Local Cafe takes over the old Spicy Town location in Fremont. This HK Style Cafe opened its second location (the first in Cupertino). This place is spacious and clean. I was seated immediately, and I was handed the menu and served Hot Tea. There was a "Today's Special" menu with Rice Plates. I decided to order off that (you get Soup and a drink) -- Hainan Chicken with Rice and a Iced Milk Tea. The Milk Tea came out right away. The Chicken took a few minutes, but it was huge -- on two separate plates, one for the Chicken, one for the Rice. The food was good, and during their Soft Opening, it was 12% off the bill. Came here on Saturday around 12:30pm. It was just a 10 to 15 min wait. The place doesn't have a lot of tables, but plenty of spaces between tables, unlike some of the Chinese restaurants where you feel like sardinebin a can. Ordered: 1. Pork chop with black pepper sauce: the sauce is not peppery enough, but the pork chop is very tender. 2. Hai Nan Chicken over rice: fair amount of chicken, but it's bland. The ginger sauce is not gingery enough, and it's a bit on the salty side. The pickle is not good using the ones from Vietnamese sandwiches as a measuring stick.+ Overall, it's not bad, but not good enough. Don't even compare with the ones in LA. You would be further disappointed. 3. Salted fish Chiness sausage hot pot rice. Remember to ask for extra sauce. The sauce is served on the side, but not enough. Anything has that burned rice is goooooooood. 4. Hot honey alou: decent. If you are on low carb or keto diet, there are a few things you can order. While we were looking for a place to take our family for dinner I came across Local Cafe. I was a little weary of the ratings. I see that people complain about the service. We actually had really good service - promptly greeted/seated, order was taken without confusion, and food came out promptly. The caveat to this is that we spoke to them in Chinese. Came here on a Sunday night and it was pretty packed, we had one table in front of us and after we were seated more people slowly came trickling in. The menu is massive with traditional HK cafe food, hot pot soup set and deals for 3 dishes for $36. We ordered a stir fried beef udon, stir fried vermicelli noodles, beef soup and cured meat rice pot and all were pretty good. My favorite was the stir fried udon which was served on a sizzling plate. The only reason why I give this 3 stars is because service took FOREVERRR. We had to wait at least 10-15 min between dishes and looked like they were pretty understaffed. Local Cafe is a late night Chinese/Hong Kong style cafe (they close either 12:30/1 AM depending on the day). They are located in a big plaza with plenty of parking in the lot. They keep it bright and well lit on the outside at night, so it is hard to miss. The interior is very clean and modern as well. I looked at the menu beforehand and had a few items I wanted to try. Little did I know, after a certain time - they only have certain items and it is very limited as well, so I did not get to try any of those items I had in mind. My fiancé and I were looking for a new late night place to eat when we came across the Local Cafe Restaurant. Being that there was only one other customer in this restaurant when we initially walked in, we were kind of hesitant to go in and try their food. Fortunately we did because the food and service ended up being pretty good. We only ordered two dishes because it was a late night snack. I would give the taste of the beef stew noodles about a 3.5 star out of a 5 star rating for taste. The salt and pepper chicken wings would probably be rated around a 2.75 star rating out of 5. The restaurant was big, bright, and clean, and the service was good. Along with our meal, we also ordered the Aloe and Horlick drinks. They both tasted very bland. This place was chosen pretty last minute so I wasn't able to do my usual research on yelp. I think it would've helped if I knew beforehand because they had a very wide menu. We ended up ordering a baked seafood dish with white sauce, beef chow fun, and calamari fish balls from their newer appetizer menu. The food was all collectively pretty decent especially the portion size for two of the main dishes. I really enjoyed the chow fun, but really how can you mess that up. The only thing I regret ordering is the calamari balls which was essentially fish balls with a creamy radish sauce. The price was not worth it. I could literally make this at home and even then the combination did not taste so good. The service here was also terrible. If you want a semi-private enclosed space, they've got two of them. If you need a daycare pen for your toddlers, they've got that, too! That being said, Local Cafe has your standard Hong Kong cafe menu: noodles, fried rices, and, my favorite, baked rice and spaghetti dishes. They've also got a family style menu where you choose three items for roughly $25. I ordered a pork chop baked rice, which wound up having two pieces of pork, a sausage, an egg, and both tomato and cream sauce, coated with melted cheese and spread atop a bed of fried rice. If you've ever ordered one of these, you know what it tastes like. The flavors were on-point, and the pork was boneless. It wasn't too salty and the portion was pretty big. The chicken was tender and the breading was nice and crispy. I got the pork spareribs with rice, which does require a longer wait, but the pork was cooked well and tasty.
