Located on 3rd floor of the Shops at Houston Center, this place is my go to healthy option for work day lunches. Their ingredients are fresh and the flavor combinations are great. There are no bad choices on the menu, but my personal favorite is the Alamo. Their service is pretty quick, but there is normally a line during lunch hour. You can order ahead on their website to save you some time.

My favorite spot for a salad bowl! It is located downtown in The Park Shops, so it's easily accessible from the tunnel. What makes Leaf & Grain stand out is the consistent quality - it is delicious every time. My usual order is the MFH Veggie Boost, which comes with shredded kale, roasted sweet potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, roasted broccoli, parmesan, roasted pepitas, and dried cranberries, and it's served with the citrus vinaigrette. The only modification I typically make is adding chicken, but other than that it's perfect exactly as it comes. I have also tried adding the falafel which is good as well. They do a great job at giving a good amount of toppings vs. just filling the bowl with kale/the base and having a few things sprinkled on top. If you're making your own, the roasted sweet potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and dried cranberries are especially good. I highly recommend coming by the next time you're looking for a high quality salad!

I really like Leaf & Grain, but our office ordered their sandwich box lunches and their Turkey sandwich literally had one slice of Turkey. Come on, L & G...I'm sure at $15 per box, you can afford to put in another slice. 5x more bread than meat. Disappointed.

No, thank you for your service, bag

You can't compare this joint to a Salata and avoid insulting Salata - the food quality and customer service experience here beats every Salata ever from every single location they ever have had and ever will have. That's why there is such a line here! Nobody goes to Salata on the third floor of the Park Shops with this as an option on the fourth floor. The 44 Farms Steak Salad caught my eye on the menu long ago (Eric C.'s four star review mentions steak added to a bowl which made me look further into the menu) but the line shooting out the door into the Park Shops scared me off, until finally the one day a week I get to have lunch away from my desk coincided with a day it was pouring outside so I was limited to tunnel or skybridge accessibles - and this fit the bill with a salad type experience, since my suit was starting to feel a bit tight around the tequila protector regions, but I still wanted steak flavours to season and moisten the rabbit food part of the salad. I had a long time wait in line since the line had wrapped along the wall and out the front of the store when I briskly sashayed over and joined it. So with my time in line I thought about other options on the menu besides the 44 Farms Steak Salad. Charging 75 cents extra for blue cheese as an add on to a Cobb salad that is already $10.25 sans blue cheese? Thank u, next. The steak salad meanwhile came with blue cheese, one of the many fine cheeses the gentlesir favours in his soyboy salads apart from the Armenian string cheese only available at the Phoenicia salad bar. Elisa was sweet once it was finally my time to shine/order. I had been there at the head of the line for a few minutes already while everyone else was busy making other bowls or whatev. She changed her gloves and swooped in to make the magick happen. Sweet and polite always goes a long way in lunch counter service, especially determining which ones you would visit again like this one, and which one you still have a grudge against twelve years on like Doozo. While you can customize salad/bowls as you see fit, they also have the pre-set ones like the Cobb and the steak salad. They also recommend the light or the medium portion of salad dressing you can request, and they only break down calorie count on the pre-set menu items with either light or medium dose of sauce. I went with the medium dose of the horseradish vinaigrette because most of the fellas in front of me had gone for medium, so they must have known something I did not. The medium saucing turned out to be just right to coat the salad but not leaving behind a ton of residue once you completed the salad. Pros: large helping of steak in the 44 Farms steak salad, the steak is beautiful, quality ingredients, and made with love when Elisa makes your salad. Cons: line out the door, line moves slow, why are we still waiting for a salad when I could be eating a quickly obtained fast food hamberder whilst watching Rick & Morty already??? Salads can be nice, right? A nice salad like this used to be $15 at Georgia's before that turned into the Local Foods, but the line was much less at Georgia's (and hence probably why it turned into the Local Foods) but I am not a patient person and I notoriously do not wait very well. Some reviews say the line moves quick and that is a matter of opinion, from the part of the line starting INSIDE the store it was round 15 minutes left until leaving time with the salad tucked into the tender crook of your elbow - or 0.3 as lawyers and Thai ladyboys in motels out by the airport who both bill in six minute increments are more familiar with in timekeeping. For an $11+ salad with tax this still merits repeat visits on days when (a) the line is not as #extra as it can be sometimes dramatically spilling out the storefront onto the fourth floor of the Park Shops and (b) the weather vs suede shoes conundrum has limited you to skybridge/tunnel accessibles.

