    Black Bean Noodle

Free parking lot is available. Their jjajangmyun is in the upper tier in Ktown. I've heard their jjampong is also good and their kkampoong saewoo (fried shrimp?) is confirmed tasty with juicy shrimp. Intimate dining area that takes you back. The servers are Korean and may not necessarily speak the best English, but they're courteous and do more than enough. I'll eventually rank all of these spots, but this one is definitely a staple!

jjambbong. We had already started digging in when I remembered to snap this picture, so the full serving size isn't shown.

A regular spot for us with our go to being one large order a piece of the jjambbong and jjajangmyun along with an order of the shrimp fried rice. The portions are always large, pretty easily feeding a family of 5 (though remember these are large orders of the noodles, which can be asked for but I'm not sure that they are written out on the menu). The inside of the restaurant feels like the mom & pop business that it is, sometimes reminding me of the simple places you might see in some kdramas. My father has been coming here for decades, and doesn't seem to have noticed the differences that others have following the ownership change. The jjajang is consistently delicious and comforting, with just the right amount of chew to the noodles and a good mix of substance to the sauce. The fried rice also is always great with a good amount of shrimp and that impossible to replicate at home taste of Chinese takeout fried rice. I will say the jjambbong is usually the star of the show, though just how excellent it is seems to vary to me. While it's always great, there have been times we've ordered it where it seems to be just that little bit better. Who knows, maybe it's just in my head, but I will say you consistently get a full bowl of delicious seafood and noodles that never disappoints. The service is also good and responsive, no complaints there. I will caution against going on a particularly hot LA day because you won't find frigid AC conditions which might make eating the hot broth of the jjambong a little less pleasant. Overall, a great place to get some comfort food with large portions, great taste, and cheap prices.

Shrimp Fried Rice with jajang sauce which I had to ask for...didn't see it in the menu

Food was good...I just felt a little uncomfortable bc the employees were constantly watching us eat...I think the staff there was watching us eat to see if there was anything they can do to make our dining experience better...for instance they brought us extra plates when they saw my husband giving me a bite from his noodle which I didn't take a picture of since it's just jajang myun and another time they brought spoon when they saw my husband take a bite of my fried rice...but it was so uncomfortable that I couldn't finish eating my food and had to box them and go. We weren't the only customers in the beginning but there was a time when all the customers left and it was just my boyfriend and I dining there and they kept watching us eat...we're both Korean by the way so I guess if you're not and you have this same experience, just know it's not you. It might be their approach to being attentive? Or maybe I had food on my face lol The shrimp with spicy tomato sauce was interesting and I didn't really taste the tomatoes. Apparently this dish was my husband's regular appetizer growing up so he ordered it since I never had it before. There's some spice to it and paired well with the shrimp fried rice which got greasy/ from all the oil on the rice and the jajang sauce. Definitely will return for other items on the menu. I highly recommend the half and half bowl of jajang myun and champong bowl if you can't decide on what to order.

    Sweet And Sour Pork

Small restaurant within the Koreatown plaza. Service was good, and enjoyed watching fresh dumplings being made like Din Tai Fung through the glass window. The sweet and sour pork dish is about $21 which is pretty hefty, but a super large portion! The amount of sauce to fried pork is a bit off, but really tasty. The jja jjang myun wasn't really my style. The sauce is too watery for my taste, but the noodles were good. Only $11 or so for a bowl though it is a smaller portion.

    Jjam-ppong
    Daniel J.

Management appears to have changed, with mostly pleasing results. Most importantly, the jjam-ppong is back to their top taste levels. Jjam-ppong - 8.5/10 - Mandarin Garden, a.k.a. Shin-Heung-Ru (SHR henceforth), was my first introduction to this great dish, and had been my lasting favorite for a good 7+ years (until the old Young-Bin-Ru came along). SHR's jjam-ppong is old-school, with somewhat unique veggie and seafood choices. I'd say their strengths are the chewy, fresh-feeling noodles and deep-tasting broth. This is the least changed, if at all, item on the menu - the new SHR simply upgraded the quality of it, as the old SHR had notable consistency issues with their jjam-ppong (ranging from 6~9 out of 10, score-wise). Fried Dumpling - 6/10 - Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. The old SHR fried dumpling was (usually) less burnt, and had more oil - the dumpling would become a greasy soggy mess after an hour or so. However, the filling inside was the bomb, and I would rate it as the best Fried Dumpling of Koreatown. The new SHR does oil control better, but the filling has become drier, with less juicy meat taste and more dry veggie taste. Fried Rice - 6.5/10 - The new SHR appears to have focused on infusing the wok taste to the Fried Rice, maybe a bit too much. It was still good (better than The Silver Lake House's version, on their worst days), but it tasted too burnt. Sweet & Sour Pork - 3/10 - Absolutely terrible for me, a dry, overcooked mess and unremarkable sauce. The new SHR would be well-served looking into their competitors' versions. As with my review of the old SHR, I rated them mainly based on the jjam-ppong. The new service staff tries hard, but is slightly less efficient, and some of them appear not used to providing customer service, using (probably unintentionally) condescending tones - I'm not your son coming in for your cooked lunch.

