It's interesting how, at times, one can liken a family of restaurants to a family of people. Let's take, for example, the work of Chef Mike Price and Joey Campanaro. There's the boisterous and ever-buzzed about The Little Owl, which still maintains a religious following for brunch and Friends lovers alike. There's the newer, sleeker The Clam which opened earlier this year to positive, although muted, acclaim. And then, there's the oft-forgotten Market Table, a seasonal, market-driven restaurant that serves what's loosely described as American fare. But, of course, my curiosity got the better of me, and once I found a group of like-minded friends, found myself entering this West Village restaurant on an early Sunday evening. Market Table has an iconic West Village interior, complete with an airy, well-windowed dining area, exposed brick walls, and an open kitchen that allowed us to see many of the dishes in process of creation. We were seated by the entrance, and our group of six was immediately given menus, water, and bread for the table. The fact that there were only a handful of dishes to choose from (due to the seasonality of the menu) made ordering a relatively painless task, and our server was quick to address any questions we had about the dishes. While several of my friends started with appetizers, I decided to stick with one savory course for the evening: the Pan Roasted Chicken. While it's usually the most pedestrian entree listed on most menus, there's still a delight I get from the near-perfect execution of the plate. At Market Table, the small details were overseen with care; a crisp, well-seasoned skin envelops the juicy, still-moist white meat interior. It's a contrast that's often overlooked, but marks the success of this dish. The chicken is plated over a spring pea risotto, which was creamy and at just the right viscosity and chew, and finished off with an aromatic garlic jus. For dessert, my friend and I split the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, with a scoop of Sour Cream Gelato. Perhaps more than anything, we were intrigued by the ingredients. Sure, rhubarb is beginning to make its way into more and more desserts (and with good reason); the addition of sugar gives the normally sour vegetable an entirely new flavor profile. The pie has the sweetness and tartness characteristic of a summer dessert, and the sour cream gelato was (for better or worse) mild in flavor and a good pairing to the pie. I can understand why Market Table falls on the quieter end in the dining scene. Having reached its 7 year anniversary, the restaurant is no longer new and the menu is more traditional and prosaic in comparison to many others. Nonetheless, Market Table's value proposition is different and has proven its success over the years: simple, tasteful, and seasonally-driven dishes that are sure to please a range of palates. read more

This review is based strictly on brunch. Arrived at Market Table a few minutes before our reservation, and the table wasn't ready yet so we waited at the bar. No problem at all doing that. Although the restaurant wasn't able to seat us immediately (and we were in fact seated only about 10-15 minutes after our reserved time) it was due to the fact that several tables had paid but were lingering, so I can't fault anyone for that. The space is rather small, seating mostly parties of 2-4 due to size constraints. But, it's not cramped (other than a little bit by the bar where stools seem to encroach into the aisle). We were seated at a nice window seat and the waitress quickly came by to introduce herself and offer us water. Shortly thereafter when we were ready to order she was easily accessible and pleasant. I ordered a Turkey Club, friend ordered a Flannel Hash, and we shared Spinach Risotto. The turkey club was fine, but nothing different than you'd get at a diner. Again, it was fine but for the price I would expect more. The Flannel Hash, my friend said, was good but a small portion that left her still hungry. No toast or other bread was included with it. The Spinach Risotto was the best part of our meal, and it was a good size for sharing. We both got champagne flute cocktails - she an apricot drink and I a Prickly Pear. It was very good (but again a little on the pricey side). Overall, service was above average. But, also overall, the food was not exceptional. For the two of use (2 brunch entrees, one shared appetizer, 2 champagne flute cocktails, tip) the total was over $85. It wasn't even nearly worth that price. If this same meal had cost $50 I would have given it a solid 4 stars. But, the price for product ratio is so skewed that it was just not worth it. I'll check the website to see if their dinner menu looks more promising, but I would not recommend this spot for brunch. read more

How did this place drop to 4 stars? Went here for dinner recently and they just crushed it. I also don't think I've ever had a gigondas for $85 at a restaurant in NYC. It was a very good bottle of wine but to be honest it was the food that stood out. I had a lamb dish that was so perfectly done as well as just really interesting without being so unusual that it feels like you're at an avant guarde art gallery. Wife had a pasta starter as her main - I don't remember the details other than lamb sausage and a spiky cheese. I would have eaten however much of that dish they were willing to make. Off the charts stuff. I keep thinking about every course we had and honestly cannot find a shortcoming with the meal including dessert. Get involved. read more

