I had ordered the chicken and pineapple fried rice from mealpal (previously known as mealpass) but I was dismayed to find out that I received chicken curry fried rice instead. I was looking forward to eating pineapple so I was pretty upset ): The chicken curry fried rice is good if you're a fan of curry rice (unfortunately, I'm not). The portail was also pretty good considering that it is a mealpal deal (mealpal portions are typically a bit small). Service was great. I picked up my lunch super late and had called them beforehand to let them know and they said I could come whenever. I got there and it was closed (per the closed sign and someone standing in front ) but they left the door unlocked so I was able to go in and pick it up. read more

I'm not sure if what I had was Malaysian or Thai or a mixture of both in every bite, but the food was delicious. My friends and I shared the main courses family style and had a bottle of wine all for under $25 a person. Our waitress was attentive and offered great suggestions on the best dishes. Try the Rendang, it's dried curry with very little coconut flavor (for those who don't like coconut). Laut's atmosphere is casual; inviting patrons to linger under their dim lights. I organized a small shindig at Laut on Wednesday night. The reservation was easy, and the tables were ready on time. The food earned an "8 out of 10" from the attendees. The staff were polite and the service was prompt. I guess I just expected the prices to be more down-to-earth. I swear the prices were lower the last time I looked. I like that this place is conveniently located in the Flatiron area, so i don't have to venture all the way to Chinatown to get my Malaysian food. Their roti canai and meehoon goreng are pretty authentic. In fact, i think that their dinner selections come closer to the original tastes than their lunch specials, most of which are modified to suit Americans. (i mean, come on...mango chicken?? that does not exist in Asia.) I heard that this place serves good hainanese chicken rice...but i'm skeptical. (nothing beats the real thing!) She was a doll and had even offered to provide a free dessert after speaking with her about the potential use of online coupon/sales sites such as Groupon, Tenka and kgbdeals. I've been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The sign on the window used to say "Malaysian food," I'm quite sure, but now it just says "LAUT" and there are more Thai and Japanese things on the menu. I started with a fried thin pancake, which I think is Malaysian, by way of India. It came with a nice curry dipping sauce. It was big enough to share, and only a little greasy. We also enjoyed the shrimp spring roll appetizer. For my entree, I got Malaysian mutton curry, which was good. Not a huge portion, but good quality, nice and tender, and medium-hot spice. The pad thai was really tasty, but not remarkable. The place is just fine if you're near Union Square, but no need go out of your way. read more

I was searching for a good malaysian place! I was thrilled to find Laut on Yelp!! My friends and I celebrated chinese new year here and we ordered a lot of dishes to fill our hungry tummies. Roti Canai- the curry was delicious! The Roti wasn't as flaky (which is my personal preference), but still very tasty and fulfilled my roti canai craving!! Chicken satay-- mmmm i loved the peanut sauce! Rice crepe- delicious and highly recommend! Drunk man noodles with chicken-- my tastebuds were super happy with the burst of basil flavor Malaysian curry-- perfect balance of coconut and tomatoes. Bean curd in a clay pot-- this had tofu, shrimp, chicken, and vegetables in a light, but flavorful brown sauce. Bean sprout scallions with salted fish-- Can't go wrong with these veggies!!! Definitely check this place out! It's conveniently located by Union Square, so it's easy to meet up with friends. Still awesome. Got the Roti Canai, Chili crab and Laksa.... Chili Crab & Roti were amazing, Laksa was okay but still very good, especially the noodles. Tasted so fresh! Service was excellent, they run that place like a well oiled machine...and the best part, we didn't even need to wait at all to be seated. I've been to Laut three times for dinner. I like the atmosphere and decor. I'm always craving their soft shell crab curry and Malaysian fried rice. The service was excellent the first two visits. We felt a bit rushed during my last visit even though there were open tables. Despite the last experience, I still recommend Laut and I will be back to try other items on the menu. read more

Dinner review for 2! The food was good, we had the pineapple fried rice which was flavorful but neither too sweet nor too spicy (suggested by server and I recommend this as a nice rice option). Roti canai was ok/ nice! We tried the mango and lychee mojitos - good! I preferred the mango flavor! Not too sweet. We got a free mango rice dessert through a four square check in. Be aware that though the four square check in says free appetizer and dessert, they only give one. I went here because it is on the Michelin bib gourmand list. The food was nice but not exceptional. Imp note: the service was terrible. Our server kept talking over us without listening to our question or explanation in its entirety. They close at 11.00pm but he kept ushering us and others out of the restaurant at 10.30pm. They kept coming over to our table every 2-3 minutes and asking if we were done. I have never had this experience at another restaurant!!! So try it for the food for a low budget Asian fusion option. But I won't go back there! read more

