When I lived in Chicago, I used to go to Lee Wing Wah about every 3 weeks. Best Orange Chicken I have had so far. Empress chicken rocks too. Service is a bit slow (hence 4 stars), but heck, with all the Chinese families packing the joint I can't blame them. Seeing so many families dine there is what attracted us to that place. The bad: We had a pretty big wait and bitchy servers for sure. And the use MSG, but I've grown up with MSG in cooking that my family has done so it's really no skin off my back. The good: Cheap for SO much food. I went with three of my friends and we each ordered at least three items. We paid less than $80. I tried everything and was not terribly disappointed in it. This place had the best fried rice I have EVER had. Their "authentic" Chinese dishes were DELICIOUS... but some of their american-chinese dishes were way below par. Like their General Tso's Chicken. Aside from finding 2 random interesting crunchy bits this was delicious. The chicken fried rice was loaded with chicken chunks and had good flavor. Portions were plentiful! Why is this place always packed and packed with older Chinese tables? You would expect this to be a sign that it's awsome, but i was so disappointed! First their system of the waiting list and seating people is not effective. We arrived here with no tables available and no one else waiting for a table. We told the nearest person that we were waiting for a table and our name. Within the next 5 minutes, tons of ppl showed up. and this place doesn't take reservations but somehow managed to get tables before us even with the same number of ppl in their party. so instead of a 2-3 minute wait, we waited 15+. grr We tried the black bean clams which was really good- but it's kind of hard to mess this one up. clams, black bean sauce, onions, and garlic sauteed in a wok. i'm glad they didnt mess this one up or else we would have had nothing to eat. tried the salt and pepper pork, which they should have called salt and pepper pork fat because all of the pieces of pork was 90% fat. and the breading on it was really heavy also. we ended up throwing this dish away. we also tried a tofu veggie dish that was just ok. service was not up to par with usual asian joints, which is already not much.... we were repeatedly ignored when trying to ask for more rice or water, etc. and still cant get over that we were snubbed trying to get a table. we even spoke to them in chinese! i will not be back here. every time i walk past this place, i still get upset that we wasted 30 bucks on such a worthless meal.... read more

Not what I was hoping for when we stopped by this place. There was nothing special about the food and our servant wasn't exactly thrilled to be working on a Sunday. Egg rolls seemed like they only had cabbage in them. My sisters did enjoy sesamie chicken and I did like the sauce in Kung pao chicken. Pretty reasonable prices, we paid $50 for dinner for 4. We were a group of six and surprisingly got seated very quickly for Christmas Day dinner. While most other restaurants had long waits, this one did not. That should have been our first clue. Second clue was only giving us 2 menus for 6 adults. We asked for more menus but never got them. The restaurant itself is too bright inside, there is no ambiance. There was also no dedicated server for each table. We placed our orders and after waiting for 1.5 hours we were still waiting for 4/6 entrees and one of the appetizers! We kept asking where our potstickers were and two tables that were seated an hour after us were being served potstickers. Orders would come out and the servers wouldn't know what table they were supposed to go to only to return to the kitchen. Nothing came in an orderly fashion, just when they felt like bringing it out I guess. They brought out our crab Rangoon and we asked repeatedly for sweet and sour sauce to no avail. Same with the egg rolls so we ended up eating them plain. I ordered the mapo tofu as I love the red bean sauce flavor and spice. I have no idea what was wrong with this dish but there was absolutely no red bean paste in what they served me. It was chunks of tofu in a brown gelatinous soupy gravy served in a glass pie dish. Disgusting. After the 5th time asking for the rest of our order and seeing other tables getting the same dishes we ordered 1.5 hours earlier, we got up and left still hungry. My family had lunch with a friend and his family who frequents this restaurant. We let him and his wife select all of the food. We had appetizers of fried soft tofu and deep fried mini fish which I came to find out they were smelt. Lunch consisted of noddles with tofu, orange chicken, combination fried rice, and beef tips. The food was tasty and I was full at the end of our meal but unfortunately the kids wouldn't eat anything. The one thing that I found out is the fried rice was "authentic" unlike the one we get at our neighborhood restaurant. That dish was my favorite part of the meal. November 20 This place reside in one of my best childhood memories! I used to invite my American friend here for lunch and I still do! I'm a big noodle fan! Therefore, I come here myself for their authentic lunch special a lot! It's either Seafood Wide Rice Noodle (Chow Fun) or the Beef Stew Wide Rice Noodle (Chow Fun). If it's with American groups, I usually get items similar to items similar to the American style, but with an authentic twist. I'll get the Special Yang Chow Fried Rice, Beijing Style Sweet and Sour Pork Chops, Salt and Pepper Shrimp (sometimes I request without the shell on), Beef Wide Rice Noodle, Season Vegetable, and perhaps a Seafood Combination! Sometimes, a soup as well! Overall, this place is extremely affordable and delicious during lunch! If you want the set menu and do not want the headache of deciding, it's yummy as well! read more