Much better than Salata. Prob, the best salad place bowl place ever. I usually don't get salad but out of all the healthy salad places, this place is my favorite. Also, it gets you to be really full. I loved both of items that I got. Get the one with hummus, I think it just makes the salad way more enjoyable. I think this is the only time I couldn't finish a salad and was able to save it for later. Follow me on Instagram @willeatfood

The ambiance as soon as you walk in is welcoming, inviting, and intimate. Even if you dine outside, you are sure to feel cozy like a meal in your own home. The hostess always makes you feel invited. Any waiter we have had here has given GREAT recommendations so it helps us break free of ordering the same thing over and over. We have never had a single day of bad service here so we have become regulars anytime we travel into the inner loop of Houston for business or fun. The flavors? My goodness the flavor here in every dish truly speaks to whoever is cooking these incredible dishes! We've even wanted to ask what we can do to even get our dishes at home this amazing! The Jupiter breakfast was $21 & the GF French toast was about $12 with $4 fruit cup. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my GF French toast. The mock-tail mule was nothing special for $9 of juice :/. In total we spent $58 which is a lot in our opinion. By all means it's not a bad spot and I'm sure other things you are good, but this was just our experience with what we got. It's been about a decade since my last review of Govinda's shortly after they first opened so it's…read morehigh time that I finally update that review after being a repeat customer over that time. Lots of things changed but Govinda's largely stayed the same. The decor hasn't changed but there is some wear and tear on the walls. Still clean, food still reliably good and has the homemade taste. They change up the menu daily and now they have 3 all vegan menu days to the week: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Plus, weekdays have a themed specials that aren't necessarily Indian. They post their menus online but weekday menus are posted the day of on their menu Instagram "ghmenu". Weekend menus are typically posted on Thursday. They are still a buffet so service is minimal but it is pretty good but no frills. Unfortunately, they got rid of their salted lassi years ago so they only have mango lassi now along with mint lemonade for cold drinks. Price has gone up as well to around $18 (a little more for holidays and weekends) per person but that's to be expected. Carry out is $16.95 per meal (large take out container plus a soup, roti, salad, papadam, and dessert). You can opt of out of items but you'll still pay the same price. In the past decade, I still love their food but I can no longer eat as much to make it worth it to dine in so we've been getting take out (we took a brief break from buffets but I missed them so we went the take out route). One take out meal lasts me 2 meals at home so it's a no brainer (husband finishes the take out container in one sitting though). Plus, I have kids now and they definitely aren't good eaters so it didn't make sense for them to eat in. Over the last few months in Houston, we typically go once every 2-3 weeks because my picky kids absolutely love their saag paneer. I got them al a carte saag paneer ($10 for a half container, $5 for a half container of rice, $7 for a small container of an entree) until someone there suggested I just order an entree because it's the same price but you get more. And their plastic containers are limited. I started doing it but then one day, the main guy (manager?) wasn't happy since the big container was just rice, saag paneer, and maybe a little bit of dal makhani. I was a little miffed because if we ate in and all they ate was saag paneer, it would be okay. That aside, I noticed someone mentioned food allergies. The reason why I order Al a carte and segregate their take out container is because my youngest is allergic to wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, avocado, pineapple, and kiwi. Their food is usually labeled but I like asking to be sure. On days they serve something that contains nuts, we just don't go (unless it's only in the dessert). My kids usually like the same things and we only go on non-vegan days. The general consensus is vegan days' food tends to be spicier. My youngest is okay with spice, but my eldest who is super picky won't eat it if it's too spicy. Plus, I love their makai kofta. If I'm in town and I see they have makai kofta, we are THERE. However, I noticed that their menu isn't always set in stone. One day, they didn't have my favorites but we went because I didn't want to cook and THEY HAD MALAI KOFTA. I was so pleased. If you love potatoes, their batada vada is divine (but moderately spicy). I also enjoy the BBQ tofu but they usually only offer it on vegan days so I haven't had it in a long while. They have special menus on holidays but they're vegan so I have unfortunately never tried any holiday menus. We moved but when I'm in town, we make sure to drive up north to eat here at least once. We absolutely miss Govinda's and my kids ask for their beloved saag paneer even when we're not in Houston. I should ask if they can part with the recipe! Haha.... We ordered catering in 2024 for my eldest's birthday! Even the non-vegetarians enjoyed it and you get a lot of food for less than $500. You choose from certain dishes but it still covered many of my Govinda favorites, if not all. Honestly, we'd do it again just for fun with close friends and family and have leftovers for at least a week after splitting it up with everyone. Price has probably increased though.

