Came here with 3 other people and we ordered the "3 for $26" combo + soup, plus some other items. The soup in the combo was...washed down with no flavor but a smelliness from pork? I had one spoonful and that was it. One of us was Cantonese and after trying the "Thousand year egg with pork porridge"(皮蛋瘦肉粥）and 干炒牛河 (Beef chow fun), he said no one should be giving this place more than 2 stars...... the pork in the porridge was pork strips, and nothing like your usual porridge. I survived by adding spicy sauce and white pepper in the porridge and other dishes. To be fair, the non-traditional canto dishes were better (the fish and tofu clay pot was fine). The double-skinned milk dessert was runny, but acceptable compared to the other dishes we had. +1 star for the decor. read more

This place isn't bad for a quick meal of HK diner style. I had curry fishballs and the B meal which was a bowl of laksa noodles which comes with a drink and soup of the day. For drink I picked hot hongkong milktea, and the soup was russian soup. I must say the laksa noodles were flavorful, and large portion with lots of meats, beef, chicken, shrimp, and squid. I also appreciate all the bean sprouts in there. HK milktea and soup were good, cannot complain. The fishballs were disappointing. It wasn't a good curry for fishballs, and while the portion was big, the bottom laid potatoes wedges. This wasn't worth $7. There are better choices around for lunch, unless your stomach is feeling really stubborn for some HK diner food. read more

Taken there by a Chinese as one of his favorites. They had a few unique items, but meh.... it was okay, but nothing special. There are so many Asian options in the area. Nothing screamed "I've got to come back for more!" (unless of course, my friend invites me again.) The service was good, and my friend noted the Portuguese influence on the dish he ordered (a chicken dish). We came for lunch on a weekend a couple of weeks back and it was still soft opening. Food was standard and wasn't anything amazing. One major concern was every dish was dirty as in left over food stuck on it, soap, and everything else you should not see on a clean dish for the next customer. I give it two star hoping this 'local cafe' will make its turn for the better. In the meantime, there are plenty of other places ready to serve with better hygiene. read more

i haven't come here in a little over a year so i decided to visit again because i remember liking their food. to my surprise, the environment has totally changed and their menu is WAY pricier. every meal is like $18+ and only the sizzling plates come with lemon tea or hk milk tea. even their snacks/appetizers are $16. they changed the environment from a quick cafe to a karaoke/party bar. also, they seemed to have changed their owner from cantonese to mandarin/china because all their waitresses only speak mandarin (but still understand cantonese). they used to sell japanese snacks and had cute decor but removed it to have more tables. they even added a stage with 2 mics but no one was performing at the moment (i assume that's for late nights). the positives are that their food is good, they close late (12:30 - 1:00 AM), and they have a lot of tables. i think it's good for a night out with friends to drink, but not for a regular dinner with no special occasion. overall i would choose another restaurant for hong kong style food because of the price. My boyfriend's family is always on a hunt for HK style food. And from what they were recommended by locals, this was the spot. Now, in no way am I a specialist in the HK cuisine. However, if it's good it's good you just know. Located in a busy plaza, where there's many eateries nearby, and shopping centers to kill time. Parking is available. The ambiance was nice. High ceiling, limited accents, giant tables to sit with family. Although, young kids may have a problem sitting there because the seating area was so big. The customer service was good. No complaints, nothing special. Food.. The food here was hit or miss. 1. Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings: Bland. The salt and pepper didn't even stick to the chicken. Not recommended. 2. Black Bean Clams: Disgusting. Not properly washed. You can taste the sand in them. 3. Wonton Noodle Soup: Bland. Needs a lot more salt and white pepper. The wonton itself didn't have anything in there. It was a dab of meat or whatever they put, and mostly wonton skin. 4. HK Style Lo Mein: Decent. Nothing too special. 5. Beef Stew Pan Fried Noodles: Probably my favorite dish here. Although, the noodles got real cooked as soon as it came out because the ratio of gravy over it was a little much. 6. Salty Fish & Chicken Fried Rice: I've had better else where.. Nothing that stood out to me. 7. Soup: The house soup was ok, the flavor was not bad at all. 8. Sweet and Sour Pork: Such huge cuts of pork, I honestly didn't even want to eat it. The place is understaffed and they play music so loud on the screens like it's a karaoke. The place is just too big tor the restaurant. The food is served slow and they are majorly understaffed. I would not recommend going to Local Cafe based on my most recent visit. Their afternoon tea is pricier than nearby competitors, such as A+ HK Cafe, Venus Cafe, and Cousin Cafe. Not only is it pricier, the window in which they offer it is also much narrower 3-5pm vs. 3-6pm (cousin cafe). I took my friend here at 4:55 and the waiter did not provide us the happy hour menu. When I asked about it, he said it ended. We both looked at our phones and the time was 4:56. There was no other table at the restaurant, so we were not sure why they had to do this. Love this place, come here every week. Food is authentic Cantonese, five star! This place has wide variety of beer selections, both domestic and import. Friday night has live music, two singers take turn on stage. If you like live music, you have to come on Friday night. Service is great, staffs have very good attitude, always smile and check on you. Unfortunately this hong kong style food quality is one of the worst in the Fremont area. My friend and I Order lunch special Hainan chicken rice with lemon tea $11.95 + a chinese sausages claypot rice The hainan chicken is over-cooked very dry and skin in dark yellow looked fresh off microwave .They gave lots of yellow rice that we have to take home. The claypot rice only has 1 sausage chop into small pieces plus few fatty pork. alot of left over rice and fat from the pork are being left behind, didnt want to take home. Service is at minimum, acceptable for asian restaurant .They offer free soup upon we ordered lunch meal, it was served in plastic cup, yes soup in small cup , i can still see big pink lip stick mark from last customer / very gross / luckily i found out before i touch it. I showed to Server and he just took it away said nothing. Overall 3 stars is the most i can offer . I wont go back till they improve the food quality. read more

