Butter croissant tasted good, but wasn't as flaky as expected. Texture wise it was disappointing. The duck liver and pistachio pate en croute was delicious, a flavor explosion. The boar and pine nut pate en croute was less flavorful in comparison. The seasonal quiche with butternut squash was good, the crust was extremely flaky and slightly burnt. We walked by Maison Nico on a cool, drizzly day, and just had to try it. Fancy! Upon arrival, you'll find yourself waiting outside, and guests are called in one by one or by party. The staff is attentive, taking their time to walk you through the menu and address any questions you may have. I tried both the classic Butter Croissant and the seasonal gem, Pear Choux. 1. The Butter Croissant was simple, and satisfying. While it brought back fond memories of the croissants from Costco, which I adore, it didn't leave an exceptionally lasting impression. 2. The Seasonal Pear Choux was a delight! If anyone has discovered a neat way to eat this, please share! The explosion of flavors (metaphorically and literally) was definitely worth it. This place is elegant and beautiful. As soon as you walk in, you know that you're in a place where they take the look, taste, and quality of the food to that next level. We tried a few items. Choux chocolate. Flaky, crispy outer shell, and inside chilled chocolate cream. Perfect. Just eating one was difficult. But there were other items I wanted to taste. Brioche chocolate noisette. This was superb. It had a flaky texture, and the almond and hazelnut flavors were delightful. French flan. This is the reason we came to Maison Nico in the first place. It was really out of this world. This was so delicious that I want to come back just to have the flan. If you're not a fan of sweets (it happens), there were several paté available, and all looked beautiful. Excellent pastries flaky buttery Frenchie goodness. I tried the ham and cheese and was super happy with the flavor and creamy cheese and buttery texture. The aesthetic of the baked goods are excellent. Prices are very high compared to Paris or London or Seattle but worth it for the flavor - only complaint is 1) indoor seating area is cramped and badly laid out... The pastry at this place is amazing. I went with two French friends, and they both approved. We got a chocolate croissant, a Parisian flan, a duck pâté, and a croque monsieur and loved all. Just keep in mind that this place is on the pricier side. We paid $50 for these 4 items, but then again this is San Francisco. Can't compare with Paris prices. Next time I go I will get their plain croissant as they've won the Best Croissant in SF award for 2023. read more

Heard Maison Nico used to be a michelin star restaurant, and now it's a dreamy French bakery. They definitely have the most gorgeous golden croissants lined with brown ribbons in the city!! Chestnut croissant / Croissant aux marrons: came here just to try this one bc i love chestnut, but the chestnut flavor was so delicate - wish it was stronger. i was shocked how the croissant itself was so non-buttery and airy inside, almost resembling sourdough Ham & cheese croissant: recently i've been fiending for ham & cheese croissants after having arsicault's. the one here was filled with what tasted like turkey deli meat, strong gruyere cheese, and a mild creamy mushroom sauce. was overall great, but wouldn't crave it Overall, their croissants somehow felt healthy, but i prefer mine to be flakier - would definitely come back here to try their paté and non-croissant baked goods! read more

My friend recommended Maison Nico, she raved about their partisan flan and so I had to come try it for myself. The bakery is takeout only and you can also order ahead on their website. The interior is very very industrial with some touches of modern to it. Open kitchen where you can see the chefs at work, creating magic, I chatted with the owner while he helped me and he was so very friendly and humorous! I got the partisan flan per my friend's recommendation and it was everything and allll that! They also have a lot of other pastries include pate bread, brioche and more. Omg why isn't Maison Nico more popular? Literally the cutest little Parisian style cafe in between financial district and Chinatown. I loved everything about it! My friend and I came here on a Saturday morning at about 9:30am. There were people sitting on the pink little tables outside chit chatting but it was still so quiet and relaxing. Amongst the two of us, we shared a Brioche Feuillette, Brioche Tourbillon and a Flan Parisien. Yes, a lot of pastries but easily burned off with SF hills lol. Everything was SO GOOD but especially the Brioche Feuillette. Truly a piece of art--I have never seen a pastry more beautiful. We also ordered two lattes which balanced out the pastries perfectly. They are HUGE, buttery, beautiful to look at delicious to eat. While I was looking at the many things they had on the menu, I got to chatting (shocker I know) with some of the staff learning about all the other things on display for the day. ProTip, get there early, there are so many good things that were gone for the day because those in the know, were there on time. Early bird and all... I also ordered a coffee and duck pate with sweetbread. Delicious. In love duck and have the sweet notes of the apricot was such a nice balance. It is a perfect picnic dish, and should be ordered and then carried over to Washington Square park with some sparkling wine on the days we get those warm moments in the city. I also loved the open kitchen concept. I got to watch the bakers prep for the next day and it was liking watching all the cool baking shows on Netflix. Love their pastries! My wife said Maison Nico is her favorite croissant in SF, with Arsicault's ham and cheese being a close second. They have seasonal flavors and other specials so I recommend following them on Instagram. Right now, they have an avocado choux and a rhubarb lavender tart which we loved. The have some seating inside and several tables outside but it can be bit difficult to secure one on a weekend morning. Staff is really kind and parking has been relatively easy for us by SF standards. read more

They put up a stall at the farmers market at the ferry building every Saturday! This French bakery is awesome - my friend recommended it so I decided to try and it made my weekend. I ordered a pumpkin pastry - it was unique, pretty and all the layers of the pastry were perfectly flavored. The top part was crispy and flaky like a regular pastry (topped with some sunflower seeds I believe?) and the bottom was gooey - filled with some pumpkin based cream - it was delicious. I am not sure if it's just a holiday special but I'd definitely get some more next weekend. I'm Excited to try other pastries too! read more

I've been there 5+ times and Maison Nico can be summed up in one word "perfection". This bakery is not cheap, but their presentation, quality and staff are all perfect. I got here because of a lack luster experience at Paris Baguette on Market and Sutter. Reading through the Yelp recommendations, I see Maison Nico as the standard. I think, ok I'll drive over. I was a little put off by the "wait outside till your called sign", but the staff was quick, efficient, friendly and professional. I've been by the stall at the Saturday ferry building farmers market, and finally went to their brick and mortar shop downtown. What a treat! It was so wonderful I went twice this weekend! Everything in the shop is so beautifully displayed, and also delicious. Over two visits, I tried the baguette, various kinds of pates, the ham and cheese in puff pastry, the seafood in aspic, the chocolate tart, the macadamia nut dessert, and the cream puff. I loved it all -- and the menu changes so when you go it may be different! You really can't go wrong -- recommend bringing a friend or two so you can try more things! That said, I really really loved the cream puff so recommend getting whatever flavor they have as that seems to be a standing item! The place feels like you've stepped into a salon in Paris and get to buy various bits for a picnic. We ate in the tables outside, and it was a wonderful lunch. This might be my new favorite place for my love of pate and baguette. I was thinking of ordering online but decided to do takeout since we were near there anyway. It was the right decision since I found out it'd be hard to try to cut the loaf nicely at home. We had half of the loaf of Pate De Canard and I'm glad I didn't buy the whole loaf. It was so savory and flavorful, one slice would be enough for one of us since I got it cut thicker than usual. I'd say buying a half loaf (around 3-4lbs) would be enough for 4 people on one seating.
