A great place for a small breakfast + coffee in Old San Juan. Despite all of the tourist driven restaurants in Old San Juan, there is something very authentic and old school at Cafeteria Mallorca. The menu is quite limited - I did not pay much attention to the eggs benedict and pancakes fruit platters on the menu (obviously these items are there to cater to a foreigner's appetite), go straight for the mallorcas! We sat at the bar, saw every simple step from buttering to pressing to the powder sugar sparkling onto the mallorcas. Dont expect 5 stars hotel food & service when you're here, it is a quick-casual local spot. Sit at the bar, grab a freshly squeezed OJ and a toasty mallorca. Note - all the tourists seem to be seated mainly at the tables eating very heavy breakfast dishes, don't be one of them if you want an authentic experience. read more

I walked into this place today not having sat down at a restaurant in Old San Juan. I heard about this pastry called the Mallorca and decided to get an order of it along with a pork chop and some rice. The meal came with a lot of sides - beans, buttered bread, and fried plantains. For the quality of the main dish, I thought it was decent and merits a solid three stars. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the Mallorca and also the diner-like atmosphere with a great view of the street and Plaza San Francisco across, and for this reason it gets a fourth star. read more

Found this spot on Yelp when we were on a cruise stop in old San Juan. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers, we went in to try their signature mallorca sandwich, and it was a Home Run! I forced everyone in the family to order one as well and they were all awesome - the mallorca with butter, the one with egg, ham, and cheese, and then egg, bacon, and cheese. The combo of savory & sweet with powdered sugar on top was incredible, and my kids were ready to order a 2nd sandwich before we left. We weren't able to because of the lack of time, but we did walk out with a box of baked goods and they were all fantastic. Cafe con leche and 2 mallorcas with ham, egg and cheese. They put powdered sugar on the top. You won't be disappointed. I craved this breakfast for the rest of the trip. I sat at the "bar" and was greeted by an older man who gracefully whizzed through setting up a slew of customers for breakfast. Sat at the counter, our server Ramon was awesome, didn't speak much english, but I spoke enough spanish to communicate with him just fine. They have a menu in english so no worries. Everyone recommends La Bombonera but Cafeteria Mallorca gets my nod as the place for breakfast or lunch or pastries to go. I'd give them 5 stars but my brazo de gitano wasn't too my liking. Too dry, too sweet. Other than that, I liked the atmosphere here much better than La Bombonera. The lighting seems better here, making it feel a little bit cleaner. Plus the waiters have these cute black and white uniforms. They are also on a first name basis with many other loyal customers and we saw the same lady twice. In fact, she walked right up to us and I thought that she was going to kick us out of "her table", but she just came over to peek at our daughter. My main obsession is with their mallorcas. I've been known to eat things that end up all over my daughter's head or face, so it is no wonder that we went to Cafeteria Mallorca multiple times for their buttery, powdered sugary mallorcas. The Mallorca Special is not like the other mallorcas, so only order it if you are craving a triple decked sandwich cut into cute triangles. Order a blackout for me! I went looking for my favorite Mallorca place in Old San Juan and found it closed for renovation. I was advised to try Cafeteria Mallorca nearby. I walked it straight to a table and was quickly attended. The place has that old skool feel that made it authentic Old San Juan. I ordered some fruit and a Mallorca egg sandwich. You have to be careful on the powdered sugar because they can absolutely cover it under a pile of powder. When the sandwich arrived, it was hot and delicious! Very buttery and flakey. Terrible service. We went on a Sunday around 10:30am. Problem is they are understaffed. No one directs you there, luckily I speak Spanish so I asked the waiter if we had to seat ourselves. Once he told me we did, I then told the 4 people in front of me that they had to seat themselves. When a table became available for me, I went and stood by it waiting for a busboy or waiter to clean up. After waiting 5 mins, i decided to ask them to clean it. Well, it kills me to write a bad review but we stopped in for a quick pastry and selected a pastry covered in powder sugar and cinnamon. It kind of looked like a tiramisu. The cream was a bit sour as if it had turn. Not to mention the pastry was really rubbery. I couldn't cut it with a plastic knife, so I just picked it up and tried to chew thru it. After the initial first bite, I find myself covered in powder sugar and the cream has feel out completely. That's how much bite pressure I needed for this pastry. This was a divey diner that was quite empty when I came by to get my mallorca fix. As mentioned numerous time, the mallorca is a flat pastry that is sweetened with powdered sugar. When the gentleman behind the counter asked us how we wanted our mallorca - grilled with butter and sugar or without- we went with buttered and dusted with powdered sugar to go with our coffee. It was a nice place to stop and go, but don't go out of your way to find it. You are not missing out. You can probably get a decent mallorca anywhere. For us, it was less than a 5 minute walk from where we parked so we didn't mind the boondoggle. For us, the grilled and sweetened mallorca hit the spot since we were in that weird too late for breakfast too early for lunch time frame. I was determined to have a quality mallorca, and first tried a street kiosk....ok but not impressive. Then found Cafeteria Mallorca open and dropped in. Wonderful buttery, lightly-pressed and powder-sugared (not recommended by Weight-Watchers) which we shared, along with some fine, dark local coffee since they do not serve espresso. The place was set up like an old diner with stools at a counter and tables served by uniformed waiters. As testimony to quality, we noted several police officers as patrons.
