On a recent weekend getaway with the Mr. we stayed in the FiDi. I had bagels on my *list* of things to eat while in NYC. After a Yelp search, I discovered Leo's Bagels was just a short distance away. I had the same experience as many other reviewers and had to stand in line for about 20 minutes before making it inside. I couldn't make up my mind, so I ordered two for the Mr. and I to split. I ordered a traditional which was salmon + scallion cream cheese + onions + capers and tomatoes and an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. These bagels were huge, oozing with filling, and would have easily fed three or four people. Even though I couldn't finish my share, I was stuffed until dinner. It's good. We went here Friday morning after Thanksgiving and apparently the line was considered short. It was already down the street, but it did go by quick. Its a big, hearty size and pretty pricey. I knew the scallion creme cheese was extra based on the reviews but apparently all the other dressing, such as lettuce and tomatoes were also extra charges. I haven't had a chance to try any other new york bagel places so I don't have anything to compare the pricing to. Overall I thought it was good. I wouldn't go back here again if I'm in the area mainly because I'd want to try other places and this place doesn't stand out enough for me to crave it to go back. I was definitely expecting this place to be an over hyped tourist trap but I am pleasantly surprised with these bagels. If I was closer in proximity to these, I could easily see them being a go-to spot for me. I tried: Everything bagel with cream cheese: good, loved that the bagel had seasoning on both sides of the bagel. Cream cheese could have been spicer IMO. Hanover Hanover (on a plain bagel) this was a surprising winner for me. The latke combined with the sausage egg and cheese was a HIT. It is very heavy and definitely suits the name of 'hangover' food. I also really liked the plain bagel. It was the perfect consistency and flavor for my taste. Baked salmon salad, this was very oily but also very very yummy. It provided me a few lunches and it was great with some red onion. I also got an iced coffee (just ok, but did the job). I waited about 45 min in line. Is it worth it? I probably would do it again if I wasn't starving but I did see a trick- looks like people place their orders to go online and they can bypass the line to pick up their food! I'd definitely do that. Came in on a Friday around lunch and got the boychick. The sandwich was great! Super big, very filling, and very decadent. Also got a fruit cup and iced coffee all for about $30. Pretty pricey all things considered but really tasty. Only downside is it's very disorganized/confusing where you order, etc. Really hit the spot though! On the way to Staten Island we decided to make a stop to get some bagels and ended up here. I got the cinnamon raisin bagel with maple walnut cream cheese. I think the two sweet combinations may have been a little overkill but it was still very good. The cinnamon raisin bagel was really good, you can see in the picture the bagel had a really pretty cinnamon swirl. As for the maple walnut cream cheese, I wasn't a huge fan of the walnut chunks in the cream but other than that it was good. As for pricing my bagel and cream cheese and an orange juice and it was 12$. The orange juice was also freshly squeezed supposedly but didn't really taste like it. This is def not the case (maybe the company but not this location) because my old apartment is a few hundred feet from this shop and I would absolutely have loved being able to stop in the mornings. By the time you've paid and are waiting, it's a mess and super confusing. A tiny place like this does not need 20 people in it. The bagels were huge but also very expensive. Two bagels, a water and an apple juice should not cost $60, even if they are bagel sandwiches. I'm not going to say my "The Whole Shebang" wasn't good. It was good. Very, very good. But I could only eat half. It's that big. Also, the toaster was down but I eat my bagels like a real New Yorker, so that didn't bother me ;) Maybe I'd like this place better on a weekday when they open. *3.5 STARS* I will preface this by saying that I adore bagels; and being from NJ, I personally feel like i critique them quite seriously. Leo's in FiDi is a tiny shop, with a convenient location from my office- near Wall Street and South Ferry. The shop it TINY and typically quite busy and loud. They do take orders online, which I would recommend doing if you can; it took 20 minutes for me to get a bagel with cream cheese. While in line, you'll typically see a plethora of food delivery services and people grabbing their to go meals. There is only one register, so ordering ahead seems to be the best course of action, IMO. They have a wide array of bagels, juices, etc. I was impressed at how well stocked their bagels were for how busy they were. I ordered a multigrain bagel with cream cheese. On the plus side, I found this bagel to be large and flavorful. I also found the cream cheese to bagel ratio to be nearly perfect- which I feel is something you typically don't get. On a less positive note, this place is expensive for what you get. I spent nearly $5 for a bagel with cream cheese. Secondly, the bagel was tough to eat- like legitimately hard to chew. I found myself tugging to chew it. I liked Leo's the first time I went there in June, despite the long wait. This time, we ordered delivery and it look way longer than expected and estimated. I'm not sure who's fault it was; Leo's or the delivery service, but it was unacceptable either way. My go to is generally an everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese, and this time I got that with egg. tldr: a solid bagel shop in an area which doesn't have many traditional bagel shops. I highly recommend The Shimmy sandwich. Leo's is a quiet neighborhood institution in FiDi. I came here frequently when I lived there for their bagel sandwiches. There's usually a line of people waiting outside, but you can also order online for pickup or delivery. The menu here is pretty big like you'd find at larger bagel shops: plenty of sandwich options, cream cheeses & spreads, and deli meats. But I've only ever come here for their "Specialty Sandwiches."
