Have been a customer of La Calle Doce since they first opened in Oak Cliff. This location has been suffering, but yesterday was the last straw. Service was mediocre, food mediocre, and when we sent back the old & tasteless guacamole, the waiter punished us by not returning. Not even to refill ice tea or give us a bill. The woman manager was indifferent and even rude when we tried to track down the waiter. Still tipped 20% on a lunch bill. Regret that. La Calle Doce has lost a loyal customer that has patronized their restaurant for 25+ years. Sad. read more

We stopped in for a late Saturday lunch. There weren't many patrons around 2PM. We easily found parking out front but I can imagine if it were later those spaces would be full. They start you off with 2 salsas & a plate of flour tortillas with butter. Both salsas (green & red) were great. The red has a good heat level if you like spicy. The flour tortillas were fantastic!! My husband ordered tacos and I had a chili relleno with cheese inside and cheese in the outside. Probably too much cheese but that was my fault. I should have tried the ranchero sauce. The chili relleno was really good. It had that spongelike (good in this case) texture that comes from a good batter. The menu had a lot of interesting offerings that I would love to go back & try. I wanted several different seafood dishes but a chili relleno is always my jam so I stuck with that. Fantastic service too. The lady that waited on was so pleasant and I really wish I had jotted her name down for kudos. The lady at the front of the house was just as nice. read more

Really craving chicken soup. The one they serve is incredibly salty and inedible. The quesadillas are sub par and the enchilada verdes sauce looks so curdled on my plate with the ends of the enchiladas hardened and chewy as if it's was left under the hot lamp for too long. Let me start by saying the staff is friendly! The restaurant is really nice and well kept. However, I was hoping to have a great meal, but was utterly disappointed. I was under the impression by google that this food was going to be delicious, however, I should have stayed home and cooked. It's quite flavorless and expensive. Skillman Street location. Positives - large servings. Caldo de Pescado was very good. Nice decor & there's a patio. With several friends early on a Saturday night. Ordered Al Mojo de Ajo Snapper. Tasteless bland food. Sauteed snapper was bland and served on a wilted lettuce leaf. Grilled vegetables were waterlogged, but a good mix. Bland rice & peas. Cabbage "slaw" was just sliced raw cabbage with 1/2 ring of raw green bell pepper. Slow inexperienced service. Took a long time to get our food out and even longer to get our checks. Sixth Grade Girls All Sports Banquet...that's me. I'm the idiot who offered to put this together. Yep. Try finding a room on a Friday night at 7 p.m. for 40-50 people. I dare you. Most places say the following: "We'd love to but that's our busiest night and we need all our rooms to seat regular patrons." Or you get, "Sure no problem. That will be $30 per person including kids meals and not including drinks." NO ONE wanted us. I felt so dejected. Then La Calle Doce saved the day. "Yes you may have our brand new room. How about an all you can eat fajita bar with all the fixins' for $9 kids and $11 adults including drinks?! Sure you can bring your own dessert. I don't understand how anyone could give this place less than 4 stars. The food is delicious and he atmosphere is so loving! Perfect for a romantic date night, casual solo dinners, special occasions with family, etc. We had the ceviche, oysters, and Cancun fondue! Everything was so full of flavor and satisfying. La Calle Doce in Lakewood finally reopened after being closed forEVER after the fire they had. But WOW what a makeover! The entire place is now in shades of blue. The floor is a nice blue color like water, the walls are pale blue, and the booths are covered in dark blue-almost black leather. Then from the ceiling they have these large ornate silver things hanging which are pretty cool. Definitely swanky. The bar is more open now so that you can see the entire restaurant from each location. I also noticed an upstairs private party room and a glass enclosed private party room in the front. The makeover alone is worthy of the extra star! The food is still the bomb as well. I had to get the tacos de pescado because I have been missing it. Still comes with the fish soup to start, the cucumber salad, and rice with peas and carrots in it. The bf had the snapper and it was also amazing. Our waiter started out a little slow, but once we asked for a mini-Spanish lesson to pronounce something on the menu he became much more chatty. I had a couple of top shelf margs as well - had to test out if I was still drunk from the night before by starting again. I was and continued to be so after those yummy drinks. If you've never been to a Mexican seafood place you should go here and give it a try! read more

