First things first:Mac's Old House is not a 5 star restaurant. Don't come in expecting a headwaiter and linen napkins. I give Mac's 5 stars because they are exactly what they aim to achieve and deliver every time. We get the prime rib, pasta or fish most times. Comes with soup or salad and some bread. Lots of people go for the crazy inexpensive drinks and find out the food is very good, too. Nice, local staff. Even a gold star mom. Went there this weekend on the recommendation of a friend (and so did not pre-check yelp). Luckily, we brought cash, since this establishment is CASH-ONLY! The place was packed, but there was no wait when we arrived. We were seated quickly - at a table in line with the wall dividing the two front rooms that are just off the bar. And while I usually don't like to be seated in a thoroughfare, that evening I was glad to be seated there lest my chair back up to another patron's chair, as the tables are packed tightly in there. The menu is simple which makes for easy decision making and reasonably priced which makes it very large family friendly. There were 3 tables of 8 amongst the two small rooms we were straddled. For dinner, I had their 10oz ribeye. (By-the-by, it doesn't come in any other size.) My mate had the red snapper - Cajun-style, which comes with a $1 up charge. (Maintaining their mode of simplicity, there weren't any other seafood offerings on the menu.) ALL DINNERS COME WITH: Soup (served first and family style), Salad: served individually, Italian-style (has a slice of salami), & heavily dressed, Bread: fresh, warm and apportioned according to party size (to get more costs $1) Each meal comes with pasta (which I assume you hold get with no sauce & veggies (which I imagine you could get with no butter, salt or pepper). My steak, served very-well, rather than the requested medium-well, had a lot of fat on it and edges were charred. Since I was mostly full from the accoutrements, and a rush had come in behind us, I ate what I could rather than wait for another to be prepared. Tasting of butter (or fat) and salt & pepper, it was good enough for leftovers. Though the fish was nicely prepared, the mate said you could skip the Cajun, which would probably revert the preparation to just butter, salt and pepper. Salad drenched in dressing, almost soupy. Also when I asked if the minestrone soup was made with veggie broth(like it should be, it's typically a vegetarian soup) she then said "no there's meat in there" then snatched it away without saying a word while I was still talking. Very disipointed with the additude and service of the employees. And when there was an issue brought to there attention all we got was that's just the way it is. Also when we ask for them to cook the veggies skittle more so our aunt who couldn't chew them could eat them they responded with that's as soft as we could get them. Mac's Old House is a gem! We were on travel for work, and the clerk at the Best Western recommended it. Incredible minestrone soup and fresh hot bread for only 6.95 for lunch! I had the cajun chicken lunch which came with the awesome soup, a moist piece of chicken with a spicy crunchy crust, and perfectly cooked veggies. Staff were welcoming even though we walked in at 2:15, fifteen minutes before they close for the afternoon. Do go!!! I came late on a week night and it was a full house and there was only one waitress working so it took an awful amount of time to get food and the dinning room floors were filthy and had food all over them. The restaurant was set up in an old house cute idea but I felt like I was in the backwoods. I felt like the courses were a joke because they were not set up well. One of the courses was bean soup came out cold and wasn't good. Salad course not memorable. Spaghetti course not memorable. So with all these mixed reviews... I guess I am going to have to chime in. My family has been coming to Mac's for years... and here is the skinny: the menu is limited, often the prime rib is thin and overcooked (and not always the best cuts) BUT the drinks are flowing, the crowd is usually upbeat and fun and the food is cheap and good for what you pay. very popular place in a small town... the dinner time opens at 5pm. My wife and i arrived at 445pm, and already there are 10+ ppl waiting outside. Then a nice young man told me that i need to put myself on the waiting list inside... so I entered the door and noticed a lot more people waiting inside including many at the bar. we promptly put ourselves on the waiting list, and i think there were10 groups before us, including a huge party of 18... after 5pm, they started seating guests table by table, i think we were seated at around 515pm since it's a pretty big place with about 20 tables... Immediatley caught our attentions are the price for the 3 Course Prime Rib dinners... $13.95 for regular Prime Rib Dinner, and $19.95 for extra cut Prime Rib Dinner... both come with a lot of bread, soup, salad, some pasta, and steamed veggies. it easily 50% cheaper than most prime rib restaurants AND with more to eat... Furthermore, the bread/salad/soup all tasted great, and we were already planning when should we return again... Alas, then the prime ribs arrived... the veggie is OK (steamed veggie is steamed veggie), and I like the pasta (with meat sauce) (actually no potatoes), and the prime ribs looked pinkishly good (we both ordered medium rare). However, after a couple of bites, we first noticed there are no to little flavor. we both end up dashed a lot of salt, and i added a lot of horse radish, but i miss the Prime Rib with gravy.... And to make things worse, both pieces are not very tender at all. Mine is worse since it's an extra thick cut. I have tasted many prime rib before, and sorry to say I have never had prime ribs this hard, let alone ones that are supposed to be medium rare... And I never had to "push myself" to finish my plate of Prime Rib... the bill was beautiful, $50 total including drinks and tips. I hope this is just a one time thing that their Prime Ribs are better than this, But chances are we probably wouldn't drive 1 hour again to Antioch to try it out again... read more
