I came and ate here with my fiancé and baby this past Friday 5/22 around 1:30pm. The service was good until we got up to the register. I ordered a protein bowl and my fiancé got a medium plate. I don't usually order poke on the side so I wasn't sure where to order it, so I asked the lady when we got to the register. I asked if we could also get 1/4lb of poke then she asked which kind. I said, "half and half" and she said, "okay?" sounding very condescending as if it was a stupid request but I always get that if I get poke from any Makai location. Then when we were ready to pay, she rang us up so quick and didn't even ask if we wanted something to drink when both of us wanted a fountain drink. Whatever, no big deal, less on our bill I guess. After my fiancé paid, I realized he didn't get the points maybe because he used a different card so I tried to tell the lady at the register. She said, "it should've popped up." Well obviously it didn't if I asked about it. I tried to ask again but then my fiancé said let's just go because he was already annoyed of her condescending tone from the beginning of our encounter with her that he didn't even want to pay or eat there anymore. To make this experience worse, while I was eating, I found a curly hair in my rice. My hair is super straight and the hair was deep in the rice so it obviously wasn't me. I ate around it, don't judge me I was hungry. And usually I wouldn't mind complaining but the encounter with that woman was just so unpleasant and unprofessional that I just couldn't wait to get out of there. Very sad cause I like this place and I don't like giving out 1 star reviews but this woman should know how to interact with people. I've worked in the food and service industry for over a decade so I know exactly how to go above and beyond with customer service. It could've been a bad day for her, but didn't seem like it when she was being nice with greeting customers after us. I don't know if she realized she was condescending and a little rude so she changed her attitude, but if we're still in the restaurant, you have a chance to make up for it. Even worse, I assume she's a manager since the other employees were wearing t shirts and she had a floral polo on. Quality went down or just a bad day? Wee Ordered thru Uber Eats for pick up but we opted to eat in. The young girl at the registered seemed like she didn't want to be in there, we got two small chicken plates and the chicken was a bit on the dry side that I almost choked on the chicken that I had to run to the restroom to throw it up and from what it looked like the portions are less than my last review. The rice scoop was less and the Mac salad was on the bland side this time, the teriyaki sauces used to be in a packet now they give it you in a container which was barely enough for the plate. You notice the more caucasian type of customers enjoying the food. Service from the staff was great they were friendly and very helpful explaining how they operate. Being an à la cart set up. The eatery was very clean the over head music playing the tourist type of Hawaiian Music really matched the atmosphere and food there. If you're a Kanaka Maoli you won't find this place for you. It's hit or miss at Makai: Kalua pig stands out, smoky and tender with a generous amount on the plate. Would have tasted better if it was less salty. The steak is well-seasoned, worth getting, and though the Pulehu method of roasting over embers isn't how they do it here, it's the next best thing. Teriyaki chicken and Katsu chicken both tasted okay, not much different than what you'd get elsewhere. Be sure to ask for some dipping sauce. Mochiko chicken was not at all impressive - basically just a few small, dry tasting wings (flat and drumette mix) that are fried without batter. There's an upcharge for this entree, which is more like an appetizer. Also not a fan of how Makai scoops warm rice onto your plate and then puts the utensil right back into a stainless steel container filled with water...murky water. I won't say it looked like bathwater after you emerge from the tub following a weekend camping trip off-grid in the wilderness...but it's not appealing. They also need to upgrade the packaging on takeout orders. Makai piles entree, side, and rice all together into one tin container with no separation and the results are not ideal. The cold food (such as macaroni salad) quickly becomes lukewarm and the hot food (such as kalua pork) also quickly becomes lukewarm. Using separate hot & cold containers to keep the mayo-based foods safe to eat would be more sensible. Sure doesn't take long when the afternoon sun hits 115 degrees. Overall most of Makai's food tastes good, the staff is friendly, and it's spacious inside with lots of seating. read more

Food was great for our first experience. I shared a medium bowl with my one daughter and the other had a medium bowl to herself. We decided on kalua pig, pulehu steak, mochiko chicken and chicken katsu. The steak was excellent. I'd definitely get that again, katsu was nice and crispy, I didn't expect the mochiko chicken to be wings, had something else in mind. It was ok, and kalua pig was tender and smoky. I was pleasantly surprised how good it was, and even though we went for a later.lunch, we seemed to have brought in a crowd. Two workers at the counter, fast and friendly. Loved Makai Grill when I lived in the Southwest, got it all the time personally and catered for work events. Everyone loved it and I would boast how consistently delicious it was - however I can't at all say the same about this location. Both dining in and ordering delivery (through apps like postmates/uber eats) this location has been a miss more often than not. 3 tries ordering delivery back to back I got incorrect items or items missing entirely. Tried to call about it and even asked the next time I dined in and they were dismissive and rude and referred me to their gmail support email (that I emailed back in August with no response. Dining in it wasn't the cleanest and utensil and napkin holders were empty and we had to request it be filled to eat our meal. Unfortunately I'd skip out on Makai if this location is your only option. read more

This franchise has consistent delicious flavors regardless of the location you visit. Today, I had the large bowl with 3 meats and two sides. It was my only meal of the day, and it was plenty of food to fill me up. My favorite side is the kimchee. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. They also have other types of chicken, pork, and tuna for an additional fee. Service was good. They were fast and friendly the location was really clean too. Ample parking in the area. We just moved to the area from Hawaii. While we were shopping for stuff at Walmart / Sam's Club we happened to see this place and decided to try it. Was pleasantly surprised by the food. I had the Teri chicken and Teri steak and it was ono. The kimchi slaw was pretty good too. My wife had the poke bowl and the poke was fire. They even had a BOGO special so it was 2 bowls for the price of 1, if you ordered the small. It was decent food, not spectacular, but good. The chicken came with no sauce on it, so I'm glad I had ordered a side of teriyaki sauce (for $0.25, even though I think the first one should be included since teriyaki chicken SHOULD have teriyaki sauce on it!). After reviewing the menu, we had decided to order the following [2] Bowls (2 meats and rice) Kalua Pig/PULEHU STEAK [1] ONO'ER (MEDIUM) - Teriyaki Chicken and Kalua Pig. Sides: KimChee ColeSlaw and Macaroni Salad. It didn't take long to prepare, less than 10 minutes. The team members were helpful and provided feedback to the questions we had. We ended up taking the meals home to eat. The Kalua Pig bowl was so good! The meat was juicy! It enhanced the rice flavor! My daughter enjoyed the Pulehu steak. Service is quick and efficient. I got a ono'er (medium) plate with white rice, garlic edamame, kimchi slaw, chicken katsu, and spicy poke. Would not get the chicken katsu again from this location, it was over fried and looked way darker, not that golden brown. It made the chicken taste dry and bland. Would also not get the spicy poke again, was not as flavored and fresh as I'd hoped. The sides were yummy though. Also got pineapple dole whip for dessert, refreshing and not too sweet, would order this again. Price point is reasonable for the amount of food you get. It's a build your own type of place, very customizable. I thoroughly enjoyed my kalua pig. Super tender and juicy. I ordered the salad option with the creamy sesame sauce. Delish. For my second meat, I chose their mochiko chicken. Beautifully glazed and juicy. My whole meal was absolutely delicious. The kimchee slaw was not my favorite, but good. Had a nice kick. My husband enjoyed his triple chicken katsu. It was absolutely phenomenal (I had to try it). He got white rice on the side as well as kimchee slaw. Overall, some great eats! We will be back.
