The service was amazing and authentic!! The place was busy on a Saturday afternoon but we still were sat immediately. The food was amazing! But the snapper was super trash. Legit the ONLY thing I didn't like. It was 100% tasteless which made 0 sense considering it was coated with something. But listen. Everything else was amazing! The chips and salsa brought to the table were so tasty and fresh! The tortilla with butter they bring to the table was super tasty and warm and I mean cmon a bit fattening but totally worth it haha The plates we ordered came with their fish soup. Oh. My. Gosh. Possibly the best soup I've ever had in my life like seriously. Wow. The assistant manager was extremely disappointing. I let her know all my lovely compliments from the service to 95% of the food but when I told her how much I hated the snapper she just asked if I wanted a dessert. No ma'am. I'm sorry I'm not eating sweets right now and I don't think as a customer I should ever need to flat out tell you I don't think I should pay for something or request a discount. I personally just think the customer should never need to ask. And I always leave the manager at hand the discretion of their own offers. I wanted to find a new place to have a couple of Margaritas and appetizers, I think I may have set my expectations a little too high. It's Friday evening, supposed to be dinner hour and the place only has a few tables, we opt to sit at the bar to watch sports on the flat screens above the bar. The Margarita arrives in dainty little fancy barware which left me asking if it's enough to whet my whistle. It wasn't. The shrimp tostada appetizer is a plate of 4 that are tasty, but the tostada rounds seem to be a little stale, perhaps required to handle the soppy shrimp mixture including lemon and avacado squares. I don't know if I will be returning although this is the only place in the area that has a Mariachi. read more

I'm so glad I've rediscovered this gem. On my most recent visit I was with my sister-in-law. She got the beef quesadilla and I got the ceviche. The ceviche is CRAZY GOOOD!!!!!! They also have a seared Ahi Tuna appetizer that really tempted me. I must try it next time. My s-i-l's quesadillas were unusual in that they were more like tacos, but tasty all the same. I really like the atmosphere at La Calle Doce. It is more upscale than your typical Mexican restaurant. The menu features seafood throughout, but there are a number of pork, beef and chicken options for people who don't do ocean fare. I'll be back soon! read more

We love this place, and this Lakewood location is more convenient for us. (Just as good as the original Oak Cliff location.) Start with the Nachos de Cameron, and if you still want more shrimp - get the Cameron de la Plancha! Or the fajitas, or enchilads, or whatever - it's all good! Even if you never ask the roaming singers to play your song; you can enjoy the music. Good stuff! Plenty of parking, and fair prices. read more

Three words. Seafood. Mexican. Amazing. This place gives "Mom and Pop" vibes and I loved it. We went on Mother's Day, so a wait was to be expected. About 30 minutes later, we were seated outside (at our request). The menu we were given was slightly different from what was online, but I was able to order something from the menu I found online, which I really appreciated! We were given chips and 2 salsas, 1 green 1 red. We were all surprised that the green salsa was served warm, but we liked it more than the traditional red salsa. Both were great, and I had to stop myself from filling myself up on them (which I had the opportunity to do, because it took a while to get our food) Caldo de Pescado (Fish stew) was served with each dish (for the seafood dishes) and it was very delicious. If it was a cold day. I would have appreciated it more, but I loved the warmth it brought. Not as much seafood as I would have wanted, and the chunks were a little large, but I still loved it. For the meals, the portions were very large, especially for the price and considering it's seafood. Chile Relleno de Mariscos: I was underwhelmed. I saw seafood and Chile relleno (one of my favorite dishes) and I figured it would be a match made in heaven. While it was delicious, it was not as flavorful as I had hoped. The inside filling was a little mushy, and there wasn't as much as texture as I had hoped to find. The side of rice was delicious, but I was confused by why were given more of the side than the main dish. ($17.95) Camaron a la Diabla: This was different than your typical shrimp dish. You can choose between an extra spicy Mexican sauce or sweet & sour American sauce, and be the spice lovers we are, we chose to go with the Mexican sauce. It packed a punch, which was appreciated. The vegetables were a nice relief from the spice, but didn't have as much flavor as I would have preferred. ($17.95) Al Mojo de Ajo: If you're here on a date night, do NOT order this. The garlic flavor is prevalent, which I loved, but your date may not. I preferred the other shrimp more, but this was definitely yummy. It didn't feel as Mexican inspired as the other dishes. Were there a 6th star, my most recent trip here would have earned it. My date likes to travel and this place is almost like taking a short vacation to a Mexican seaside resort. It was a stormy Saturday night and