I came here because Food & Wine gave it a notice as one of the best restaurants in NYC. I'm always game for a "best of" situation and my hopes were high that Market Table would be fabulous. I have to admit, it was much smaller than I had anticipated. And the fact that the cabbie didn't know where Carmine and Bedford intersected was a bit disconcerting. But after a short few blocks we made it to the unassuming neighborhood bistro. I probably haven't eaten at enough places to know if MT is "one of the best" in the city, but it was definitely worth the money. The food was delicious and inventive. My colleague had oysters and I started with a lovely fresh greens salad that had a to die for vinegarette. Next I had the Arctic char which was quite fabulous...laid on a bed of braised leeks, mushrooms and some kind of divine sauce. Oo la la. My side was the special-corn on the cob with spicy mayo. Again, inventive and unexpected. We didn't have dessert but we had a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir. I like that the wine selection was varied in both price and region. No-wait, anxiety-free, sophisticated brunch in the West Village can be had here. We walked past the more frenetic, buzz-bloated brunch spots on Carmine and spotted this pleasant alternative. Market Table is one of those places that has been around forever but no one really talks up very often. Right away, the service was great, with the host seeing our faces sink a bit at news of a wait. He offered us a smaller high table just behind reception and we happily took it. The server called us "honey" or "dear," instantly earning our trust. We were booze-free and there was absolutely no pressure to sell any to us. The food was really fresh and good: I had the steak tacos, the gf had waffles. Definitely on the pricier side of brunch, but well worth a few extra bucks to avoid the sorority convention next door. read more

Wow! This place is still amazing! As farm to table as it gets in nyc. We love the friendly vibe this place puts off. So welcoming and you want to be here. Our bartender was great and our server was also perfect tonight! A great menu with so many fresh dishes you will have trouble figuring out what to order. The clam strip salad was unbelievable as was the burrata. For our dinners the special black bass over all these amazing vegetables, a cod fish that was perfect and the chicken which also was amazing. The crispy zucchini , which we can't figure out how they made it, was crisp and meaty, not the slightest bit mushy. Desserts were also perfectly executed! Lovely interior - Market Table boasts these floor to ceiling windows that make the entire restaurant bright and airy, even on a cloudy November day. I wish the food stood out as much as the layout and decor did. I can't put my finger on any dish that was absolutely terrible, but I also can't pinpoint anything that made me quiver with excitement for my next visit (preface: I went for brunch, so maybe the dinner menu is otherwise astounding). Everything we ordered was clean, beautifully presented, and fresh, yet nothing truly sung, except for maybe the fries that came with the cheeseburgers and the butternut squash risotto. I was hankering for some greens, so I chose the squash and apple salad with grapes and pumpkin seeds. Totally my fault for going with the healthy dish (must have been my off day). The dish came laden with black pepper. Everything black pepper. My friend's buttermilk pancakes was very ... flat. The butter spread on top looked thicker than the actual pancake. Also, the $10 kale and $12 roasted Brussels sprouts came on the same plate together. A tiny plate, best suited for a pre-meal complimentary bread slice. I'm not saying $10 should have gotten me a bucket of kale, but when a bag of it goes for less than $4 at the local Trader Joe's, uh, you might as well pay $4 for Market Table's gold-stuffed half of an avocado. And the turkey club was $16. Say what? Rents must be soaring, because damn. Generally, a very "Ladies who Brunch" spot. I had an nice meal at Market Table this past Friday. Early birthday celebration with the girls. Woo! Very intimate restaurant. Very dark, too. I could barely see in front of me. Amongst the 5 of us, we tried a good selection of their small but seasonal menu. For apps, we had the sea scallops, brooklyn burrata, sashimi& cucumber and their special, spinach gnocchi. Entrees -- sangria hanger steak, wild striped bass, grilled artic char and the pancetta wrapped pork tender. We also ordered sides -- spiced fries, spicy mexican corn and the sweet pea risotto. We all loved the apps! Small portions but everything was wonderful. Everyone agreed that the best was the spinach gnocchi. These were so plump and tender, with a little smoky aftertaste. If I had a spoon, it wouldn't have stood a chance. Scallops were seared perfectly over some simple but tasty corn risotto. The sashimi was a tuna, nice and fatty with thin slices of cucumber adding that refreshing crunch. I didn't like the entrees nearly as much. Neither of the fish dishes were very memorable. Both were cooked fine, tasted very simple and clean but that's it. I enjoyed the pork tender though. Wrapped in pancetta, it was nice and crisp on the outside. The pork itself was perfectly cooked! I wish we ordered more sides! All we tried were excellent, except the sweet pea risotto. This was good but pretty plain, I thought the corn risotto with the scallops app was better. That spicy mexican corn was the real deal. So sweet. Seasonal market veggies FTW. For