The BEST pupusas in Long Beach! My boyfriend and I have dined here multiple times, La Ceiba never disappoints. The supreme nachos are huge, piled with deliciousness. We always get a pork and cheese pupusa that's a must! Parking can be a bit rough since it is located on 7th st but the food is definitely worth it. Good food here -- the pupusas are what we come in for and they don't disappoint. I love the traditional queso, as well as the revuelta options so I always get those two. They are HUGE and I can only eat two when I am absolutely starving. Even then I need to be rolled out in a wheelbarrow. Service is a tad slow sometimes, but only because pupusas have to be made to order -- I don't mind waiting to get these delicious treats. Customer service makes or breaks a business. I have gone to La Ceiba more than enough times to know what to expect, believe me. I am feeling very indifferent as I type this review, for, over the years there's been little to no changes. (Good or bad) And I am not one of those people that have a bad experience at a restaurant their first time and go off to write a bad review on Yelp potentially ruining a business. I give a place more than enough chances to demonstrate their service, as we all have bad days. Personally, I think the food is good. I have had their pupusas, I've had their burritos, their nachos, their pollo en tajadas, tacos, different things here and there. I have brought several people to this restaurant (friends and relatives not familiar to Long Beach) as well as hosted a birthday dinner here. The food is always good, can't complain about that. Their carne Asada nachos are delicious, depending on the day you order them, sometimes there's more meat, sometimes there's an overload of beans. Their burritos are pretty good too. The pupusas are very small and greasy, (and it's kind of funny how people go nuts about this spot for pupusas. I have definitely had better and I wonder how people would feel about the place where I go for pupusas. They're incredible.) The interior is very colorful, a lot of the decor has to do with their country of origin, including a wall with a huge painting which is quite beautiful. They have karaoke on the weekends I believe, mostly Spanish but you can ask for English music. Their biggest setback is the customer service. They've had the same 2 waitresses over the years and I don't know if they're relatives which could mean why they still have them around, but most of the time they're terrible. (The owner and his wife and son regularly wait tables as well) Way too many times have I gotten an order wrong. I lost count. And the thing is, I order in Spanish to make it easier. Yet they still get my party's orders wrong. (Including the night of our party of 18. Which was frustrating.) They lack attentiveness. To be fair, it does get pretty packed on some days, but even when it's empty and it's just me and the person I'm with, they don't check on us, they don't even bring our drinks until one of us asks for them or when the food is ready. Which is very frustrating, given, I have been a regular customer despite the constant disappointments. And as a regular customer one would think it's appropriate to expect to be treated nicely every once in a while. Given, someone whom has had bad experience after another, continues to frequent the business. One example is a recent phone order. I usually order a carne Asada burrito with chile verde over it. Both waitresses have taught me that you call that a chile verde Asada burrito. I have ordered it like that for years. This time, the owner himself answered. I emphasized on carne Asada (I cannot eat pork currently). When I realized they were pork I called to let them know that I had ordered Asada and IMMEDIATELY the owner said, yelling harshly, "NO you ordered a chile verde burrito, that's what you ordered!" So I told him that I had told him Asada with chile verde over it, both burritos because I can't eat pork. And he continued to say that I ordered chile verde. He also had the audacity to say "You need to learn how to order!!! You don't order correctly, I'm the one who took your order that's what you ordered, learn to order." EXCUSE ME? I put the phone away from my ear and told my boyfriend that he was yelling at me, and telling me to learn how to order. I hung up, because it was going to get ugly. Not only was I furious because I don't allow anyone to yell at me like that, it was OUTRAGEOUS that the owner was the one yelling at me, instead of apologizing and offering to fix it (I had not eaten it, just cut into it revealing the pork) I didn't even call to get it re-made or to receive a discount. I was just letting them know. I couldn't believe the owner was being so rude. I remained civil and talked about it with friends and relatives whom have also had bad experiences there. Considering that countless of times we have been disappointed, I can say that I won't be returning to La Ceiba, and neither will several others. You'd be surprised at how many people stop supporting businesses that mistreat their customers or provide poor service consistently. Appreciate those that spend their money at your business. Also, clean your bathroom. It is filthy! And stop using it for storage of vegetables! read more

La Ceiba is fairly new to the block (I think it's about 5 years old), but damn is this place delicious and reasonably priced with a TON of different options. If you've never been or seen this place, the huge 99 CENT PUPUSAS sign might point you to the right way. I've only ever been here for the pork and cheese pupusas and have always left satisfied. Do know that they offer the deal from Tuesday to Thursday, so expect it to be packed during lunch or dinner hours on those days. You can always call in to pick up your order, but expect to wait at least 25 minutes or so. Check this place out with some friends to really explore the menu. There are foods from plenty of different countries, so it's nice to see the country of origin for the particular dish you're sharing. Definitely worth checking out, but (like I said), prepare to wait. Be patient, for you will be rewarded with delicious food! Also, the neighborhood isn't in the worst part of Long Beach, so if you can get over that, then you should be set. read more

