Heck yeah!!!! After reading about all the rave reviews, Mallorca delivered. We took a break here on my engagement shoot for something cold to drink and a snack. The mallorcas were delicious. I tried the one with cheese and it was just amazing--soft, warm, moist and just melted away in my mouth. The freshly squeezed pineapple juice was also tasty. Service was very friendly. This place has amazing breakfast food. The mallorcas are some of the best breakfast foods I ever had and this was my first time eating it. I ordered a swiss cheese mallorca with 2 eggs over medium. The order took a little long but it was definitely worth the wait. The staff is nice and they even entertained my limited spanish. only reason it takes a while to get your food is because its so busy there. The restaurant is literally packed to the doors and it has an amazing bakery. The pasteles are REALLY good, better than what you find in mainland usa. Parking is off the street so just take a taxi to old san juan. read more

Excellent breakfast! A Mallorca is a croissant sandwich. We loved the wad with egg and cheese. We also had a great omelette, offered as veggies with ham, but we switched out the hand for Swiss cheese. read more

Honestly had no idea what on earth a mallorca was but it was AMAZINGGGG. Didn't know ham and eggs sandwiched between a sweet buttered bread roll would be so good. I also ordered the plain (I don't know why) one and it just wasn't the same as the sweet and savory option. I only wish it was just a tad bigger =( read more

Great little place for breakfast in Old San Juan. It is cheap, fast, and the food is good. The mallorca with ham and cheese is delicious - basically a ham and cheese panini on a sweet bread covered in powdered sugar. The juices are fresh squeezed. If you sit at the counter you can watch them being made. My mom had scrambled eggs, bacon, and toasted french bread which were all very good. Their donuts are quite hard and flavorless. But other than that a great spot to start your day! read more

We stopped here on our PR vacation. We were trying to go to the iconic La Bombonera, only to find that it had just closed down the month before. Cafe Mallorca was one of the only other breakfast spots open in the area. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but the food was pretty good. They offered a very nice fruit bowl with lots of fresh and local fruits. The servings were a nice size and the food was cooked well. I got some basic eggs and toast with ham and my husband I think had the same but with sausage. The sausages looked really strange and were really tiny, but they tasted good. Bland, bland and bland. My friend and I ate here for a late lunch and we simply were not impressed. The food was poorly seasoned. I had a dish I don't remember the name off-- but it was mashed sweet plantains stuffed with ground beef and fried. The beef didn't seem to be seasoned at all, and I had to douse hot sauce on it to make it palatable. The rice was decent and the beans were good. I had a bite of my friend's fried steak and not only was it an unappetizing gray color, but it was truly flavorless. Terrible. On an up note, the server was extremely friendly, the bread was soft, crunchy and buttered and the tres leche cake I enjoyed after dinner was absolutely delicious! I grew up in Puerto Rico and after 11 years of not visiting the island, I was excited to take my children and of course we had to go to Old San Juan and have some mallorcas. My usual place was La Bombonera but because it was closed for remodeling (and so was La Mallorquina) we went to La Mallorca. The Mallorcas were good but that was it! I did not expect the server to be friendly--it is just the way things are--but the level of rudeness was amazing and he could not use the language barrier as an excuse. When he came to get the order I hesitated for a second, he made a face of disgust and walked away. He came back about 15 minutes later. We were there for lunch but all we wanted were mallorca sandwiches, and he did not like that. I later inconvenienced him by asking for an order of French fries. He did bring the order but in a plate that was very dirty--It looked like it had been used but my husband attempted to convince me that it probably did not get washed well in the dish washer. My theory is that he gave us someones left over fries, but I have no proof. I went to look at their pastry display and it was pathetic. A couple of burned and flat "pastelillos de guayaba," some cookies and cakes, and a few decrepit looking "tornillitos." It was sad. Again the mallorcas were good but a smile, a kind word, and a clean plate would have gone a longs ways. read more

One of my favorite breakfast places on the island! Best pricing, amazing quality food and portions, best location, ample seating for everyone, safe neighborhood, police out front around the clock.. The menu is large, something for everyone for sure! The staff and cooks are kind and polite and patient. I ordered just regular eggs, toast and fries yesterday and today I tried their famous Mallorca with bacon egg and cheese and it was perfect!!! Eh... Our group of four stopped in here on a rainy day in Old San Juan to escape the weather and grab a snack. It's a diner-style restaurant with a pretty big selection of food. I had a fresh lemonade, which was good but also a bit too tart for my taste. One of the girls in our group had a mallorca, toasted and buttered. It was pretty good but I've had better. I love this place for its old-world charm, and its afternoon cafe con leche. Try a sweet mallorca, or, choose any of the other pastries by pointing your finger at them because God knows you can't understand the Spanish spoken-in Puerto Rico. I had a delicious cafe with some crispy, bone-dry, doughnut shaped pastry covered in a royal icing. All for like 2 bucks. FWIW, I didn't try La Bombonera so I can't compare the two. Family style criollo cuisine served up by friendly folks. Cafe Mallorca is a good alternative...actually a great destination...as opposed to the glitzy or otherwise campy tourist trap eateries in Old San Juan. Most everything comes with rice and red beans. These pastries were good. The were not the best I've had but I enjoyed them very much with an espresso from another location. The prices were very good for the quality. We decided on three things and were out the door for under 4 dollars. I would like to try some more of their broad selection which speaks well of this little shop. The place looks a little dirty... and reminds me of a diner that hasn't been renovated since the 60s. Probably the same patrons, too. Service was ... you know, kinda rushed. The trade mark "pan de Mallorca" makes the trip to this historic institution worthwhile. I take mine toasted with butter (they are quite generous in the butter serving) if the powdered sugar topping is not your thing, ask them to hold it. My childhood pleasure was a mid afternoon snack Mallorca. Accompanied by a vanilla milk shake. As tourists, we walked on the street and tried to find a restaurant that we found on yelp. A local old man came over to help. However, he said "oh, that restaurant is for tourists. It's easy to tell - those restaurants have sun umbrellas are for tourists. If you want to eat something good and authentic, you should go this restaurant." The next day, we visited this restaurant. It's dirty and old but very obvious most guests are local. We ordered crab rice, squid rice, fried chicken, shrimp (mofongo), steak were all great. The steak was a bit hard but the rest were awesome. The crab rice and squid rice were the best. In addition, the drinks were awesome - fresh squeezed lemonade, papaya smooth, and piña colada were great. read more

Unfriendly, busy and boring. That sums up my experience here. The Mallorca was dry and surprisingly underwhelming. Imagine decent bread, with an egg, a couple thin pieces of ham, another piece of bread, and then some powder sugar on top. Wow, I could do that at home. The mallorca was chewy and sweet and delicious, and the coffee was blended with some sort of diary which fortunately, did not dilute the bitterness or the flavor. Delicious. Good way to start your morning in Old San Juan. I can't speak of the service in the restaurant because I always took mine to go so that I could walk over to Cafe Co'lao and then eat my breakfast at the pier. I can only speak of the plain mallorca. The first day I went I got it around 9 am, it was tasty and hit the spot. The next 2 days, I was there around 8 am and it tasted liked they had just been baked--soft and warm. I recommend getting there earlier or when a new tray of mallorcas has just been put out--keeping in mind this is only if you're doing a to go order. One day if I'm lucky enough to make it back to PR, I will come back here for my desayuno para llevar. read more

Eat where the locals eat!! This place is just a quaint little cafe with unpretentious decor & ambiance. There is a lunch counter as well as table seating & the patrons are free to sit wherever you can find a seat. The Puertorican Coffee is delicious and a must-have if you enjoy a nice cup of coffee.