The second Tuesday of every month is the traditional "Ceviche on the Beach" night at my Playa del Carmen bungalow in Mexico. (It's only 5300 square feet, so it officially earns the title of a "bungalow.") When I buzzed Lillian, my pilot, on Tuesday morning to ready the Gulfstream for a trip down south, she notified me that damn Lucas had recruited her as his new pilot behind my back. (He better not beg me again to bankroll another Star Wars flick!) Too late to get another pilot and needing my cerviche fix, I headed over to La Calle Doce in Lakewood sans date. THE GOOD: The Ceviche was terrific; on par with that made by my Playa del Carmen chef, Enrique. I chased the Ceviche with Huachinango a la Veracruzana; almost as tasty as the 37 pound red snapper that I caught off of Costa Rica, in my yacht, The Misty Lass. The service was snappy, efficient, and friendly. THE BAD: Sadly, La Calle Dolce does not face a Caribbean beach. (I might have to do something about that.) THE UGLY: Since I was without a companion, some might have thought I looked the part of an unwanted waif; especially since I was wearing a blazer from last season's Ermenegildo Zegna collection. I want to start off by saying that I am giving this restaurant two stars--not for the food, but for the service. The food is good which is why I spent $60 on a to-go order tonight. It was $58, but then they told us they forgot to charge us the $2 for avocados. When we asked if we could have an extra rice they said "Sure! But we'll have to charge you." I declined. I paid and grabbed my order, drove home and sat down to eat with my family. Immediately upon opening the bags we noticed that we had absolutely no hot sauce. Forgetting chips... I can understand that. Forgetting an entree... People make mistakes. I can understand forgettting pretty much anything except for the main garnish for just about every Mexican dish. The large bag of chips that came with our meal remained uneaten. Even with said mistakes, I normally wouldn't write a bad review for a place. What really upset me was the way I was treated when I called to voice my concerns. I called and spoke with the manager. She wasn't very pleasant at the beginning of the call. I voiced my contentions and when I was done, all she had to say was: "Well, I gave you eight tortillas." Not "Sorry, how can we help you?" Not, "Hey, I'm really sorry that we messed up your dinner, what can we do to make it better?" I informed the manager that perhaps we should take our business elsewhere. Still, I received no apology. Maybe Monday is not their best night? When I moved here La Calle Doce was still closed so when my gals and I were picking a place for our Monday Ladies Dinner I was so excited when LCD was suggested. We arrived at 8 and were immediately seated in a booth by the bar, I could see other tables but no one was sitting near us. Right away there was a bad sign, no drink menu...two of us got the standard rocks margarita and after recieving no suggestions from our server and literally just walking up to the unattended bar to see what they had to offer the third settled for rum & diet. Hello....you have a full bar, create a freakin' drink menu, I'll make it up for you if you would like! Also, the ritas are weak...I've always lived in TX so I guess I'm just a rita snob by now. The menu is impressive and it took us a while to decide but I went for the California Mahi Mahi tacos and the girls both got the Paella. Before the food arrived we were each served a cup of the house soup which was quiet good, I'd actually go back just for a bowl if I was having one of those I need soup days. The Mahi was delicious but the kitchen went overboard on the sauce and trying to scrape some off didn't help. Next time I will prob ask for it on the side and add some sliced avocado like fellow Yelper Lisa did (wish I had read that yesterday!). The Paella is a huge serving and comes out on a screaming hot griddle so do not order this at a crowded table or with small children. Unfortunately the huge serving is 80% rice so unless you really like rice you could probably finish this off yourself. 1 did 1 didn't. We didn't stick around for dessert but we usually don't anyways. The prices were a little high and the portions a little large, I'd prefer to see both reduced. The service was polite but bipolar...we saw no one for a good 20 minutes and then were checked on three times in about 7 minutes. Based on the other reviews I will likely give this place one more shot, I just hope our blah experience was a fluke. read more

I last ate at La Calle Doce on 12th Street 10 years ago and I suddenly recall why it's been so long. It wasn't good then and it's not good now. Mexican Food? Yum! Seafood? Yes! Together? Hmmmmm....I have to admit I'm a bit picky on that one. And to be completely fair...I know a lot of folks who like this place. A small group of us met up for dinner and drinks. While I ended up not ordering a cocktail, several had the house margarita which was well like. The chips and salsa here are bit different with thicker chips and two kinds of salsa: red and green. The green salsa is forgettable and I prefer the spicier red salsa myself. Most entrees at dinner are served with fish soup. Wasn't feeling it. The last time I was here, I had the Tilapia which I hated. This time I opted for the Plato Combinacion, which has fries, shrimp, and catfish. Boring? Sure.The fish and shrimp were alright but the fries were quite soggy. The mariachi band here is fun but the service is forgettable. And forgetful. I think we had to ask for everything twice. Prices are steep but to be fair, the entrees are quite large. While I'm not a fan, I know some Yelpers enjoy La Calle Doce. It was 10 years since my last visit and my next visit is probably another 10 years away. read more

Exquisite taste and quality of mexican food. Expansive menu includes traditional tex-mex, and all kinds of seafood and sauces and meats. Good luck deciding. It is all delicous. I like how you can order really good tasting cooked vegetables and also baked potato as sides and can loose your mind picking out mexican flavors and seafood (fish, shrimp, ceviche) yes yes yes my favorite mexican restaurant in town. And yes there is alot of good competition but hard to compete with a place with this much variety. read more

