A local returning home to Hawaii recommended Lagoon Chinese on our flight into Honolulu. He likes to stop in for lunch or dinner on his way home from the airport. He recommended "Oyster Sauce Chicken Cake Noodle" which I had never heard of. So, my friends and I went straight from the terminal to there and ordered it! The best dish was the fried pork. The service was fine. The food was excellent value for money, the clientele looked like locals and airport employees. It's not fancy, but quite tasty and well off the beaten path of tourists. Chinese cuisine on the outskirts of Honolulu... The location of Lagoon Chinese Restaurant may be a bit challenging for some people. Luckily, we came with a group of 8 people and we started early in the evening... 5:30pm. We stayed until closing time - 8pm. Parking is shared with the Pacific Marina Inn, a 3-star hotel near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Some of us parked on the street and some parked at the hotel for free. We heard about the yummy food here and were pleasantly surprised by the relatively low prices! We even ordered double portion on some items and had a few leftovers! We enjoyed: *Sweet sour cabbage with squid - delicious! *Roast duck - satisfactory *Fried gau gee - okay *Pork with eggplant - good! *Steamed fish fillets - yum! *Honey walnut shrimp - alright! *Oong choi with hom ha (water spinach with fermented shrimp) - spicy was unexpected, however, flavorful overall! *Cake noodles - my favorite! There was a slight crunch since the noodles were on the thin side We had a great experience! I got there early and asked if we could store the birthday cake in their refrigerator - no problem! Lagoon Chinese Restaurant is truly a HIDDEN GEM. Located in the same complex as Pacific Marina Inn, which mainly services patrons at the nearby military bases like Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Tripler Army Medical Center, and Fort Shafter. Potholes, construction, warehouses, drab....not exactly on a street where I imagined myself to be for dinner in the evening, but who knew there were food and lodging over here?! Alice N., Val D., Jan K., & Kristen K. post their wonderful reviews of this Chinese Restaurant, I quickly bookmarked this joint for the next time I was Jonesing for Chinese! This past Friday, one of my homies called me out for "Pau Hana Friday", and he was Jonesing for Chinese, so that's how we ended up at Lagoon Chinese Restaurant in the Lagoon Drive area. Finding this Chinese restaurant can be a little tricky as it's tucked away on a side street kind of a block or so above the park on Lagoon Drive. The Lagoon Chinese Restaurant is sorta of a small Chinese hole-in-da-wall joint, serving local style Chinese grub, as well as some local style plate lunches. Upon walking into the restaurant, I must say it was pretty packed with local folks (that's a good sign!). We decided to seat ourselves at an open table, and shortly after a nice waitress dropped by to give us some menus & water. After looking over the menu, I was feeling da noodle thing, so I ended up getting the "Crispy Chicken with Cake Noodles", and my homie ended up getting the "Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice with Shrimp". What can I say about the grub? Although my plate of grub was Deeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Chicken was crispy as advertised, and the cake noodles was crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, the clear winning plate was my friend, who ordered the Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice with Shrimp! I was in a hurry as I was leaving Hawaii and had to rush to the airport. My daughter was so hungry but she is also very particular about what she eats and how it's cooked. We quickly googled Chinese restaurants around the airport or nearby and to our surprise we found this amazing restaurant. I quickly got out the car and ordered the shrimp and pork fried rice which was delicious and full of flavor. The next thing we ordered was the pork fried noddles . This was amazing !!! I had been longing to dine here after reading the yelp reviews for its sister restaurant, Lam's Kitchen in Chinatown. Head makai on Lagoon Drive (wonder if that's the basis for the restaurant's name) and turn on the second Waiwai Loop. Look for the red lettered sign. The restaurant is physically attached to the Pacific Marina Inn. Turn into the Inn's parking lot or park on the street. The restaurant primarily serves Chinese cuisine and also offers Western menu items such as burgers and breakfast entrees. The restaurant has three large tables to accommodate larger parties, with the remaining tables as four tops. The Chinese food is tasty and reasonably priced. The pork eggplant and fish fillet were delicious. Check the board for daily specials. I'm definitely planning return visits to try other menu items. read more

I was in the area an happened to park right outside this restaurant. A relative of mine always eats here. I decided to take out some food for lunch. I picked two on the Chef's special board. The stewed beef with a little bit of tendon on funn noodles and the fried rice with salty fish. There is a big take out lunch crowd. Both dishes were very good and had a lot of flavor. The beef was nice and tender and the gravy went well with the funn noodles. I would have liked more tendon. There was enough of the salted fish and chicken. I hardly see this item and the older generation like this dish. The oxtail soup looked good as it passed by to be set before a customer. It has airconditioning so it was cool as I waited for my order. They take credit cards and cash. An older restaurant to try. It had good reviews in the newspaper. I noticed that a lot of restaurants have gone down in quality and quantity and I was honestly afraid to try this place and be disappointed but was I wrong! We arrived about 30 minutes before closing and was seated immediately and it was a wonderful experience! You absolutely taste the wok hay in their cooking and the value of our $35 dinner was excellent! The ong choy was crispy and seasoned perfectly with no wilt in the leaves. Salt and Pepper pork was tender with a crispy exterior. Mini chicken cake noodle had perfectly crisped noodles, tender crisped chicken, and the sauce didn't drown the plate. This place has limited parking but they said you can also park in the motel parking lot. The first time I went they ignored us and didn't seat us to eat for over 5 mins when the place wasn't even 1/2 full so we walked out. The lady chased us to the parking lot to offer a table but we already decided to leave. Then we gave them a second chance and their food is actually pretty good as we had heard from others. Good noodles, not crazy about their breakfast items.i