Consider this place like a diner. Sure, you have options but you come here for one thing: Mallorca. This restaurant has been open since the 1940's and they haven't changed. Service is prompt, environment is lively. I highly recommend coming here at 7AM the day you leave, otherwise you'll have to wait a queue. The line There are no fancy coffee drinks. It's coffee, milk, and sugar. I got the Mallorca with eggs, ham, and cheese with a small glass of jugo de china. It was an incredible way to start the day.

Walked in here at ~8:15am for breakfast. There was not a lot of people yet; we were seated at the bar. After a few minutes, people started trickling down and soon the place was close to being full. I liked the mallorca with ham, bacon, cheese! It was delicious. They looked small but they were filling. The pastries displayed at the window were inviting. If you're dining in, you have to tell your server that you're getting some pastries that are on display then you ask the person at the counter who also serves as the cashier to get them for you. The guava pastry was good. The vanilla bread with strawberry and pineapple/lemon was okay. They looked better than they tasted in my opinion. Payment for everything would be at the cashier after dining. If you're in San Juan, this is a place to try!
One of the classics that are amplified via social media. Here was our experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Old San Juan rules--come early or be ready to walk. Seating: Inside seating, plenty of seating but just gets pretty busy because of how popular this place is. Vibes: Welcome to Old San Juan! Heart of Puerto Rico but also a very touristy spot as well. The attitude changes based on the time of day. When it comes to the early/mid day - brekkie/brunch busy. The spot itself was nothing too flashy just your authentic morning coffee shop with servers busy serving people. Great place to chill, chat, and start up your day. FOOD / DRINKS Mallorca - Regular (Recommend) A mallorca is basically a sweet bread but this one is most known for their ham and cheese. We tried getting their as early as possible but they were backed so we had the regular which was a soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet but powdered with sugar. A nice morning boost of energy to start the day. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Gotta respect the employees for handling the busy rushes time in and out. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. A must-try Old San Juan experience. You can get mallorcas in other places but the history here is pretty nice. Review #1,046 Posted on 4.26.26 We came here on Thursday the 23rd while in San Juan area for my buddies 50th birthday. This spot we had seen on social media a ton for being famous for their Mallorca sandwich, a special type bread, we got the one with bacon & American cheese. Man, I made the mistake of doing the bacon instead of ham, overthought that deal. I tried my buddies with ham n cheese and I think that was way to go. I loved how this spot had that super old school feel of like a diner. You can sit at one of the table tops, or you can do the countertop too, which has tons of seats, we all were able to sit there. I'd 100% recommend this spot, but get the ham n cheese mallorca sandwich, don't overthink it.
I have been coming here for years but recently I have been sat with the gentleman (waiter) in photo and he is the absolute worse. Today I came in with my family of 4 and ordered 4 sandwiches. He told me those are too many sandwiches to Order and he can't make them. He instructed me to order them at another counter. Last year he was too busy socializing and waited 20 minutes for him to finally take my order. Unfortunately I will not be coming back. He is rude! Don't get me wrong the food is good but unfortunately the service from this person ruined the entire experience.
Stopped by for breakfast on a Tuesday morning around 8am. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we immediately got a table. We ordered two coffees, cheese Mallorca, Swiss Mallorca, coconut macaroon, and Mallorca bread. The coffees were small but mighty. Cheese Mallorcas were delicious and we slightly favored the Swiss version. I'd get it with ham next time. Super simple. Sweet and savory. From the pastry window, we picked up a Mallorca bread with powered sugar which was amazing. The bread was SO soft and fluffy. Very similar to Japanese milk bread. We also got a coconut macaroon which has a bit of lemon flavor to it. Also good, very sweet. I'd definitely come back and highly recommend!
