I used to love this place. Certainly not for its decor. I truly believe not one dime has gone back into the business. The bathrooms, the bar, and even the tables and silverware are disgusting. But the food was okay. Well, that was then. He got so cheap, if you ask for two hot cherry peppers, they cut them in half. And I have to pay in cash. Ripoff. I so glad to hear this place is empty. Very disappointed in La Manda's. They've always been known for having great, classic Italian food, but after my experience today I won't be coming back. Calamari was just ok- but no legs. I hate when it's just the rings, but ok... The real problem was my main dish. I ordered chicken parm for main course. Upon the first bite it tasted smokey and burnt. My mom tasted it and was repulsed as well. We kindly asked the waitress to take it back and she replied that the manager would be out shortly. His response about the taste was that he tasted it and it tasted fine. Then handed me a menu to pick something else and walked away. I waited and then asked my waitress if I could just get another chicken parm. She said she would have to find out. (Wtf?) The manager then came back out and said you just must not like the taste of it so I don't think we should make you another one. (Again wtf.) I said fine I'll eat my side dish of spaghetti I don't want your food. Something was definitely off and I've never sent food back in my life. Had dinner Sat night. Service good, food not so much. Calamari undercooked, sent back once, still nogo. Ended up throwing them out. Had chicken scarp for main course, was good. Can't review food as I walked out 10 minutes of being there. Read some of the reviews so figure give it a shot as was in neighborhood & kids looking for pizza. Well the place I would not call a classic just maybe too cheap to update. It's pretty depressing environment, dirty and just outdated. Even the menus were disgusting to handle. And I like a dive joint like the next. Then what's up with no rowdy kids signs? One maybe in entrance but plastered all around tables? Really. single out cases individually no need to threaten all patrons. That & lack of children's menu gives you an appearance of not kid friendly. The final reason walking out, there were 3 tables seated. Took over 10 minutes for someone to come to our table. Place is awful & obviously survives by those that feel some childhood nostalgia there. BEWARE OF DOG!!!! The pizza here is great... I fly in from LA and that's all I crave. But unfortunately the man who seated us Sly (either the owner or manager) is a complete asshole. This is not the first time his attitude has become a problem. My family has been patrons for over 35 years! I very politely asked to sit somewhere else because my family didn't fit in the booth, while the restaurant was only half full, and was rudely told at the top of his lungs "absolutely not!" ... Then I asked to put a chair at the end of the booth and he responded in an even ruder way! The waitresses were friendly and helpful but the staff was obviously afraid of him. Overall I can't believe you would ever treat a paying customer that way... He completely ruined my going away dinner right before I flew back. I work in the restaurant business... No frills, but very good! I mean it looks like an old old diner from the 40s. The portobello ravioli was amazing! The meat lasagna is pretty good. Get a side of veggies. It comes in a good portion and it tastes so good! I LOVE the signs that remind people to reign in their kids and make them behave! Nothing ruins a night like being next to an unruly, obnoxious child! Last i ate here was in 2003 and ill never go back. The Meatballs were clearly just microwaved over cooked hamburger meat. Disgusting!. I also noticed through the window to the kitchen, there was NOT ONE Italian in there. My wife and I decided to meet up here with the kids (we had both been running errands) for a Friday dinner. We had eaten here once before, but had both forgotten if we had liked it or not. After this experience, we will hopefully never forget. We knew what to expect with this place, as far as atmosphere, and we didn't mind. It wasn't pretentious, and it was crowded, but we figured with an active crowd and kitchen - food would be fresh, and service brisk. We were greeted by a very nice ethnic and older woman who made us feel comfortable. She was unboxing desserts and putting them on a silver tray (this will be important later) - again we figured.. no pretense. We were with two children, who are generally well-behaved, and noted to them the signs all over the restaurant about children having to behave. Before we were seated, the man who was the owner was trying to be friendly with a young boy also there and pointed out two of my daughters to him (aged 5 and 7) and said, "Hey look, theres some girls for you." I didn't think it was cool though I understood he was being playful, and while I generally don't have a stick up my butt, I semi-shrugged it off except for remarking, "They're not FOR anybody." We were