I dig it! I knew that a quiet breakfast with me, a mallorca and some coffee was a must during my trip to PR. As my plans for the week were gettin' were gettin' were gettin' kinda hectic (or heavy? After all these years, I still can't figure it out. ENUNCIATE, Snap!), I knew my mallorca window was narrow. I'd decided to wander through the cobblestone streets of OSJ and see what I could find. I wanted authentic, quiet and delicious. After perusing the reviews on this website called, 'Yelp,' I decided on Cafeteria Mallorca. Success. The atmosphere here is much like a local diner than a tourist destination. Plenty of boricuas lined the counter and sat at tables. Most were singles but there were some couples as well. I loved how unpretentious the place was. No one was looking around to see who was looking at them. People came in, found a seat and got to the business of eating, drinking coffee and waking up. I approve. I ordered the mallorca with ham and cheese, two scrambled eggs and a cafe con leche. I impressed myself by ordering in Spanish. My server replied back in English. Ouch. I guess my Spanish needs some work. In any event, I ordered, sat back, opened my newspaper and settled in for a lazy, casual morning. In no time, my cafe con leche arrived and it was as hot and sweet as... well, I'll let you fill that gap (careful). But, it was good. Really good. And, bottomless. Shortly thereafter, my eggs and mallorca came out. Not having a point of reference for mallorcas, I can only judge what I ate by how I enjoyed it. I'd give it a four out of five. The bread was buttery and topped with powered sugar and the insides were pleasantly savory. Really, barring a dirty diaper, it's hard to go wrong with hot ham and cheese in any form. The mallorca was a little skinnier than I'd imagined, but maybe that's just my fatass mainland expectations getting in the way. Eggs were eggs -- diner-style. They were a little too hard and dry to be homemade, but they're exactly what I expected from a diner. Shake some pepper on those bad boys and we're good. Place those peppery eggs atop the toast that came with... and we're really good. Once I have my house in PR (the future is good, my friends), I can imagine sitting my perky nalgas on the diner chair, ordering up some eggs, coffee and mallorca, opening my newspaper and settling in for a lazy, casual morning. Apparently this place is famous. This looks like an authentic 50s diner-type place (not one of those places trying to capitalize on the style). The staff here were older gentlemen with stories in their faces. They were nice and very down to basics---they'll hook you up with some good food and make you feel at home. All the staff were cool. We ended up going here for supper and breakfast while in Old San Juan. The food isn't out of this world, but it's comforting. Definitely one of the best places to grab some cheap and fast breakfast in old san juan. I was here pretty much everyday during my stay at Da House. Everything here is on the cheap side and it's quite good as well. You'll want to get the mallorca for sure, either with ham or without. Can't really go wrong either way. I've also had the traditional puerto rican breakfast as well with these baguette toast. Not sure what you call it in spanish but it was pretty good. The staff here is simply amazing. They do speak a little english but it's the service that was great. Very nice and pleasant. And they're dressed in bow ties and black suits. Very cool. If you don't speak any spanish, don't worry. The menu is a combination of spanish and english. I didn't get to try any of the pastries but they did look quite good. Next time maybe. read more

I absolutely love this place. It's small but cozy. The staff is super attentive. We went here a few times the Mallorca's are the best in the area their bread is to die for. I had the nostalgic feel of Fairfax here. 1950's. All men staff. Retro. Air conditioning? A hell yes! We got: 1) Mallorca con jamon y queso 2) Mallorca con queso 3) 1/2 a fruit salad 4) Omelette with Papas 5) Assortment of Pastries The mallorcas are bomb. I wish i could inhale them through my nose like coke. Thats how much I loved them. Starchy, cheesy, sugary. Whats not to love???? The fruit salad is cool featuring guava which is always great. The omelette was ok. Honestly, the one thing I forgot to bring on my trip was the Tapatio. Why???? I had packets at home too. No cheese on the omelettes and they put green peas. (Don't ask me.) The SERVICE HERE IS HORRIBLE although the pastries are decent and super cheap. I think if you're going to open a bakery/restaurant in a tourist area you need to be able to deal with tourists that may not speak the language. The lady with short hair and glasses at the cashier was not only rude but rolled her eyes at me multiple times even though I was very polite. I even asked her what her favorite pastry was which she chose not to answer. When I go to a restaurant I'm not only paying for the food but also the experience, and my experience here would prevent me from