So sorry to have to give this location a horrible review on the fact that the owner was a complete jerk to our family. We ordered a multitude of items...with one dish being some tacos that we shared and my son and I bit into pieces of metal from the grill. We politely told the waiter who told the owner. They offered us a dessert but I said no thank you..if you take the plate off the ticket that would be just fine. The waiter advised me that the owner/manager wouldn't and I spoke to the manager just saying I didnt feel it was fair for me to pay for the meal where 2 tacos were tainted. He became upset and irate and was very rude and was uninterested in what was wrong with my plate. Sad that he treats his clients like this and his waitstaff seemed very scared of him. He ended our conversation by stating he didn't "care if we ever came back to his establishment or not". and "if something ends up being wrong with my mouth or stomach, he was not worried about it because they had insurance." I loved this restaurant, and the mariachi guy was awesome!! They start out with fresh chips and green and red salsa. If you are thirsty, I highly recommend the horchata drink, it's a sweet drink with rice water. I ordered the diablo grilled shrimp with their spicy chipotle sauce, grilled veggies and rice. This Mexican restaurant specializes in seafood. I ordered the fish tacos which are three corn tortillas with grilled white fish, onions and bell peppers along with rice and a cucumber, daikon and carrot salad. The tacos came piping hot, but the fish was bland which was disappointing. The rice had the mix of cubed carrots and peas which I found odd as it's not something I expect in Mexican rice. As an side dish, entrees are served a cup of cod stew. The soup was delicious! Chunks of cod and potato in light tomato broth with chopped cilantro. I could have made a meal of a bowl of this soup. Service was prompt and attentive. My friend ordered their cheese enchiladas which looked good if you want to overdose on cheese. The portions were huge! read more

Came here last minute on a whim after riding by on our bicycles... Neither man friend or I had been since they reopened after the fire. The place looks AMAZING! I have to be honest, I can't really remember exactly what it looked like before but I don't remember thinking it was as nice as it is now. The whole place is much more open and airy and they moved the bar up toward the front of the restaurant which looks great! We, of course, had a couple yummy margaritas and started with the ceviche. I LOVE ceviche, and there's is one of my favorites. It's super simple with avocados, tomato and green onions and always tastes really fresh! After debating on what to order because SO much stuff on the menu sounded amazing, I decided on the Mahi Mahi tacos and man friend got the shrimp enchiladas. My tacos were great!! The Mahi was seasoned and grilled perfectly, topped with cabbage slaw and just enough of a spicy cream sauce. I ordered some sliced avocado to go with it, which was a perfect accompaniment. Man friend ate every last bite of his enchiladas, so I'm guessing they were pretty tasty too! This is such a great, locally owned restaurant to have in our neighborhood. We'll definitely be swinging by here a lot this some to cool down with some 'ritas and ceviche!! read more

it takes a whole lot of skill (in my mind) to out-do my abuelita's cooking but Calle Doce definitely did that. the tortillas are made right in front of you, home style and they are delicious and fluffy, while not too lard-heavy. I had the ceviche as an appetizer and it was the most flavorful ceviche I have had to date. the chicken tacos were astounding and a sopapilla to end the night? yes please. the margarita options were awesome! try the hibiscus flavor. I will definitely be bringing family and friends here more often! read more

I love the idea of La Calle Doce. Once a year or so we decide we want to eat there. Apparently I don't like Mexican Seafood as much as I think I do. Yes it's good, but I can never decide what I want. Paella, paella always sounds good to me. Why do I think I want paella? I don't like it. Yet I sit eating this concoction of rice, fish, and meat thinking why didn't I just order fish tacos.. Now the dish itself is pretty tasty, I just don't love it. They do have some dang good margaritas and the ceviche is pretty tasty as well. I guess I need to go again, next year, and try to decide on something other than paella. As far as this location goes the service is always great and I've never had to wait long for a table. They do have a small patio for those nice evenings when you want to sit outside. read more

My husband and I just had pretty much the most disappointing restaurant experience we've had in awhile...bad enough for me to register for Yelp just to post about it. The "Premium" Margaritas with Herradura Silver were absolutely undrinkable they were so disgusting. I ordered the Spanish Paella, my husband ordered the Blackened Salmon Tacos (which he said were actually pretty good). My paella was nothing more than the usual seafood, pork & chicken mixed with some Spanish style rice. There was no saffron, as the menu boasted, and it was the driest, blandest paella I have ever had and I had so been looking forward to some good paella tonight. :( read more

