Consider this place like a diner. Sure, you have options but you come here for one thing: Mallorca. This restaurant has been open since the 1940's and they haven't changed. Service is prompt, environment is lively. I highly recommend coming here at 7AM the day you leave, otherwise you'll have to wait a queue. The line There are no fancy coffee drinks. It's coffee, milk, and sugar. I got the Mallorca with eggs, ham, and cheese with a small glass of jugo de china. It was an incredible way to start the day.

Walked in here at ~8:15am for breakfast. There was not a lot of people yet; we were seated at the bar. After a few minutes, people started trickling down and soon the place was close to being full. I liked the mallorca with ham, bacon, cheese! It was delicious. They looked small but they were filling. The pastries displayed at the window were inviting. If you're dining in, you have to tell your server that you're getting some pastries that are on display then you ask the person at the counter who also serves as the cashier to get them for you. The guava pastry was good. The vanilla bread with strawberry and pineapple/lemon was okay. They looked better than they tasted in my opinion. Payment for everything would be at the cashier after dining. If you're in San Juan, this is a place to try!
One of the classics that are amplified via social media. Here was our experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Old San Juan rules--come early or be ready to walk. Seating: Inside seating, plenty of seating but just gets pretty busy because of how popular this place is. Vibes: Welcome to Old San Juan! Heart of Puerto Rico but also a very touristy spot as well. The attitude changes based on the time of day. When it comes to the early/mid day - brekkie/brunch busy. The spot itself was nothing too flashy just your authentic morning coffee shop with servers busy serving people. Great place to chill, chat, and start up your day. FOOD / DRINKS Mallorca - Regular (Recommend) A mallorca is basically a sweet bread but this one is most known for their ham and cheese. We tried getting their as early as possible but they were backed so we had the regular which was a soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet but powdered with sugar. A nice morning boost of energy to start the day. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Gotta respect the employees for handling the busy rushes time in and out. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. A must-try Old San Juan experience. You can get mallorcas in other places but the history here is pretty nice. Review #1,046 Posted on 4.26.26 We came here on Thursday the 23rd while in San Juan area for my buddies 50th birthday. This spot we had seen on social media a ton for being famous for their Mallorca sandwich, a special type bread, we got the one with bacon & American cheese. Man, I made the mistake of doing the bacon instead of ham, overthought that deal. I tried my buddies with ham n cheese and I think that was way to go. I loved how this spot had that super old school feel of like a diner. You can sit at one of the table tops, or you can do the countertop too, which has tons of seats, we all were able to sit there. I'd 100% recommend this spot, but get the ham n cheese mallorca sandwich, don't overthink it.
Stopped by for breakfast on a Tuesday morning around 8am. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we immediately got a table. We ordered two coffees, cheese Mallorca, Swiss Mallorca, coconut macaroon, and Mallorca bread. The coffees were small but mighty. Cheese Mallorcas were delicious and we slightly favored the Swiss version. I'd get it with ham next time. Super simple. Sweet and savory. From the pastry window, we picked up a Mallorca bread with powered sugar which was amazing. The bread was SO soft and fluffy. Very similar to Japanese milk bread. We also got a coconut macaroon which has a bit of lemon flavor to it. Also good, very sweet. I'd definitely come back and highly recommend!
We were recommended this spot by a local - and we are so glad we came to Old San Juan to find it! We arrived just after 8am for good reason, the place fills up so quick! We sat at the bar top for quick service! You must try the famous Mallorca with ham and cheese - this light flufffy pastry like sandwich is delectable. The perfect balance of sweet and savory. Everything was served on paper plates and plastic cups... nothing fancy, just fantastic food and great local coffee. The service was quick, friendly and yes, he spoke little English but it was quite easy to understand as we don't speak Spanish.
I have been coming here for years but recently I have been sat with the gentleman (waiter) in photo and he is the absolute worse. Today I came in with my family of 4 and ordered 4 sandwiches. He told me those are too many sandwiches to Order and he can't make them. He instructed me to order them at another counter. Last year he was too busy socializing and waited 20 minutes for him to finally take my order. Unfortunately I will not be coming back. He is rude! Don't get me wrong the food is good but unfortunately the service from this person ruined the entire experience.
What a charming old-school diner. We were staying around the corner and had walked by a few times in the evenings, when they are closed. I had seen recommendations to try the Mallorcas, so we came back early one morning before 8 AM as we had to catch a tour bus. At that hour it was pretty empty, just the waiter, a cashier, a handful of older gentlemen hanging out, and a couple of tourist groups like ourselves. We all ordered Mallorcas, which are basically breakfast sandwiches of soft thin bread rolls (Mallorcas) with powdered sugar, but come in variations with egg, cheese, ham, bacon, etc. Get any of the variants - not the plain ones, which I don't think come toasted - as they crisp them first with the fillings, then sprinkle the sugar. They were pretty good and cheaper than most other breakfasts we tried in the area. The next morning, we even tried to came back, but it was PACKED at 9 AM so we wandered down to El Meson (fast food) and were sorely disappointed at their version of Mallorcas (to be fair it was dirt cheap there), so I would stick to Cafe Mallorca but COME EARLY! Ambience was old school diner with a long counter and vintage photos of Mallorca and Old San Juan. I wish they would use real plates and cutlery instead of the disposable stuff we found prevalent in PR. Oh and the coffee is nothing special so you fill have to get your espressos or lattes somewhere else.... Oh and the bakery case was filled with what looked like delectable treats but unfortunately we did not get to try those (other than the mallorcas)... next time!
Went from 5 Stars to 1 real quick. Although there are full trays of pastries in the window, they refuse to sell us Mallorca to go. You can only eat on the premises; they are too busy for take-out. Whatever that means. But there are no seats. Does not matter. So we waited and sat at the end of the counter. Where people standing to our left were picking up their to-go orders. No kidding. Plus no air. Server moves like a sloth. Got our order of 4 Mallorcas and 2 coffees wrong. Plus they nuke the coffee. To pay, you are back in 1975 on a long line with the cashier marking every sale in a marble book. And she moves like a snail. All the charm is gone. Mallorca bread is delicious, but it just. Ain't. Worth it.
Must visit while in PR for a quick authentic breakfast experience. Beware, there is usually a long line, however it moves super quick due to the quick service. Their breakfast sandwiches are made right on the spot with fresh mallorcas. Their lemonade and orange juice are also to die for! Freshly squeezed! They are also pretty cheap, in comparison to other options in the area. The hype around this place is definitely worth it, making it a must try!
The sandwich was a 20/10. I saw it in a video and said huh? A what? But you must go try it for yourself. The dining room can get crowded, its seat yourself and then get served, but service was rather quick. Think casual dining. You check out on your way out where you can grab pastries to go as well.
This is quite literally the best surprise I've ever experienced. This constantly comes up as as a must try when in San Juan and there's a line out the door to prove it. Inside, it's a typical cafeteria type restaurant and the poor server we had had a lot of tables to take care of so service was slow but the sandwich is WELL worth the wait. I tried the egg ham and cheese Mallorca. Delicious!!

