Out of the many Chinese restaurants in the West Covina area, LAN Noodle was one of the only places I could find that serves Lanzhou handpulled noodles. With a sharp craving for some of these noodles, I figured I'd drop by and give this popular restaurant a try.
Coming to dine in on a Sunday evening around 7:45PM, the first thing I noticed is the amount of empty tables there were. Even though half of the restaurant had Asian families eating in, there was no wait and I was seated immediately. Looking at the menu for the first time, there were many items to choose from. But for most people, the Signature Noodle Soup is the section to look for. In addition to choosing the soup, selecting the spiciness and the 8 different noodle shapes makes this one of the most customizable Asian noodle soups . For this experience, I decided to try their LAN Noodle with wide flat noodles and mild spice. This dish was $15 at the time of writing this review.
Looking at the distribution of ingredients, the noodles took up the most space by far at around 80% of the dish. Beef chunks and sliced beef took up about 10%, and the daikon and other garnishes took up the last 10%. Because there is so much noodle in the bowl, one would expect the starch to make most people full. But ironically, the dish was only filling at most. The noodles did not seem to have that much fiber, the pieces of beef were thinly sliced, and there wasn't all that much daikon. For 15 dollars in the West Covina area, the price was on par with a majority of other places you can find. But because the portion was a little less than other noodle soups at this price, the price to portion ratio for this dish was only decent.
The taste of the food was pretty good for the most part. In other words, this dish is great if looking for a fresh tasting soup with fresh ingredients. Otherwise, the flavors lean more neutral. Starting with the broth, the beef flavor is definitely present in the soup. However, the broth tasted like it was filtered and almost tasted like warm water. Stirring in the house-made chili oil gave some more flavor which was appreciated. But by doing so, the soup became more sharp which detracted from the flavor already in the bowl. Moving on to the beef, the texture was softer than I initially thought which made it easy to consume. And with that, the beef was also more lean than I initially thought as well. Only thing I would wish for is larger slices of beef. Of anything I had in the bowl, the noodles were by far the best. Each noodle was soft, but not gooey which made them easy to both bite and swallow. On top of this, the flour used came to the forefront of the taste composition and made the whole dish taste grounded. In all, I would personally order something else with noodles. But at the same time, this dish wasn't bad by any means.
As I was walking out, I noticed a newspaper clipping mentioning that LAN Noodle was named one of LA's top 38 restaurants in 2022. And after trying out their food, I can see why. The price of the food was standard, sure. But the quality of the ingredients was definitely the draw for myself and many of the other families dining in. If I had to recommend a change, I would ask for more flavor in the broth to strengthen the foundation of the dish. But otherwise, I'd argue LAN Noodle deserves a solid 4 out of 5 stars! read more