This is a very mixed review!! Seriously did not know how to rate our meal! The service was just fine. Typical of a Chinese restaurant. The drinks were fine. I had a decent MaiTai. They had Heineken. The worst place I ever ate in Chinatown. My boyfriend and I asked a lunch special which was given to us with annoyance no smile, no thank you no nothing after the meal. I had one of the worst customer service experiences of my life here. I ordered a vegetarian dish and it came to me with shredded beef and pork in it. When I brought this to my server's attention, she actually argued with me about what I'd ordered, and insisted I point to what I wanted on the menu because she was positive that the description included meat in it. After she finally agreed to bring me what I ordered, it took over 30 minutes to arrive and everyone in my party had already finished eating. If the food had been good, I would probably be able to forgive this bad service. It was, however, unflavorful and extremely greasy, and the restaurant has zero ambiance, so there's no way for me to justify giving this restaurant more than one star. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the Chinatown Square. My boyfriend and I end up here whenever we're craving Chinese food, which is often enough that the servers and owners recognize and greet us like family. The food is consistently delicious, the portions are generous, and the menu is reasonably priced for what you're getting. We usually get an order of spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken, shrimp fried rice, and a couple bubble teas. We will continue to come back and recommend it to our friends! read more

This food is awesome! every time i go i get the sweet and sour chicken. The first time i went i had no idea how large the portions were. Me and a group of friends all shared it. The first time i went, we sat down and there was really only one other group in there and people started slowly coming in. Nice service that time. The second time was packed though! It was a nice summer day and everyone flooded this restaurant. still got our food and drinks in a timely manner but as soon as we asked for to-go boxes we were sorta rushed out. Picking a restaurant in Chinatown can be daunting. We stumbled in here one night after all other places had a wait. It did not look inviting and I was not expecting much but it turned out to be very good. It does seem dirty and it is nothing to look at but if you can get past that, the food is pretty good. The pork fried rice is good and they are not stingy with the ingredients. I loved the kung pao chicken! We were a large party so ordered a variety of dishes to share and most of them did not disappoint. Try a smoothie for dessert, you won't regret it! read more

Went to this place on Christmas eve. There a lot of people are waiting. So I talked to the lady about waiting for the table(I dont know if she is a host or owner). She said it will be 45 mins wait and she asked me how many people we have and she said she will put us on the waiting list. 1 hour later, when I saw the group have same amount people and which is came in after us been sit at the table, so I start to looking for the lady I talked to. She told me is my turn yet and she run away and she never came back to me. After I waited for another 15 mins I found another girl who seems like a host, She checked the list for me, Then I found it out, the Lady that I talked to, she never put us on the list!!!!!!! Very horrible service, I went out for a coffee run to my local Starbucks with my niece. I decided I wanted something light to eat first and hopefully we could find a lunch special close by, we decided to go to Lee Wing Wah. Upon entering, I wasn't greeted only asked if we were dining in or take out. I asked for the lunch menu instead because I wanted to make the decision based off what was being offered for lunch. I decided to leave and try two other places before making the decision, however we came back, and I told the host we were back, and we like to be seated with the lunch menu. The host said something to her peer in her language and her and another person looked at us. Weird I thought but I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. When she came to the table, she said are you ready? She didn't offer any recommendations or suggestions; she didn't even ask how we were doing for the day. My niece ordered and before she can add to anything else the waitress immediately said is that it. The waitress did the same to me, but I interrupted her to say can you add extra gravy and make it extra spicy. The waitress said that is a light dish gravy and I replied I know but I wanted more. The waitress took my ordered with passive aggressive behavior. I wanted to order more but I figured she was in a hurry, and I didn't order additional. The waitress said some things to her peers in their language and they all started looking in our direction speaking back and forth with each other and not in English. At this point I knew I should have just left, but we stayed. The food came out and oh my God this was the smallest lunch plates we had ever seen. My niece had shrimp lobster sauce and she had 4 to 5 shrimp seriously and my Mongolian beef was all onions and oil with pieces of beef. I waited until she was finish with the other table and asked for some soy sauce, when I did that, she said something else to her peers and they look again. I stopped and asked was there a problem? Is everything okay? She replied yes, it's okay. I can tell she wasn't expecting me to say that. We didn't stay long, and I ask for the check. This is teaching me a lesson and the only thing I could think of is support my own and buy black. I'm tired of giving my hard-earned money to businesses who don't have love passion to serve. My advice is for anyone who doesn't like to serve is to get out the hospitality business!!!! read more