I LOVE this place! In the heart of old San Juan you can actually have a traditional breakfast at affordable prices. This place is worth every second you wait in line. Don't change Mallorca, YOU are what San Juan is all about. I was so tired of paying tourist prices for Denny's breakfast and it was ruining this foodies experience and then I found you. On the hunt to mark off Mallorca bread from my list of must tries, I found this little restaurant. Very basic inside but with phenomenal food, I ordered the Mallorca with Jamon y queso and it's was DELICIOUS! Add a cafe con leche and you have a perfect breakfast. My daughter ordered the pancakes and hot chocolate and said hers had great flavor as well. Total cost for our breakfast was $10 I will say that the portions are a little small so I would probably order 2 Mallorca next time. I definitely wanted more but with a line out the door I didn't want to be rude. I also noticed the locals ordering a lemonade type drink they said was amazing so I would get that next time too. This place is AMAZING and feels like home! When you coming in find a seat and have someone take your order. The ambiance is rich in culture and tradition every plate of food the came out looked exactly like several of the pictures we saw. Our waiter kept us laughing and didn't lack with recommendations based on what we might have been craving. This is absolutely a place that not only can I not wait to go back and try more of the menu, but I will make it one of my first stops everytime I'm in town. It was absolutely amazing! I wish I would have gotten a picture of the second mallorca and fresh squeezed orange juice but being pregnant and finding a plate of food from your bucket list list that tastes EXACTLY like you dreamed = its getting devoured quick! read more
Cafe Mallorca is in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico always makes me feel like I'm at my favorite dinner at home. It's the kind of place that a lot of local frequent and they know their names and what they order. Well I don't speak much Spanish but that's the body language I'm reading. I love the ambiance. The service is always quick and friendly. The food is incredible. The main thing they serve is Mallorcas which is a semi sweet bread with confection sugar sprinkled on top. They make they with many options like just butter, American or Swiss cheese, Bacon or Ham. I ordered a Bacon Egg and Cheese because I'm an East Coast Born Guy and that's how we do. They only have a Bacon and Cheese on the menu so I told them to add the egg or "huevo" in my limited Spanish. At least I know that one. It came out incredible as always. This place is super consistent and on point. If your ever in Old San Juan and on the breakfast hunt this should be your 1st, 2nd and last stop. They also have fresh juices, coffee, omelets, pancakes, pastries, etc BUT you MUST TRY the MALLORCAS. It's in the businesses name so you know it's good. Trust me, you will not regret it read more

My absolute first stop when I come home to visit! I take all my friends because there really is no place who makes them quite the same or even remotely as good. The staff is hilarious and always down for a selfie and to talk about how good the food is. I love this honest location and IT's history. I hope it never changes! read more
A must try for local diner with great food. Had to try a local Mallorca for breakfast. Followed instructions by the waiter and added Cinnamon... talk about mixing a Cinnamon roll and omelet together to make a delicious sandwich! Very local diner feel to the ambiance so give it a try when you're in the area! Solid prices. read more

