Never recommend this restaurant at all. I ordered Sushi Sashimi Combo and Teriyaki Salmon. They raised the price and raw fishes are smaller than other restaurants. They cannot make sushi rice at all and cooked vegetable is floating in the fluid like soup in the container. Basically, Chinese chefs and the owner of this restaurant opened and have been operating. They do not know how to make foods at all. Not Good at all. Better to go to Sariku Sushi & Hong Kong Noodle Restaurant located Lexington Avenue and 30th Street. It is two blocks from Maguro. I was very impressed with this tiny sushi place near my apartment. I came here with three friends and we tried a variety of rolls and pieces. I saw that one of the rolls on the menu had mango in it and asked if I could have a salmon mango avocado roll--they were happy to accommodate. I also tried the yellowtail scallion avocado roll, the Third Avenue roll (spicy white tuna, avocado & crunch inside, topped with lobster salad & tobiko), the Golden Dragon roll, and pieces of mackerel, fluke, and white tuna. The pieces were really great--next time I will definitely order more and I also enjoyed all of the rolls. The service was very sweet and friendly. They gave us a yummy free appetizer. My husband works right down the street from this sushi place, so we thought we'd check it out. We actually came here with my brother, his wife, and their 1-year-old baby. It's always interesting to see how restaurants react to having a baby, and this restaurant should get 5 stars for their excellent service! Even though the place is small, they had a booster seat for the baby, and they immediately brought out edamame and chopsticks for her. Did I mention that the baby loves Japanese food? We ordered a huge selection of sushi, hand rolls, and even a chicken dish, as well as hot sake. The hot sake was not that great, but the rest of the meal was excellent. The edamame was hot and salty, just the way I like it. We tried a lot of the basic rolls - California roll, spicy tuna avacado, yellowtail with jalepeno and scallion, salmon, and spider roll. All were great. They were very friendly and efficient. The good was great and we will definitely be back. The only reason the place got only stars instead of 5 is because it's super tiny and a little cramped. When we first walked in, it smelled a little fishy which I think is just because it was a hot August day with a restaurant packed full of people. read more

Medium-quality sushi but good for the price, specifically lunch specials: $8.95 for 2 rolls, $11.95 for 3 rolls, $13 for chirashi (plate of various fish and side of rice). Wouldn't make the trek here but if you're in the area on a lunch break, not bad. I recommend going with the rolls over the sashimi, chirashi or nigiri because the mediocre quality fish. When you get rolls, there is other stuff (more rice, veggies, sauces) to cover up the lack of freshness. I lived in Japan and ate the best fish in the world, ranging from Hiroshima in the south up to Hokkaido in the north. So that's where my sushi review is coming from, slowly trying every spot in New York. Will keep you posted on what I find. Fish tastes a few days old. Unagi's (bbq eel) texture is off - too mushy. Tuna roll and salmon roll are good, just douse it in soy sauce/ wasabi. As sad as it is, the fish isn't the worst part. The music is horrid. Like someone with terrible taste in music from the late 80's-early 90's with an old mixed tape on repeat. Mostly pop and R&B, no classics. Just bad. A lot of Asian places have bad music, but this is pretty epically bad. read more

I am a return customer to Maguro for the past year and a half and had no complaints till now. I just ordered off seamless and the delivery came on time - a main reason why I order from them. I open my bag to see that there are 2 extra rolls in my bag! Great, what a lovely surprise! However, none of the sushi was fresh. the 2 spicy tunas i did get were very fishy - one piece did have leftover bones in it. The two extra rolls were salmon avocado and California - both were abnormally warm, which wasn't a pleasant experience. The only thing i got that was good as always was the house salad. This won't ruin my relationship with Maguro just yet... I'll be back for a hopefully better experience. read more

