Best Makai location. I have been to 3 Makai locations since they have opened the last 9 years I've been here. I've been to the Rock Springs, St Rose, and Maryland parkway. Out of all 3, the best lately has been this place. From food to staff, it stays consistent for my experiences. The best is when the manager or lead ( he looks like David from Schitt's creek) made me a new bowl because the food wasn't fresh since we had been waiting for the chicken katsu for 10min. He made the other worker look pretty bad for trying to serve me food that was not going to be fresh since we had waited for the katsu. I didn't even have to say anything and he went out of his way! I'll always remember and still come back knowing he really cares about the customers! Anyways, the staff do keep the food here fresh! This location is def consistent in doing this while St Rose fails at this. I had dry chicken at st rose before and I couldn't be convinced to come back. This place doesn't seem to let their food sit for a long time. I never got burnt chicken here. Katsu is consistent. I can't speak for poke since St Rose location put a bad taste in my mouth with their poke ( it was so salty). Macaroni salad is on point( not salty like St Rose). Hapa rice is heaven rice here. Soft and fresh. It was good yesterday! Salads are kept fresh as well. No lifeless veggies! My favorite about Makai is the seasame dressing! That is my crack!!! If it wasn't for that dressing, I wouldn't come back! lol They also have my favorite masubis! Ambience is chill. Ordered a small bowl with kalbi and sweet corn, a salad bowl with 2 portion kalbi and a side of poke. Asked for spicy sauce and the creamy sesame dressing for my salad. Unfortunately received the regular sauce and NO salad dressing. Didn't realize it until I got home. Guess I should always double check and can't trust people to pay attention to details. Also, worker stated that my receipt is in the bag. It wasn't there. Edit : kalbi is good! Wontons taste stale compared to other locations and the sweet corn is unfortunately sour. Normally the food tastes great and they pack everything nice and full. I ordered through uber eats for my lunch break on feb 18th and most my chicken was burnt. If I was at the restaurant, I would've asked for a new bowl, but I was stuck with burnt chicken. I definitely ate everything around it because I was hungry and the food IS VERY TASTY. We still love makai but I ordered a small plate and it cost me almost 12 for 1 kalbi as protein and a scoop of rice and a side. Seemed really off. He said I ordered small so it's one piece of Kalbi and because it's kalbi he had to upcharge me. I thought an upcharge would be if I ordered another protein so i was confused. I didn't argue because this is my usual spot. My daughter was so hungry after school so she scarfed it down. It just didn't seem worth the price. If you want kalbi then go to a k bbq place. Super nice & incredibly helpful greeted me , took my order & went above & beyond to ensure I had a great experience (: Kiddos were hungry so I came early morning Got two kids meals which were really affordable considering everywhere else they charge you so much for something so small & not very appealing for kids , glad Makai has a great option for kids , definitely coming back for more . I love Makai's but today the food tastes very old. I always get poke and usually it's very good and satisfying but today it tasted so old and like it had been frozen for way too long. I got a small bowl with Mac and poke & my bf got a medium bowl with kalua, poke , rice , Mac , and edamame. The only thing that had good flavor was the kalua pig. Usually I'd consider a second chance but not with this place because the icing on the cake was the rude staff. No one great us when we went in and basically had a staring competition with staff before I started ordering because no one said a word to us prior. Very rude and unprofessional. As someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, this was very disappointing. Owners need to preach aloha to their staff! read more

i love makai's food from all locations but the workers here have to be the most incompetent and inconsistent people ever. i never get the same amount of food despite always ordering the same thing every time. everytime i ask what the actual amount is its a different answer. its really annoying and a lot of these workers have terrible customer service and just blatant attitude. it sucks having to write a negative review abt this place because the food and environment are always 10/10 for me, however, the people who work here and other locations always ruin it for me.. pls train ur workers better read more

