I've heard over and over again that the Library Bar has a great mixologist they make the best drinks. I've tried to come on a few occasions and never had a drink because the place was too crowded! FINALLY, last night which was a Sunday around midnight, I was finally able to try out a drink. I asked him to make me a Vodka drink with Grapefruit juice. It was soooooooooooooooooooo freaking good! It's the best drink I've had in a very long time. He used fresh grapefruit juice with all the pulps and all. My friend ordered a lemony drink and it was an A+ as well. The only thing stopping me from ordered 10 drinks is that it cost $16 per drink. I'll drop in for a cocktail or two but then I'd have to move on or go broke! I'm not into cocktails but this place a must place to visit. This is located inside the Roosevelt Hotel. A nice cozy and intimate little bar. Like I said I'm not big on cocktails, but I was impressed. I told the bartender that I'm not big on mix drinks and that I like rum. The man, whipped something out of top of his head and gave me this enjoyable drink. Delicious but yet perfect taste of alcohol. I recommend anyone to try this place at least once. So was winding down a long weekend in LA and was looking to catch up with a few friends who had flown in from all over. I looked for a joint that would be in the center of all the different locations people were at and landed in the Hollywood area. I had been meaning to try out Library Bar and decided to hit this spot up for a few cocktails and casual conversation. This joint is located within the Roosevelt and is a tiny "tucked away" type of bar. It has a rustic feel to it and is perfect for an intimate gathering or date as you can nestle away in a corner of the area. The place was not busy but this can be attributed to a Sunday night and there was one bartender watching the whole joint. Parking is tough around the area but the hotel does offer validated parking when you spend time at the library bar which made it a reasonable price. There are only a few tables and spots at the bar so if you are deadest on being here, make sure to show up early enough. The bartender was super friendly and made his way around all the folks in the bar. He would take orders and offer recommendations and certainly knew how to make his drinks as a professional mixologist. The ingredients were fresh and the guy was creative with his drinks as I perused everyone's final drink product. The service is a little slow so if you are antsy make sure to order two drinks at once The Drinks are pricy but I think that is to be expected for a spot like this. The bar has very few boots and tables and you will need to arrive prior to 7pm if you want to get a boot or a table. The bar does not have a drink menu, but the bar tender is highly skilled in preparing your drink in accordance with your own specific preferences. Came here with my boyfriend and our drinks were amazing! There were no drink menus which was odd but interesting. We told the bartender what we were in a mood for. I said cognac and sweet it is exactly what I got! No clue what was in it but it consisted of what I wanted. My BF wanted cognac and spicy which is what he got. They had a small app menu I had their chicharron app nothing special about it. It was very empty it is a small bar. Yelp stated the opening time as 8:00 we got there at 7:55 the bartender told us they were open since 6! Hopefully that is fixed by now. read more

Located in the Roosevelt Hotel, its a very small and dark bar, but it also has a very cozy vibe to it, the ambiance is really nice. The bar is filled with fresh fruit, veggies and herbs and they definitely can make you good drinks with them. It may sound weird at first but I know you'll enjoy it. They have very skilled mixologists, the drinks were delicious. I would recommend you try it out at least once, especially if you want to get away from the same old bars with the same old drinks. Great place to bring your friends in DTLA! I love the vibe there its more hipster than anything. I mean, it is called Library bar. Just beware if you do go that it is very loud inside because the bar is very small but tends to get crowded quick! Everyone tries talking above the music so you can barely hear someone standing right next to you. But it is a fun environment! I've gone a few times with friends and we always have a good time. The other guests are usually pretty friendly too so they'll start up a conversation with you. It looks like it is a classier bar based off the guests i've seen come through. I don't believe there is a dress code but be sure to wear your nicer clothes if you plan on coming here as i've seen quite a few business groups come on Friday nights. A friend of mine has been telling me about the Library Bar for weeks now - and specifically about Matt - master mixologist made infamous by magazine articles and a serious following. By 10-10:30ish, this tiny dark venue was already filled with people standing by the bar, patiently waiting for Matt to create something amazing for them. The crowd was FASCINATING - a micro mini dress-wearing leggy-forever platinum blonde (a tiny bit of cheek showing even) in her mohawked boyfriend's lap, a straw cowboy hat wearing crunchy granola 50-something woman, a bachelorette party (wasting Matt's presence by doing SHOTS, my friend complained), and obvious Matt Fans. Matt had glasses and ceramic dishes set out on the bar with the freshest ingredients of the day. Some I noticed were: blackberries, Hachiya persimmons, skinny green feijoa guavas, flaked