Best hero's hands down. Been going here for years, and they know how to do it. The absolute best bread, which is obviously the key to a great sandwich. And most importantly, for me anyway, they dont overload the sandwich with tons of meat. It's the perfect balance. And yes the place could be a lot cleaner. But from what I observe they keep the kitchen area clean...the store just looks messy because of all the antiques on the shelves. read more

There's a reason restaurant critics mention the décor - it has a lot to do with the whole experience. Leggios represents one of my favorite things about eating - the time warp. You won't have to squint at all to be in the late 60s-early 70s...it seems as though this place has been untouched by anything since then, including a broom. Yet the sandwiches are fabulous - they almost seem to have a throwback taste as well as portion and price. On a recent visit, two of these were transported through the time machine: an Italian and a turkey. I didn't measure, but the brown butcher paper-wrapped monsters were at least a foot long. Not too much meat - just enough, which is how I remember sandwiches from my childhood. They've also forgotten to raise the prices in 40 yrs or so - the turkey sub (see pic) was only $4.25 - that's for a whole sub, not a half. I'll sell you all the $5 'footlongs' you want...gimme Leggios any day. The Italian was $2 more, and I have no idea why, but its a steal in any event. I've had better subs (see Faicco's Pork Store), but also paid double. If you're anywhere near Bay Shore and in the mood for a terrific sandwich and a museum visit - Leggios is legendary. read more

Is that a Deli in a House? As soon as you step in this neighborhood landmark, it is like you stepped into a time machine. My pops used to frequent this spot in the early 70s as a student at Bay Shore High School. Leggios was the happening spot where the cool kids hung out and they still make great sandwiches too. Don't let the fifty year old dust and junk behind the counter scare you away. Joey and Lou Leggio are such amicable gentlemen who love to strike up lengthy conversations. I kid you not, I was there for 45 minutes to an hour talking about everything from war and peace, to the dwindling economic duress in America. The prices were right and recession friendly. What makes a Leggios sandwich so great is their high quality Italian bread which is crispy and crusty while being chewy on the outside. The inside was light and airy and so worth the intake of refined carbohydrates. I had an Italian and a roast beef. The Italian was on outstanding. I only wish there were a couple more pieces of meat but I shouldn't complain because it only cost a pittance. The fennel seeds sprinkled inside brought all the flavors of Italy together. The roast beef was alright but it didn't taste home-made. Next time I'm in town I'd try the American. Great Bang for your Buck in Bay Shore. read more

Found out about this place through my dad. Him and his buddy stop in from time to time for sandwiches. Very small place that looks more like a house driving by than a place to go for sandwiches. Inside it's filled with old things. This place is not for the faint of heart, the place isn't clean in the least bit. Chips $1-$2, soda $1-$2 and sandwiches are very cheap $6+. My girlfriend and I got 2 drinks, a big bag of chips, and 2 12" spicy italian subs and it came to around $16. read more

Went in after hearing the reviews. Owner was beyond nice. They made sure I was taken care of. Sandwich was fine immediately. I was in and out within minutes. Dirty store, the person who makes the sandwiches doesn't wash or sanitize his hands before making the sandwiches. And there are flies in the store. I understand the emotional attachment people have to this deli, seeing as it's been in business since like the 1600's (sarcasm)...however, I think it's time to shut it down. read more

A friend of mine born and raised in Bay Shore could not believe that I had never heard of Leggios and swore it was the best hero I would ever eat. Considering American heros are my absolute favorite thing in the world I decided it was definitely worth a shot. I was pretty skeptical when I was forewarned about the details of this place such as it takes about an hour for a sandwich to be prepared, and that although it sounds like a deli, really it's just a couple of old guys who serve hero's out of their home. So was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! I tried both the American and Italian hero and have never had another sandwich that tasted so good. All the ingredients are fresh and in perfect portion. The light drizzle of some special Italian dressing on the Italian hero is superb and doesn't overwhelm the rest of the flavors inside the bread. Word of advice... call in your order at least an hour before you plan on picking it up and prepare for a little small talk to go with your sandwich read more

