Came here today for the first time and I wasn't impressed. The lady who sat us spoke little English and when I asked her a question "can we sit outside," she told me to hold. The bread is very hard and has some odd sauce on it. We ordered the rissoto balls but they smelled and tasted like throw up. I ordered one of the lunch specials but it was bland and I had to take it back. My mother liked her food, that's why we gave it two stars. My sister loves Italian food and took me there and I was so DISAPPOINTED WITH THEIR FOOD! I ordered the pollo piccata and the food was so damn plain and not tasty at all! The food was so bland, the chicken looked as if it was cooked in water. No seasonings. The spaghetti was plain. The sauce was nasty, and tasted like water. I never do this, but I had to return the food and refuse to order anything else from the menu. Any real Italian would be ashamed of this restaurant. The service wasn't great either, my sister was on her lunch break, and we waited at least 10 minutes before the waitress took our order. I cannot believe this place still exists!!! A friend and I had our monthly 3pm lunch here again today. The waiter has seen us enough to have our orders memorized and, once again, the food was good and service was attentive. I had the gluten-free plain cheese pizza (I go for plain because it gets a little too pricey with toppings). Mamma Lucia's has the best g-f pizza crust in this area. Although I occasionally pass up the pizza for side dishes of asparagus and mozzarella caprese in the summer, I invariably pick the g-f pizza through the winter. I've never been disappointed. They seem to have a good understanding what g-f requires, cooking all g-f pizzas in their own foil pizza pan to prevent cross-contamination from surfaces the regular pizzas touch. We've been going there for over a year, and I've never been glutened. I had an opportunity to speak with a manager a month or two ago to let him know how great the g-f pizza is and ask questions about their gluten-free pasta: with every g-f order, they start with a fresh pot, fresh water, fresh utensils, etc. I haven't ordered it yet but will report back eventually when I do; the pizza's just so good I keep forgetting about their pasta! TV in the bar, which is visible from some tables in the restaurant side. There's little noise from the bar side over in the front room of the restaurant side, unless there's an especially exciting game and especially avid fans. The overall experience was ok. There were tables of students celebrating pre-homecoming who made them feel rushed. The server tried to keep up with refills etc. but was obviously flustered. She never brought my kids drinks so we let it go. My daughters pizza came 15 mins before the rest of the meal as it comes from a different kitchen. The pizza was pretty good actually. My son's lasagna had clearly been microwaved and I suspect my chicken for the Parma had also as it was hard and inedible on edges. This pizza is decent for the area but the service is terrible for take out. We ordered a pizza Friday night at 6:10. They stated it would be 45 minutes for pick up. I know Friday's can be hectic so I ended up getting there about an hour later. The pizza still wasn't ready. I finally got the pizza at about 7:40 pm. I am a pretty big Mamma Lucia fan. Food is great, staff is friendly, prices are reasonable. I'm only marking down one star because I think some of the seafood pastas (which are my fave!) are a bit pricey for a family joint. The pizza is the best you will get in the state. I liked the food, quite a bit. Thought the service was superb. However, I would only eat there again if it was "off peak" and a lot less crowded. I ate there with my wife, cousin and her husband last night at about 6:20. Nice dinner and the first rule was certainly met. Good food. I had the Scampi, wife had the mussels. The rest had one of the specials, a seafood "sampler". Everyone really liked what they had and enjoyed the food. The service was quick, alert and attentive and not too much. I got my iced tea refilled as if by magic, she was great and knew the menu & specials. Now for the not so great... The location is in a very busy "strip mall" which, by itself is OK, but is horrible to park in and worse to walk from your car to the restaurant in. The restaurant is itself very busy and VERY crowded. Not only crowded with people, but crowded with tables, diners, servers and waiting diners and takeout getters. That also makes it incredibly loud and difficult to have dinner conversation. Our first seating was at a corner booth where the four of us could barely fit. We were reseated (at our request) to a table without fuss or delay and did gain a couple more inches, but only inches. They had another room to the right which was also in use and I quickly it checked before we left but it was pretty much the same. read more

