I've know about this restaurant for years. Finally decided to give it a try. Parking is a little tight and it gets full. When you go in they take your name down. There's a bar you can have a drink. The place is older but you feel like you're at your grammas house. We only waited about 20 minutes. There's also TV's all over you can watch they game. So there's only a few options on the menu but I actually really liked that. The soup they had was really good and hardy. They serve it to you in a big bowl and you serve yourself. You almost feel like you are at home. With the soup comes warm bread and butter. Then you get a small salad. After that you get your dinner. Comes with pasta and vegetables. Go hungry it is so much food. The food is good but you can not beat the price. The customer service is good and there was a good flow to the dinner. I've been to Mac's on several occasions and this last time was my best and fastest experience yet. Knowing when to arrive is the key to success as they have so many people ready and willing to wait for their "better than home cooking", it's crazy. If you leave hungry, it's your own fault. The portions are large, their bread is excellent. The soup is better than any minestrone I've ever had. The prime rib is juicy, tender and filled with flavor. The servers bust their butts to make sure they get things to you quickly and as friendly as humanly possible. Small but cute place that's by itself and not really surrounded by much else. Close off the freeway. Horrible, super small and tight parking lot. The place looks old/not updated and a rad run down - but adds personality and uniqueness to it. Came at 5p on a Saturday night. A lot of people were waiting but for two people we waited ~20 mins after being told it would be ~45. Full meals a bread, salad, soup and entree. Bread was good, warm with soft center and crispy on the outside. The butter was so good too. Soup was super good, hearty, not super salty. Salad was crisp and wasn't drenched with dressing. Prime rib was served with veggies and pasta. The prime rib was good quality and tasty. Pasta was good and had a meat sauce. The veggies were a bit over cooked but still good. Overall, we will for sure be back. Friendly and quick service. Full meals for less than $50 is a freakin deal for two people, that's what you'd barely pay for one at house of prime rib. read more

This is basically the old Bertolas. If you read up on their website you'll see exactly what I mean, and the food is just like I remember at Bertola's. Fantastic minestrone, great steaks and prime rib. Bring cash and be prepared to wait on the weekends because there's no reservations taken, but it goes pretty quick. It's a fun place to hang out while you're waiting to get a table. Even if you have no idea what Bertola's is or was, I would recommend checking this place out just because it's so classic old school Italian/American. I love to try Restaurants that have been around a while, that have some connection to the founders, and that have a story. Mac's Old House fits the bill in spades. Yes, there was a Mac, 98 years ago he built a house, he opened a bar, sold the house and a restaurant bloomed - 40 years ago. I enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the service. From their website: "The original owner, Floyd "Mac" McKinney, built this old house with his father in 1925. While Mac was still living there, he converted part of his home into a bar. He opened it on St. Patrick's Day in 1956. 17 years after he opened, he sold it and retired. Mac eventually built the small house that is behind the restaurant and lived there until he died in 1994. 10 years (and a few owners) later, Gary bought the building and opened it on August 5th, 1983. Mac would still come in almost every day for a cocktail and dinner, and he would always sit at the same exact table. Today, his picture and obituary hang above that very spot." 1925 was the year Mac opened a bar in his house. In Antioch, the vision of Antioch in 1925 with a guy welcoming folks into his house/bar - how cool is that? With an even dozen choices, the menu somehow fits the vibe. No neon lights, no truffle infused fries, no avocado toast, Its a step back in time. A time when modern culinary pretensions are laid aside. Folks ensconced at the bar, with inexpensive mixed drinks priced by the number of shots of booze, single $3.50, double $4.00 and triple $4.50. No $20.00 designer cocktails available. The food is solidly basic and was enjoyable. The Extra Cut Prime Rib was prepared medium rare and is served with au jus on request and horse radish that would take the hair off a hog. It was a tasty big slice. Salad with Italian dressing - asking for the dressing on the side was a mistake, missing the fresh ground pepper applied in the kitchen. The soup was a basic minestrone and served in a large bowl for each to scoop out what they desire. I liked it. Bread was warm and fresh, served with butter patties. Ok, where do I start. I've driven by this place many times and seen a lot of people outside waiting. So tonight, we gave it a shot. Please don't take this the wrong way, but do people have taste buds up here? So this place is known for their prime rib. Ok, so my wife and kids order the prime rib medium. Everything was great till we got our food. I ordered the fish (red snapper), which was really good, but was not cooked all the way. My kids' and wife's "prime rib" comes out. As my wife "tries to cut my kids steak... lol "tries." omg it was like cutting a prime rib that was cooked in a microwave. It was so hard, and they couldn't even chew the meat. No flavor, extremely bland. The only thing good on that plate was the veggies. I don't see what the hype is about this place. I saw a person next to us almost lost their knife cutting the steak. This can be a fun place to eat and has great prices, but the wait can be a while. Tonight we put our name in and the wait was short...at least for everyone but us. We waited as people that came after us were getting seated. We finally asked the guy after 45 minutes where we were on the list, he found us a page back with all the crossed out name. He just said oh you're the next table for 3. Still more people were getting seated, so we asked again, now an hour after we put our name in. He was bussing a 4 top table, and we asked if we could sit there. He very curtly told us these are for parties of 4 or more. You are a party of 3, we sit you at a table for 2 and add a chair, but there are no extra chairs so you'll have to wait. We said you are seating people that got here 15 minutes ago, we've been waiting an hour. Based on your logic you will never seat us, to which he said "bye then!" We asked to speak with a manager and were told, "we really don't have a manager" Moral of the story, round up! Never tell them you are a party of 3 or 5 or you'll wait 2-3 times longer than everyone else. read more

