I had been to Rockville, shady groove but Olney food is much better tasting. I just don't know what it is- must be the chef that works at Olney. I ordered the Italian Wedding Soup and a Jimmy pizza - I was blown away with the taste - it was so so good. I had not been here over a year since the pandemic. I am so glad that this place still here - thank god that this place is still here and the food still so yummy. I will definitely come back again. Plus, the Mammas team is awesome. Why is Olney food just as expensive as in DC or Bethesda, but of much, much lower quality? Mama Lucia used to be decent, but their eggplant parm recipe changed for the worst and the restaurant caused me embarrassment. I brought my boyfriend and his mother once (who are from better fed Crofton) for lunch. BIG MISTAKE. The lunch prices are far from a good deal, and the chef must've just thought that the quality didn't matter. My boyfriend got a dried out chicken sandwich and I got a disgusting salad. The quality is just sad - especially considering it's the same cost as Cheesecake Factory and other quality dining areas. I am giving it 2 stars instead of one, because the decor has effort put it, it's easy to talk here, and the service is good. But it's a terrible rip-off. read more

Had a very mixed lunch at Mamma Lucia this week so more like 2-1/2 stars. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan and husband ordered a Tilapia in Red Sauce lunch special. My chicken was served on a plate that was really too small for the amount of food, making it hard to handle without sauce spilling all over the table. But even sadder, the chicken was too thick and hard to cut and was warm, not piping hot, so not a very successful dish. The Tilapia, on the other hand, had steam coming from it and husband said it was very good. Maybe I'm spoiled by the Chicken Parmesan at Il Porto but I found my food pretty disappointing. A friend who lives in Olney confirmed that the food at Mamma Lucia can be hit or miss, sometimes very good, other times not so much. Guess we hit them on a "not so much" day. read more

This is an update to my previous review of Mamma Lucia which received 2 Stars. I am adding a 3rd Star to my review. The manager at Mamma Lucia was nice enough to reach out to me and asked for another chance at proving that the kitchen could produce quality food that I would be happy with. A couple of Fridays ago, I called the manager directly and asked him to prepare any dish he pleased, as long as it was in a red sauce and had protein. The chef prepared a Salsicce alla Napoletana, which is sliced Italian Sausage in a light marinara with grated cheese. The dish was very tasty and one of the better meals I have tasted at Mamma Lucia. To the manager- I appreciate the kind gesture. It is a perfect example of a restaurant caring about the clientele and hoping they are satisfied with their dining experience. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch yesterday afternoon. Was served two cold, old slices of pepperoni while another patron got a steaming hot, fresh slice of plain cheese sitting next to me at the bar. I had a completely clueless young waiter who never asked how the food was although he noticed that I stopped eating the slices after a few bites and pushed the plate away. It's a nice place in a busy shopping center and should be serving better and fresher food to ALL of its customers ALL of the time. read more

Mamma Lucia's is an Italian restaurant chain with locations in the Washington Metro area featuring 'down home Italian cooking.' The menu ranges from pasta to pizza and they have gluten free pasta for an additional charge. When I'm with a group, I usually go for their pizzas, ordering a simple Margherita or an elaborate Mamma's special which is a combination of pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, ham, mushrooms, green peppers, or olives. And if the group is indecisive, we'll tend to order a half of this and half of that. But if it's not gonna be pizza, my go-to pasta dish is Salsicce alla Napoletana, or penne pasta with sliced Italian sausage in a light marinara sauce with parmigiano cheese. My only gripe with this dish is that it comes with a lot of sauce. I suppose you can use it for scarpetta with the bread that's on the table. The portion sizes are huge so go easy on the bread and the garlic-parmesan-olive oil. The food is consistent and the service is always attentive. ML also has outdoor seating and a large private area for groups. 3.5 stars! read more

I have been to Mamma Lucia more times than I can count. My trip last Monday may however, have been my last. My favorite dish for a long time was the Ravioli Rose. Simple and delicious, but the last time I ate it, I ended up not feeling so well. Last Monday I decided to switch it up a bit and tried the Spaghetti Al Funghi. NEVER AGAIN! I thought it tasted a bit funny, but didn't notice the smell until I heated up my leftovers at home. A cloud of rancid tomato stench filled the kitchen. The smell actually woke my fiance up from a deep sleep!!! I would like to forget the 24 hours that followed, but it will be difficult. My sister, fiance, and mother also felt ill after the dinner. What are you putting in the sauce, Mamma?? I offer 2 stars for the history my family and I have had with this restaurant, especially the fabulous service we received at the lunch following my grandmother's funeral. I wish it didn't have to be this way, but I have such a bad taste in my mouth that it will be difficult to return. read more