My third time visiting and it stills delivering delicious food. This time I went with their sweet and sour pork with sauce on the side. This allowed me to try each component individually. The pork is crispy and the sauce is mild in sourness, just right in sweetness as well. I am sure you will enjoy your meal here.

    Burnt Pan Fried Meat Dumplings

We notified the restaurant that the dumplings we ordered were burnt and we were not comfortable eating it. Their response was very dismissive and rude. The service was incredibly disappointing. All that was needed was a simple apology and for them to work with us for a solution. Instead we got defensiveness and impatience. I'm not sure why we were treated this way. Really all we expect is food that we can actually consume and basic courtesy.

They gave me the wrong order. English skills not great. Supposed to be seafood chachiang dry noodles. Smh

Pretty good. Looks like everyone is getting the black bean noodle thing. Chiangjian? Probably better to order in person and make sure they get the order right. Clientele older Korean. Chinese name but it's Korean owned. I like the noodles, I would try them again. Kinda a lot of onions, but I'm guessing that's the style.

It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

That was my first mistake -- they don't even serve mu shu pork. That one's on me for not checking the menu first. I ended up getting my kung pao chicken and settled for the Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls. The Mongolian beef I could definitely pass on. The kung pao chicken was good at first, but somehow lost its flavor as the meal went on. The egg rolls were just okay. Nice and crispy on the outside, but too mushy on the inside for my liking. I was also pretty surprised (and a lot sad) that they didn't have hot mustard. The tea was really good though! Service was fine. The server was attentive, just clearly busy keeping up with all the takeout orders coming through. Ambience is definitely on the lower side here, so don't come expecting a nicer Chinese restaurant. The menu is New American with Chinese influences served as a four-course prix fixe set, with each course having three choices, and optional additions are available. (There is an à la carte menu available in the bar area.) I went very carnivorous on my selections, choosing the beef tongue carpaccio, duck sausage, and beef short rib. There was not a bad dish among these: The tongue was tender, soft, and delicate. The duck sausage was fantastically good as well; served with an apple jam atop Swiss chard, it was a sort of Chinese-Alpine fusion cuisine of which I never envisioned but instantly wanted more. While delicious, the short rib was overshadowed by its cabbage accompaniment. My server told me it takes four days to make that dish, and I would have happily ordered a full dish of just that. The kaffir lime curd dessert was light and balanced, perfect after the heavier meat courses and like a small vacation to Thailand on a plate. The one dish I did not love was the Chongqing fried chicken course I added. The chicken itself ― a boneless leg quarter ― was a large portion and well-prepared, but the sauce covering it was a thick layer of chilis (which, thankfully, were not inedibly hot) and straight oil, lots of oil. Eating so much oil like that made for gastrointestinal discomfort the rest of the night. The soy pickles helped cut the greasiness a bit, but they weren't vinegary enough to get that level of oiliness off the palate. The duck fat rice, though quite good, also did not help much given its fattiness. Given the chance, I definitely would have requested the oil-sauce on the side. I did appreciate the crunchiness of the batter, which never went soggy despite being soaked in that oily puddle for a long time. I did not find any wines by the glass that bowled me over, so I stuck to cocktails, which were good. Service was warm, personable but not intrusive, and brisk, while the room has the comfortable feel of a mid-century modern den complete with well-worn cookbooks on the shelves lining the walls. I would happily return to try the bar menu with cocktails or when the prix fixe options change. At $68 for four courses, Firstborn's prix fixe is one of the best fine dining offers in L.A. right now, and it makes a trek up to Chinatown worthwhile.
