First time eating here. Heard about it from family, as its been a popular staple of Chapel Hill, NC. We know good soul food because we cook it. Ordered the vegetable plate and fried catfish. Catfish was overly breaded. Didn't taste fresh, frozen. Greens and the vegetables tasted out of the can...this included Lima and pinto beans. Food should be fresh! Vegetables should be fresh. What can I say about this place but that the food was amazing? I found this restaurant online and I had to come and give it a try. It's so hard to find good and authentic southern food away from home. When I bit into that cornbread, I knew I was in heaven. It was just okay.... We ordered smothered pork chops, fried chicken and the seafood platter. We had several sides including turnip greens, mac and cheese, rice, potato salad and fried okra. The food was mediocre soul food. It isn't highly seasoned southern soul food. I would say the service was excellent. Especially, Evan and Maurice. They were exceptional. Had a horrible experience at this restaurant. The staff is very rude and lies. I thought it was a cute restaurant but the staff made it ugly. I had to wait around 30 minutes to try to order while the waitress stood around gossiping. There was only a few other customers so they weren't that busy. The menu was overpriced. I was so excited to try this place. Needless to say the food was very good. The service on the other hand was horrible from our waitress. She topped my sprite off with water as she flew by ,also chucking a sauce at my friend for her chicken fingers. Good southern food....just not seasoned....I generally cook my collards with ham hocks or seasoning meat like thick bacon slabs...these were just plain ole collards. I had to add salt and hot sauce...my trout was also not seasoned. This was an underwhelming eating experience. Just awful. My party of 5 came in early on a Sat morning and they were dead with servers standing around. We sat outside and had extremely slow service. Like our waitress forgot about us and the other table outside multiple times.it was dead and it took over 35 minutes to get our breakfast food. Just why? The fried greens tomatoes were bland and basic, the salmon biscuit was gross, and the omelet was over cooked and bland. We had to ask for coffee and water multiple times from the food runners. But they auto charge parties of 5 an 18% gratuity (I would've only done 10 because she was AWFUL), so oh well, one incentive for their servers to slack on parties greater than 5 - - you'll automatically get a great tip, so why try?? I'm not usually one for good ol' southern cookin' (you know, it's hard to communicate a southern drawl in type), and Mama Dip's has done little to change my mind. There's nothing wrong with it, mind you. It's just not as good as I had been led to believe it would be. The food is pretty inconsistent. Twice when I went here the chicken was dry, and once it was absolute perfection. So, yeah, inconsistent. The service is likewise. If the staff wakes up in the morning and feels bad, they feel no reason not to take it out on you. Likewise, if they just got some good news, be prepared for excellent service. Service extremely slow on a Sunday afternoon, 8 open tables yet 10 minute wait. Besides a manager, it seemed as if staff's 1st day, nobody seemed quite sure how to churn the operation. Someone during 2nd half took over and sped things up to a customer:s pace (Maurice?). the catfish gumbo was excellent. fried zucchini and broccoli was good, Kid's spaghetti was not bad. I wish I could say more about the food however we found the fried drumsticks and waffles dry, the Mac and cheese... dry, the bread options... dry, the French fries... dry. I personally feel if it's dry, it's probably been overcooked or sat in wait too long. food overall was far too expensive for the quality. $61 total for an entree, few appetizers, a kids meal, 2 soft drinks. read more