The grounds of the temple is well manicured and neat with flowers. A big red sign read, "Govinda" was positioned so that I wouldn't miss it. As soon as I walked in at lunch time, the restaurant was damn near empty with only two families. The host immediately sat me at a table front of the buffet line. There was a strong lingering smell of pine-sol and Mr. Clean in the air. Of course, that indication told me that the restaurant was clean. The items on the buffet line was plenty, but limited. I got the rice, tofu curry, chaat marsala, and some vegetables. Everything except for the chaat was bland. It wasn't very easy to eat while the smell of cleaning supplies was in the air. It reminded me of sitting in a bucket of cleaning chemicals while eating a meal. The tofu curry tasted only like turmeric, but no salt or pepper or anything. The rice was super bland. The chaat marsala was very tasty and well seasoned. I finished off with desserts which both options were tasty. I hope to return to try their holiday menu, but I think today was a bad day for the cooks.

The parking situation wasn't great -- mostly street parking, and it felt pretty hectic. The restaurant itself is quaint but small, so it gets crowded and loud inside. We had a patio reservation and were seated in the covered patio, which ended up being perfect since it was freezing outside and much quieter than the main dining room. For food and drinks, I ordered a nonalcoholic spritz, which was really refreshing. We shared a pizza that was pretty good, and I ordered the black pepper and parmesan spaghetti. It was okay -- not bad, but nothing too memorable. Overall, we enjoyed our food, and our waiter was very nice and attentive. I'd recommend trying it out and definitely making a reservation.

Considering the casual upscale nature of the restaurant, we expected a bit more attention to the table in terms of checking in order additional dishes / drinks. The tables were also quite small and our table in particular was a bit uncomfortable to dine at. Food wise, we were impressed with everything but their pizza's. Their appetizers were solid, both pasta dishes were delicious, and flavor and portions were solid. Their pizza style is a thicker crust style and we weren't a fan of the duck pizza at all, and their pepperoni based pizza was fine. Not the biggest fan of their dough or crust. Their cavatelli was delicious!

Upon arriving, every table was taken except our table w a reserved sign on it. The restaurant was bustling, but I could still hear my husband over the music and noise. The menu is huge!!! I didn't know where to start. But our server, Vanessa, helped us make a few choices. We started off w bánh xèo tostadas, bánh béo, & carpaccio. Then we had calamari and their steak special. I asked for a side of papaya slaw for some veggies. My favorite dish of the night was the carpaccio. So many flavors perfectly melded together. Loved the crunch of the fried onions and peanuts. 10/10 dish, in my opinion. Authentic banh xèo usually has an airier, crisp crepe, but theirs was more crunchy - great for their tostada take. Very flavorful. Each piece had one shrimp, but plenty of pork belly bites. The nuoc mam drizzled on it was tasty. Fried calamari - this is a big dish for, I believe, $'19. I prefer the dipping sauce on the side so that the batter doesn't get soggy. This did happen here, but it didn't stop us from finishing every last bite. The green sauce was good, not the usual dipping sauce for fried calamari. Steak special - they have another steak dish on their menu, but this one was pepper crusted w smashed potatoes. The potatoes were super crispy and flavorful and the steak was perfectly cooked - a beautiful pink medium rare. The portion was huge and justified the $39 price point. The staple steak dish came with a papaya slaw and I had to have it. It was bright and limey - I can see why they serve it with their steak. Bánh beo - my least favorite of the night. A bit thicker than I like. Still good, but there were a lot of other great dishes that I could easily pass on this one. Try their hibiscus artichoke tea.

We got there 15 minutes before to make sure we could find parking. They have a small lot but all the spaces were taken despite being before 6 pm on a weekday. And a few spots had noticeable broken glass so be careful. We fortunately found street parking close by; double checked the signs because I ain't getting towed for nothing. Then I double checked inside with staff to make sure where I parked was ok. On to the food: we got several happy hour appetizer items: soy garlic wings, Brussels sprouts, bao bun, roasted oysters. All was good but not amazing. I then ordered the pho tai chinh for myself - I was quite impressed with the portions and the price! Wifey got the lemongrass pork banh mi - good but not amazing. Overall I would say the food taste and portions were good, but note this is elevated Asian cuisine, so it'll run you $20-$30 minimum. Now the service - definitely super friendly staff. It was our first time there so maybe they brought out the extra friendliness. Even the chef came out and greeted us to make sure we liked the food. Waitress was very kind and checked on our table a LOT. Almost too much. Overall a good experience, yummy food, not a fan of the parking (a common problem in the Heights), and expensive for Asian food but that's expected. Enjoy!