We were recommended this spot by a local - and we are so glad we came to Old San Juan to find it! We arrived just after 8am for good reason, the place fills up so quick! We sat at the bar top for quick service! You must try the famous Mallorca with ham and cheese - this light flufffy pastry like sandwich is delectable. The perfect balance of sweet and savory. Everything was served on paper plates and plastic cups... nothing fancy, just fantastic food and great local coffee. The service was quick, friendly and yes, he spoke little English but it was quite easy to understand as we don't speak Spanish.
What a charming old-school diner. We were staying around the corner and had walked by a few times in the evenings, when they are closed. I had seen recommendations to try the Mallorcas, so we came back early one morning before 8 AM as we had to catch a tour bus. At that hour it was pretty empty, just the waiter, a cashier, a handful of older gentlemen hanging out, and a couple of tourist groups like ourselves. We all ordered Mallorcas, which are basically breakfast sandwiches of soft thin bread rolls (Mallorcas) with powdered sugar, but come in variations with egg, cheese, ham, bacon, etc. Get any of the variants - not the plain ones, which I don't think come toasted - as they crisp them first with the fillings, then sprinkle the sugar. They were pretty good and cheaper than most other breakfasts we tried in the area. The next morning, we even tried to came back, but it was PACKED at 9 AM so we wandered down to El Meson (fast food) and were sorely disappointed at their version of Mallorcas (to be fair it was dirt cheap there), so I would stick to Cafe Mallorca but COME EARLY! Ambience was old school diner with a long counter and vintage photos of Mallorca and Old San Juan. I wish they would use real plates and cutlery instead of the disposable stuff we found prevalent in PR. Oh and the coffee is nothing special so you fill have to get your espressos or lattes somewhere else.... Oh and the bakery case was filled with what looked like delectable treats but unfortunately we did not get to try those (other than the mallorcas)... next time!
Went from 5 Stars to 1 real quick. Although there are full trays of pastries in the window, they refuse to sell us Mallorca to go. You can only eat on the premises; they are too busy for take-out. Whatever that means. But there are no seats. Does not matter. So we waited and sat at the end of the counter. Where people standing to our left were picking up their to-go orders. No kidding. Plus no air. Server moves like a sloth. Got our order of 4 Mallorcas and 2 coffees wrong. Plus they nuke the coffee. To pay, you are back in 1975 on a long line with the cashier marking every sale in a marble book. And she moves like a snail. All the charm is gone. Mallorca bread is delicious, but it just. Ain't. Worth it.
Must visit while in PR for a quick authentic breakfast experience. Beware, there is usually a long line, however it moves super quick due to the quick service. Their breakfast sandwiches are made right on the spot with fresh mallorcas. Their lemonade and orange juice are also to die for! Freshly squeezed! They are also pretty cheap, in comparison to other options in the area. The hype around this place is definitely worth it, making it a must try!
The sandwich was a 20/10. I saw it in a video and said huh? A what? But you must go try it for yourself. The dining room can get crowded, its seat yourself and then get served, but service was rather quick. Think casual dining. You check out on your way out where you can grab pastries to go as well.
This is quite literally the best surprise I've ever experienced. This constantly comes up as as a must try when in San Juan and there's a line out the door to prove it. Inside, it's a typical cafeteria type restaurant and the poor server we had had a lot of tables to take care of so service was slow but the sandwich is WELL worth the wait. I tried the egg ham and cheese Mallorca. Delicious!!