ever coming back. This charming and unassuming diner is best appreciated on an empty stomach and with an open mind. First order your cafe con leche. It is worth at least one, but probably another round well be necessary. Then turn to the menu. It starts with traditional eggs or pancakes. But instead look to the last section. The mallorca is a traditional pastry that can be served either savory or sweet. It can be ordered toasted with butter or jam but I strongly suggest ordering ham egg and cheese. I did not know what I was getting into when first ordering but the place was named for them so I needed to give them a try. It arrives, presented on a plastic plate and covered in powered sugar. I cowered. I can't imagine how this even began... but I understand how it survived after that first bite. The sandwich is prepared then grilled flat. After placed on a plate, it is adorned with not a sprinkle, but a layer of powered sugar. Do not brush it off! It is essential to the entire sandwich. Take the first bite. Somehow, in this magical land the combination of ham egg cheese and sugar makes sense. Just eat it. You will not be disappointed. I wasn't, and I returned two more times before leaving the island. Out of all the places I ate at in San Juan, this was probably my favorite. It was a toss up between this place and La Bombonera at first, but this place had better coffee and quicker service than the guys at La Bombonera. I understand that they are owned by the same people though, so the food is equally good. Anyway, when you order coffee you have to make a distinction between black coffee and "regular" or "with milk." They are priced differently and I guess they add the milk themselves if you order it with milk. If you're not used to PR's coffee yet then I would suggest it with milk, but the black coffee is really good, and the flavor is actually somewhat clean, somewhat of a rarity on the island. For breakfast there is no better option than the Mallorca. I second the review that says leave room for the flan de queso. The sandwiches are large, and more than enough to be boxed up for a cheap dinner. The fruit batida is really good and refreshing and not icy or slushie-like, just like a batida should be. In the mornings and on weekends, this place is great for sightseeing as it is a little bit less touristy than La Bombonera and local families pack this place. read more

I thought I would not have liked this place and what it was known for because I am not a huge fan of mixing my dessert and meals together. Unexpectedly, I ended up liking the sandwich. We got a egg, and ham sandwich that was dusted with powdered sugar. I thought the bread was baked well, and I did like the powdered sugar with it. Mallorca deserves a visit when you get to OSJ. Follow the name of the place and order a mallorca, in case you dont know it, the mallorca comes dusted with sugar ALL over so remember to order it without it if your like me and are not into the sugar high state. Also theres good traditional cafe con leche to recharge batteries for the rest of the day. The lunch specials are not that great. If your looking for inexpensive puertorrican cuisine I always recommend Cafe Manolin or Rest. Punto de Vista instead. Perfectly melted cheese with egg on a soft flaky croissant and a sprinkling of powdered sugar. This is a local breakfast dish that we just loved! Found this spot on Yelp when we were on a cruise stop in old San Juan. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers, we went in to try their signature mallorca sandwich, and it was a Home Run! I forced everyone in the family to order one as well and they were all awesome - the mallorca with butter, the one with egg, ham, and cheese, and then egg, bacon, and cheese. The combo of savory & sweet with powdered sugar on top was incredible, and my kids were ready to order a 2nd sandwich before we left. We weren't able to because of the lack of time, but we did walk out with a box of baked goods and they were all fantastic. Our visit was a Wednesday morning with decent mix locals and a few cruiseships in port. We ordered and ate quickly, but a cruise zombie table with kids waited awhile to order. So if you're in a hurry or have wee ones, keep in mind. Lots of pastries choose from. The service here is so awful. No one stops by to check on you (i.e. Would you like something to drink with your meal?) or explains anything to you if you ask a question and they're not serving you as your waiter. Say if you have a question about an entre or some such, and the person you ask is not your waiter, they will just shake their head at you and tell you to ask your waiter... Even if they're not doing anything. The mallorcas are ok, more like a McDonald's McGriddle with powdered sugar than anything else... But more expensive (ham, cheese, and egg for about $7)... Better to save your money and just go to McDonald's for the same thing. Also had the tres leches cake... It was really grainy and the cake texture was a bit weird. Had another bite later to confirm my first impression, and yeah, it's not good. I'm used to tres leches cake tasting better than this. Overall, food and service is disgusting. read more

