had to get utensils from other tables because my table didn't have any. Despite the idea of having a buffet for brunch being a good one because you can choose what you want to eat, the staff and owner should be aware of these little things. Perhaps, dinner would be a better experience instead of brunch. read more