seated. My wife ordered veal, and I ordered the restaurant's special (Chicken Scarp) which comes with a side of pasta (so I had linguine with garlic and oil). We also ordered their pizza bread as an appetizer. Everyone was hungry, and my kid's ate the regular (not warm) bread that was brought to the table. I appreciated that a bottle of water was brought to the table, because I rather be able to fill my own glass up when it is empty if I can't count on the staff to notice and do it. I ordered a glass of wine, and just got the house wine when the waitress didn't seem to want to recommend anything. I was the only one who ate the Pizza Bread (more on that later) and diligently listened to my wife who told me not to eat all of it because there was a lot of food and pasta coming. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. I'm used to Italian American Restaurants with generous portions sizes - where you inevitably bring something home to warm up the next day (See Valentinos). This is not the case here. In any case, the food also wasn't so good that I would want to take it home. As other reviewers have mentioned, the food tasted like it was microwaved or re-heated. My wife remarked that her veal was flavorless with a weird consistency. The chicken scarp sauce was OK, but the chicken itself was bleh. Because I was hungry, I did eat the whole thing, but was still hungry due to the small portions - isn't that what the side of pasta is for? However, the amount of pasta on the side couldn't have been more than a cup to a cup and a half's worth. It was really strange. The linguini with garlic and oil was more oil than garlic. What was more remarkable was that neither of my children finished their small pasta (all they had) because they didn't like it. (So we had to go get something else later in the evening for them). But none of this is why this rating is one star - it is this bizarre experience. My wife wanted to get out of there as soon as possible and so I wanted to take the left over pizza bread, which I had doused with their ok gravy (the waitress corrected me twice and told me that it was marinara (yeah that's what I call sauce - even if it doesn't have meat). I asked the bus boy to bring me a to-go container because I ALWAYS pack my own to-go food. He told me he couldn't. So then I asked the waitress, who told me that she couldn't. So then I asked nicely to speak to the manager - who came by and quickly quipped that he was the owner, and that he didn't allow packaging the food at the table, but as the owner would wrap it up himself. I should have asked him why he had this policy. I should have asked him why people couldn't put their own food (in this case, a piece of bread) in a bag themselves, and more specifically, why he had a problem with that when conversely, when I walked in, I had to wait to be seated as they "unboxed" cupcakes and a few cannollis onto a tray right in the walkway/entrance of the restaurant. I thought there was no pretense. So now we were at an impasse. He saw that this is what I wanted, and still he insisted that he do it (and why would I trust someone in the backroom with my food at this point, after I knew my simple request had annoyed him) - and he still said no. What happened to, "The Customer is Always Right?" - especially if it is such a non-consequential thing. There are no table cloths in this place. People come here in the same attire that they shop at Walmart.. What am I missing? Why put on airs? Does it take away too much time from your staff (how could it? I want to do the work). So I left the food, left the food that I had paid for, tipped the bus boy, noted to myself we would never come back, and that I would take the time to post this review. read more

This place is truly authentic. No frills - just really good food - and attentive service. Of course, we left the kids at home, and as the other reviewer mentioned, the signs warning you to keep kids away are everywhere. There was a decent selection of half-bottles of wine, which is always a wonderful surprise - and we got a very nice Chianti for $15. Followed that with once of the famous pizzas and a daily special - portabello mushroom ravioli with alfredo sauce. The ravioli were terrific - I had to fight my wife to get my equal share. The pizza is indeed great - the crust was thin but cake-like, and topped with great cheese. Not usually a cash kind of guy, so I was lucky to have enough to cover dinner (OK, I had to dip into my wife's cash stash to make it) but next time I'll know - and there will definitely be a next time! read more