That's it! I'm buying an extra suitcase, so I can stuff it full of Mallorca with ham and cheese and send it off to Pittsburgh. Then I could enjoy this tasty treat every day. This was a 5 star diner experience. This place isn't fancy, but it gets the job done by serving great food at a cheap price. The servers wear old school uniforms with bow-ties. We checked out Cafeteria Mallorca for breakfast on day 2 during our stay in Old San Juan. Located very close to competitor, La Bambonera, they serve a breakfast menu that's very similar. We ordered coffee, a plain mallorca with just butter and sugar and one with ham and cheese. The pastries did not disappoint. They were fluffy and warm, almost melt in your mouth. One confusing note for those web searching - tripadvisor and other sites list this place as Cafe Mallorca at 400 Calle San Francisco. Nevertheless, it's quite easy to get to, at the corner of CSF and Calle Tonca, and it's right in the middle of Old San Juan, making it a perfect place to start your day, or stop off late-morning. I might actually suggest the latter as we went around 11:30am and the place was close to empty - other reviewers have mentioned waiting in a long line, and had I done so I probably would have been disappointed. Cafeteria Mallorca is simple. It's a large, Puerto Rican diner, with adorable and friendly waiters and a great menu. We were there for breakfast, and note that for some breakfast items (pancakes I remember) they charge an extra $1 for after 11am. My mom got an omelette which was huge and came with fries, and I ordered the mallorca con jamon y queso (ham and cheese mallorca). Essentially, it's a sweet bread, with a slice of ham and what I think was prepackaged american cheese melted in the middle, covered in powdered sugar. Know what you're getting into - this isn't gourmet food. BUT - it is traditional, cheap, filling, and delicious! Their cafe con leche is quite good too. I have always adored this place. I am Puertorican and travel to the island several times a year. Mallorca has always been a stop for me when I'm in Old SJ. Their signature malllorcas are absolutely delicious! Why the 3 stars you might ask? Well, the last time I was there, I asked for a glass of water and got some but in a lipstick stained cup!!! I showed it to the waiter and he immediately went to get another. This is when I declined, paid for my coffee and Mallorca and went on my way. This really disappointed me. Will I be back? We all know when visiting a place that you should go where the locals recommend, this place was packed with locals so we knew it had to be good. Trust me, what this place lacks in looks it makes it up with their food. Everything was delicious! We had eggs, potatoes, ham, cheese, bread coffee which that alone makes it worth it (Puertorican coffee IMHNO the best in the world) of course we had to have their specialty, a Mallorca, sweet bread sprinkled with powdered sugar, so simple so delicious. Now, I had a bit of a problem with the waiter. He was an older man and he was a bit on the slow side and we noticed that he enjoyed chatting with the customers... I said HAD because at the end of our meal I asked the gentleman how long had he been working there, he told me "since the day we opened" friends, this place has been opened for at least 40 years; needless to say that I was super impressed, the loyalty the dedication and pride... where do you find that these days? Anyway, after eating here do not take the trolley, walk around Old San Juan, enjoy the place and its friendly people while you burn the thousands of calories that I'm sure you will consume here. Well, it kills me to write a bad review but we stopped in for a quick pastry and selected a pastry covered in powder sugar and cinnamon. It kind of looked like a tiramisu. The cream was a bit sour as if it had turn. Not to mention the pastry was really rubbery. I couldn't cut it with a plastic knife, so I just picked it up and tried to chew thru it. After the initial first bite, I find myself covered in powder sugar and the cream has feel out completely. That's how much bite pressure I needed for this pastry. I will return to purchase another pastry to give this bakery a second chance. read more

A great place for a small breakfast + coffee in Old San Juan. Despite all of the tourist driven restaurants in Old San Juan, there is something very authentic and old school at Cafeteria Mallorca. The menu is quite limited - I did not pay much attention to the eggs benedict and pancakes fruit platters on the menu (obviously these items are there to cater to a foreigner's appetite), go straight for the mallorcas! We sat at the bar, saw every simple step from buttering to pressing to the powder sugar sparkling onto the mallorcas. Dont expect 5 stars hotel food & service when you're here, it is a quick-casual local spot. Sit at the bar, grab a freshly squeezed OJ and a toasty mallorca.
