This is one of my go-to hangout spots. Mark is super friendly and nice. My favorite used to be the Chicken Pesto sandwich but recently I've been OBSESSED with the Buffalo Chicken sandwich. On my vegetarian days, I like to order the Veggielicious. Eat that one quickly tho, it gets pretty soggy because of the water content from the vegetables. That's expected. I kept hearing good things about this place from social media and friends. I finally decided to try it because it's close to where I go pay rent and it was amazing! At first I thought it was going to be just like any other sandwich spot, but what sets them apart are their unique spreads, and the sandwich doesn't turn into a soggy mess. I typically go with the risky business (nothing risky about this pick) pastrami, crab and bacon with Avacado on a Dutch crunch. The owner I believe or GM that typically takes orders with the Giants hat knows his customers and can even quickly remember who you are over the phone. Since the downhill trend of Ike's, been looking for good sandwich places in SF. Lou's Cafe popped on the radar. Had the Veggie-licious ~$9.50 - eggplant, mushrooms, avocado, roasted pepers, alfalfe sprouts, provolone. Had it with Dutch Crunch bread. Tasted really fresh, good combination of all the ingredients, with the Dutch bread probably being the best part of the sandwich. Would've wanted to eat another sandwich but had many more things planned to eat later that day so couldn't go crazy here. Will probably try the LLB Special or Italian next time. Went during lunch time so was a bit of a line as expected, but quickly died down soon after I ordered. Place was spacious, lots of seating, couldn't complain. Overall, not quite what Ike's used to be, but definitely better than what it is now. From the street this place looks like a small shop but do not let the sign outside fool you this place is pretty spacious and more of a modern touch inside. They have a large variety of sandwiches on their menu and plenty of flexibility with substituting any options. As a first timer I went with something already on the menu a Hot Pastrami and my friend ordered a Roma (turkey bacon avocado pesto and the works). We shared sandwiches so we could both taste because sandwiches are our all time favorite food, and it was Delicious! They toast the bread (DUTCH CRUNCH-can't go wrong with Dutch crunch, sold me on this establishment). It's funny how I'm an SF native and have not tried Lou's until this past weekend. I don't normally go out of my way to get sandwiches but I think Lou's has changed my mind about that. I got the Ami-cado on Dutch crunch with everything. It was so good! I wish I had asked to add the jalapeño sauce as well Bc I am a huge spice fan. I did some Yelp research afterwards and noticed that the risky bizness is also super popular so I'll have to go back and try that as well. The Crab Melt is definitely my favorite sandwich on the menu. I'm usually not a fan of spicy things, but the jalepeño spread? Absolutely delicious! Their sammies and menu concept are similar in style to Ike's. Their new location has capitalized on all the uncontrollable downsides their sister shop on Geary has. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only person who was annoyed by the cash register being literally feet from the door, creating an instant line and a road block for people trying to get out. The chips are also visible before you order, instead of hiding on the other side of the counter, and there is more parking, seating, and space at the Taraval location. Diggin' the cheerful orange walls too! I've never met a sandwich I didn't like here. Honestly, just order whatever strikes your fancy from their giant menu, and you won't be disappointed. But if you're still having trouble, here are some of my favorites: 1) Risky Business 2) Hot Pastrami 3) Lou-Ben 4) Ami-Cado The first time I was here, they forgot to switch my requested bread to dutch crunch, and the second time, they ran out of torpedo bread for my breakfast omelette sandwich, but their sandwiches are so yummy that all is forgiven. Lou's, Lou's, Lou's, what have you done to me? Lou's Cafe has been a long time favorite of mine. I've been going to the Richmond District location on 14th and Geary for as long as I can remember when I lived there, but as of a year and a half ago, I moved to the Sunset District and was not able to go there as much. Now that there's a Lou's Cafe in the Sunset District, I find myself going often once again. What can I say, this place is addictive. May I even say some of the best sandwiches in the city are made here? I think so. Easily. This spot has a very diverse menu. I'm talking 30+ sandwiches to chose from, and every single one is delicious. You really can't go wrong with any selection and could end up coming here for months and still not trying all that they have to offer. My personal favorite is the BBQ Chicken sandwich. While it may be a bit saucy and can get your hands sticky, it's well worth it. Another personal favorite is Roma's Club. That's the one I got on my last visit (see the picture I took). It's absolutely crisp, fresh and the flavor is top notch. Another thing that's so great about Lou's is the stamp cards they offer. By no means an original trend, but considering this place is already addictive, there's no doubt you'll eventually reach a free sandwich. Pro tip: NEVER turn down the jalapeño sauce. I never went to the Lou's Cafe at the Geary location, but this new one on Taravel sure as hell caught my tiny eyes. My mother and I were first timers, so we took our time scanning the menu. I must say though, the girl working the cashier wasn't the friendliest. She didn't give us a bad attitude, but she had no smiles and looked like she hated her job with all her might. -Crab Melt w/ everything : Imitation snow crab salad, avocado, american cheese, Lou's special sauce, on a dutch crunch roll Man oh man, this was GOOOOD. The sauces mixed in with the avocado and melted cheese was just AMAZING. However, I think that they were a little bit stingy on the crab and the avocado. Very thin layer of crab salad and 2 pieces of avocado just right in the middle. -Turkey Cranberry w/ no pickles : Turkey, swiss cheese, cranberry, Lou's special sauce, on a sour dough roll I decided to switch to a dutch crunch roll because sour dough makes me cringe. They were really nice about it, no extra charges or anything. This was extremely delicious, but the person who made this sandwich put most of the sauce in the middle, so the first few bites were HELLA sweet. I would open the sandwich up and spread the cranberry evenly next time I get this. -Chicken Apple Sausage Sammie : Chicken apple sausage, american cheese, egg, hash browns, lou's special sauce, on a ciabatta A really good breakfast sandwich. My mom and I are big fans of chicken apple sausages so this was really good. She did need to add some salt and pepper to the hash brown and eggs though because they were pretty bland.