The last time I had been in Leggios was in 1966. That's 52 years ago. I drove by recently and stopped in and it doesn't look any different, just older. Even by 1960's standards, it's still pretty spartan. All of the same equipment and accoutrements that were there a half century ago are still there today, they just have an extra layer of dirt and clutter covering them. Since I ate there in the 1960's, I must be inoculated against whatever food borne illnesses the grime might carry, but I'm sure the prep area is cleaner. I ordered a half sized turkey hero which came wrapped in heavy butcher paper, it had a slice of American cheese and enough mayo so that when you bit in one end, some came out the other. They included a couple of paper towels right off the roll just for this purpose. They didn't have any diet soda, just C&C Cola, Orange and Grape. A 24 ounce bottle for a dollar. Together everything came to $4.40. About half the usual price of a deli lunch and, by the way, it was a darn good hero too. read more

Ok, i dont want to be the bad guy here but... I look up a sandwich shop on yelp in my immediate area which happened to be bayshore and see that im really close to a 4 and a half star deli with "the best cheap sandwiches". Always open for a bargain on long island i tipped in even though the previous reviews mentioned the cleanliness or lack thereof of the shop. Heres my take. First of all im not sure if i would agree that this place is not clean. Its horribly unclean! The people who work this biz look to be a 3 or 4 generation family owned place with very very past retirement age guys behind the counter. Not to be ageist but the attitude of the sandwich makers seemed like they were tired of operating this place for the last 50 yrs. I walked up to the counter and a wrapped 9sandwich was thrust at me and the man said "italian?" I wasnt sure if he was asking my ethnic background or what i wanted for lunch. I said yes cause i happen to be italian and it sounded like a good thing to eat. It was the special so i figured i would go with what they seemed to do best. I took the oil stained paper wrapped hoagie and proceeded to the register behind which seemed to be THE Mr leggio. The man who started it all 50 yrs ago. He seemed to be in his 80s or better and rang up my special which was $6.00 even. A bargain i thought. Figuring with all the money they save on cleaning material they can afford to charge less for their food. BUT right after mr leggio gave me the change, and dont get me wrong he seemed like a pleasant older gentleman who gave me the wrong change btw, i went out to my car and opened the the special and i realized the next reasons for the puny prices, it was the equally puny amount of deli on the cardboard like bread. The bread was huge, puffy airfilled and dry, like they tried to save flour by subbing in some sawdust, while the amount of meat didnt even come close to covering it. I've had sandwiches where the bread isnt covered with the contents and you have just bread on the ends which wind up joining the paper in the trash. Whats the point? I might as well have asked for a bread sandwich with bread on it, oh and put a little extra bread please! Bottom line is...look if your not gonna keep the place clean at least gimme a hero that knocks my sox off. There are plenty of delis in long island that are cleaner that at least make a decent hero. I think ill pass on leggios next time im in the area. read more

First, the place is well off the beaten path. This could indicate goodness, or equally indicate poor ness. Sadly, the bread was sub par here and really ruined the hero. The toppings are just ok, as were the meats. The owner is a nice person, but it doesn't translate to the food. read more

