3.5 stars. Drew M. met me for lunch on my birthday and we had planned to go over to Blaze for their free pizza. Unfortunately, it being a college area, the line was out the door, down the block and curled into the lot. So we went to Le Diplomate Cafe instead. The wait was a lot shorter but the food is still made to order. It was such a nice day that we decided to eat outdoors. Lunch time around this plaza can be really busy since students and professionals alike will flock here for food options. I ordered the Vietnamese banh mi special with pate. Now considering how far away from Little Saigon we were, I had to try it. It was ok. There were an abundance of filling but the taste wasn't there. There was something missing. The price point was also pricier than what you'd find in Little Saigon too. I didn't like the bread since it attacked my mouth but it was definitely better than Lee's Sandwiches. There weren't enough of the special meats that are supposed to be on a Vietnamese special sandwich. At least there was daikon, carrots, and cilantro. I didn't taste any jalapeno but they did give us little tubs of sriracha. I tried Drew's sandwich which was roast beef and brie and it was nothing short of spectacular. I have finally succumbed to the ravings of how good this place is. I need to be craving sandwiches to eat it and one day I was, hence I came to Le Diplomate Cafe. Like some of the smaller eateries around UCI Town center, Le Diplomate has been here for over a decade and closer to two decades!! Just as long as Ray's Pizza!! Anyway, there was a time when the Irvine company attempted to force Le Dip out by raising the lease on the space. However, the Irvine company could not have for seen the HUGE amount of people who rely on and love Le Diplomate. There was a massive amount of support for Le Dip in they way of a very large campaign of signatures on a petition to keep Le Diplomate around. Since then, the store has maintained a steady presence in the center and I'm super grateful that they're still around. I came in today and I ordered a Turkey club supreme. Believe it or not, I never step foot at Le Diplomate in all my years at UCI. I heard raves and reviews over the chicken garlic sandwich but never brought myself to come here. Alas, an opportunity brought me back to my old stomping grounds and I made sure to make the walk over. The guy working the register was serving up some real sass and I loved it! I am only reviewing their breads and pastries - mainly the french bread and the various croissants which I have been buying for years. On this trip, it was just several great butter croissants and one almond croissants. I didn't buy the long slim baguettes this time. I've often seen these little baguettes labelled as "batards", or in English translated as "bastard" though I don't know why. Once in French speaking Montreal, Canada I asked if they had any "batard", the counter guy said with a straight face, "the tempermental baker is not in yet LOL". Whenever I make roast chicken or come home from visiting my parents, I always have extra meat that I freeze and defrost when I have great croissants or really good bread to make sandwiches. And Le Diplomate croissants are really good, especially if you heat them in the regular oven on low heat for about 10 minutes. It comes out crispy and releases the butter smell and flavor. Same is true with their almond croissant. I loved the almond croissant. I took a bite before staring my car. It was sweet and loaded with almond paste and almond pieces. It was so good I couldn't wait to get it home. So I stopped at a fast food joint to get coffee with it. Sure was a great pick me up driving home. Over the years, I've also loved their brewed coffee but have never had their sandwhiches. While I was in line, a couple had some kind of chicken sandwich piled with lettuce and tomato that looked pretty good. Someone else had the a breakfast sandwhich that smelled great also. My FAV mum&pop cafe shop in Irvine! I've been coming to LeDip for OVER a decade. A few weeks ago, I forced my boyfriend to go to the beach with me. He agreed as long as he could pick where we went to lunch. I was not happy. Not only am I a control freak, I'm picky with my foods. When he told me he was taking me to a sandwich shop by his school I was straight up worried. And when I asked where we were going, the only response I got was "the Dip", which sounded like somewhere people go to die, not eat....so I was preparing to stop at Del Taco for real food after our "sandwiches." The "garlic sauce" didn't have a hint of garlic or flavor of any kind and was oddly gelatinous. Overall the sandwich was just weird to me. We also got a cold Italian sandwich to mix things up. It was ok. The bread is decent. It was odd