Honestly the only reason why I can here was for a Mallorca sandwich. It's more of a nostalgia spot for me and it makes me feel like I'm home. It's a must do for a traditional sandwich. I did the ham and cheese version and every bite I had just warmed my soul. It's a must do on the island! read more

This is the best and most typical place to try Mallorca. The ambiance was great and very traditional. You can just walk in and seat down if you find space, but it's very busy overall. The waiters take a while to serve you unless you're at the bar and they can get rude if they feel like you're rushing them, so give them time, and they'll be super nice to you. read more

I got takeout to try the Mallorca bread, which was fluffy and delicious. They accepted card. It seems like a popular breakfast spot for tourists. We got the bread and ate it outside in the plaza where there's public seating. read more

We had tried Mallorca's at another bakery and didn't love it, but I really wanted to try this place because I'd heard such good things. We were both so glad - we came here for breakfast and got mallorca sandwiches with ham cheese etc. They were so delicious. It's definitely a casual, chill place - prices are really reasonable and the service is fine. We paid at the counter after we had our delicious mallorcas - I absolutely recommend coming here for wonderful food. read more

Fire breakfast spot. Mostly seems like classic American breakfast (eggs, sausage, pancakes) but also they have a specialty breakfast sandwich which has some Puerto Rican name I don't know which is completely escaping me currently. However, you won't miss it as it is half of the entire menu and it's very good. Our party ordered like two of these sandwiches each and they are a sort of sweet and salty sandwich that has powdered sugar on top of the sandwich with ham/cheese/bacon/sausage/whatever you choose inside. I would probably not get the conventional breakfast items as most of the continental US does it better but it's nice if you are missing that taste while in Puerto Rico. I also got a Pina Colada which was solid as always. Also, the service is very very good. Our waiter was super chatty and energetic and honestly made our experience sick. The restaurant also looks a little dingy from the outside but it's nice inside. read more

No frills, nothing fancy. BUT the best food is found that way! The mallorcas are amazing! I had no idea what these were and then tried them. They were life changing! The restaurant isn't very decorated, it has an old vibe, the waiters are old school (they may start to show attitude if you can't make up your mind) but that's part of the deal. Fell in love with mallorcas here and tried it at other places during my time in San Juan and they all disappointed me. read more
Delicious mallorca bread!! Definitely one of my favorite. Sooooo soft, fresh, warm, and yummy-sweet. It was not too sweet at all. I had the mallorca with ham and cheese, and the combination was great--savory, sweet, warm, and satiating. We also tried beef empanada, guava pastry, and cream cheese pastry, all of which were good. Coffee with milk was also good. Good service, and cute Puerto Rican ambience (which feels a bit Italian). read more

Came here to try a local Puerto Rican breakfast and had the mallorca with egg ham and cheese ! It was delicious. A mix of savory and sweet from the powdered sugar, and the texture is that of a flaky pastry. The service here is slow and you have to seat yourself as soon as you see a table available, so keep that in mind. Our server was super nice and funny, and made our experience a lot better! read more

We were looking for an authentic restaurant to stop and grab lunch as we were wandering Old San Juan, and this was the perfect spot! We stumbled in, and it gave somewhat old school diner vibes. When we wandered in, we were greeted by this enthusiastic man, who we later found was named Domingo. He was super helpful in answering questions about the menu and was definitely chumming it up with many of the patrons as mentioned in other reviews. He was a whole mood, and a great one at that! We had the fried pork and pigeon peas rice as well as the arroz con longaniza, which was a fried rice with a chorizo type sausage. Both were accompanied by fried plantains and were such good choices. I wish we were more in the mood for sweets while we were there to give their namesake mallorcas a try, or even one of the delicious looking pastries in the window, but alas, we were not. After having such a nice lunch and the entertainment of Domingo while we dined, the attitude of the woman at the register was a bit off-putting, but we didn't let it dampen our overall experience. If you are looking for a casual, reasonably priced, pleasant place to eat, definitely give Mallorcas a try! read more
Old school charms, the interior hasn't changed in decades. Delicious food, expect Puerto Rican style service, not fast but will come in a timely manner. Our waiter Domingo ( we had him all the previous times we were there ) loves to ham it up with the customers and it is lots of fun to see him in action. read more

My cousin and I came to this place after seeing some good reviews on Yelp and walking across it on our little walk through Old San Juan. Service was good and place was packed with locals and tourists alike. We sat at the bar and ordered two lemonades, a mallorca with butter, and a mallorca with cheese. It was ALL PERFECT! We watched a guy squeezing the lemons for the lemonade in the back. The lemonade is almost a light slushy/frozen texture and sweet! (Almost too sweet for me but my cousin loved it!) The mallorcas were warm, sweet, soft, and delicious. We ended up ordering two more to go and ate them for breakfast the next morning. I wish we had more time to come back before we left PR! I would recommend this place highly! read more