The food was good for the price but the service was horrible. We did not get a proper greeting and I had to ask to refill my tea. I was there around 1:30pm and there was only two other tables with customers. The waiter stood by the register several times doing nothing. When she came by and gave us our food, I asked her to refill my tea. She walked away without acknowledging me. I thought she did not hear me because two minutes later I saw her by the register. And when I got her attention and asked for tea, with attitude, she told me to hold on. I love sushi but I love being serviced more. This is not my type of store. The only "thank you" we got was when we were leaving of the store and it was a pretty sarcastic thank you. I am not hard to please. When it comes to mediocre restaurants, I do lower my expectations. Solid sushi spot that delivers to Alphabet City. The pork gyoza are were my least favorite item, they reminded me more of Chinese pork dumplings than anything else. The salmon tartar was very tasty. It comes drizzled with a light mayo, scallion, avocado. and tobiko. But this isn't the menu description of the dish, which mentions a quail egg. I can take or leave the egg, and I prefer what was delivered to what was described, but it's just a note. I also ordered the tiger roll and spicy scallop roll. I thought the scallop roll could have used more spice, but the tiger roll was a nice combination of fresh salmon, tuna, eel, avocado, and tobiko. Maguro has been around for a couple of years now. I've eaten there twice and ordered through Seamless a few times through the years. Showing up early is best when you come to Maguro because of small size of their dining room. What was the most memorable about the sit down meals is that the bento boxes are an excellent size and at a very reasonable price. For lunch, it's even better and $9 gets you any kind of bento box combination you want. Personally, I like maki rolls and hand rolls, and what is exceptional here is the quantity of fish in each roll. You will notice more fish and less rice, a huge plus. Generally, maki rolls here are about 50 cents cheaper than their neighborhood competition. It's also a few bucks cheaper for bento boxes. Avoid the special rolls as there about the same price as other restaurants in the neighborhood. As for sushi, sashimi, and cooked food entrees, these also tend to be in line with other restaurants in the neighborhood. Based on food quality alone, Maguro deserves a visit. Based on price, for maki rolls and bento boxes, it's a must visit! read more

Some of the presentation was a bit sloppy but it's a simple roll for the lunch special-- can't hold that against them. Got seaweed salad as an appetizer and they brought me this huuge bowl of it. I hadn't gotten through half of it by the time my food came out. My sis got the bento box which was a really good deal. Couldn't believe how much food it comes with. I tried her beef negimaki, which was perfect. Practically melted in my mouth. A server stood in the dining area the whole time, clearing dishes off tables and refilling drinks right away. I had a bit of a different experience here because the waitress misheard our green tea tempura ice cream order as vanilla and she ended up giving us the green tea tempura ice cream for free in addition to the vanilla one. That was a nice freebie, in addition to a free miscellaneous dish that seemed to be cobbled together from sushi ingredients that she brought early in the meal as an appetizer. So, for these 2 freebies and the relatively attentive waitress = good service and 1 additional star. The food was okay, nothing memorable, but at least pretty good. I wish Yelp would let me give half stars! Maguro gets a 3.5 from me. Came here during the horrible heat wave 2 weeks ago with some girl friends. We had a reservation but still waited about 10-15 minutes when we got there. It's a small place, maybe 8 tables, tops, so I could see how it would get backed up pretty quickly. I think also the AC wasn't working, or just that people kept going in and out of the door, so the place itself wasn't very cool. We definitely took a long time to cool down after walking here in the 90 degree heat. The food itself is pretty good. They gave us a free salad when we sat down that was maybe crab and julienned cucumbers. Either way, it was pretty yummy. We each split an edamame app and got 2 rolls each. I asked how spicy one of the rolls I wanted to get was and the waitress told me that she could tell the chef to tone down the spice for me, however, he did the opposite and made it EXTRA spicy. So the waitress told me when our food was coming out that my roll needed to be re-made. Womp womp. Luckily, they handled it pretty quickly. FYI.. if you're coming here and planning on drinking wine (and splitting it), a bottle of their house white is only $15, which beats paying for glasses separately. The wait staff was very kind. I would only come here for the lunch special, otherwise the sushi here is way overpriced (but what else can you expect from Manhattan?). With lunch special is $8.95 for 2 rolls or $11.95 for 3 rolls; otherwise a regular roll is about $5-$6 each. The downside is that the lunch special doesn't offer many great options (lots of vegetarian options, though). In terms of fish, you only get to choose between salmon and tuna (and their variants, e.g. mango tuna, salmon avocado, etc.). The upside is that the sushi pieces are huge! Each piece would take me 2 bites, otherwise my mouth would be full. The sushi was definitely very filling. I came in starved, got the 3 roll lunch special, and left stuffed. The following downside, though, is that quality is compromised with quantity. If you like generous chunks of fish, this is the place for you. For me, I prefer my sushi delicately cut into smaller pieces--it's how sushi should be. (I do appreciate the quantity of food that we're given, but I'd rather have them cut nicer into more bitable sizes...) Also, the rolls are not wrapped very neatly. Because the pieces are big and not wrapped well, they inevitably fall apart.