although the place was nearly full, there was a table waiting for me and my date without a reservation. It was along a mirrored wall which opened up the 2 story dining room. In the background, a wandering minstrel with guitar was playing Guantanamera. There were large groups of 3 or 4 generations with all laughing and smiling (the large colorful drinks might have helped that). As my date helped me with my mispronunciations of the menu (trust me, my German, Turkish and French is not any better than my Spanish), the musician switched over to a lively version of Happy Birthday (which was played to at least 3 others while we were there). Chips, salsa and fresh tortillas were placed before us. I struggled to decided which was best and decided it was a tie. We were right next to the tortilla maker. We started with Fondu Cancun which was unlike anything I've ever had. It was delicious and delightful. The cheese was tangy with a touch of sharpness. The scallops and crab were the best within it. More than enough for us, but I didn't want to waste it. I ordered the Al Mojo de Ajo Snapper and my date ordered the Chile Relleno de Mariscos. Both of these came out precisely as we finished our Sopa de Pescado which was very delicious. I should add that I'm not fond of Cilantro, but was able to skim enough off the top of the soup to make it very enjoyable. My date was almost speechless as she enjoyed the Chile Rellano. I tried a bite and agreed, it was phenomenal! My snapper was perfectly grilled and very full of the sharp flavor that makes the snapper special. The potato was well baked and prepared. The rice was some of the best I've ever tasted. The cabbage and pepper slaw was absolutely tasty and accented the flavor of all else. The service was attentive and never were our glass less than 3/4 full. The music in the background made for a perfect evening. Having a TV with the Rangers on kept most content as the Rangers hung on and won. The cost of this meal was much lower than one would expect for this short trip to Mexico. I've been here twice so far, I had the shrimp enchiladas last time and they were pretty solid. I like how they give you their fish soup complimentary as well as chips and salsa. When I came for my recent visit, it took a while to be seated, even though waitstaff acknowledged our presence and then ignored us for 5 min, only for us to be asked by someone else if we were being helped; I found that a bit rude. The vibe inside is pleasant with their live music- at times loud, but still enjoyable. The menu has so many seafood offerings. This time around I tried the shrimp tacos and my friend had the amigos tacos combo of mahi mahi, shrimp, and some other fish. My shrimp tacos were fine but my friend wasn't too pleased with her mahi mahi tacos- I tried some and agreed with her, it was definitely over marinated and a bit bitter. We both got margaritas and found them to be a tad bit too sweet. This place is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in Dallas, I brought my dad here for lunch on Monday afternoon, I actually forgot to make a reservation beforehand and had no problem being seated. The staff was accommodating and brought out fresh warm tortillas with chips and green and red salsa right as we sat down. There's not a single thing off this menu I didn't like. Everything was so well put together and fresh. We started off with Ceviche ($13.95) It included pieces of cod along with the shrimp, the flavors blended really well, and had the perfect amount of tang in it. Highly recommend this as an appetizer. We also ordered A La Veracruzana ( $18.94 + 4 shrimps for $2 each) served with Cod Stew, everything in my plate was seasoned and cooked so well. I had absolutely no leftovers in my plate. For drinks, we asked for a virgin strawberry margarita and the glass was bigger than I expected, full to the rim, and really tasty. Between the two of us we were not able to finish it. My dad had some leftovers that he packed to go but forgot them in the restaurant - our waitress came outside to deliver the food to our car in the cold weather as we were driving by. Even the hubs wrinkled his nose when I said I was going here with a group. Yeah, the seafood and fish dishes on that prior visit were meh. If that's your thing, I'd recommend going a few blocks west to Palapas. The traditional tex-mex was good! Reasonably priced, quick service, and tasty. My dish is cheese enchiladas -- these ranked among the best in Big D. Definitely better than the ones across the street (sorry, Matt). Good happy hour margaritas. Handling of our group was great. There's tons of space for groups. More important, our server handled our group really well. I know groups are a pain for servers, and you'd never know it here. Ode to Frozen Margarita: Tempting me with your wide brim. Icy glass and splayed lime. When squeezed on top an icy limon layer to break through with my straw. Wait out the margarita for a few moments, because it's too frozen at first. As it thaws it turns into melty clumpy bliss. More tart than bitter-liquor. Anyway, two of the full size and everything gets better...music, conversation, food. Soooo...in this tequilanated haze my faves from the menu: the cod stew quickie-starter with the seafood entrees is made by the quality of the fish stock which is nice. The shrimp tacos are a