that the only meat on the sandwich was salami but it was all right. I came after my dinner reception only to share a sandwich because I heard this is the place to go for sandwiches if you're an anteater. We got the garlic chicken sandwich and the first thing I noticed was how thin it was. So I opened it...and please see my photo to see what I found inside. So pathetic. Arguably, the best sandwich place in all of Irvine, if not all of South OC. Le Diplomate is exceptional in every freaking way. THE SITUATION This place is right across UC Irvine and is a small family owned sandwich shop. I remember coming here quite a lot when I was attending UCI and it was always a treat. A few years before I graduated, a Lee's Sandwich opened in the same plaza and there was much talk about how Le Diplomate might go out of business to the cheaper, trendier Lee's. NOPE! This place actually does better! FOOD: 5 stars There are no words that can describe the flavors to these sandwiches...but I'll try. They have this amazing garlic sauce they use for their bread. It is simply amazing, unique, and irreplaceable as far as I'm concerned. If you're having a non-Vietnamese sandwich here, you have to get garlic sauce inside it. It makes the sandwich 10x better. The sandwiches I usually get are the chicken mushroom broccoli or the chicken bacon club. Both are smothered with delicious melty cheese (provolone or Swiss I believe) and the fantastic garlic sauce (although you have the option for ranch sauce instead, but that's a waste). And the bread they use is incredibly fresh. Like, incredibly fantastically wonderfully astoundingly awesomely fresh. They bake their own bread and when you get fresh ingredients, their unique garlic sauce, and fresh French bread all melded into one hot, dripping-with-flavor sandwich, there is destruction to be had. Every bite I ever took was a burst of flavor, a punch to the face. The sandwich was kicking ass and taking names. I could see the faces around me arrange itself into pure bliss as they took bites out of their mana. I think I saw the light once. Trust me when I say this, this sandwich is a game changer. If you ever want to know what a flavor packed sandwich is, this is the place to get it. SMOOTHIES: 5 stars I have to give a special shout out to the smoothies. OMG their chicken broccoli. AMAZING. Great idea of banh mi with western twist to it. My friend took me here and told me they had amazing sandwich. I'm not a big fan of sandwiches so was thinking to myself how great can a sandwich be..BUT YES, the famous chicken broccoli with garlic sauce. It is so flavorful and creamy but at the same time the bread is still crispy and soft in the inside. Great comfort food, feels like you are eating a sandwich (which you are lol ) with a cup of soup that warms everything up. My wife bought a pair of sandwiches from Le Diplomate, one Chicken Cordon Bleu and a Vietnamese sandwich. I was impressed with the sandwiches she brought home. Days later, I went to visit this shop in person since I was in the area. Their Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich won me over the first time. So I was looking forward for a repeat experience, but this time in trying the popular Garlic Chicken. They were having a happy hour special for that sandwich only from 3-6pm. and it was perfect timing. The deal is, for $5.99 you get the sandwich in 9" size. Included is a bag of chips and small drink. Their Garlic Chicken has diced meat with melted Swiss cheese. It's similar to the Cordon Bleu just minus the ham. What makes these sandwiches tasty with flavor is the savory garlic sauce. Also, I like their baguette it's toasted and flatten which is easier to eat. Friendly service here. In the happy hour deal instead of small soda, for an extra charge I was able to replace it for a small size Vietnamese iced coffee. The coffee wasn't the best. The bread is crunchy and FRESH, so tasty, but it doesn't damage the roof of your mouth. The garlic sauce is so tasty and a perfect combination. This place has been around forever and it's still just as good as I remember. It's fresh, tasty, and very reasonably priced. My go-to sandwich is the chicken, broccoli, and mushroom with garlic sauce. It's $6.75 for a 9-inch, and it makes a perfect lunch for one person. I've also tried the chicken cordon bleu ($6.99), which tastes great as well. Overall, a very good meal option if you find yourself at the University Town Center right across from UCI. Very few seats inside, but plenty outside. Fyi, if you use the buy one combo get one 50% off coupon in the Explore OC coupon book, it's get one combo 50% off not get one sandwich 50% off. Also, they make you pay in cash since you're using a coupon. I don't find that very appropriate, but oh well. By