I have been coming here for 4 years and I have NEVER been FORCED to tip like I was this past Monday. I could not afford to tip this time, and I wrote $0 for tip and she insisted and kept pointing to the store copy receipt and said "you have to put something" over and over till my friend gave her $3 to leave our table and let us leave. It's Saturday night, we had a taste for some Chinese Food. So why not visit Chinatown, and sit down and enjoy an authentic meal. We walked around the mall off Cermak and Wenworth. Joy Yee's was crowded, so we kept walking and came across Lee Wing Wah. Great decision, we ordered the Shrimp toast, seafood and vegetables, of course the wings and Schezwan Chicken, everything was so fresh and flavorful. There was family of 5 across from us, that ordered the family style dinner which included the seafood rice wrapped in Lotus Leaves. I forgot to mention they have a full bar. ....and the smoothies. This place has the most amazing food. I always bring out of town guests here because the food is great! The orange chicken - amazing! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because of the servers attitudes. I always warn my guests that the servers are always rude. Always in a rush to leave the table and just generally don't care. Often times I have to flag someone down to get another drink. My suggestion: Just act kind of happy and it would be an improvement. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the bathroom was actually very clean. I was expecting the bathroom to be dirty, but I really had to go, but seeing how clean it was gave me a lot of comfort. There was no bad smell, the floors where mopped and the toilet was clean. I also was a fan of the architecture of the bathroom. The wall tiles where very nice and brought it all together. I noticed while sitting there that the toilet paper dispenser had a little bit of rust on it. The toilet paper itself was very low quality. This was very concerning and a little bit painful. While washing my hands I was very impressed. The soap was high quality, there was air freshener and there where flowers on the sink. The flower really helped the room be esthetically pleasing. The hand drier worked very well. Overall the bathroom was a good experience. The toilet paper is very concerning but hopefully a fixable issue. I would recommend using this bathroom to a friend. read more

A no frills but tasty establishment for Chinese comfort food. We ordered a fixed price menu for two. A pork broth soup for starters followed by fish fillets over bed of greens and garlic, a vermicelli rice noodle with dried shrimplets and pork chops pepper/salt style. As far as Chinatown Square goes, Lee Wing Wah is one of the better sit-down restaurants when taking into consideration the friendliness of the staff, speed of the service, and the tastiness of the dishes. Rolling in for an early lunch, we were struck with bouts of indecision -- both due to the expansive menu and also because everything sounded delicious. Prior to the main entrees, we were served complimentary chicken ginseng soup, which would have been more appropriate for a cold, wintry day but was an excellent start nonetheless. The salt and pepper pork chops (my favorite comfort food at any Chinese joint) came out piping hot with the right amount of crisp and juice. The stuffed tofu with fish was equally delectable with generous fillets of tilapia. Lastly, the beef and gai lan (Chinese broccoli.) While this dish may seem rather difficult to screw up, I can't count the number of times when I have been disappointed by the delivery of it. Thankfully, LWW's version proved to be a winner and the sauces were more subtly seasoned. Additionally, their small smoothie menu is not to be overlooked as the blended goodnesses are made with fresh fruits (as opposed to the powdery mix.) The lychee smoothie definitely hit the spot on a sweltering day. read more

I haven't been to China Town in a while and ventured there on Memorial Day. We were starving when we arrived and this was one of the first places we saw and decided to give them a try. Service is okay and the food was pretty decent. I had the Sauteed Chicken Casserole. Once I added siracha sauce and soy sauce it tasted delicious and the broth almost reminded me of ramen. The smoothies here are delicious and you can combine up to two flavors. I went with the Strawberry/Pineapple Smoothie. For $3.50 the smoothies are definitely worth it. Prices all around were reasonable and the seating is for all sized groups. I would recommend giving this place a try. read more