I actually went there with another reviewer and I want to add to the Paella topic. Do not get the Paella if you are expecting yellow rice with lots of different seafood and some veggies. The dish was probably about 5 lbs of rice and there was 1 clam (chewy), 1 mussle (I didnt bother eating it after eating the clam), 1 large shrimp, 2 pieces of dark meat chicken with skin on (left over chicken?) and a few small pieces of sauage. The waitress warned us that the dish was large which was fine with me because I would take it home as leftovers. She should've known that I didn't like it much when I declined her offer of a to-go box later. My rum and diet was eh. Nothing special. Soup was nice. I guess next time, I don't think there will be one for me, I would get fish tacos. read more

A mexican/seafood place worth trying out. I was craving some steak fajitas the other day but not too much for the seafood but this place had it covered. Walked in after 3pm with no wait. We sat on the patio and was impressed with cleanliness. Plus, it had a modern feel With cool and Interesting lamp/chandelier hanging, which I wasn't particularly expecting. Our server has to be the highlight of the visit besides the food. Her name was Cecilia. She had perfect timing and was very nice and sweet. I had the steak fajitas, and my boyfriend had the enchilada Verde. Both filling and delicious. Its a bit more pricey than your typical Mexican restaurant but the atmosphere and service is more than worth it. read more

Not sure what happened here. Everyone said the ceviche was amazing, but we were universally disappointed. The single tostadas de ceviche is a good size, but the fish was way overcooked and approaching fish jerky. The shrimp kebab lunch had only three shrimp, and the barbeque sauce was on the sweet and oily side. Not terrible, but Dallas can do better. Tortilla soup was pretty good. Vuelve a la Vida (Oyster/shrimp/scallops/octopus cocktail) was very good, heavy on oysters and shrimp, but it didn't quite make up for the ceviche. read more

When I called to make a reservation one of them just answers and when I was going to tell them how manny ppl was going to be in my party she interrupted me asking "what time " in the rudest way and only saying they were going to wait for me without even knowing how manny ppl was going to be in my party. Then when we got there my fiancée told the guy at the door (which I assume he was the owner ) that we had a reservation at 2:45 he interrupted her (again) and reply I don't care just tell me how manny ppl is in ur party which kinda give me a feeling of leaving the place but we still try to ignore it and stay After that my fiancée ordered some shrimp al mojo de ajo which tasted awful and she didn't even eat it so I told the waiter to take it away and bring me another dish. I thought I wasn't going it get charge for it but I still did I didn't say anything and paid for it. The waiter was good but the food I just don't know how ppl still coming here and pay $15 for 6 pieces of mini shrimp I wouldn't mind pay for it if at leaves it was another class of shrimp at least a lil bit bigger. I work in the restaurant business and I can tell u right away all the sea food produces and ingredients are of the lowest quality. Years ago I was a frequent visitor at their Oak Cliff location, tonight we went with a group from my wife's job to the Skillman location. The red snapper was inedible, it was so badly overcooked. My wife's salmon was essentially in the same shape. When it came time for the check, the enterprising waiter put in a 20% tip for himself with no recourse for the inedible food. A visit to the manager got the removal of the fish, but everything else on the plate was an a la carte side order, Everybody can send out a bad plate, but not doing anything about is unforgivable. read more

First visit since they reopened. It was early evening on a Saturday and we had the place to ourselves for the better part of our meal. People here have commented on the house starter soup but that is misleading. It is only with certain (I believe seafood dinners) menu items and it is basically a tomato based fish soup with diced potatoes and a few other vegetables. My daughter ordered the Fried Shrimp ($5.95) which consisted of a giant plate, half salad and half fries - with 3 shrimp. My partner ordered the chicken tacos which he said were quite good. I had the Red Snapper/Mojo de Ajo $15.95 which came with rice, grilled veggies, and cabbage slaw. Rice and slaw were mostly forgettable. The new deco is great and in addition to the larger areas previously mentioned, there is an area off the main dining area that seats 10 and can be curtained off for privacy. read more

La Calle Doce never disappoints! I've been here several times with my husband so I suggested it to my extended family for my grandmother's 90th birthday dinner. I highly recommend their fish soup, and the guava margarita! My grandmother who has had her fair share of Chile Rellenos (it's her favorite food) in her lifetime, raved about how it was the best relleno she's ever had! They also have a very kind gentleman who walks around, sings and plays the guitar. The service is always wonderful, the food is always fresh, and the drinks are so delicious! read more

We really like this place. Mrs. Bear says it's definitely Mexico City style authentic. Mexican seafood is their main cuisine. Love the decor. We love the huge margaritas, ceviche, enchiladas, fish tacos, everything we've had we have enjoyed. The Tres Leches cake is a favorite dessert for us. The waiters are friendly and helpful. The kitchen can be slow at times so it pays to not be in a hurry. read more