I love this place! My boyfriend and I come specifically for their pizza. It's thin crust and delicious. The boyfriend is a particularly picky pizza eater and this is one of the only places out of the ones we've tried in the area (more than I can count) that he likes. When I'm not in the mood for pizza I usually get the Fettucini Bolognese. It's incredibly unhealthy, but definitely hits the spot. The bread that they give you when you dine in or have entrees in your carry out order, is incredible. It's warm with a spice blend slathered on it and there is an olive oil dip they put on your table if you eat there. I'm looking forward to our pizza tonight! My worst experience dining! I visited this location recently treating my 90 year old mother for late Mothers day lunch and it turned to be my worst experience ever in a restaurant. Our server Alexa was extremely negligent and unprofessional. Never check with us the entire time and got a horrible attitude when I called her with somebody else even slamed the check presenter twice on the table and never said a word, if I did not complained just for respect to my elder mom and the lack of visible manager in charge. ONE STAR BECAUSE I CAN'T GIVE NEGATIVE STARS. The food is never a problem here, however last night our server was new and was obviously being hazed by fellow employees and upon trying to address the problem with the manager, he was abrasive and blamed the server in front of customers (I work in the restaurant business, this is highly inappropriate and I would never conduct myself in this manner). The young man was doing the best he could and the people around him, his own coworkers, put his tip in jeopardy. Being a restaurant person, we tipped without punishing him for his coworkers' behavior. Ive been here many times and they have excellent food. The chicken Chesapeake, veal veal saltimbocca, and sausage pizza are a few of my favorites. One big complaint I do have is about the pasta with red sauce they serve on the side....it tastes like they use some generic pasta thats probably been sitting around for a while and then throw it with some sauce and send it out....Could benefit greatly from having fresh pasta. Sorry but to be a great italian restaurant you have to make your own pasta!! At least buy some decent not boxed stuff. Overall though itsa pretty good spot, even for a small chain! read more

My husband is a native New Yorker, so he is very particular about his pizza. Although not perfectly authentic, Mamma Lucia is one of the best pizza places we have found in Montgomery County. We often go and sit down for a meal, but they make it just as easy to call in an order and carry-out. In addition to pizza, we have tried a number of their other Italian specialties - sausage and peppers, pollo brunello and pollo di Mamma are among our favorite entrees. One of my favorite dishes at Mamma Lucia is their Greek salad with grilled chicken. Service in the restaurant is good and there is a private room at this Mamma's location where you could host a good-sized group. read more

For the Olney location only, we love the Bethesda one. The waitress was great but hampered by the slow and obviously inattentive kitchen staff. When an elderly person asks for well done, really really well done steak..make it that way. Not warm and pink. It drives me nuts too, but that's how Gramma likes her steak. I hate writing negative reviews when the service was nice, but the food unfortunately left me no choice. I picked up lunch last Tuesday, chicken picatta, and it was a total mess. The meat itself lacked flavor and because it was also undercooked, I had to throw 90% of the dish away for precautionary health concerns. Worst yet, it came out to $13 plus and I had nothing to show for it and was starving. We were disappointed in the quality of the chicken entrees. The service was great--fast and attentive--but our main courses were just fair. The chicken in my chicken marsala and my son's chicken florentine was thick and flavorless. To compensate, each dish had too much salt and sauces. There was no subtlety to these dishes. Frankly, I could have been at a diner and received the same food. The good news was that the pasta that accompanied the dishes was excellent. My wife's calamari was good, not great. Pretty standard Italian. Everything was well made and tasted great. The ambiance didn't seem like anything special and the food itself seemed like it was a bit on the pricey side. I had checked the menu online before coming here, when I got there the menu was different, items were more expensive. This was also a lunch hour so I found that surprising. On the plus side, you get a side salad if you order a meal. We also waited quite awhile for our food once we finished our soup and salad. I go to Mamma Lucia s quite frequently. It is a family restaurant, the staff all treat you like family and the manager's Jimmy and Patty make you feel very at home. I've never seen a restaurant treat their customers and their staff with respect and dignity. The food is delicious, pleasant presentation and hot. Patty makes up the specials, there is nothing like her special potato salad with soft shelled crabs and Cole slaw. There are so many delicious entrees, appetizers and desserts. I recommend that if you want delicious food, go to Mamma Lucia s in Olney, you won't regret it. read more

Pretty good! I would definitely suggest coming for lunch instead of dinner because the dinner prices seem particularly expensive. Lunch was really good, and cheap. The garlic bread/olive oil they start you off with is pretty tasty, and there's some plain rolls they serve with your pasta (really good, and good for soaking up pasta sauce). My husband and I decided to venture out to Olney for our date night tonight. We came across Mama Lucia's in this shopping center and were lured by the outside patio seating (as the weather was excellent today). The saving grace for this restaurant is the bread they give you for starters. I should have just stopped there. I ordered a caesar salad with my entree, and it was basically lettuce with watered down dressing and some parmesan cheese and three croutons. I ate just a few bites. The waitress recommended the Pollo Saltimboca to me, so I went ahead with that. Meh, it was alright. Maybe other people may like it, but I was not a fan. I should have stuck with something classic for my first visit. It may have been a little better if the dish was not $18, but at least I have leftovers for tomorrow. My husband got the eggplant parmesan, which I did not try, but it looked quite delicious. Looking around, I saw some dishes that looked promising and we may give it another shot on Monday (pasta night) or Tuesday (pizza night), but I will probably just try another restaurant in the area. The Olney area is quite cute and reminds me of my neighborhood back home in TX, so that is a plus - still not enough for me to give this place 3 stars though. read more
