I had been meaning to try Maison Nico for a while, and finally decided to try at the ferry building farmers market. The pain au chocolat was so delicious!! The layers on top were crunchy without being overly oily, and the chocolate inside was tasty as well. There wasn't too much air inside, and I enjoyed every bite of this croissant. The shop and goods are undeniably charming and visually appealing. The service I received was really wonderful as well. That being said, perhaps it's more personal preference but do not consider their croissants to be the best in the city. I judge first and foremost on the most simple type of croissant, the butter croissant, and it just lacked the buttery-ness, messy AF flakiness I would expect from an exceptional croissant. Definitely a very solid croissant, not exactly dry but it was not what I was expecting. It seems like their filled croissants are overall more satisfying as the filling (which by the way was very fresh and inspiring in the guava) gives the croissant the necessary moistness to satisfyingly go down the gullet. I also tried the chocolate croissant and canele; both were good but again, not what I'd consider the best in the city. Had to try Maison Nico after learning they won SF best croissant award. The star of the day was the Paris Brest! Made with macadamia and coffee creme this was light and not too sweet, topped with pieces of macadamia to give that extra crunch. Also tried the pithivier (half with salad), choux de saison, house smoked salmon sandwich, and quiche traditionelle (potato, bacon, compte cheese). Everyone behind the counter was very pleasant and patient to answer all our questions. The set up allows you to see the kitchen staff working hard in the kitchen. Very hospitable, and we can't wait to go back at an earlier time to get their seasonal croissants that sell out quickly after opening. read more

Lovely little shop with delicious delicate pastries. I had this spot bookmarked for so long from seeing their IG account and I finally visited! The workers here are really nice and attentive. Plain butter croissant is airy and light, better than average croissants, but definitely not as good as those at Arsicault. Ham and cheese is very different (soft cheese and and it almost tastes like pate)- the filling is GOOEY! We had trouble finishing it so will not get that again. Chocolate croissant looks pretty and tastes good--the chocolate is the dark kind, not too sweet. I think this place specializes in pate pastry for those who like that. croissants... so so in our opinion. Ok let's not forget about the flies. There are A LOT of flies in the area. Is there something the restaurant can do about this as I see a lot at their entrance and right outside. There are a few small baby flies in their pastry display case and they take out pastries from there to serve customers so there's that risk :(. I wish I didn't see them. read more

The best french pastries I've ever had in the city! The choux had such a unique and fresh blend of flavors and the basil complemented the berry so well. We've eaten at Maison Nico several times and it's always been absolutely great. We just tried a pithivier that we baked at home. I was a bit concerned that it wouldn't turn out right, but it was perfect. The sauce that came with it was really wonderful. This is a real gem for San Francisco. read more

Although indoor dining was still resticted due to Covid, the delicious pastries, paté and aspic were all available emporter. The current selection is limited to about 20 or so ítems, but the presentation is so exquisite, you will want to try everything. I stopped by this French spot to grab some pastries before heading back home after going to all birds. Btw I love this area of San Francisco because I always find parking, it seems like you won't find parking but you will soon, just hang in there! Parking after 6pm is free for the most part and also Sunday's parking is free all day score! I was line for a little bit longer than I would have liked to be honest, there were 4 parties ahead of me and it took me about 10 minutes to get my order in. Seems short but for some reason I definitely noticed. I felt overwhelmed because I didn't look at the menu beforehand and I was really confused with the per weight items. I like to eat delicious foods but do not want to pay an arm and a leg for them without knowing I did. I got 3 pastries and one latte and my order cost about 30$ including tip, pretty pricey and I didn't even get the most expensive items. I got the bostock, ham pastry and the chocolate loaf. Sorry I'm terrible at French so not sure what the French names were. I put pics up so hope that helps. The ham pastry was yummy if you're craving a savory dish - tip, you can ask for them to heat this up. I was blown away by the bostock, wow delicious! Definitely recommend. The cafe latte was decent, nothing too special and no art haha. My server forgot to add the bostock and didn't apologize when I asked to include that after I had already paid lol, aloof much? but I didn't care too much bc she was nice about things when I asked for water and to go box. I can see why people have complained about the service, not sure if it's the service but the vibes. It might be more of a reserved and aloof vibe but it's a cute place to chill or go on a date. I saw two people on a first date here, was standing behind them and overheard their convo lol sorry. They have maybe 6 tables in the back and their kitchen was hard at work and visible to all. Delicious bakery with excellent French pastries! The very friendly staff guided me through their selection, and I went home with half a pound of pork and tomato pâté, a brioche feuilletée loaf, and an entire pear tart. I would rate the individual items 8, 7, and 10, respectively. The pâté was very good, and it's their original specialty. I'm not big on pate, but I found this one delicious with a nice texture, good sun dried tomato contrast, and flaky crust. The famed feuilletée was very good as well, but the brioche bread center with the flaky outside layers wasn't an ideal balance for me. I would have preferred them separately. The pear tart was my favorite - deliciously buttery, with a thick and heavy crust, and wonderful sliced pear topping. A lot of times pear desserts are prepared with a little spice, like cinnamon, but I preferred Nico's simple version which was more demure but quite tasty. Hoping they start doing delivery soon. The pâté should hold up quite well as far as delivery goes! read more