Upon entering this ZERO frills establishment, you would probably stereotype that standing at the bar would be the post-work middle-class hard-working right winger crowd discussing politics and angst against the city-like urban area liberals while drinking beers and laughing in harsh, deep raspy voices as one beer follows another. Well, as soon as you enter this restaurant, and see the bar - this expectation will be met ten-fold - in fact, I've been here twice and have seen those exact men I just described - setting the tone and ambience of this very down-to-earth, rough-around-the-edges restaurant. I am incredibly critical of Westchester restaurants, as I am of ALL suburban restaurants - not to be pretentious, but the best food is not in the suburbs - it's in the cities. My only guess is that it's due to competition. This restaurant is the exception. Both times the food has proven to me to be the best italian food I've eaten in Westchester. The Chicken Scarparo is prepared perfectly. The tripe ala romana was a surprise to see on the menu - and DELICIOUS. The pizza had a perfect balance of cheese & sauce, layered on top of a very thin, crunchy yet also semi-flaky crust. The broccoli rabe and meatballs make for perfect side dishes. Even the simple appetizer salad they have had really great flavor and seasonings. For dessert, the cheesecake and double espresso topped off the meal perfectly. And, to solidify this as a great restaurant - there is an incredibly well-priced wine list! Where else can you get a bottle of wine with your dinner for only about $20.00! This place is great for both TRADITIONAL italian cuisine and traditional AMERICAN Italian Cuisine. My friend had the Chicken Parmesan and absolutely loved it. 5 stars. What Thomas G. says below is perfect. The owner, who normally seats everyone, is an arrogant jerk. I went there with my family this week and when we got there we were able to be seated right away. The only problem was we were put at the table in the bar room next to the kitchen. You might as well eat your dinner with everyone in the kitchen because you're so close and it is extremely noisy. We asked to be moved and he told us it would be 10-15 minutes. We looked around in the main dining room and there were plenty of tables. People who seemed to be regulars walked in minutes after we spoke with him, and were seated right away. Unless you are a regular, this place is not for you. I have been here before and you always receive the same treatment because your not a "regular". We ended up walking out and going somewhere else. La Manda's used to be in my regular Friday night restaurant rotation. I liked the pasta with pesto and the pizza is quite good. I do not have any complaints about the food. It is an above average "red sauce" Italian place. Is the food sophisticated? No. Is it good? Yes. Is the decor dated? Yes but it goes with the old school vibe. So why don't I go there anymore? Simple answer, the owner whose picture you see on Yelp is an arrogant jerk. I stopped going there a few years ago after a really bad experience on Good Friday. I showed up with my wife, mother, father and brother in law at around 9:20 for dinner. The restaurant was empty with the exception of another group. The owner seated the five of us at a table for four! Additionally, the three men in our group were all over six feet tall. Despite our group being stuffed like sardines in a table that was too small, the owner objected to relocating us to a table for six which would suit the size of our party despite the fact that the restaurant only had one other party! His rationale: "I am waiting for the Good Friday rush and if I give you a six seater somebody else will have to wait!" The logic was inexplicable. It was almost 9:30, the restaurant was empty, the "rush" had come and gone. Rather than properly seat a group which was ready, willing and able to pay for his food, he preferred waiting for a "rush" that existed only in his mind. He was quite rude and obnoxious during this exchange. He looked shocked when our group stood up and walked out. Apparently, this fellow is used to people bowing to his idiotic "no soup for you like" dictates. I have not set foot in the place since and discovered that several other regular customers have stopped patronizing the restaurant due to his nonsense. I would have given 3.5 stars for the food if possible and a 1 star for management. Since the kitchen staff and waiters do a good job, I weighed heavily in their favor and bumped the rating up out of respect for their hard work. For a serious good old fashioned red sauce restaurant, LaManda's is teh spot. The food is excellent. I have never had a disppointing meal here. It is also the BEST pizza I have had outside of New York City and I believe it would rival any Pizza you could get anywhere. There are a few favorites that you should't miss. The Chicken Scarpariello and teh Pork Chop with Vinegar Peppers are my go to dishes. I side of Escarole and your in business. The meat dishes all come with a side of pasta. Sorry, but after trying to find reasons to continue to dine at La Mandas, I've simply run out. Granted, its like a time capsule and has great charm, but the food is basic and poorly executed. Even worse - try ordering food to go. We recently did (Chicken Sorrentino and Chicken Francaise) and not only did it take 45 minutes, it was kind of a disaster (again). Here are the lowlights: Chicken Sorrentino (Chicken breast with prosciutto, mozz in a marsala