I came here around 4pm on a Saturday with two friends, and we were seated immediately. We each ordered a drink despite the fact that the wines were pretty overpriced, for the quality. The beers were more reasonable. For an appetizer, we got a roti that was stuffed with minced meat and had a curry dipping sauce (I don't remember the name, but it wasn't Roti Canai). It was absolutely delicious -- the best part of the entire meal. My one friend had Char Kueh Teow with shrimp and Chinese sausage, which was very bland. Perhaps if he asked for it spicy, it would have been better? My other friend had the Mee Hoon Goreng, and said that he'd had better. For my entree, I had the green curry. It was good, but nothing special. It's also pretty hard to mess up green curry. All in all, we each had a drink, shared an appetizer, and had one entree. The whole meal including tip came out to about $90. I'm not opposed to paying that much money for Thai/Malaysian cuisine if the food is worth it--like at Pok Pok, for instance. Here, the food was average, and most definitely not worth it. I could order any of those dishes at another restaurant for about half the price, and it'll be just as good. If you're going to come here, stick to their Roti dishes, it's what they do best. read more

My friends and I came here to try Malaysian food for the first time after hearing good things about the roti and curry laksa. We ordered the roti canai, curry laksa, mee goreng, and the nasi lemak. The roti canai was buttery and chewy-- the way I like roti. The dipping sauce, which seemed like a coconut curry, was really good and flavorful. The mee goreng was also really good. It was sweet, savory, so many flavors in one dish. And finally the curry laksa was the highlight of the meal. It was so good and comforting. A little gem near Union Square. Varied Asian cuisine, with plenty of vegetarian options, if you are so inclined (e.g., the veggie dumpling appetizer). i really like this place. I'm not a Malaysian food connoisseur by any means, but the food and flavors are fresh. The prices are moderate (and could definitely be A LOT better)...but that being said, I could seriously live on the clear broth soup with chicken and thin rice noodles. Laut is awesome! Unpretentious and cozy ambience + Awesome authentic well presented food = Happy me. I had my favourite dish - the hainanese chicken rice and it came with all the works (the dark thick soy sauce and the orangish garlic chilly sauce - like it does in singapore) and a few extras like roasted garlic and a chimmichurri-esque garlic cilantro sauce on the side. Came here with two friends for dinner. The Roti Canai is the best!! The sauce is tasty and the roti is the perfect combination of crispy and chewiness. I also tried Asam Laksa for the first time - as my friend noted "the flavors are very complex. Every bite is something different." In other words, it was somehow, spicy, sour, sweet, and extremely savory. Don't forget to add meat. We forgot and so ended up with bowls of tasty flavor and laifun noodles. I chose Laut for lunch because it was close to where my BF worked. He ordered the Bail Fried Rice with chicken and I got the Glass Noodles with beef. The two orders were $10 each for lunch pricing. His Basil Fried Rice was pretty yummy. The chicken pieces were more moist than I thought it'd be and the rice was really flavorful. Scallions were sprinkled all over the top (do NOT like scallions, so this was blech to me). This dish had a really mild, subtle spiciness that you feel slowly. I cannot handle spicy dishes but this one was pretty yummy. My Glass Noodles, however, were kind of disappointing. It was not what I had envisioned at all. The noodles were really, really thin and choppy. There was a decent amount of carrots and mushrooms in the dish which the BF liked. But the biggest con for this dish, to me, was the bean sprouts. There was more bean sprouts in the dish than glass noodles or any of the other veggies. I felt like I paid for a bowl of bean sprouts with some glass noodle shreds sprinkled in. Additionally, this dish is not that flavorful, especially after trying the Basil Fried Rice. The saving grace was the beef. I've had quite a few dishes at other places that had really tough or dry beef, but here it was moist and tender. Maybe if I had tried another dish I would have liked this place better. But I don't think I will be coming back here any time soon. read more

