Large bowl 2 teriyaki chicken, kalua pig, 2 sides of macaroni salad
    Nicholas C.

The chicken teriyaki is so juicy and seasoned just melts in your mouth. I think the macaroni salad and kalua pig here is better than L&L in my opinion. The service is always friendly too. A very ska music vibe inside that makes you wanna chill.

Quality went down or just a bad day? Wee Ordered thru Uber Eats for pick up but we opted to eat in. The young girl at the registered seemed like she didn't want to be in there, we got two small chicken plates and the chicken was a bit on the dry side that I almost choked on the chicken that I had to run to the restroom to throw it up and from what it looked like the portions are less than my last review. The rice scoop was less and the Mac salad was on the bland side this time, the teriyaki sauces used to be in a packet now they give it you in a container which was barely enough for the plate. Service is lacking ambiance is ok.

Food was a lot better than last visit as well as the customer service. New workers with better attitude.

They always have the best food but today they excelled! The best costumer service. Going above and beyond our orders. Letting us know which sauce was spicy, that the spam roll was hot, and giving us plenty of food. I'm coming back.

If real Hawaiian food is too strong and salty for you. But you want to eat something like it with a more neutral taste. This place is for you when walking up to enter the eatery. You notice the more caucasian type of customers enjoying the food. Service from the staff was great they were friendly and very helpful explaining how they operate. Being an à la cart set up. The eatery was very clean the over head music playing the tourist type of Hawaiian Music really matched the atmosphere and food there. If you're a Kanaka Maoli you won't find this place for you. But if you're not from Hawaii or if you visited the islands and want a more touristy experience of Hawaiian cuisine. Then this place is definitely worth visiting.

Mochiko chicken. Let's just say these dried out wings are not their specialty.

It's hit or miss at Makai: Kalua pig stands out, smoky and tender with a generous amount on the plate. Would have tasted better if it was less salty. The steak is well-seasoned, worth getting, and though the Pulehu method of roasting over embers isn't how they do it here, it's the next best thing. Teriyaki chicken and Katsu chicken both tasted okay, not much different than what you'd get elsewhere. Be sure to ask for some dipping sauce. Mochiko chicken was not at all impressive - basically just a few small, dry tasting wings (flat and drumette mix) that are fried without batter. There's an upcharge for this entree, which is more like an appetizer. Also not a fan of how Makai scoops warm rice onto your plate and then puts the utensil right back into a stainless steel container filled with water...murky water. I won't say it looked like bathwater after you emerge from the tub following a weekend camping trip off-grid in the wilderness...but it's not appealing. They also need to upgrade the packaging on takeout orders. Makai piles entree, side, and rice all together into one tin container with no separation and the results are not ideal. The cold food (such as macaroni salad) quickly becomes lukewarm and the hot food (such as kalua pork) also quickly becomes lukewarm. Using separate hot & cold containers to keep the mayo-based foods safe to eat would be more sensible. Sure doesn't take long when the afternoon sun hits 115 degrees. Overall most of Makai's food tastes good, the staff is friendly, and it's spacious inside with lots of seating.

First time here, been wanting to try at another location, this kne is more convenient for me. Took my out of town daughter who doesn't get to go to Hawaii as much. Food was great for our first experience. I shared a medium bowl with my one daughter and the other had a medium bowl to herself. We decided on kalua pig, pulehu steak, mochiko chicken and chicken katsu. The steak was excellent. I'd definitely get that again, katsu was nice and crispy, I didn't expect the mochiko chicken to be wings, had something else in mind. It was ok, and kalua pig was tender and smoky. I was pleasantly surprised how good it was, and even though we went for a later.lunch, we seemed to have brought in a crowd. Two workers at the counter, fast and friendly. Restaurant was clean and open, nice music playing in the background. Already thinking about what I'll get next time.

    Large meal, off the chain.

The oxtail soup was really good: the broth seemed like it has a good amount of shoyu in it (it was dark), and had really nice beef flavor. There were also some shiitake mushrooms, which added to the umami, and fresh cilantro which, paired with the grated ginger, really complemented the savory elements. The oxtails were super tender and plentiful. The meat was well seasoned and fell off the bone. I've eaten a lot of oxtail soup, and this was really good. The limu poke was also solid. The limu was a nice touch: it's not as frequent to see it on the mainland, and I like the smoky flavor it imparts on the poke. The taro turnover was a revelation. It was so good it didn't make it to photos. The pastry crust was flakey, the taro was warm and sweet, and the Carmel drizzle was really nice. It does take 20 minutes to get the turnover, but I think it's worth it.