coconut, Thai basil sprigs, passion fruits, cacao nibs, arugula, green and red heirloom tomatoes, a Buddha's Hand citron, firey-looking skinny red chili peppers.....there must have been more than a dozen ingredients! Matt recognized my friend and even with the crowd in front of him, said a warm hello and they did the man-buddy handshake thing. Watching him work, you could see he was one sharp cookie - and loving every minute! He would get a hint or two from someone, then get to creating a drink based on this, looking up to deliver a creation or greet another familiar face while he worked. A couple of friendly girls at the bar shared their basil-topped coconutty something and arugula martini with me, and I realized this was totally new territory for a non-drinker foodie like me! So when we were up, I asked for something berry and herby, and my friend asked for a repeat of an awesome drink he had once before. This is why I got drunk tonight : P..... We were there to kill time before our dinner. I admired the mixology skills of the bartenders with good quality ingredients here so much. Small entrance off the east side of the lobby, across from 25 Degrees. 2 good sized booths, a couple couches, 4 chairs around a small cocktail table, and a bar about 8 wide with plenty of standing room for about a couple dozen more. At the bar there is a hedge of herbs, peppers, bitters and greens that separate you from the bartenders. There are no menus here, the salad in front of you is to help inspire your creativity. The mixologists know all of the classics and if you don't know the name of a drink, don't worry, just let them know what you are thinking of and they'll come up with something to suit your taste. Had drinks twice here on Saturday, the first time was at 7PM before dinner and ordered from the side of the bar for quicker service (was 3 deep in the middle, casuals). I had twist on a Penicillin and they made the Mrs. a gin based cocktail with fresh tomato juice which was quite refreshing. Both enjoyed. Our friends ordered a Greyhound made with fresh grapefruit, really good, and a vodka based cocktail featuring arugula which I enjoyed a sip of but the drinker orderer didn't care much for it (says was reminiscent of health juice). The second time was after going out to dinner and another bar, must've been about 1AM as we heard last call shortly before we left. This time we were able to take a seat at the center of the bar, as patrons were thinning out. Let the bartender know I was looking for something with red bell peppers, mezcal and a bit of heat and he came up with what is pictured - initially sweet with a smoky spicy finish. 5 stars because in my younger days I would have been all over this place making plans to come back while I was already there. The massive singular ice cube, while aesthetically pleasing really cuts your drink to about a third liquid. Drinks are pricey, yet standard for LA at $18. An evening here could easily set you back a couple hundred without consuming any solid food. BF was in somewhat pleased, but not overwhelmed with his scotch concoction. A tiny and loud as fuck space, which is not my flavor whatsoever, but again, in another life it would have been. It was a saving grace that at 48 I was not the oldest person in the room, but this is a young person sort of crowd. The female asked us what we wanted, and I just told her sweet & fruity, while my bf said..I forgot what he said -__- Afterwards, ol' girl went to work. About 5 or so minutes later, I have a strawberry something with 3 raspberries on top, mixed with some celery and some alcohol. My bf had his drink with a really delicious cucumber! There is so much more I could say about Matt Biancaniello, head mixologist of Library Bar but I don't think I am really that qualified when it comes to cocktails. But just observing him and seeing the pride he takes in his ingredients (seasonal farmer's market) and his drive to impress and please his customers one would never have thought that Matt has only been performing his craft for just 2 years. Without a set drink menu, my friend and I told the bartender which flavors we generally preferred and off to work he went. It was magical to witness our guy at work: a dash of this, a sprinkle of that, give it a shake, and BAM! Perfection! ...Six times in a row. I am conflicted. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Here, I'll explain. Pros: The cocktails they make here are some of the best you'll ever come across. Aside from Vincenzo at Copa D' Oro in Santa Monica, Matt is the only other guy around LA that buys the produce for his drinks at Farmer's Market's. From what I hear, Matt is actually growing his own too now. Talk about passion! Anyway, this is where my love for this place plummets, unfortunately. Cons: 1) While every drink I tried were superb, the price tag was not. Three cocktails for slightly over $50 with tip is really harsh. 2) Parking sucks around this hotel and if you valet, depending on the day and time...$$! 