I tried this from a recommendation from a close friend from PR. It's a bare boned operation but they are 5 star in my book. The Famous Mallorca was interestingly delicious. I had ham, American cheese and added a egg as someone on Yelp suggested. The powdered made it sweet and savory. Dominico my server was patient and engaging. The frozen Limonado he made was just what I needed on a hot morning! read more

This was a brunch spot almost in the center of Old San Juan. It was very lively when we entered and the prices were reasonable for the portions. The mallorca was amazing and had the perfect ham cheese combo. The contrast between the powdered sugar and the savory ham cheese was great! The friscase was also flavorful, and came with a bean soup. The friscase was filling and had delicious fried plantains in them. The service was also great and the owner took spontaneous selfies with the customers. We got the Mallorca sandwich with ham, eggs, and cheese and loved it! What was special was the powdered sugar on top. You wouldn't expect for it to taste so good with the savory and sweet. The cafe con leche was freshly brewed right in front of us. My friend got a freshly squeezed orange juice which was delicious. Service was a little slow, but it was just more time to converse with my girls! Ambiance was chill and staff was friendly. Loved it here! read more

Absolutely delicious! I travel to Puerto Rico at least 4 times a year and I have never eaten here until now. Good Lord! I have been missing out. The food was delicious. I will NEVER go to Puerto Rico again without getting a Mallorca from here. It's the icing on the cake from my favorite place on earth- PR! The service was wonderful and entertaing. No, fancy decor but the history on the walls tell a thousand stories. read more

Adored this local feeling place. Stepped in at the end of my run this morning for a breakfast. Lucky for me they had cream cheese danishes (my fav). The line was a bit long and the staff weren't overly welcoming but I was able to overlook it all for the authenticity and homemade feel. The space was packed and clean. The food was great. The danish was incredible. Fluffy and sweet and perfectly balanced. This is also the perfect place to enjoy a Mallorca oval yeasty sweet). Everything is made in house and cheap (around $2) read more

What do I say???? How shall I put this? 10 STARS! 10 STARS if you're looking for breakfast in old san juan 10 STARS!!! This place breathes authenticity, nostalgia, classic, historical! The ambience, the food, the people ughhh. Its a small place with minor updates but clean. You can sit at a table or the bar and pick from soooo many wonderful choice of sweets and savory items. I had the classic mallorca, egg, ham and cheese squished between a bread that I can only refer to as heaven and then dusted with the lightest powdered sugar on earth. when you bite into it, its crispy, yet soft! Savory, yet sweet! Im drooling as i write this review and dreaming of the day when i can get back to this place. Our server was a sweet old man. Now I will say I don't like anyone to make my coffee, but thats how they do it here. They ask if you want cream and sugar and they pour it for you into this styrofoam cup. To my surprise, it was perfectly delicious. so my fellow coffee snobs don't come in here expecting the works. its basic and delicious. A no-fuss, unassuming little restaurant that sells a variety of delicious Mallorcas! After waiting ~20 min on a weekday morning, our group of 6 managed to get seated as two tables of 4 and 2. We all had the classic savory Mallorcas, and they tasted exactly how you would imagine (in a good way). The bread itself is like a cross between a sweet croissant and english muffin, and dusted generously with powdered sugar. My personal favorite was the Bacon & Cheese Mallorca. The service was def Puerto Rican time, so maybe not the best if you're in a rush. But otherwise would highly recommend as breakfast/snack on the way to explore San Juan! read more
I was super skeptical initially going here. The concept of a Mallorca, a deli sandwich with powdered sugar on top just didn't seem like it'd be good. But I'm so glad we decided to try this little hole-in-the-wall restaurant! Despite the simple concept, these Mallorca's were delicious!! They were served hot right off the stove (or panini press?) and were a great balance of savory and sweet. None of the flavors were overpowering and worked well together with the slightly sweet bread. Had to get a mallorca for breakfast and this place came highly recommended. Didn't disappoint. We were seated right away and the server seemed like a sweet man. A man of few words who walked around at his own pace smiling away. The servers wear cute little black vests and white shirts for a classy old school look. You make payment at the cashier when you get the check from the server. The mallorca - I got the bacon and cheese sandwich. The texture was flaky and thin sort of puff pastry like but also dense and buttery. Hard to describe really. Very soft. Some people were eating it with forks...I picked it up like a sandwich should be eaten. The bacon and cheese was offset by the sweet powdered sugar on top for a sweet and savory, hearty breakfast. Even though I didn't get to choose the type of cheese in my mallorca here it was leagues better than the other one I tried from another popular spot for mallorca in San Juan. The filling in the ham, cheese, and egg melted together perfectly and the inner bread was extremely tender. The whole thing felt more delicate and fresh. Also cooked perfectly were the fried eggs. Didn't even have to ask for them to retain runny yolks. The toast was also perfectly fried. They know how to do a fantastic classic breakfast and for a great price. It's hard to find that. Unassuming yet fabulous breakfast before our long day trip to the rainforest! Great service and very tasty Mallorca's with unsmoked bacon. Savory, subtly sweet, and very affordable. Servers don't speak English, but very attentive and easy to communicate with with. Highly recommend to any traveler! read more