You can tell this is family owned and run, with a lot of passion and hard work put into the place. The owner is lovely and brews a mean cup of delicious Kona coffee. They do get busy (was here on a Saturday at 11 am and it was packed) and make stuff to order, so be prepared for Island Time when you dine here. Even the musubi and coffee are made to order. My only quibble was that I paid for a custard filled malasada and since they don't give it to you right then and there if you are dining in with other dishes, they let me know later they actually had run out. But they are that good. Otherwise all the food was delicious and brought my husband and I back to our last vacation there. The live music made the time fly. I recommended this place to my friends immediately. Free and plenty parking in front.

I was thoroughly unimpressed and my belief in these influences has worn thin. I came here for their famous beef ribs and Mac spam. Firstly, they did not have their famous ribs and from other reviews its been 2 weeks since they've had it. Fine, im not really OK with that but it is what it is bc the business cant control stock and where they have to buy it from. I got a steak and galbi plate that tasted burnt, flavorless and most of all, unlike all the videos I saw, it did NOT come "packed". Im glad it didn't anyways bc i did not enjoy the food. I also got the mac spam and a double spam misubi. Sooooooo much rice and the double spam really equals to one regular spam size at other hawaiian places. The Mac spam was very bland and both the spams not worth its price. The inside was hot and looked old. The music was cool and the cashier, a young woman, looked severely depressed and unenthusiastic. I didn't like the vibe, the cashier was unfriendly, and it was not worth the wait. I give honest reviews. I dont get paid and dont make exaggerated videos.

FOOD #19 - Famous Five Star - 9.1 / 10 A combo platter featuring Kalbi Short Ribs, Ribeye Teriyaki Beef, Chicken Katsu, & Teriyaki Chicken. The Kalbi Short Ribs were impressively meaty. Usually, other Hawaiian places serve fattier ribs with scant meat. The ones here were decently substantial & decently trimmed of unnecessary fat. The sauce is thick, savory, with just the right amount of body + sweetness. The Ribeye Teriyaki Beef is similar but in the form of the best cut on meat. No bones, no necessary fat. It's everything I think of when I think "premium beef". I could eat an entire Family Size bowl of this stuff + steamed white rice. Again, the exact same teriyaki sauce is miles above any other Hawaiian place because its thick, umami, & not-too-sweet. The Chicken Katsu is thick + generous in portion. In fact, this plate was a decent portion to satisfy me & my buddy for a few hours before our epic dinner at The Golden Steer. The macaroni salad was refreshing, medium-bodied, & not too creamy. The macaroni noodles were not-too mushy. The salad itself was noticeably less sweet compared to that at other Hawaiian restaurants. The teriyaki chicken was lean & not fatty. Again, the same sauce really carries this protein to a higher level of other Hawaiian restaurants' teriyaki chicken. Like I said, the owners here are putting in a lot of work to make their offerings miles above what other Hawaiian places do. Hot Dog Masubi - 7.5 / 10 Granted, I'm more of a spam masubi kind-of-guy, this was still a refreshing take on a Hawaiian classic. The peculiar redness of the hot dog links is oddly satisfying. A pretty big size for a snack. Rice was well cooked. Seaweed had a nice chew.

His cousin couldn't stop raving about the food, so we decided to check it out for dinner last night. We ordered the Crackhead Chicken and Da "OG" Beef to share, and I also got a Spam musubi I had been craving. The musubi was HUGE and really hit the spot. We also ordered a side of Crackhead Chicken without the spice for our 1 year old, and she LOVED it. Normally she throws her food, but this time she actually ate it and kept making the cutest "yummy" faces the whole time. The moment I took my first bite of chicken, my reaction said it all. The flavor was INCREDIBLE! It had a perfect balance of sweetness from the coconut and a nice kick from the spices. Everything worked so well together, and the chicken itself was unbelievably moist and juicy. I also loved that the meat was served over the rice, allowing for all the juices to soak in. The rice was soft, flavorful, and just as satisfying. The macaroni salad was hands down my favorite compared to any Hawaiian BBQ spot I've tried. I also had a few bites of the beef, which had an amazing flavor and just the right amount of char to elevate it even more. The only thing that didn't stand out to me was the coleslaw, but we found out later that you can substitute for extra macaroni salad for an additional 50 cents. We will definitely do that next time! Overall, we had a fantastic experience and will absolutely be back whenever we are in the area. One quick note for parents: there are no high chairs available, and we even searched the entire food court. Since it's inside a casino, it's understandable, but just something to keep in mind.