I've traveled & lived all across this country, Canada & in Europe and have always compared the Hero/Sub/Po'boy/Submarine/Italian/Hoagie/Grinder (whatever name the local parlance uses to refer to this type of sandwich) to sandwiches I have savored at Leggio's Deli. Let me begin by saying that I'm very open-minded. I don't care if a place looks dirty or disorganized if the food is good. I'll give anybody the benefit of the doubt- despite some bad reviews. However, as I can now attest and assure you, the food here is disgusting and, being prepared in an environment that would make a hobo puke, you can't stop thinking about how you're probably going to get sick from it. As earlier reviewers have said, the "meat" is processed, slimy, and/or green. The customer service experience is what I would describe as "freaky". Please, heed my advice and avoid this place. The positive reviews seem to be from people that have some sort of historical connection to the place. I was the only person in there for a full 30 minutes on a Saturday at lunch time. That should tell you something. Perhaps it was a decent place 50 years ago, but it's not now. Don't let the positive reviews prompt you to look here for a hidden gem (as they did me). The shelves behind the register are stuffed with papers and kicknacks from the 1960's. 5. The three favorites are the American, Italian and Roast Beef heros. Order all three you won't be sorry. Take them home. After you taste one, You'll eat the others. 6. No salads. no mac or slaw or pot.or sides of any type. Not even a pickle. I've been coming here for years. I worked in a deli, so im a fairly good judge of them. Great service, tasty food and unbelievably low prices. This is 2016 and they charge $3 for half hero $6 for the most expensive full size subs!? $1 for can soda, no markup like a regular deli? If you look at their price sheet, it hasn't been updated in at least 10 years. Sandwiches are delicious and filling. 3 best things about long island, the beaches, the NY pizza places and this particular deli. It's not easy to spot it, but definitely don't miss it. read more

My husband researched the best deli sandwiches in the area we were staying at. We went to Leggios and there is a reason a street is named after them. It looked like a house on a residential street. Do not miss it!! I had a full Turkey hero and my husband had the roast beef. A very delicious hero for both of us and the bread was delicious too. Of course it is old and run down but lovely owners and delicious sandwiches overshadow the shabbiness. We would highly recommend this place. Very disappointed . Google said it was open until 6pm. Got there around 530 and was rudely met at the door by a guy in glasses with a black shoe polish toupee. He rudely said they were closed and shut the door. That is how you run a business?I believe his.name is Lou. Also. After reading the reviews of this place we decided we would give it a try on the way to the Fire Island ferry. I must say we were shocked after arriving and even more disappointed after eating our heroes. Old and quaint is one thing but filthy, with gobs of dust hanging from everywhere, filthy floors and shelves and the stench that makes your nose hairs tingle is a little too much. Yet we trusted our fellow Yelpers and bought a bunch of heroes. Now mind you we called an hour ahead to order 5 heroes and still had to wait over a 1/2 an hour to get them. My wife had to wait outside as the smell was making her ill. The 3 slices of "turkey" on the hero really didn't seem like turkey at all but more like a cheap imitation pressed turkey crap the Boars head commercials make fun of. The "fresh roasted roast beef" was not that at all and made Arby's look like filet mignon. As a bonus it had that grey green sheen to it. After eating half of a half we decided the potential gastro-intestinal risk in finishing them was too high and shared the rest with the seagulls. read more

I grew up in Bay Shore and knew Joe and Lou Leggio personally~these are two of the greatest guys you'll ever meet! My family went there for years, I went during lunchtime at Bay Shore High and when I was grown took my three kids. We would usually get a ham & swiss and my mom would get tuna. Joe would always spoil the kids with a piece of candy or slice of bologna~ I am so glad to know they are still there and more generations are getting to taste the Leggio hero! I now live in TN and miss their hero's. I wish there was someway to have them shipped, but having them made fresh there in front of you is all apart of the great flavor you find in these hero's. read more

First off I don't normally review, but for Leggio's i have to make an exception. Also, notice that all the good reviews for Leggio's are from people that live in the neighborhood and are reminiscing about back in the 60's and 70's. I came here on my lunch break thinking I'm about to enjoy a delicious hero - boy was I wrong. I waited in Leggio's for AN HOUR and no one took my order, or even acknowledged my existence for that matter, and there was only one person ahead of me (who had already ordered). BE WARNED: THIS IS NOT A DELI! It is an old house that happens to sell heros and thats it. The owner is more concerned with bullshitting and reminiscing with customers than actually serving food. I looked over the counter multiple times (in an attempt to politely get the attention of an employee) and has the displeasure of seeing the cold cuts used. FRED P. IS 100% RIGHT, it is by no means quality meat at all, its that pressed stuff that you can find in dining halls all over US college campuses. I can deal with the dirty store that smells funky, but waiting an hour for a sandwich should be a crime. I had to walk out empty handed because I only get a half hour for my lunch break.
