This is the BEST pizza in town, quality ingredients, locally owned, and health score 100 out of 100. Their challenge is that the major chains have big budget signage, are on every corner, and benefit from national tv spots. I encourage you to give this mom and pop a chance and if you like their pizza then help get the word out. Stopped in very casually, enjoyed speaking with Eli about his favorite subs. It was our first time trying it out and let me say my boyfriends Calzone was huge, enough for two surely. I have lived just blocks from here for almost a year and just discovered this place tonight! I left this place with a HUGE smile on my face because the owners were just so friendly! You can tell they care about their customers and their pizza. Luckily, the pizza lived up to the great reviews I read on Yelp. I ordered a variation of the Maria's special and it was really good. Lots of toppings, perfectly baked crust. Maybe slightly overpriced but for the amazing customer service I received (even after arriving 15 minutes after they closed...oops), I would definitely come here again. It's out of the way for my husband and I to eat here, but we don't mind driving to get this pizza again. I was on my way to my friends house with my daughter and she told me she was hungry. I had just passed this place and I decided to turn around and just get her pizza from here. We walked in and it's a nice small Mom and Pop's place. My daughter and the owner were talking and she decided to get a small pizza. He was a very nice man and we had a friendly small conversation. She couldn't wait to get the pizza because she was so hungry and it smelled so good especially knowing that everything was made from scratch. She got her pizza and we went on our way. She ate it and said it was so good. She gave me a slice and I had the same response. It wasn't greasy and it was made with just right with the slight crisp to it. My extra large, two toppings pizza was $20. But to my eye, it really was just a large, at the most, and too expressive. Wanted to try this close-by pizza place. I love to eat at and support locally owned businesses! Called Aug. 1, Saturday @1 to see if we could get a table for 12 in about 45 mins. Said we were celebrating my 7 year olds birthday and wanted to order several pizzas. The owner (I'm assuming) who had an accent answered. He said, "What do you want for birthday party?" I said, "No we all ready had the party (at Thin Air), but just wanted to come in to eat and share some cake (actually a trifle) that I made. He said,"Are you gonna bring plates and forks and spoons too?" I said puzzled, "Well I wasn't planning on it, but I can, I suppose." He said, "I don't think so." I asked what he meant and he said,"I don't think we can have you. We aren't a birthday party place." Shocked, I said, "So you don't want my business?" He said, "What kind of place you think this is?" I was floored! I couldn't believe this man was turning down our business and I told him so. He was very rude and he told me that was my problem! I told him I would be sure to warn others about this kind of treatment on Yelp and I said goodbye and hung up. Less than a minute later my phone rang. "Hello". Him with his thick accent, "Who is this? What is your name?" I said, " sorry, but you called me. Who is this?" He demanded, "Give me your name!" I said, "Why are you calling me? Being from one of the two cities that know what good pizza is. As I found out this is definitely not "great" pizza as other reviews stated, so so at best. This place could be so much more if the owner had the ambition to do so. It's strickly pizza and subs nothing else. I called to place an order and asked if they had appetizers. I was told no should of cancelled the order then. When I got there it was still in the oven so had to wait a few, no biggie. When it got out it looked good but then I got home and tasted it, the sauce was a bit bland, sauce, cheese and crust weren't bad but not "great". This place has gotten five stars from my family and me forever! My kids used to go to St. Matthew Catholic school across the street and it was the greatest treat on Fridays we would go to Maria's and get a sandwich. I had never had a sub in San Antonio until Marias. My kids were in seventh and eighth grade when we used to go there. They are now 36 and 37 years old and we still go there if one of my kids are coming over, they'll say you want to get a Maria's? We all agree they are the best subs we've ever had, and I grew up in St. Louis and we spent a year in Boston and everybody knows they have great submarine sandwiches there but nothing matches this. It's the best submarine sandwich you could ever get sometimes I crave it. They are the best people I love their subs so much it never occurred to me that they even made pizza but that's my next deal to get pizza from there! Forget about it.