would go again. Ambiance is not super nice, not gross, just average but the food is tasty so you don't want to look and judge . I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants, especially those that are family run and mom-and-pop operations. We recently visited such a restaurant near the airport area with no windows, but just a big red name sign on the outside of the restaurant. Its name is Lagoon Chinese Restaurant (LCR). We wouldn't have found this place if it weren't for Yelp or if Ken Lam, the tall manager of Lam's Kitchen in Chinatown, didn't refer us to this restaurant. Yes, LCR is owned by the same family that owns Lam's Kitchen! Two brothers manage the two restaurants, i.e., Ken runs Lam's Kitchen, and Mike Lam runs the Lagoon Chinese Restaurant. According to Ken, after Lam's Kitchen closes at 4pm daily, he heads over to LCR to help his brother. Lam's Kitchen is a small restaurant that specializes in look fun and noodle dishes; whereas, LCR is larger and has a more extensive Chinese menu typical of a Chinese restaurant. At lunchtime, LCR also offers a small cafeteria-style operation in the front, where you can choose one or two entrees (e.g., kau yuk, green beans, beef broccoli, fried rice) with starch. In addition, LCR offers American breakfasts (eggs, omelets, bacon, ham, sausage, pancakes, egg sandwiches) from 9:00 am to 10:30 am ($1 more per item if ordered after 10:30 am). They also have local plate lunches (bbq chicken, teri steak, garlic shrimp/chicken, chicken katsu, etc.); burgers; and fries. They can also do party pans with advance notice of 5 hours. We tried the beef brisket tendon with choy sum and look fun noodles in soup. Guess what?! It's the same thing at Lam's Kitchen, but with more look fun noodles! Heavenly, as it is one of our favorite dishes. When we inquired with the waitress, she revealed that the soup is actually made at LCR and transported over to Lam's Kitchen and reheated when ordered. She jokingly told us that because of this, it's fresher at LCR, which she has a point. The look fun, though, is made at Lam's Kitchen. We also ordered the minute chicken cake noodle, as there were numerous Yelp photos of this. It was very flavorful! The cake noodles were perfectly made, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. It was a generous serving of boneless sautéed chicken, choy sum, and cake noodles in a tasty oyster-sauce gravy. Condiments included shoyu and mustard on each table, and hot sauce and chili garlic sauce on request. They serve both iced water and hot tea. Menu items are reasonably priced. They accept credit cards with a $5 minimum. Service is quick, and the waitresses are very friendly. They have a large flat-screen TV that can be viewed no matter where you are seating. We enjoyed this clean and bright restaurant, which serves old-school and home-style Cantonese cuisine. They're open Tues. to Sun. from 9:00 am to 8:30 pm; closed on Mondays. Hard to believe that LCR has been around since Jan. 2011, and there was no way we could have noticed it in this industrial area near the airport. LCR adjoins the existing Pacific Marina Inn Hotel, a small motel-looking structure, surrounded by shippers, distributors, and company warehouses. Free parking is available in any of the parking spaces surrounding the hotel, which we had no problems in finding a parking space. We were surprised how crowded the restaurant was during prime lunchtime, as many local workers in the area certainly know about it. Many of the patrons were regulars, as they didn't need a menu to order. We look forward to becoming regulars LCR! Now we don't have to search for parking like we do in Chinatown and know that we can have the same beef brisket tendon with look fun in soup. Plus we can experiment with their varied menu, instead of the limited menu at Lam's Garden. We will continue to patronize both locations depending on where we are at the moment and whether we can easily find a parking space. And how did they name the restaurant? I suspect that because the directions to the restaurant is to turn on Lagoon Drive, and then to Waiwai Loop, a simple name could be used: Lagoon Chinese Restaurant. The food is really tasty and they have a ton of options, including burgers (random!) Top recommendation: beef tendon chow fun. It's sooooo good. It's a little out of the way and they're doing construction on the street, so I would mostly only advise this place if you're going to be nearby. They're located in the parking lot of a motel. Parking is a bit weird because it's a one way drive; you have to drive past the restaurant and go around in order to park, or snag some street parking. They're quick, order ahead about 10-15 minutes and they'll have your food ready to dash in and pick up. All in all, Lagoon is a solid option if you're in the area. This is the sister restaurant to Lam's Kitchen in Chinatown. Both are very similar, with the main difference is Lagoon has a more extensive menu, parking is free, you can park in any space designated for hotel parking. The location is off the beaten path and when you see the restaurant, be sure NOT to go to the driveway that is exit only and one way, go about a few feet further to enter to loop around to the front. Like Lam's, Lagoon's offering of chow fun and beef brisket in soup are excellent. The chow fun noodles are silky smooth and fresh, there is no shortcut for this and day(s) old noodles are difficult to hide/mask. The beef chow fun is fried in a greasy, very hot (gas powered) wok. The beef brisket is soft and tender, the dish includes pieces of chewy tendon, an acquired taste. You can smell and hear the sounds of the wok going in the kitchen when going to your parking space. Prices are still reasonable despite the price increases, all if not most dishes are still under $10. The restaurant is not fancy, don't know why some negative reviews point this out, come on, it's a hole in the wall. Not being from this area, finding the location was easy enough at night but the neighborhood was by the airport and among the warehouses. We order the following: 1. I like this place been coming here a few times a month when im in the area. Its a small hole in the wall, now in the same building as the hotel. With current 2020 street construction just go in the hotel parking lot and walk to the front. I always change it up some times its the special for the day (Everyday they have a special of the day which is the same every week). Everything here has been good, flavorful. Today got the mini local moco. Lots of rice and gravy which helped me eat it all. But I was sad to see how small the burger patty was. Only 1 patty and it was smaller than a mcdonalds burger patty, about 2-3 bites it was all gone and I had more than half the container rice left lol.
