It was a Sunday morning, unlike other Sunday mornings. I had to take my kid for volunteer work. He had the times wrong. We were an hour early. I was irritated. So in a foul mood, I decided to feed the inner bear. The bear entered Lorene's. It was popping. There were many riders in there, ready to trek out on their motorcycles. I was greeted promptly, and sat immediately. The coffee was good, and strong. The server was on point. We ordered the Meat Lover's Skillet, and the Cinnamon Roll combo. I didn't expect what I received. Usually these skillets come out greasy, and heavy. This one was, dare I say, fresh? Very little grease was at the bottom of the skillet when I finished this up. Great flavor. The onion and peppers were crisp, and cooked in perfectly. The bear was satisfied, and went back to sleep. I walked out full. I ate around 9am. It's 4:30 now, and I'm juuuuust starting to feel peckish. The bear gives it two thumbs up. read more

This is your standard greasy spoon breakfast fare in a country-homestyle setting. I go here often when I'm in the area for home-cooked skillets. I particularly like thebiscuits and gravy, the thin-sliced potatoes and when the waitresses call you "hon". The tab is cheap and Lorene's work wonders for a hangover. Unfortunately a homeless woman walked in during the middle of our meal & came straight to our table asking us for our food & money, she was cursing at the staff when they asked her to leave & she smelled of strong alcohol, this completely ruined my meal. This is another restaurant that I frequent with the family or friends. Restaurant has a little boutique shop inside. There is a bar & booth seating on one side and table & chairs seating on the other. Service is great. Never a long wait. Friendly staff. Food comes in fairly quick. I can come here during my lunch hour with a friend and has time to spare for a short talk. My husband loves to get their Good Earth Sandwich. He is over the moon with this sandwich! I usually order their corned beef hash here. The only restaurant in town I know of to get them. Love it with sunny side up eggs and hash browns! Yum!!! I love Lorenes. My friend Rod and I go there every time we get to Bakersfield. The staff is excellent and the food so yummy. Nothing fancy, just good food. This downtown diner filled with country-style decor is a little out-dated, but it adds to the home cooking feel. I don't think a lot of locals know about this place because my party of 3 arrived at 7-7:30am on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Even as we ate, very few other parties trickled in and I don't believe it was due to the food. I ordered corned beef hash which came with a choice of hash towns or country fries and a choice of biscuits and gravy or toast...a lot of decent food at a great price. Bf got a meat lovers skillet which he did not finish because it was heaping with food and Dad got a short stack of pancakes with some various breakfast sides, which he also didn't finish! Overall, a little run down with the bus station across the parking lot (that means people hitting you up for change when you arrive and leave, but they can't control that), but a nice little hole in the wall diner for some comfort breakfast food! She kept our cups full throughout our visit. Food - The food was good. The cook knows how to nail the temperatures. The steak was medium rare and the eggs were over-easy. The one thing I felt was lacking a little was seasoning. We had asked for salsa, so I added a little to my steak and problem solved! The salsa was delicious. My wife used it on her omelet, which she loved; while I ended up adding it to my eggs and potatoes as well...it was yum! Also, the croutons on the salad were fresh and homemade! I had the fish and chips and it was served with a generous portion of the steak fries which were excellent. The fish was served with cocktail sauce. First time I was ever given cocktail sauce with fish and chips. I also think its homemade. The garlic bread was also toasted on both sides! So delicious! This is a 2 star based on the order i placed which was the pigs in a blanket. Normally restaurants will give you 2 sausages in one pancake. This was not the case here and i was given a very small serving of syrup. I had to ask for syrup 3 times. The did not lack in giving you butter but that is to make up for pancakes not having enough of the classic buttermilk taste. The coffee was weak i basically drank flavored water. I ate at Lorene's yesterday for the first time. I really wanted to like the place. I've just moved to the downtown area and I walked over there for breakfast. The service was OK, just not real friendly. I ordered a simple breakfast, a couple poached eggs and the home fries. I specifically asked for the eggs soft poached. They were hard. For the home fries the potatoes weren't very brown, but the bell pepper was burnt. Not good. It was a real disappointment. read more

On our way to Sequoia, we stopped here looking for a breakfast place, vegetarian and with as little sodium possible in the food to accommodate my husband's diet. The place is neat and the staff is very friendly. They told us they make their own hash browns and were able to serve us salt-free hash browns which were delicious. I got the corned beef hash and eggs and the hash was from a can (confirmed by the waitress) and I'm pretty sure the eggs were from a carton. My husband had noodles with beef and gravy and it was super bland. My daughter got catfish with canned green beans, might have been previously frozen fries and fish. Even the cornbread was bland. I would have expected more for $9+ meals. The good service is why we didn't complain but I doubt we'll return. read more

One of those awesome greasy spoons where the waitresses call you "hun" and the cushy booths are super comfortable. They have the most amazing chili verde, but if you can't handle it spicy, you may want to order something else. I always get the chili verse skillet for breakfast and would venture to say it's the best in town. The biscuits and gravy are fluffy and thick and creamy, not that watered down like some other restaurants. Whether you come in for breakfast or lunch, you can't go wrong! read more
