I was raised in San Antonio and went off after college and had a 20-year military career. I'm glad I am back for many reasons, but one definitely is a Luby's visit every couple of months. While I have gone to various, to include some in Austin, I especially wanted to take the time and yelp my recent visit to the #8 location in San Antonio. While the food choices are always excellent and plenty to select from, the difference this visit made was the staff. Everyone seems to have a genuine passion for what they do and ensuring customer satisfaction. Of particular note was our waitress - Carmen. She was so attentive to ensure we had everything we needed. And prior to departure, she fixed me up a to go tea. I watched her as she went from area to area helping everyone. I am a firm believer that it is the staff that makes the place. It makes people keep coming back. And finally, thank you Luby's for acknowledging my service to the country and giving me a 10% discount. read more

We had 6 kids in our family and this was the only place we felt comfortable going to for special occasions. I just went back last week to Texas and ate at this Luby's. It was amazing, like I remember, except the service has improved. My waiter was on it. He made sure we had what we needed. I had the fried fish with tartar sauce and fried okra. It was delicious. I think this Luby's is the best I had in this city. I had lunch and it took about 15 minutes to get my order. They had one cashier during lunch time and that is not acceptable. Their turkey and dressing was pretty good and well seasoned. Turkey was moist and dressing was well cooked. I didn't have my water filled not once during lunch. I have been here a couple times before but today it was just a mess. First off the employees were very rude the only nice one was the server other than that they were being snarky. The soda machines were down and instead of having a sign or telling people in advance they watched as people tried to get soda from a non functioning machine telling them last minute that it was broken. read more

On Christmas Day 2011, I ordered a "fish plate," which consisted of about 2 measly ounces of fish, a few tiny scoops of rice, a tiny "roll" and eggplant. The total? EIGHT SOMETHING DOLLARS. Arrived and it was dead probably because they were only accepting cash. Left to the ATM to pull out cash. I was having a fresh, cold salad that I usually get from here. Instead, I was greeted with brown, wilted, sad looking salad. They were all lined up as if any of them were edible. I informed the worker at the salad area that all those were bad and instead of disposing of them, she just left them and got me a new one, which looked ok at the top. Found the only clean booth in the back area by restrooms, it was hot and muggy and unpleasant back there. I dug into my salad and not only was it so filled with water that the dressing slid right off, but underneath the good lettuce was more brown, bad salad. I asked my waitress for a refund as it was inedible. She came back stating the system's were down and would not be able to provide me a refund. I tried to eat my meal but it was cold and inedible. My son's chicken was hard and felt as if it had been sitting for quite a while. I asked to speak to manager and he offered me a credit. I told him I'd rather not ever go back. He left to get me a credit and came back with my cash saying it's ok, I don't need to come back. Such a sad Sunday lunch. read more

I wish I could give this less than one star. I came with my family for breakfast- and our food was cold and stale. They started putting out jello and dessert at 9am- and my son asked for some. They then came and said that we had to pay for it because it was a lunch item. At 9am? Whatever. The pie as grabbed was crusty- obviously from the day before. My son ate the pancakes- and they made him very ill. He vomited them back up at the table before we even got a chance to eat. I went up to ask the people at the buffet a question- they told me the heat aspect of the buffet was broken- and that's why the food was so bad. Although an older location, the atmosphere is good and relaxing. There is no hustle and bustle that can be nerve grating as other places. You can sit and enjoy a quiet lunch or dinner with your family and friends. They have a special events room, and families come together to celebreaye. Food was warm and big serving. Only down side, the servers in the food line are not so helpful, they get so focus on their station. They ignore what is going on around them and they don't actually know the names of each item. It can be disappointing and frustrating when you don't visit often enough to know the names. read more