To make it brief: They got my order wrong (asked for chile relleno burrito, received a meat burrito with verde sauce). Waitress never refilled our drinks. Waitress ignored me and my wife when I tried to order more food and have my item corrected. Waitress did not bring the receipt to the table. While waiting at the register the waitress checked someone out who came after me and then ignored me - the cook had to come around to check me out. I was charged more than I was led to believe I would be charged. There was no greeting as we entered or left. And to top it off, for the first ten or fifteen minutes of our visit we were the only diners there. There was no reason for so much to have gone so wrong, especially at the beginning. By the time we left only 3 other tables had been filled and one or two people came to get drinks at the bar, all entering at different times. Okay, not the first ever, but the first here. I'd be delighted to see this place get more business, as it would be well deserved. Yelp needs to expand their listing of types of restaurants. After only having it twice, I'm sold. The first was at a luncheon provided to our work, with containers full of marinated beef and chicken, so flavorful my mouth waters even now as I type this. Pieces of platanos fritos and potato and yuca made it unique. Their refried beans and rice... mmmm, just what I like. Perfectly done in my humble opinion. The crema agria nice. Today I ordered the cheese and squash pupusa (not squash in the buttery sense either) and it was good. The thick pupusa and gooey cheese bringing happiness to my belly. Three days a week you can get $.99 pupusa's with a minimum order of 10. Salvadorian, Hondorian, Mexican - you'll find bits of it all here. The restaurant is bright and clean, and good for conversation while you're waiting for your food. Only negative that I've found so far: the Horchata not so good. Such great food and feel here. I've traveled in Central America a couple of times and love that La Ceiba is so authentic to that experience. My boyfriend says the Pollo com Tajadas (their special chicken and plantains dish) is amazing and at that price, a steal. He recommends that dish for sure. I've had a vegetarian burrito that was actually very good and didn't taste like some afterthought vegetarian fare other places serve. I'd get it again. We've also gotten pupusas to go, and were delighted to see that it came with (very authentic) baggies of curtido (cabbage slaw) and salsa. They tasted great and were sooooooo filling. In reading the reviews I assumed the food would be of high quality. In entering there was no greeting to the customers. We got a head nod and a what's up from a man in a hoodie. I'm sorry but that is not a proper greeting. There was no one who assisted us to our table. We sad where ever we pleased and we assisted by a young woman who was friendly right off the bat. The food took about 20 min to be brought to our table. The food was not of quality. I orders a pupusa revuelta and one of chicharron. The revuelta was okay but the chicharron was dry with no flavor at all. The restaurant is a mixture of Honduran, Salvadorean, and Mexican food. This mixture is not allowing them to concentrate on each plate with quality. What made the ambiance uncomfortable was the owner son. He was being obnoxious while watching the clippers basketball game. He was rowdy and dressed in a hoodie and saggy shorts. Overall we got up and left immediately not wanting to order more. I like my pupusas big and a little crispy on the outside and that's what you'll find here. My tacos Hondureños although only two in quantity realllllly filled me up. I love the red pickled onions they put on top. They have interesting Central American beers here that I had never tried before. Refreshing from the usual choices. My place to go to for pupusas in the LBC! Delicious! And on Tuesday & Wednesday nights, three kinds of them are only .99 cents each. I pile on a heap of the seasoned cabbage and salsa, and go to town on 'em! And they go great with an order of platanos frito con frijol y crema. I love the horchata there. It is not the rice milk you typically get at a Mexican restaurant, this is central American style, made from a type of calabash seed instead of rice, much more flavorful. They have a nice variety of central American items on the menu, grouped by their country of origin. Do a little research of the menu items before you go, if you're not familiar with the food of that region. I look forward to trying other menu items there soon! read more

My boyfriend and I have been here on 2 different Friday nights. We ended up parking in the nearby plaza with Total Fashion (previously Fresh n Easy) since we couldn't find street parking. When we entered the restaurant we were welcomed by the sound of people singing karaoke. The server was quick to take our drink order and provide free chips and salsa (very yummy). I had different pupusas and a tamale. The tamale was soft and had so much flavor, as did the pupusas. By the time we finished our plates, we were really full. First the bad. Went on Sunday evening. Despite there being only one other family here, the wait was rediculous. Could not get waitress attention no matter what. Badly understaffed. We tried to replace cheese pupusa with another one, and she just brought and billed both. They overcharged us some amount and then just gave us a dollar bill for 'the difference'. She suggested a Baleada. We had the following conversation: THE HONDURAN WAITRESS: Try a baleada. It's a folded thick wheat tortilla with mashed beans, cheese, cream, meat, and avocado. It's a traditional Hunduran meal. ME: Got it. Re-fried beans, cheese, tortilla, etc. So it's basically a glorified taco. Bring me one please! THE HONDURAN WAITRESS: No! I was on my way to meet someone in Long Beach and passed this restaurant along the way. We decided to go there for dinner because he is from Central America and wanted me to try the food. This is a little hole in the wall restaurant that if you blinked, you would miss it....so don't blink, or you'll miss out on some good food. I ended up having the pupusa. It melts in your mouth. This place is the local pupusareia in long beach. I really love good pupusa. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadorian dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla (made using masa de maíz, a cornmeal dough used in Mesoamerican cuisine)that is usually filled with a blend of cheese , pork and beans. I usually just get queso. I really like eating here, admittedly I'm not a huge fan of coming here to eat at night, but that's because the place gets really raucus with karaoke and I don't understand anything they are singing. But otherwise, I would highly recommend this place for pupusa. It's delicious. read more

The original recipe for Salvadoran salsa is not what is followed in this restaurant. you as a costumer receive the leftovers of panes con pollo salsa ( bread filled with chicken).