sauce) came with....a postage stamp slice of ham (not prosciutto) and no mozzarella, with canned mushrooms (canned!), swimming in white wine (not sauce - white wine). I'll upload the photo later to show you. It was SAD, and frankly felt that we were ripped off on this one. Pasta side that came with it (linguini with marinara) - definitely made hours prior, overcooked, cold with a dollop of sauce in the middle. Not nearly enough to actually coat more than a couple of strands. Pathetic. If there was a highlight it was the Francaise, but over the last 4 years it has been hit or miss..more miss, though. So sadly, that's it for us at La Mandas. "Jacked" on the take-out, having to wait for inconsistent and mediocre food, and the added bonus of "cash-only" make this a no-go. I have probably driven past La Manda's a gazillion times but never ventured in. But after being told by a couple of people that the food is good, we decided to suck it up and give it a try. How was the F.S.A. (Food, Service, Atmosphere) for La Manda's? Food: La Manda's has all of your standard Italian American fare - pasta, chicken, veal, eggplant dishes for the most part. So we went simple and had a mixed salad and I had veal parmigiana. Big serving of mainly iceberg with a good dressing and a big portion of veal with a decent red sauce and not too much cheese. You can choose a veg or your choice of pasta on the side. Sauce was decent, pasta a bit overcooked. My wife had baked ziti with eggplant, and that was not bad either. Considering they also deliver, if you need an Italian food fix, and can't make it yourself, order from La Manda's instead of Planet Pizza across the street. Again, nothing fancy, but in the comfort zone for many. Service: Wait staff all appeared to be seasoned vets - prompt and friendly. Nothing to complain about here. Host was friendly and seated us promptly as well. Atmosphere: This place has not been touched since the 50's and they are proud of that. This could creep some people out, but it could also give people good flashbacks of their childhood as well. La Manda's is small, dimly lit, family friendly and I do not think they take reservations (and cash only). read more

We were the only ones there, and still we received remarkably slow service. Our waiter seemed put off by our presence. I could see on the thermostat that it was only 65° inside. Windows were open. I wanted to order vodka sauce on my pasta, but the waiter told me no without offering to ask the chef. He brusquely said the chef doesn't like to deviate from the menu. My fiancé & I sat huddled together trying to keep warm for a long time. When the food finally came, our ravioli dish contained only 8 small ravioli & nothing else. It was oddly chewy & cold inside. Any bag of frozen ravioli from a grocery store (cooked properly) would have been better. The calamari was yellow & undercooked with soggy breading that kept falling off. My sauce was oily. I essentially got pasta in a pool of oil & water & nothing else --for $19. We waited long after we finished, but our waiter never came back. Finally, we walked to the front to make it clear we wanted to pay the bill. Someone behind the bar called out & said we could pay him, but we didn't even have a check yet. I heard about this small place from someone who randomly walked in and order food here every week. When the people I babysit for ordered food from this place and brought it back to their house it was probably one of the best penne alla vodkas I've ever had with delicious fresh basil wrapped around the penne (Mm!!) and I've heard stories about their raviolis! So I went there and had the mushroom ravioli and omg I can tell stories now! It was perfectly cooked al dente the sauce was amazing just absolutely simple and good. For a decent price they gave a small portion, but it was enough to savor it and just crave for more when you come back. Also a full bar, Yankees were playing when I came. Based on a recent Thursday evening visit ... ATMOSPHERE: While "classic," the interior needs quite a bit of redesign and is in great need of some TLC. In today's day and age, there is absolutely NO reason why a restaurant (and a very popular one at that) should look like this. Take a few bucks and throw them into some DIY projects even. Due to the tightly-spaced dining room, the noise is somewhat loud. SERVICE: Our waitress was a sweetheart and was very friendly, even offering recommendations. Food was prepared in a timely fashion and we received service with a smile. The owner was walking around greeting a few people, which is a nice touch since it gives off a nice family vibe. When you pay your tab at the bar, don't expect the friendliest bartender there, though. He didn't speak a word - almost like he belongs in the Old West, slinging shots for those trouble-seeking outsiders who come galloping into town ... FOOD: I have to say "very good to excellent," and the entrees are obviously homemade. The Provolone & Olives made us laugh a little, as the Provolone comes out in these big hunk slices, and