Thank you Pizza God, for giving me a good carry out place. I dock a star for crowds, parking, and price. It is a bit pricy. But overall, this place wins. My wife and I ate there to scout it out as a day-before-Thanksgiving pizza acquisition location. We had a great visit and were well taken care of. But the carry out was really good. We went in, my brother and I, ordered, got a time estimate, and went to run some errands at Shoppers and Olney Beer/Wine. They messed our order up. We wanted a large with one type of topping and a medium with another. So...instead of saying 'woops!' the chef had done an extra medium pizza for us at no extra charge. Muy bueno, I gotta say. Mamma Lucia's is one of a handful of places in Montgomery County that has New York style pizza. The pizza here is similar to Pete's Apizza in Silver Spring and Flippin Pizza in North Bethesda. I've had pizza in New York City twice in the past couple of months, and both times it tasted similar to Mamma Lucia's. The eggplant parmesan at Mamma Lucia's is also really good. If you order takeout you'll need to leave 25+ minutes between placing that phone call and picking up your order. It's worth it though. Delivery will take an hour and multiple times my delivery person forgot to include my order of Jimmy's sauce (a wonderful concoction of oil and parmesan that comes with sliced Italian bread). I still love this place despite those snafus. I just pick up the food myself now. read more

The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the dish with shrimp & clams. I received four shrimp and about six very tiny clams. The shrimp were good, but I couldn't taste the clams. The sauce was okay. The seating was cramped. I could hear the entire conversation of the table next to me. The cost of the meal was overpriced compared to other finer establisments. Mama Lucia is a very solid Italian restaurant in Olney! I absolutely recommend their fried calamari, the batter is crispy and the squid is almost always tender. This is one of the few places that serve the squid tentacles in addition to the rings. The pizza dough is also very tasty and you can tell they make it from scratch. I usually get the meat pizza. My favorite pasta is the carbonara, which is very filling, but delicious at the same time. I sprinkle mine with red chili flakes and Parmesan cheese. One thing I would not recommend is the fried mozzarella. It it served as a battered flat rectangle and cut into large triangles. This particular style made the mozzarella less appealing to me than regular mozzarella sticks and the batter was not very crispy or tasty, though the tomato sauce they serve it with is amazing! Mama Lucia is such a solid restaurant, I wish I could order something there everyday! read more

Like all ML's, they have good pizza, not the best you've ever tasted but definitely satisfying, as well as a large variety of excellent pasta dishes and ample and fantastic free garlic bread. YUMMMO! While this is just a chain restaurant, the food is spectacular if you're looking for Italian! This is close to where I work and I eat here frequently for lunch. We've also had them deliver a few times for events at work...and it's always a favorite of my work people! My favorite dish is the cappellini adriatico...a delicious combination of fresh scallops, shrimp and crabmeat in a fresh cherry tomato sauce over angel hair pasta. I love it prepared in a rose sauce instead, which they gladly accomodate. Huge portions (I'll usually get two more meals out of what I order for lunch). Another great option is the veal saltimboca or pollo brunello....both of which I love. The ambiance isn't much to write home about and the wait staff is nice....but think chain restaurant. The food, however is fantastic and I'd recommend it if you ever come across a Mama Lucia's to try.... read more

Ok, I used to love this place years ago but the product changed. Everything I ordered was not as good as it once was. The good. Service was great, Ceasar salad, bread with oil awesome. The bad: ravioli rose not as good as it was. They changed to different cheeper not as tasty frozen ravioli and the sauce was not quite as good as it was. The chicken wings were not that good. Highlight was the fresh celery and ranch. The pizza is where things got the worst. The crust reminded me of cardboard both in taste and texture. The cheese was changed to a cheaper variety What happened to the Grande? Toppings were good i had same ol same ol pepperoni and sausage. I don't know if this store has had a resent change in management but it sure is due for one. One thing I know for sure is they have compromised quality for quantity. I'm pretty sad because at one time Mammas was considered the better if the restaurants in the Olney area. Now they join all the rest of the crappy places in this small town. We spent all weekend moving and the house is a mess, so my husband ordered food waaaay in advance online and then went to get some groceries. Well they are spoiling in the car a half hour after our order time and still no food and no one in there could care less. I have been going to Mama's for years and I love it. They have amazing pizza and some great pasta dishes as well (my ABSOLUTE favorite being ravioli rose). Their bread and oil are so good that I always get some added to my carry-out meals. They also have great coffee compared to most restaurants. The staff is friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is clean, lively, and family-friendly. Mama Lucia's is a great alternative to the chain Italian restaurants in the area (like the Olive Garden). read more