I've experienced waaaay better soul food. I wasn't impressed at all by the food, it was average at best. What really drops the rating is the price. The food was way overpriced. I could not believe the tiny portions on the plate at a soul food restaurant. I felt like I'd gotten a kids meal by accident! And a lunch for 4 people was over $80!!! That's ridiculous! The fried chicken and cream cheese pound cake were the standouts. The chicken pot pie, mac & cheese, fried okra and bbq were nothing to rave about. I think the fried okra was frozen. I went to this restaurant based on the reviews on Google and Yelp. However, I was very disappointed in the food. I ordered fried chicken and chicken and dumplings. The fried chicken was seasoned well; however, it was not fresh. It seemed as if the chicken had been under a heating lamp for hours. The chicken and dumplings were very bland. The restaurant uses chicken breast, which is lower in fat and flavor. As a result, more seasoning is needed for the recipe. This was the first time I had chicken and dumplings that did not have a flavorful, thick gravy. I actually discarded the dumplings after a few bites. When I asked to be seated outside they very rudely said that only service dogs were allowed. Overrated, overpriced, and simply not what it used to be. I've eaten here several times since moving back to the area, and been completely underwhelmed each time...especially at the price point. Service in the restaurant has been passable, but it was my experience with ordering a picnic basket that was just awful. I ordered it to be picked up at 11:30 when my girlfriend's family came in town. When I got there, the girl just said "oh yeah, we'll get that started." Finally at 12:15, I left with my 105.00 picnic basket. The food was mediocre at best, and some things (such as the fried chicken this time), was drier than KFC at worst. Overpriced food out of a can. The black eyed peas had no flavor, the turnip greens were ok, and the catfish, broiled, was dripping with lemon juice and lemon pepper seasoning. It hurt to eat it, way too acidic and tart, which is a shame because the fish was tasty and well cooked. The manager was rude to our kid after he accidentally dropped food on the floor. They charge for every extra. They didn't refill drinks, and the wait staff all seem like they were standing around and didn't care to be at work. The past few times I've been there, the waitress I had was in training. It tells you something when a place can't keep employees for very long. Had the fried chicken and it was very good - would do again. The mac and cheese was solid. The apple sauce was a nice change of pace - you could tell it was homemade and wasn't loaded with sugar. Mama Dip's is alright. It's a restaurant that a lot of people will recommend to you when you're in Chapel Hill, and for good reason -- Southern cuisine in a nice, authentic-looking setting. It's definitely worth a shot. And I'm Southern-grown and love this type of food, so why not? I've been twice, and both times I've had similar experiences. Got the Chicken and Dumplings the first time, and the Pulled Pork Plate the second. They come with a side and either a roll, cornbread, or biscuit, your choice. The bread was a little dry and cold, but still edible. The butter helps too. The Chicken and Dumplings was very good, I really enjoyed it. Was a bit disappointed in their Pulled Pork Plate though... maybe it's because of how authentic this place seems, I was expecting it to be on the next level. If the food had blown me away, I probably wouldn't have thought too much of this, but the portion sizes are pretty small for the price you pay. Service was fine, and it's a cool little place. We got there at 12:30 and the front desk host promise to stay at they are still serving breakfast menu it took us half an hour to be seated because this place was busy when we sat down the waiter didn't offer us the breakfast menu and when you asked for it he said the the chef who is in charge of breakfast has left and that's why they're not serving anymore breakfast. That was disappointing but the rest of the experience was very pleasant. The ribs and fried chicken combo is to die for, the baked chicken and rice casserole was delicious. PATHETIC! Mama Dip must be rolling over in her grave. Mediocre food and unbelievably slow service. I went to Mama Dip's last night for dinner. Arrived a little after 6PM. I hadn't been there for 2 or 3 years. Wow has it gone downhill. Restaurant was about half full. Ordered a plate of fried chicken with two vegetables (greens and pintos). Presumably all of these had to have been already cooked -- you don't cook any of them "to order", right? It took them about 30 minutes to bring my meal. I noticed some other tables having a long wait for food as well. And they don't have much on their menu that is cooked to order. I mean it's basically Southern comfort food. The fried chicken was just "OK". Definitely nothing to write home about. Popeye's has much better fried chicken and way faster service. I will not be returning to Mama Dip's. read more

We have frequented Mama Dip's for years and I like it just as much now as my first time. Fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, and the fried trout breakfast are all top picks for us. I want EVERYONE contemplating to go to mama dips to consider this. Granted, this occurred about a year ago but I have not been back since because it was the worst experience I ever received. My friends and I (5 hungry college kids) went on a sunday afternoon, there was about two people in front of us so we put our names on the list and sat outside. After a unnecessary 30 minute wait I decided to go in and I asked the lady at the desk actually forgot about us because she had to flip back to the prior page because our name was on the very bottom. After finally getting sat, we got sat outside, our waitress took another 10 minutes to even get to us when we were perched for any sort of beverage. Then after we got our waters we all drank them instantly, so I asked for a pitcher of water to make things easy and the waitress acted as if i didn't exist and didn't respond. Utter disrespect. Then when our food was finally served, about 45 minutes into our meal, we didn't get any of the condiments that we asked for when we ordered. And when we requested it,the waitress disappeared and was nowhere to be found so I had to go inside to get some ketchup, awful service. Lastly, one of my friends asked the manager if we could get compensated because of our dreaded hour wait and she retorted that we had not been there for an hour and rejected my friend. Oh, Mama Dip's: where I had my first taste of Carolina BBQ and fried okra. Actually, I had gone with a true, blue Southern family and was kind of forced to eat, but that's beside the point. Although the food is good, I'm never going back. I got there at 9:15p, 15 minutes before the restaurant closed to place a to-go order. When I went to open the door, the hostess yelled at me that they were closed. When I pointed out the sign that said they were open until 9:30p, she said she had to clean the floors. There were still easily a dozen patrons in the main dining room. Since I was hungry, I asked if I could still place a to-go order. The hostess finally agreed, but didn't give me a menu and then said I would have to wait outside. It was 80 degrees, humid, and the mosquitoes have started their summer appearance already. When I got my food handed to me outside, the type of bread I'd asked for was wrong. I started writing this review while I was sweating outside, waiting for my food. While the barbecue and mac n cheese fulfilled my cravings, it wasn't worth being treated the way I was. The rolls seemed stale and didn't come with butter plus the fried okra was a bit mushy, but that's probably just my angry pants talking. For a Southern restaurant, I expected a lot more service and charm. Next time I'll stop at Time Out if it needs to be fast or make the drive up to Allen & Sons. Food itself is three, three and a half stars. Service was barely one star. read more

This is not soul food as it is advertised. It is southern but quite flavorless. There's nothing really special about any of their food that makes you want to come back other than the style. I've been a few times hoping that something would redeem them and nope. Several people I know have given them the same verbal review. Their customer service isn't that great either. I changed an item on a to go order because when I got there to pick it up I saw a special that was not mentioned on the phone. The cashier was friendly but the owner/cook? came out of the kitchen to clarify the change. She was not nice and kept telling me it would be $2 extra. I said I understood the first time.