the presentation is really not something this place worries about: "throw these cheese hunk slices and a few olives on a plate and send 'em out." I enjoyed my Ravioli tremendously and she enjoyed her Eggplant Rollatine just the same. OVERALL: I recommend La Manda's for a simple and enjoyable Italian meal, on the inexpensive side, but don't expect anything "romantic" about the joint. Sat outside they had the napkin and silverware wrapped in plastic. The cheese and spices in separate packets and the owner even came out and put up an umbrella so the sun wouldn't be in my eyes. It must of been about 40 years ago that my parents started taking my sister and I to La Manda's. I'm not sure if the owner is the same but he would come over to our table and ask us to see our teeth and guess our age... something you do to figure out the age of horses. LOL. He must of been a horse racing fan like my Dad. Anyway, we would love to sit at a table with the window to the kitchen. We lived in Connecticut but La Manda's was a regular dinner spot and for good reason. The salad, the pizza bread, the entrees and the pizza.. all yummy. It's hard to understand if you haven't had their salad or pizza bread but it is something you crave years and years later... like your Nonni's sauce. The waiter took our order right away . the food came, and it was rather average for Italian food.. not bad, but not the best either. However, the messy bunch that we were, we got a couple of stains on our shirts.. the waiter handed over to us the "Pigpen" .. one of those stain remover pens. Very helpful. No credit cards accepted means low prices. The decor reminds me of the restaurants I ate in with my parents in the mid-60s. Portions are large, and food quality is good. Red sauce Italian classics and the pizza are the things to eat. If you like eggplant parmagiana this is the place to have some -- a large portion and not overly greasy like some. Your espresso tastes like it came from a stovetop pot and is supplemented with an offer of sambuca at no extra charge. My only con is the calamari fritti which was all rings, no tentacles - still it was a large tasty plate of perfectly fried squid. P.S. Chicken scarpariello, called chicken scarpara here, is the signature dish. If you are looking for Northern Italian there are plenty of other places in Westchester, Go for the Southern Italian-American classics. read more

Went here with a large party and was treated well. Interior is severely dated and menus are pretty gross to handle, but the food is definitely serviceable. All of the signs about having no rowdy kids made me feel a bit uncomfortable (considering I was with 2 special needs kids), but it turned out to be a non-issue. The service was extremely nice and the food was very good. I had the chicken scarparo and I thought it had some excellent flavor, especially with the pieces that managed to stay crispy under the excess of sauce. The chef (owner?) came out a few times and interacted with the patrons and was also very nice and personable. They dealt with our large table (12 people) and were efficient enough to get us in and out as the place started to fill in (we had an early reservation). Overall it's definitely not the best italian food I've had, but it's good enough and with a spruce up of the interior this place could definitely benefit! read more

Traditional Italian far that has been family owned and operated for years! La Manda's has been a well-known gem among residents of Lower Westchester for many, many years because of it's great menu, modest prices, generous portions, and delicious food! I have never left disappointed (or hungry) from La Manda's. They are traditional, so expect wooden furniture and booths. Sly, the owner, is a great business owner as well as poster child for the establishment as he can always be seen working the main dining area while passing by each individual table and making sure that all customer's experiences are satisfactory. Everything I have had here has been great, althouh the shining star is most definitely the Chicken Scarparo dish (it is, in fact, spelled that way). Much like Chicken Scarpiello (skinless chicken in a white wine vinegar sauce) however, you are given the option as to having it served on or off the bone, as well as selecting which type of peppers to accompany your meal and how many of each you would like! The real kicker is the option to have your side of pasta with the same sauce as your meal. DO IT! You will not regret it! 5/5 stars overall. Sorry to have to give the restaurant 2 stars but it's the best I can give. We don't eat there that much anymore because the food has been inconsistent in quality and taste over the past few years. This last experience was not good. I ordered eggplant rollatini. Upon first bite I immediately knew something was not right. There was a definite spoiled taste. I realized on the way home that the oil they fried the eggplant in was bad. We won't be returning. There are other better Italian restaurants to choose from in the area. read more