3) Most of the people that party it up, in and around the hotel are typical drunk Hollywood douche bags. And then all of a sudden, I see the lighter. And her grabbing a sprig of rosemary. Say what?? I stupidly asked her what she was doing and she answered with a blank face, 'I'm smoking it.' I'm sure she was thinking 'DUH' but I just stood there with my mouth open. Smoking it, huh? WHY HAVE I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT?? So she finally hands me my drink and even though I've had these ingredients many times before, I can taste the difference right away. With our 20's quickly dwindling away, my friends and I found ourselves here on a spontaneous trip from Norcal, as the idea of the not wasting the remaining few years before the big THREE-OH hits has become a sort of mantra in our lives. The same spontaneity the led me here is the same reason why I'm giving it 4 stars. Rather then following standard recipes from a menu of pre-formulated drinks, the bartenders (or should I say artists? because that is what they really are) concoct delicious cocktails on the fly based on your preferences. Cocktails with some real-time critical thinking involved. I like that. When you walk up to the bar, you'll also notice that it's not the standard. It looks more like a farmer's market with the variety of fresh produce and herbs overflowing onto the countertop. I asked for something with elderflower, fruits, and egg whites and the result was nothing short of delicious. The alcohol content must have been generous too as I found myself stumbling a bit after just one drink when it was time to leave (classy I know). At $17 a drink, it's more than the norm. And it's a small space, so you may have to stand. But, for us aging fogies that want to live it up while momentary irresponsibility can still be a relatively harmless option, I'd say making a trip here at least once is worth it. read more

I want to live here. This is a very small bar located in The Roosevelt hotel and you wouldn't know it existed unless you bothered to try and find it. My boyfriend and I ended up here accidentally and I truly believe that accidents happen for a reason because this was so fantastic. As I said, it's very tiny, it probably can hold 15 - 20 people max, which only adds to the exclusive feel of this bar. It's dark inside with comfortable leather chairs and booths. It's the kind of place where you want to stay there, drinking your cocktails, while smoking a cigar and enjoying life. I wasn't aware that this place makes customized $17.00 cocktails so when I ordered my drink, I was surprised at the price but my god, it's worth it. I told the bartender that I loved gin, egg white and rosewater. She said she had lavender and we went from there. My drink was comprised of egg white, gin, lavender, basil, cucumber and blood orange and had blackberries in it. It was just so good. I'm a sucker for herbal tasting drinks and this was just smooth. I really had to pace myself because I could have easily drank this in under 5 minutes - it was that delicious. I really want to come back here when I'm not under a time constraint. You should take someone you love here (as my boyfriend says, "take yourself") or take someone you want to impress, it's a great first date spot. read more

I am not a bar-fly type of person. I love a good glass of wine with dinner, but when it comes to Sex on the Beach and Bahama Mama's I stay away. It's next day headache in the glass. But this place.. Oh, THIS PLACE - just awesome! When you walk-in - it looks like they have a garden on the table - a lot of fruit, herbs, veggies. You select what you want in the cocktail from "the garden" and the alcohol you want in it. And wait for the result. We ended up getting 5 cocktails and all of the were very different but equally fantastic! They all have names, but not the ones I heard before. Cool little hidden gem inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Located just off of the main lobby, it's literally like someones personal reading room (you know the kind, filled with many leather bound books smelling of rich Mahogany... that kinda place) except dark, devious, and a little scary. I dig it. I was on a Mezcal kick so I ordered a Mezcal infused cocktail... or was it an Old Fashioned? Hmmm, I honestly just gapped on this, see what happens kids when you drink all night and try to remember your night. I do remember it was strong and took some mind over matter to get down so could have been a little more balanced and less alcohol forward. But overall enjoyable. Pricing wise it was steep 3 cocktails came at $50 premium so says my credit card statement. Ouch! This is truly an amazing place in an unlikely setting. A little difficult to find, you have to walk in the lobby of the Roosevelt and off to the left there is a dark, unmarked door. It's small, dimly lit, and cozy with all older, classic looking leather furniture. The bar top is a cornucopia of fresh, seasonal produce that Matt Biancaniello, the head bartender, personally purchases from local farmers markets several times per week to make his incredible cocktails. There is no formal menu, but rather you tell them what you like (bourbon, vodka, scotch, rum, fruitiness, sour, bitter, spicy, etc...). And almost anything is possible. Everything is fresh, they make all their mixers, juices, infusions, foams, etc.. from scratch. I highly recommend you seek this place out, park yourself at the bar, and ask them, "What's good today?" They've won a ton of awards, been featured in several magazines, including Imbibe, LA Times, and will be featured in the upcoming issue of Buon Appetite magazine. However, they still remain super humble, approachable, and passionate about making fresh, flavorful, well-balanced, creative cocktails tailored to fit any taste. Quite amazing. read more

Been here a couple of times and still not sure what the hype is all about. The cocktails were fine, nothing amazing, the clientele is a mix of tourists (in shorts and sneakers), out of the area folks (wanting desperately to fit in), hipsters (too cool to care) and locals.