But the food and service is the weakest point that he has to improve. I ordered 3 dishes, one ho fun soup, one bake rice and one chicken leg. All disappoint me a lot. First, the soup ho fun came with the chinese pickles, pork, fun and no soup. How can u taste the big bowl of fun without any soup provided? And non-taste favor which I have to add a lot of soy sauce and chilli sauce for tasting. 2nd, the chicken leg is an appetizer, why with a really thick dressing on it? It never taste like any Canton style, i doubt the chef is from North of China? They never know what Hong Kong style is, but whole store was advertised with Hong Kong life. Last, the bake rice, they present the dish to me after 10min order. Are you serious? Whichever cafe the server will notify you to wait at least 30 mins since they have to bake the rice. But they never did it. The sauce on top of the rice is not warm. And the drink lemon tea, you can only taste it sweet, and nothing is like the cafe in Hong Kong. I want to like this place. There are a number of Hong Kong style cafes in the Tri-City area, but their quality fluctuate. It's great to see a Hong Kong style cafe which is clean and not crammed. Food quality, however, is still uncertain... Out of the dishes we tried, the baked rice is the best. Drinks such as hot Hong Kong style milk tea, lemon ice tea and iced horlick are great. The spam and egg sandwich and the satay beef ramen soup are somewhat disappointed. The lunch special of sizziling black pepper beef spaghetti is a big let-down, with too much black pepper and super-oily. I got sweaty and couldn't taste the beef for a while, even that was a cold Saturday! Services are actually better than average, as the servers show their appreciation of your business. But at times they could have forgotten some of the things you ordered, or take a long time to serve some items if they're not the most popular ones. Also, many of the decorations inside the cafe are in simplified Chinese characters. My hunch is that the owner may come from the Guangdong province just north of Hong Kong. Anyways the jook/congee itself is pretty tasty and I like mine pretty peppery so this was delish to me. Pork strips was marinated so was of decent taste too-nothing outstanding either. Their portions of egg and pork is generous, not like other places where they mince the crap out of it and occasionally you can see a small chunk or two. The pay dan/thousand year old egg tasted cheap to me though. The "egg whites" part of the egg tasted rubbery and the "yolk", the marinated inside tasted cheap. That's probably why they are willing to splurge and give so much out but to me...the egg is a huge part of the jook and it was meh to me.