Our Chinese landlady randomly decided to treat all her tenants out to dinner in Chinatown and this is the spot she choose. Its very unassuming from the outside and a tad divey on the inside. Not much ambiance really, and you can tell that this restaurant has been around for some time. Not a bad thing though, because it gave the place kind of a homey feel. Our party of six was seated at a big round table with a neat spinny thingy on it. We were all given menus and we each picked a few different items. The menu was rather extensive with some exotic sounding items, like pigeon, and standard Chinese food as well. We all picked a few items, which were brought out promptly onto the spinny thingy so that the food could very easily be passed around between all of us. So service was very to the point, no small talk, no folly, didn't bother me in the least though because its not like they were rude or anything, because anything asked for was taken care of. We had a TON of food. Egg Rolls, Crab Rangoon, Fried Jumbo Shrimp, Hong Kong Steak, Salt and Spicy Chicken, Beef with Pea pods, Fried rice with all kinds meat in it, Lobster with ginger and green onions, Chicken with Garlic sauce, and Ginsing Soup. It came out in HUGE portions. Everything was yummy. I will just give a rundown of all the things I sampled. The Egg rolls were super crispy and flavorful, and waitress brought out containers of delectable spicy mustard and sweet sauce to go with them. Turns out they make the spicy mustard in house. It packed a punch that went right to my sinuses, I think I'd go back just for that experience alone! Crab Rangoon were made with super fresh crab and were salty but in a really good way. Salt and Spicy chicken was super crisp, super juicey, and really salty...it was really super good, add a bit of spicy mustard and it was like the icing on the cake. Garlic Chicken was fantastic, a super spicy garlicly sauce coating moist pieces of chicken and a nice variety of veggies. Not like the Chinese places around here that think garlic chicken is just chicken with a nasty greasy brown sauce...bleck, no this was awesome and how garlic chicken is supposed to taste. Oh and the Lobster? Caught fresh from their tank, Was super good. I was a little worried that the ginger would overpower the taste of the lobster, but no not in the least. I'm a sucker for lobster and love it doused in butter, but this was really awesome. Nothing stood out about the beef with pea pods but nothing was bad about it either. The ginsing soup, Well um it tasted like ginsing...and it kept me awake all night. (No I'm not mad about that, Just know that it does give you energy!) The fried was was also very good, and that says a lot because usually I am not big on rice. Don't over look this place when your in Chinatown! read more

Came here with a group of friends for dinner & left very satisfied. Though the decor is not as flashy as other restaurants in Chinatown, in no way does it reflect the food. Right off the bat, the owner was very welcoming & nice when we asked for recommendations as to what to eat. When the food came out, I quickly noticed how big the portions were. Some restaurants in Chinatown are stingy with how much they give you but not Lee Wing Wah. I ordered the honey walnut shrimp & it was delicious. The waiters seemed very attentive & refills of water were not an issue at all. All in all, this restaurant is one of the most slept on restaurants in Chinatown. If you're looking for a restaurant with good food, good prices, and huge portions, Lee Wing Wah is the place to go! read more

My first ever 1* review :-( Please stay away from this place, there is absolutely no reason to eat at this horrible 'restaurant'. So many other amazing choices in Chinatown. Had 2 appetizers (both dry and had no taste), 3 entrees - all were horrible, greasy, no taste and served cold. The glasses were so dirty we did not touch our drinks, left all drink untouched. Service was rude & slow. At this point - we come to Chinatown twice a month for several years - I have probably tried at least 15 restaurants over the years. This place has not only the worse food in Chinatown, but the worse Chinese food I have ever had. That's saying something as I lived in China for several years. Very family or group dining oriented, you can count on a good meal for a good price here. They have this delicious spicy and salty fried tofu that melts in your mouth. It's like the salty squid at triple crown, but with bite-sized tofu instead. The clams with black bean sauce is good too. I have been here for lunch and dinner and have enjoyed it both times. Lee Wing Wah is tucked into a large strip mall with about 73 other Chinese restaurants, but this place still has a regular following. Not only was it recommended to me by a friend, but I have also since recommended it to others. The lesson is that while Chinatown may have many dining options, there are definitely only a few that deserve a mention, Lee Wing Wah being one of them. The menu here has a very large variety of options (including Pigeon!). The appetizers list is relatively short and includes many of the typical American-Chinese food items, but the entree options take up about 5 menu pages and there are pictures if you need help deciding. The dishes are quite large and can be shared between 2 or 3 people. Lunch with a friend consisted of 2 egg rolls and one order to General Tso's chicken... total was $12 and we were completely full. Bring your quarters because parking by the strip mall is mostly parking meters with 15 min/quarter. The restaurant is right in the middle of the lower level of the large strip mall on Archer. It's hard to find, but definitely worth the search. read more