I frequent Laut for their Basil Rice dish on their lunch menu. If you have not had Basil Rice, I recommend it for it's full flavor. Why am I giving three stars? Ownership has clearly stated to the chef that they should skimp on the amount of meat that they put in the dish. I went here after purchasing a groupon and eat from their "groupon menu". I love Malaysian restaurants and this place was great! I had the roti since that's one thing you always have to try. I also had the soft shell chili crab dish and my boyfriend had the salmon. Both were seasoned perfectly and not too spicy but spicy enough. The atmosphere was great and the staff was friendly. This restaurant is great if u want to have different types of Asian food. When I came here it wasn't clear to me if it was Thai, Malay or Indo because they had dishes from all three cuisines. In the end I went with the char kwey teo with beef. It was actually a lot better than what I was expecting but I'd prefer to go somewhere else if I was in the area given the prices and the fact that the east village is walkable. Satay peanut sauce was much too rich and creamy to be authentic. Roti canai/prata also lacked flavour. Next time, I might try the char kway teow to see if it's any better. Also - what's up with the Thai dishes on the menu? What a turn off. Overall, straight 3/5 fare. This is one of my favourite restaurants in NY. The roti channai is delicious, the sauce to dip the roti in is divine and is so flavoursome. I always get the pad thai when I come here and I'm not lying when I say this is the best pad thai I've ever had. I clean up my bowl everytime! Ok ok...so the music is a bit random (dance music and the latest pop offerings), the tables are seated a bit too close together for my liking and the tiled walls may make it look a bit like a bathroom but the service is quick and the staff are always pleasant. I'd say it comes to about $30 for 2 people and no alcohol. One thing though, don't go in the high heat of NY summer as there's no air conditioning. We found this out the hard way, with sweat dripping down our faces while we ate the spicy dishes. I use this place as my date spot, when I want to impress someone with amazing food! It's casual so no need to dress up, the food is fab and it's certainly deserving of it's Michelin star...especially for these reasonable prices! read more

I'm not often in the Flatiron district, so when my friend chose Laut as a dinner spot for a big group of us I was skeptical. Surely it would be overpriced thai food that I could easily have gotten for much cheaper in Hell's Kitchen. To my surprise, however, it wasn't! Well... you can get the more expensive entrees if you want, but we stuck with some good ol' fashioned noodle, curry, and soup dishes. I got the Tom Yam soup with flat broad noodles (so happy I got to choose my own noodles!) and it was delicious. Only $11, but then I added tofu and they charged me an extra $2 (a little annoying). Huge portion! My friends got Red Curry with tofu (said it was good), pad see ew, drunk man noodles, ginger fried rice, and a couple of other things I can't remember. Everyone licked their plates clean. Drinks were also OK. I got a lychee martini which was delicious although a little more expensive than I like to pay ($10... I'm cheap). Beer was all $7 which seemed definitely too high to me. Overall, I'd go again if I somehow stumbled into the neighborhood. It was good for a larger group of 7 and they took reservations. Really 4.5 stars. This place is great. The chili sauce stir-fry was amazing. I asked for it extra spicy with light oil and they really did make it extra spicy with light oil. I ate every.last.bite. of the dish and wish I had more! It's not five stars because the portions could be bigger and when we ordered additional rice it was $2.50/bowl! That is pretty steep. Ordered Prawn Noodles and chicken rice of which the chicken meat came roasted instead of steamed (default for chicken rice in Asia is usually steamed, they'll give you roasted only when you ask for it). Taste-wise, it's meh-ok. Same goes for the prawn noodles. They aren't the best I have tasted but they do give you the necessary "kick" if you happen to be craving for these dishes. Went here for my birthday dinner with my girlfriend. Got the Roti canai appetizer, Chili Crab for my entree, and see got the Mixed Veggies Entree with Tofu. The Roti Canai was a bit underwhelming, but maybe I am biased since I eat Indian roti all too frequently. To me, I could have asked for some flatbread as a side dish and dipped it in a coconut-based curry or soup with the same result. As a big fan of crab and spicy food, I was immediately drawn to the Chilli Crab. The waiter recommended, so I couldn't refuse. To be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed. it was a lot of crab, which is a huge plus, but the sauce was a little too sweet and flavorless to me. It tasted a bit like the sauce that comes with crab rangoon at Chinese restaurants. The first few bites were good, but my palate tired quickly. Mixed Veggies Entree with Tofu- I didn't try much of this, but the brocolli was amazing. Not sure what it was seasoned or cooked with, but I kept asking for more. And I usually hate brocolli... Overall, 3.5-4 stars- in terms of a Thai/Malaysian/Fusion restaurant, it definitely has some more unique dishes than other places in the area (Murray Hill nearby is PACKED with good Thai restaurants with identical menus). In addition, the feel is unique (painted walls and hole-in-the-wall, yet classy feel), and it was for my birthday so I had a good time. Since I have already tried it once now, I would most likely go somewhere else in the area, but would be open to returning to sample some of the other dishes on the menu (I hear the Drunken Man Noodle is amazing). read more

I love Thai food, but this was my first experience with Malaysian/Singaporean. Seems very similar, so needless to say I love it too :-) One thing I was a BIG fan of, is their use of OKRA in some of the dishes!