Space is limited and it's difficult to see all the food because the line is in front of the case. I ordered a Strawberry Tart and a Mini Quiche with Goat Cheese. Both were extremely delicious. Found this hidden gem near my house! During Covid I was always passing by this place while I was running errands and there were always a line. I was wondering what people were lining up for. Finally today I decided to go check it out. Came in at 2pm and there were still some pastries left but it was almost sold out. Everything looked so good. Right as I enter a friendly staff greeted me in the front. I got 2 croissants, Parisian flan, and a chocolate creme puff! The total came out to be $18 and it is quite pricey but I thought it was totally worth it! They pack it in cute simple white boxes. Would I come here again? Absolutely! I was getting my usual Rebel Within from CAW (Craftsman and Wolves - see my review on an earlier time if curious) stand on Saturday (10/31/20) and realized that this bakery stand was next to it. So this rating is for the Farmers' Market stand @Ferry Building. The stand had the 6-ft separation indication on the ground, with numbers. Of course, it ended at 3 (not expecting longer lines?). The server was wearing a mask, as other patrons. The food - I got one Brioche Feuilletee (single) because there was only one left by the time I got there. I really wanted to like it. It looked very pretty - many layered brioche, what's not to like. And don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. It may be a shock for you to hear this from me, but it wasn't sweet enough. Yes, you read it right - not sweet enough. So according to the description of the brioche, it's supposed to have almond paste somewhere. I am guessing outside, as there was no paste inside. And it was sweet on the side. But look - my mouth is not that large (contrary to popular opinion ;) ) to have every bite that includes the side. When the brioche itself is not remotely sweet, the majority of your bites is going to be... meh. It really surprised me because French desserts and pastries are usually too sweet for me. The service - The woman manning the stand was pleasant enough. However, she made it obvious that she only had one loaf and one single of its Brioches left. Interesting because it was only ~10:20 am, and the market does not end until noon - 2 pm. Hmm. Either it did really well early in the morning, or not enough of them were brought to the market. She did seem to have more pates in the cooler, so perhaps its focus was on those at the market? read more

We ordered a galette des rois, meyer lemon & thyme tartlet, and a couple butter croissants. The galette des rois' frangipane should have been sweeter, while the meyer lemon on the tartlet should have been more tart. Moreover, the tartlet had minimal meringue atop. The intent of the meringue is for its sweetness to complement the tartness of the lemon. The crust was however the right thickness and consistency. Overall, it is a miss. Boulettes Larder has a much better meyer lemon tart (however, it is not consistent). The butter croissants were good, but nothing special. As far as customer service goes, it is not very efficient. I was super excited to come here after hearing they have bested arsicault...but.. unfortunately the croissants were a bit stale. Arsicault has this beautiful crunchy crust, Nico didn't. The flavors were quite nice, but for a pastry of this caloric commitment, I am a hard pass. The pastry itself is beautiful, but sometimes, it's what's inside that counts. I ordered around 2pm, maybe your mileage will vary at a different time. It's a shame, such a cute space. Chef commands so much respect... but then the attention to detail/expiration is missing. @nico.. maybe it's better to sell out, than to sell stale. 3 stars--the feuilletee is solid but I personally think a croissant is preferable--aside from the top of the loaf, the body of the feuilletee is relatively unremarkable and tastes like a less eggy challah bread. I'm not saying that this particular feuilletee is subpar, just that the concept itself feels more style over substance when I think about a well executed croissant as a point of comparison. My bigger issue was with the Parisian flan. $8 for this really small piece was kind of insane . Flavor and interest to this baked good also missed expectations again. You can also see the caramelization was poorly executed. As a point of comparison, I personally rather tuck into a pasteis de nata any day over this item. read more

Croissants and pastries are just decent if you compare it to Arsicault and other sf staples. The service has always been super weird to me. One time they messed up my pastry bag which I only realized when I got home. They mistakenly put 2 plain croissants instead of the 2 pain au chocolat which they charged for. But when I went back and showed them the receipt and the plain croissants, the guy @ the counter got annoyed and confused and asked me to step aside and started helping the other customers. After 10 mins he then asked for the plain croissants back and wanted to charge me again for the 2 pain au chocolat. I asked him wht he was charging me for when I already paid for my pastries and gave him back the 2 plain croissants tht I had received, he got super annoyed again and until his co-worker decided to give me my pain au chocolat tht I had paid for.