the way, soda refills are free now. Place is a little small to eat in and stuffy but there are plenty of areas to eat and sit outside. I love the outdoor seating we ordered the chicken broccoli mushroom sandwich and another sandwich to try. It was filling and tasted great. I swear their garlic sauce made the sandwich 10 times better even though It was very garlic-y. I didn't expect it to be so pungent but it did hit the spot. Their garlic sauce reminded me of Zankou garlic sauce but more creamier. I Will definitely come back to try out more sandwiches. Went here b/c of the high rating and I think it is a solid 4. Place is more small and not busy. It took some time to get food as it's hard to known when it's done but the sandwiches are pretty cheap. These sandwiches are pretty bomb! I was lucky enough to try Le Dip when my friend took me there as a quick lunch back in freshman year. It was really delicious. I think I tried the chicken, broccoli and mushroom sandwich because he recommended it to me and I from the first bite, I could tell why everybody liked it so much. I also had a program at VDC where we had free Le Dip sandwiches! I tried the Garlic Chicken and even had the extra garlic sauce. It was really really good. And then there was the Campus Cred deal ... I really want to try the tuna, but right now, I have to say that the Garlic Chicken is my favorite. It's creamy and delicious with just the right amount of sauce and chicken. But after eating it, I usually feel super full and weighted down. Perhaps because of the heavy and tasty sauce - but it's so good that I can't help but eating it! This is one of the favorite shops at UTC, and can usually get quite crowded around lunchtime on the weekdays. Garlic Sauce. Every sandwich that I get here MUST have garlic sauce. It makes the sandwich. My top two picks are the chicken dijon (chicken, artichoke, garlic sauce, dijon mustard) and the chicken broccoli mushroom (as the name states + garlic sauce). A sandwich drenched in garlic sauce topped with the sort of sriracha hot sauce that you can get on the counter.. magical. If I dine in the UTC area, this is my go to place. Great food, great service, affordable prices, and lots of seating outdoors. It can get a little bit crazy during the rush hours of lunch, but the wait is reasonable. Only downside is that you may smell like garlic for the rest of the day.. Still worth it! read more

I overslept for brunch on saturday so I went to le dip with some people in my hall for lunch. The place was relatively empty (as is all of the UTC during the weekend) and got a chicken garlic. I was somewhat disappointed because I had amazing high hopes from reading the reviews, but it was still pretty good in retrospect. The bread was very crunchy on the outside and the inside was very soft and buttery. Very garlicy and delicious and moist with the mayo they put in it //garlic sauce. mmm. the only complaint i have is the chicken was dry on a few of the larger chunks, but other than that it was pretty good. next time i need to try the broc/mush/chick with extra garlic it'll def have more to it read more

I really don't know how you could make a better sandwhich, other than increase the size, while decreasing calories... only in our dreams right? The french baguette sandwhich has been influential to the vietnamese culture, and Banh Mi was born... however you won't find your traditional vietnamese ingredients (like head cheese, bbq pork, grilled chicken, and other exotic meats) at this establishment...what you will find is a lot of the american and french influence still in tact. My favorite sandwhich is the chicken club w/ garlic sauce. The garlic sauce is like crack... its so delicious and addicting! Almost all "cream" type sandwhiches offer it, so choose it when you can! The bread is well baked, but not overly crisp/hard like Lee's... and the inside ingredients are well cooked, warm, and amazingly tasty. The chicken is far from dry, even though its white meat! Spread some Sricacha on it, and you are Golden. Sandwhich sizes are 5" or 9", and they have combo prices too, which include a drink and chips. This place locatedin the University Town Center, and you will wait 5-15 for a sandwhich M-F between 12-2pm... UCI students LOVE this place... and so do their alumni. read more

Chicken, broccoli, and mushroom sandwich with garlic mayo was my favorite. I use to get this at least twice a week when attending UCI. The chicken they use is kinda dry though. Maybe they could think about using different part of the chicken that is juicier and more tender. Everything else could stay the same. read more

If you're ever in the area, you gotta try these sandwiches; fresh ingredients, basically delivery vehicles for their AMAZING garlic mayo!