Came here for breakfast!! Everything we had was delicious. We arrived around 11 am and there was a bit of a wait. Just keep in mind service is a bit slow. Here is what we ordered and loved. Mallorca with ham, eggs, cheese ( this is a must ) Fried eggs and bacon Tosada - bread and butter toasted in a flat press hits different here !!! Cafe con leche- amazing. Just go here ! read more

This place is a staple to Old San Juan that has been the same for years. The same warm waiters, the same strong café negro, and the same delicious Mallorca sandwiches. It is no frills and is frozen in time with the same exposed brick and old photographs, but still incredibly warm and that is what I love about it. If you are looking for something trendy and new, and are expecting a barista, go to Starbucks. I come here every time I visit the island and love it so do not ruin it for the rest of us! read more
If you are ever in Old San Juan in the morning hours this place is a must stop. Its a low key bakery/diner style restaurant. Nothing fancy but truly authentic Puerto Rican food. Of course their specialty is the mallorca. Everyone in our group ordered on and we all loved it. Its a pressed ham, egg, and cheese sandwich with powdered sugar on top. It tastes absolutely delicious. They also have lots of other breakfast items on the menu including sweet pastries. One of the best parts of our visit was the persn working. I forgot his name but I have seen him in Youtube videos and he is AWESOME. Such a nice and attentive server and had sme great recomendations. He also took some amazing pictures of us without us asking and entertained us. We had a great experience there. If you are deciding on where to get some breakfast in San Juan stop thinking about it and go here! read more

This review is just for the baked goods (not the sit down dining experience). I walked in, retrieved my pastries, and got out, but as a note there was a line out the door at around 9am, so if you're looking to sit down definitely get there early! For pastries, I got the mallorca, guava pastry, and the quesito (pastry with cream cheese inside). The mallorca was pretty much just sweet bread, and I feel bad for knocking on it since this place is literally called Mallorca, but I didn't think it was anything too special. It was delicious to be sure, but it didn't stand out. I'm guessing maybe it would have been more enjoyable if I had had one of their breakfast sandwiches. The quesito was recommended by the person who served me, but it was not my favorite. I think it's a me problem, though, I think I'm just against cream cheese in dessert form. I fully acknowledge my subjective view. Ok, so you may be wondering, why is this review 5 stars if the previous two things were so mediocre? It is BECAUSE OF THE GUAVA PASTRY. IT CARRIED. That thing was so delicious I still think I can taste it if I think hard enough. I have no idea if they make the guava jam from scratch, but it is so. good. So fresh and plentiful, like a jelly donut but the donut part is a flaky croissant. 10/10. It was so good it shined enough for the rest of the pastries. I loved it. I want it. I will continue to think about it long into the future. read more
You can count on Cafeteria Mallorca for a great meal. Sit at the counter to feel the energy of construction workers fistbumping the friendly old waiters. Recommend you ask for their lunch menu to try their sancocho stew, rice and pastels (similar to a tamale). Of course, you can't go wrong with the mallorcas off their breakfast menu: they actually grill the mallorca too unlike other places! So you get bites of melty cheese; ham beats bacon. Payment: You get a receipt and have to pay at the front. They take both cash & card! read more

Spacious to sit and eat. We were here for breakfast. The service was quick a very friendly people at service. Had a lovely experience in old San Juan. The scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese was good but the bread along with that was delicious. Loved that piece of fresh bread with butter. Mallorcas were good. We tried cheese and also a guava filling both were delicious. Highly recommend trying this place. Best mallorcas. read more
First stop once we've reached San Juan bc it's a "must." It's a unique experience tasting their breakfast with the powdered sugar. Not sure what was the name of the food that my friend ordered but the pork consist mostly with bones. The lemonade was great because it was mixed with a WHOLELOTTA sugar. Overall, just okay. read more