Whoooaaa!!! (REWIND). Soooo um....... who in the fluff told y'all that this ish was good?! Like, really though! I wanna know. WHO said it was good??? Not her fault of course, but I just can't believe that people keep coming back to eat here. "Maybe we just came on a bad day". I'll probably never know because I'm not planning on coming back. For what it's worth; the drinks were pretty good, the prices were cheap, and the soup was decent. The soup was the only thing that tasted okay at that table, and it was average at BEST. First: the atmosphere was totally unwelcoming. We got the unnecessary "stare down" from the old ass regulars at the bar when we first walked in. That was our first clue, but we still proceeded to have dinner there. We sat down and it took a while for our server to get to us. To her credit, it looked like she was the only one manning the place at the time. We finally were able to order and we each got a margarita, the calamari steak, and the Cajun red snapper. So, you know how restaurants usually like to build up to the entree with bread, salad, soup and appetizers? Welp, I'm gonna call this a build DOWN. Everything tasted progressively worse as it built DOWN to the entree. The bread wasn't fresh and it was delivered room temperature with rock hard butter that they expected us to actually try and spread. It's just bread, so I'll actually give that a pass. But that soup though! I swear they opened a can of spaghetti-o's and poured it in our bowls. That was strike 1. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything exceptional. It needed some salt in it too, but at least it was edible. They brought out the salad and I just kind of laughed. So, you decide to douse a couple pieces of lettuce in Italian dressing and top it with ONE small piece of salami, and you wanna call that an "Italian salad".......????? Strike 2!!! The lettuce didn't appear to be very fresh either. Honestly, we should have probably asked for new ones but we were so damn hungry that we just ate them. But the final strike for me, was the actual entree. I swear I thought that this was kid's play food. You know, that fake food that comes with those kiddie play kitchens? It didn't even look real. I had to poke it with my fork for proof. I thought we were getting punk'd or something. But, nope. This was dinner. Rubbery pasta shells topped with dry pasta sauce and flavorless, over-boiled vegetables. To make things worse, it had clearly been sitting there for a while because it was damn near cold. The Cajun red snapper and the calamari steak were both bland and under fried. We couldn't even finish our meal y'all! Our server came back and asked us if we wanted to-go boxes. I don't think I've ever said "no" so fast in my entire life. There was no way in hell that I was gonna even attempt to try and eat this again the next day. Luckily the bill wasn't too much (it's cash only by the way... go figure!), but just like the saying goes "you get what you pay for". I love calamari, but was disappointed when I got a piece of chewy, no flavor piece of white something in the shape of a square? Minestrone soup isn't bad, but to have this as the one and only, all the time, gets boring. I know people that love this place, so again just my opinion. I think that they should advertise more that they only take cash. I feel like this is a scam to get money out of people. There just happens to be an ATM machine there that I'm sure they are Making money from. A BIG sign on the front door should be there and they should also tell people that call. We arrived around 4:30 pm. 4 people in our party. Everyone ordered a different dinner. My husband had a beer and a double on the rocks, my offspring enjoyed 2 root beers. (These details matter because of the over all price.) The root beers came in ice cold bottles. Our kids really loved that. We play a "No phone" game when ever we go out to eat, which was not hard because of all the servings. Round 1- Hot steamy bread with butter and minestrone soup placed right in the middle of the table. I served everyone at the table a bowl full. We ate it up like a bunch of backyard dogs. Then came the salad. Our youngest thought the salad dressing was a little too tangy, but none the less, we cleaned our plates. THEN came out the main coarse. Everyone's plate came with steamed veggies and pasta with red sauce. We all chose different protein~ Beef, Fish, Calamari & Cajun Calamari. We all got busy. Tasting from everyone else's plates. Again, any onlooker can see we eat like a bunch of hungry truckers on a long haul. The total- $81.00 and that's with the beer and double on the rocks!!! Ambiance- Hanging out in Ma's kitchen. Come in what your wearing. Grab a cold one and just kick back. Service- Excellent. We have declared this a new favorite place and I have already began telling my friends! Mac's has a nearly cult-like following. Maybe I just haven't had enough kool-aid but it fell short. The food was mediocre at very best, on top of the server wiping out soup bowls with the very dirty dish towel hanging from her belt before serving soup and the incredibly lackluster vibes, this just didn't live up to the hype for me. Excellent food but be careful if you are a vegetarian as the minestrone soup has meat in it as well as the sauce, and the salad comes with a slice of salami on it. Due to its popularity, many wait outside until called and the smokers seem to congregate at the front door. I was raised on coming here on the weekends with my grandparents while I was in Oakley visiting. After years and years of eating here, I have continued the tradition by bringing my kids here since being in my womb. Everything is great here, staring with the drinks, the staff, and the food. The hot bread with warm butter and soup hits the spot every single time.. never a disappointment. My favorite is the prime rib and vegetables.