greasy treat: fresh corn tortillas wrapped around nuggets of shrimp and some colorful bell peppers and possibly a few onion slivers, fastened together with toothpicks and deep fried until the shell is crispy. If you can drain enough of the grease from them they are worth it. At least the cucumber and jicama side, splashed in lemon juice, is light enough to balance it. Coctel de Camaron is the typical mexican shrimp cocktail, but thrills with the briny goodness of the shrimp and endless avocado shards jumbled in the saucy mix. If there's a common thread developing it's the shrimp. The Fajitas de Camaron sizzle away on their iron skillet. Here, the shrimp don't really shine too much, but the green and red bell peppers and onions (and a whole jalapeno) that blacken away into carmelized goodness make a tasty filler for your tortillas, especially when doused with the good house hot sauce. The Caldo de Camaron is simple: six large count shrimp and broth. A few diced jalapenos in 1/2 carat-bit sizes. Maybe some tiny cucumber pieces...not sure. What you HAVE to do is tear apart the accompanying rolls and drop the pieces little by little into the broth while you eat to give it filler. Makes a quite nice bread soup effect. Rest of the menu...let's see: a decent meat dish is the tacos de carne deshebrada: like pulled brisket wrapped in tortillas: 3 to an order. Chicken tacos are pretty nice. Red Snapper dish I tried was major let-down, especially compared to what I remember from Javiers years ago. Tex Mex is ok...nothing special. Have had some other average and disappointing seafood items. So you made it this far in the review? You earn a treat! The secret of La Calle Doce: Best bean and cheese nachos ever. Cut up one of the red onions....pile on a few jalapeno slices...take a big sip of the frozen margarita...it's perfectly melty frozeny by this point. I've been on a fish taco frenzy for the last few weeks and I'm on a mission to try any place that offers them. La Calle Doce's shtick is seafood and Mexican mashed together, so I figured they would have fish tacos down to a T. I was right, sort-of. I purposely went around 2pm to miss the lunch crowd because I needed to get some work done. They sat me near an outlet by request. Then I decided no Friday lunch was complete without a margarita, so I ordered a regular house mix. Nothing special...it *tasted* like mix, but hell...you put tequila in anything and I'll drink it. I ordered the Mahi Mahi Tacos, which came with a seafood soup to start. I wasn't very hungry for soup so I only at the seafood out of it (which wasn't much), and it was a little greasy for my taste. The tacos came out lickity-split (I swear, it couldn't have taken them longer than 5 minutes to make them). They were hot, fresh and looked darn good. The fish was more on the blackened side (which was cool with me) and just okay - but what *made* the tacos was the creamy and tangy mayo-ey sauce inside. I imagine it was loaded with calories or I would have asked for a side of it. I ended up putting the jicama salad into the tacos and that gave them a nice zing as well! The service was very attentive. He was there when I needed him, but he knew I was doing work so he left me alone. I was really really pleased with the way he handled my table, fo sho. I stayed for a bit longer until the chair was no longer comfy, then packed up and left. The space is really well lit and open, however, and made for a great atmosphere. Long sharp chicken bone wrapped inside sour cream chicken enchilada spoiled a family dining experience. Just the thought of how dangerous it could have been had I gotten the bone in my next bite is horrifying! No one wanted to finish their meal - spoiled our appetite. The management reacted poorly by justifying the bone being there because the chicken is hand pulled. I get it, accidents can happen, but the way they uncaringly mishandled the situation by making excuses, not offering to take this meal off our ticket, and avoiding any compensation was surprising. We would never make a scene or demand any kind of bill adjustments, in fact we paid our bill & left the waiter his tip because it wasn't really his fault, but we will NEVER go back after many years calling this our favorite Mexican restaurant and referring many friends looking for tasty food. We scheduled our Christmas party with La Calle Doce because to be honest they were the only restaurant who would give us a reservation for 24! I had eaten there before and decided to give them a try! They agreed to open up the whole menu to us for a Luncheon (it did last all afternoon)! We were so pleased with the private room, the food, drinks, the presentation of the food and the SERVICE! We had one waiter and he did it ALL without skipping a beat! I'm not a big fan of seafood. It's OK, but there are other foods I prefer. But I found myself at La Calle Doce with three seafood lovers and they were very pleased with their choices. The other couple split the blackened catfish and finished every bite. My wife had the salmon and saved some to take home. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were very good. We dined there on a Saturday night. The place was full. But not packed. There was a guy with a guitar and a nice voice who went around singing to various tables. Nice touch. Added to the festive mood. Our server, Anna, was very good. Attentive but not hovering. She even brought a gentle sense of humor which is always appreciated. The prices are very fair for the quality of the food. The ambience is open and friendly. I was afraid that parking might be a problem, but not so. Adequate parking, even for a Saturday night. This is one of my favorite places. However, I was disappointed on my last visit. I ordered the paella which is a traditional Spanish seafood & rice made food. I didn't appreciate the fact that la Calle Doce uses it's same boiled seafood that serves on their's soup to make the paella with. It was not very pleasant or good. Granted, the Tex-Mex tyranny here in Dallas is a sore point with me. But this place is around the corner from me, practically, and I like the idea of it. (Also, it's not ONLY Tex-Mex; it offers some more Mex-Mex dishes, I think.) I used to like to rely on them when I was feeling under the weather--as I am today. (Testing myself for Covid as I write.) I ordered three large containers of soup--Sopa Anauachalli (Chicken Toritilla) and Xochitl (a thinner broth, with avocado). I ate the Anauachalli. TOO SALTY!!!! I love salt--too much for my own good; but this soup was over the top. Salt was pretty much all you could taste. I probably had enough salt in most of one large bowl to last me a year--and maybe the rest of Dallas, too. I am truly disappointed. I post this because I truly hope that the lovely people at La Calle Doce will reduce the salt in their soup significantly. read more

The two stars are based mainly on the dessert Let me start with the positives: Tres Leches Cake: PHENOMENAL!!! I'm not a fan of tres leches cake but someone else in our group got it and it looked so yummy i had to get some. The cake is done as a layered cake instead of the traditional sheet cake but the presentation they went with makes it look very appealing. The cake was nice and moist - not overly mushy or dry in spots and their icing was absolutely amazing - i could probably eat a whole bowl of the stuff. I'd probably come here JUST to get the cake it was so wonderfully good. Negatives: Food was bland and below average. I got the pechuga al carbon - basically grilled seasoned chicken. Although im grateful that they were generous with their portions (2 chicken breasts, steamed vegetables, and rice) I am baffled that they would butterfly the chicken breasts. Although hot, they arrived on my plate completely dried out. The flavor left nothing to be desired - they used a chili powder blend on the chicken and vegetables - i had to use the table salsa to give the food some flavor and some moisture. The rice reminded me of the rice i used to get at El Pollo Loco in Cali - no bueno. On the flip side - service was pretty decent. read more

When I politely shared with the manager my experience they said sorry and that was a language barrier- okay....???? Well that doesn't explain no one approaching me for 20 minutes and if myself ams the waitress cannot communicate then how do you expect her to serve me or me to order??? The grand reopening party was last night and it was packed! The Hispanic Chamber was a noticeable presence, as well as several local civil servicemen. There were FREE tray-passed margaritas and tapas, which were good, but I was there to eat! After waiting 20 minutes at our table to be acknowledged, our server finally came to take an order- understandable due to the volume, both booming from the mariachis on the balcony and in record bodies filling the space between the two crowded bar areas. The food was just okay. Queso: very bland... it was simply melted cheese product Beans: very bland Rice: not bad, finally found some pepper! Chips: tasted stale Fondue Cancun: almost too creamy, but very good Fajitas Asada: the meat was seasoned very well and cook beautifully Ceviche: just the right amount of spice Would we go back? Yes. This is a good place for brunch. I was seated promptly on a weekend. They served a warm tortilla with a couple of hot sauces and fresh (at least warm) tortilla chips. Their menu focuses on Seafood dishes, so I decided to try a shrimp cocktail. It stacked up well by comparison to La Jaivita's which is my go to place for this dish. Not to 'ketchupy' with the pico just right. I also ordered an omelette stuffed with Pico de Gallo and smothered with cheese. The omelet was well prepared and was different from a normal cheese omelet. My only wish is that the queso used to top off the omelet was a bit spicier. read more

Hello. I ate at La Calle Doce on Friday. Ordered the chicken enchiladas and while eating them found a long, sharp chicken bone in one - about 1.5 inches long. I didn't think anything of it. I tried the next enchallida and found the same thing - a long, sharp chicken bone. If I had swallowed it, it might have been a serious situation. I called over the waitress, showed her 2 chichen bones, and she smiled and asked if I wanted another enchallida. No apology or concern. I asked for the manager who came over and I showed her the chicken bones. She then started this rapid list of reasons why this happens. I told her to stop making excuses. She never apologized. She showed no concern. I will never eat there again. Beware of the food you are served, especially if it has chicken. There are much better mexican restruants. read more
