This is my husband and my favorite Mexican place in town. He has tried just about everything on the menu and it's all new good. The salsa here is so good that I could eat only that and chips for my meal and be perfectly happy. Even the rice and beans, which I usually don't even eat at other Mexican restaurants, are outstanding. The staff is always friendly and attentive, even when they are very busy. Update: We tried the flautas on a friend's recommendation. From the A La Carte menu it's only $5.00 for one. Flour or corn tortillas. Very filling and sooo good! Lettuce, guacamole, sour cream. Great for a cheap lunch or dinner! I've eaten here three times and always have a salad. Once with grilled shrimp - Excellent! Once with cold shrimp because I forgot to ask for grilled and didn't know it wasn't going to come that way - Still excellent. And today for lunch. Asked for grilled shrimp, they brought grilled chicken. I mentioned it was supposed to be shrimp but said I'd keep it anyway. Glad I did. It was really flavorful and yummy. Later they brought out a generous bowl of cold shrimp as well. These are not tiny bay shrimp. They are big and fresh and so tasty. I don't know what they put on their shrimp and chicken but it's delicious! We'll keep coming back! They also have a restaurant in Paso Robles which is usually a lot more busy than the one in Atascadero it seems. read more

I'm reading the reviews and I just cant understand If I was eating at the same place. The service was okay and very friendly. All of the food we ordered was bland no flavor. This place has been around for ever and I think its stuck in a time warp. I guess some people like their food bland because they do have their regulars. I don't get it. To each there own I guess. Mexican food and hospitality doesn't get any better than at La Mexicana! I was seated right away, followed shortly by free chips & salsa and amazing horchata that the waitress made sure was never empty. The cheese enchiladas came out quickly, steaming hot, and DANG tasty. We were visiting the Central Coast considering it a place to live. So we're staying at the Motel 6 and we see Mexican food across the street. So we try it out. The salsa is delicious and the food is HUGE! We both got burritos...bad idea! It was enough food for like 5 people! I tried to eat it over the course of like 4 hours (back at the hotel) and I never made it through half. It was SO GOOD so I tried to make myself eat it but I just really couldn't. This is by far the worst Mexican food I've ever had in my life. I can't believe I trusted the 4 star reviews. Just picked up a breakfast burrito, got home and found it laying in a pool of grease. I opened up the tortilla to find maybe one egg with a ton of uncooked bacon and potatoes. I was terribly disappointed stopping here for a late afternoon snack. I ordered the nachos. Now, in my opinion it is kinda hard to mess up nachos. I was wrong the nachos I was served were over-baked (burnt edges), the cheese was very light, and the beans didn't have much flavor at all. The saving grace was their guacamole. I would hope for their sake, that their entrees are better, but I did not try them. Along with my overcooked nachos, the beer was not very cold, and the whole experience was soundtracked by the loud staff who were talking and laughing out loud, the whole time at the register. How come you get a hard time when you ask for a bag for the leftover chips? You cannot reuse them to another customer. This has happened on several occasions. This used to be our "go-to" place for Mexican. The food is very good. However, it seems every time we go in there, the woman working there, she may be the owner, is on the phone, on a personal call. Yesterday was the worst. She was on the phone almost the entire time we were there. She waved and pointed to a table when we first walked in. Took our drink and food order while still on the phone. Never once asked us if we needed anything, or how the food was. We had to ask for drink refills and when my husband asked for more water, she filled his glass and just left the pitcher on the table, signifying to us, not to bother her anymore. read more

Chips, Salsa and Guac were great! Had a cheese enchilada, with their homemade red sauce and their specialty, Chili Relleno - delish - wished we lived closer! My hubs and I would be regulars! Four of us stopped in for lunch on a road trip around 2:00 for lunch on 9/7/2015. Plenty of menu items to choose, food was hot and good flavors. Al Pastor was good, Carne Asada was tender and flavorful, but the Carnitas fatty and not a lot of flavor. Only a few tables were filled so service was quick. May have been a bad day for the waitress as she did not come off very friendly to any of us. Ordered a side of Pico De Gallo but never did get it. read more