They open at 10:30am we got there at about 10:45am on 6/11/24 Tuesday. Having just open, the place was very clean, bright welcoming. The place is modern with an attempt at Hawaiian decor. The lady with colored hair who may have been the manager was very helpful and pleasant. She helped us with the size and type of protein. Everyone was helpful pleasant and alway had a smile. We both had a small teriyaki steak bowl which included one scoop of rice and one side. I think it was $7.99 The food was tasty and well seasoned. 5 stars for this clean restaurant which served up hot fresh and tasty food all with friendly helpful staff. I been to this little strip before, which also have 7-11 and I think Roberto Taco, the problem is, there is no parking, because the front is facing Maryland Parkway, side street you can forget about it as well. The only parking you can get is at the back garage, but don't get too happy yet, is only on the first level, and parking is like limited, I think each business only have like 2 parking spaces, there is signs like you here for this business, this is where you park. So here I am, for a quick quickie. Walked in, first impression, just like all Maika Hawaiian, design look exact the same, kinda boring I stood there waited, a older lady checking someone out, the younger girl is kinda wondering in her own little world. So hard to find good help now a days. Hello! You got customer! Let's go! Looking up at the menu, I think one meat option + rice + one side is $7.95, the chicken wings look good, so I decided to order only 1 meat option and side order of wings for $5 and change. I have been waiting for a while for this place to open. I've seen a couple other locations around town but never stopped at any of them. This newest location is close to work for me and so I stopped in the other day for lunch. Makai is kind of like Hawaiian plate lunch done Chipotle style. Choose your size. Choose your meats. Choose your rice. Choose your sides. So many decisions to make before you even get your food. They put it all together for you as you walk down the line. Then get ready to stuff yourself. I ordered a medium with katsu chicken, kalua pig, two scoops of brown rice, a scoop of macaroni salad and kimche slaw. But wait, there's more. I saw that thwy also have musubi. I didn't see it on the menu but they have a case full so I ordered one teriyaki musubi. Not that I needed it. I just love musubi so much. I ate the musubi first. It was quite good. The nori wrap was still tender. A lot of times it becomes so chewy its hard to eat. Not here though. Then I dug into everything else. Rice is rice. Not much more to say other than it was well cooked and a little nutty since I got brown rice. The kimche slaw was fresh and crisp with a little burst of kimche seasoning. But it is not a true fermented kimche and so is a bit more approachable for those who shy away from the pungent nature of the real stuff. Finally the meats. That katsu chicen was superbly crisp but lacks a little flavor when eaten plain. But that is why you have katsu sauce. Dip the chix in what is basically ketchup's more sophisticated brother and you are in for a treat. And the kalua pig so juicy and succulent. Tender, salty, sweet. Try it with a little bit of the katsu sauce too. You may come to the same conclusion that I did. Kalua pig with katsu sauce served on a steam bun would make a kick a$$ pulled pork sandwich Hawaiian style. Heck yeah! This is a cool alternative to some of the other standard Hawaiian restaurants in the area. They are quicker given the food is already prepared and served kind of cafeteria style. The drawback to that is that the food is not entirely fresh. Not that it takes much of anything away from it. Its fresh enough and I perfer the convenience on my lunch break anyhow. One final note; I'm not sure how much you can eat. Me personally, I eat less than I used to. I ordered a medium plate and that was WAY too much food. And very heavy on the carbs. Adding the musubi didn't help. So for the rest of the day I was insanely full and suffering from the post carb drowsiness. To quote the immortal Jimmy Buffett, its my own damn fault. I could have stopped and take part home for dinner. In hindsight, I absolutely should have. But I enjoyed my meal and just kept going. After a few anticipated months, we finally have a Makai grill just across the UNLV campus! A great addition to walking-distance restaurant options for students here. The interior of the place is spacious with multiple seating spots and comforting decor. The staff was friendly and quick with serving customers which was efficient. The variety on their menu is the same throughout all other Makai branches. I ordered the ono'est bowl with white rice, teriyaki steak, poke, mochiko chicken, garlic edamame, and macaroni salad. I also got a small dole whip and spam musubi. Everything tasted amazing, and I will put heavy emphasis on their fresh poke. For food quality this good, it's definitely budget-friendly for a quick lunch on the go! I look forward to see this place gain popularity with the students and locals here, and I for sure do look forward for my next visit! read more