This place is awful. My daughter and niece (18 years old) went out to dinner last night and the waitress said "what do you want?" Treated them so badly. They both got $15 dinners and they were there to have a nice dinner together. They weren't even asked if they would like a drink. They got waters half way through their meals. Both wanted sodas but didn't feel comfortable asking the waitress with the attitude. They even tipped well (because that's what they were taught) Food wasn't great, place was dirty and service awful and not to mention rude! Stopped in for dinner after seeing "A.D. 16" at Olney Theatre (go see it!!). Food was fine, your typical Italian, half-priced bottle of wine was nice, bread was good. However, when the bill came, every single item was more than what was shown on the menu. When we pointed that out to the waitress, we were told that their prices had gone up but that they hadn't gotten new printed menus yet! To her credit, she reduced the bill accordingly, but if we hadn't checked .... We actually wouldn't have minded paying the higher prices if we had been told upfront, but to sneak it onto the bill after the fact we felt was just wrong. Also, even though the food was good there was way too much of it. Between our two dishes, they must have tossed out a pound of pasta. We felt bad for the waste but it was just too much. One way to cut costs would be to put less on the plate and offer seconds of (only) the pasta portion. Since the kitchen is open, we could see that some of the staff were either not wearing masks or were wearing them improperly. Also, one person had very long hair and it was not tied back in any manner. It's too far for us to drive for standard Italian fare (we happened to be in the area) plus the pricing deception and observations of the kitchen staff - we won't be back. read more

Expect an emphasis on quantity over quality. They first bring a large basket of garlic bread using an excellent italian bread; unfortunately it was stale. The side salad was uninspiring, with only two choices for salad dressing. The chicken parmesan was very large, with an ample portion of pasta, but i suspect they baked the chicken breast instead of making it in a pan (i.e., it was thick and chewy), and the chicken and pasta was covered with tomato sauce (not pasta sauce) as the menu frankly stated. Not much flavor. No complaints about the service. Think pizza place that has a full menu, rather than a restaurant with a collection of tasty dishes they wish to share with you. read more

We went last night (a Tuesday). My husband and I waited an hour for a pizza. When we went to the front and I complained about waiting for so long, I was told "It's because it's pizza night" So I am left to assume that all the people coming in for carryout were more important than the people who dine in. If you cant serve all of your customers in a timely fashion then you should have told me. This is the spot my girlfriend and I go to every week for date night. We love the pizza because it is so good! We have gotten to know a lot of the waitresses and hostess over the last year and feel like they are family. Our favorite waitress is MIA because she is so sweet and always has our food out quick and our drinks full. But last night was above all others for my girlfriend and I. While we were sitting waiting for our food the owner I guess came and said hi to I Us, asked if we wanted more bread asked if everything was ok. Then the food came out and he came over again before we left. As we left the people up front and all the wait staff thanked us for coming. It made us feel so good and we both said how great everything was. If you all could do that all the time your spot will be the best ever. I give you all 10 stars! read more

This is the first Mamma Lucia I have ever been to after seeing a couple other restaurants here and there. I decided to take the safe route and try the spaghetti and meatballs and was a bit disappointed. The sauce was a little watery, and the meatballs could have used a bit more seasoning (and moisture in my preference). The food was really disappointing...we had Fried Mozzarella, which tasted like it was a few days old...the marinara was super bitter, like tomatoes straight out of the can. Our entrees were nothing special...Chicken Picatta was bland, chicken was overcooked; our other entree had marinara on it...again, it was bitter...and there was really no concept of "al dente" coming through on the pasta. One could easily misapply this beloved seasoning, thus ruining what was once good food, but done correctly, the Old Bay doubles as a rocket ship to whichever planet in our solar system you think has the best food. This was a very disappointing experience. The food was very bland and flavorless. My girlfriend got the spaghetti and meatballs and the meat balls had no flavor and tasted soggy. The spaghetti was dry and bland. I order lasagna with a Cesar salad. The salad was really salty and the meat from the lasagna also tasted bland. Downgrading my review because each time I come here, it gets a bit worse. This time I ordered delivery (2 pasta dishes). The bread is so hard it's inedible (every time but I thought putting it in the oven might help, no it's old and stale no matter what). The meat in the lasagna was also so old I threw out that dish as well. Dry disgusting meat. Of the $50 I spent, only one dish was edible (ravioli rose) but the rose sauce is so salty and different now, it's no longer the staple of why i came here 15 years ago. My issue isn't with the food at Mama Lucia's, it's the service. I placed an online order for a pizza at 6:13pm, and was informed that I could expect my order to be ready for pickup at 6:33pm. The fact that I placed my order at 6:13pm on a Friday evening should not have been a factor, but apparently it was. When I arrived at the restaurant, the scene was absolute pandemonium. The queue of patrons waiting to pickup their orders clogged all the area adjacent to the bar and the lobby. I managed to make my way to the counter to see if my order was ready, and to pay for it. Once I paid, I was told my pizza wasn't out of the oven yet. After 20 minutes of waiting in a packed crowd of others waiting for their orders, I asked a young lady what the status of my pizza was. She responded, "Hey, it's Friday night, things are a little crazy." The guy who appeared to be 'keeping track of orders' was stacking order slips across the counter where he was boxing and cutting pizzas. I watched as several slips fell to the floor, where they lay until I picked them up and placed them back on the counter. After waiting for over 30 minutes, my pizza finally appeared. The fact that it was Friday night and the joint was jumping was obvious, but when my order was placed, that fact should've been factored into the time when my order could reasonably be expected to be ready....an hour later versus 20 minutes after I placed my order. I think I'll take my takeout orders for pizza elsewhere going forward. read more