desserts, we shared the peach&fig pie and panna cotta. Panna cotta was standard but the pie was absolutely divine. What an incredible flavor combo, and it wasn't too sweet either. Great last bite of the night. We had a blip with service early on -- there were only two waitresses working that night -- but it got much better after we ordered. Overall, good. Came here for the first time and loved it. My friend and I split a special appetizer off the menu - arctic char tartar with homemade chips. Wow. For our main, I tried the pan roasted chicken. I was going back and forth between the chicken and the applejack braised pork shoulder but the waiter recommended the chicken and am gad I went with it! It was heavenly. Crisp on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. My friend tried the atlantic swordfish and loved it as well. The ambiance is fantastic. Nice decor and very clean. Wonderful place! It feels rustic, cozy, it is small with wooden tables. I went in with a friend for drinks and apps, but the food was so good and the environment so warm, it slowly turned into a meal. The service as others have mentioned is excellent, attentive, very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. I had the Braised Lamb and Crispy Polenta with pecorino and toasted breadcrumbs, it was incredible. The flavors of the tender lean lamb, with what I think was spinach and tomatoes, blended together in a perfect way. For $13 it was either a large appetizer or a small entrée, decent price, totally worth it. I also tried what I think was Leak and Potato soup with truffle oil. Really outstanding rich, thick soup. The hush puppies were just alright, decent maple butter. Not bad but much better at Virgil's in Times Square. The last item we had was an order of chease, I do forget the name but it was a soft spreadable cheese made from cow, goat and sheep's milk, served with pecans, some sort of sweat raison or dried cranberry, and toast, really incredible cheese! Very small portion, but worth it for $5. They also do 1/2 glasses of wine for $3 before 7:00, a nice way to try a few different kinds. I was recently making dinner plans with one of my friends who loves to frequent spots in the West Village. We had considered visiting Market Table several times in the past, but had instead opted for other similar destinations, such as Perilla and Centro Vinoteca. So, when I emailed her my typical list of possibilities, she immediately responded with an enthusiastic vote for Market Table. I walked into the dimly lit entrance area and was pleasantly surprised by their massive wine showcase. The brick walls were elegantly stocked with shelf upon shelf of various bottles. The open kitchen was interestingly visible from the few tables surrounding the host stand. An intimate dining room lay just beyond this space and included a small, but packed, bar. The furniture was made of dark, sturdy wood and the decor provided a casual and sultry feel. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allowed for prime people watching. The cuisine was another highlight of this relaxing spot. My friend and I decided to share the Crispy Calamari and Beet Salad appetizers. The fried squid ribbons were tender and larger than I was used to seeing. They were served over a lettuce and guacamole salad. A zesty chili crema added a bold kick, and a dash of cilantro brought some earthiness to the dish. Our salad starter was composed of multi-colored beet cubes tossed with a small amount of tangy horseradish cream, fresh goat cheese, and fried shallots. It was a fantastic blend of colors, textures, and flavor profiles. The entrees were also dazzling. My Grilled Arctic Char was recommended medium rare, but I asked for medium well, preferring a crisp exterior on my fish. Unfortunately, the skin topping arrived extremely burnt. The fish itself, though, was still decently moist and cooked through. The char was served over delicious creamed leeks that got better and better with each spoonful. This dish was true comfort food. The accompanying shiitake mushrooms were sadly tough and tasted like shoe leather. A balsamic drizzle across the dish added acidity to balance the cream. Crispy onion curly-q's topped the fish, adding a subtle layer of texture. This would be an amazing plate, if only the mushrooms could be removed. My friend's Seared Halibut was delicate and moist. It was glazed with a sweet hazelnut brown butter and served over a generous portion of butternut squash risotto. The delicious Arborio rice was packed with chunks of squash and shavings of other fall vegetables. This side was perfectly creamy, without being a gooey mess. I found it to be the better of the two fish entrees. Though some of the desserts sounded enticing, my friend had yet to sample the cupcake greatness that is Sweet Revenge, so I decided to drag (ok, who are we kidding, she rushed there willingly) my friend down the street for some post-dinner treats. We both thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Market Table and would be happy to return. This was a true neighborhood spot, providing fantastic local fare in a comfortable environment. What I like about Market Table is that they take simple ingredients and make them spectacular. You really get the essence of the food that you are eating and not just salt and sauce. One thing I still can't get off my mind is the fruity olive oil that came with our complimentary bread basket. It was fruity and spicy and just so delicious on its own. I knew right away that it was quality olive oil. A place that takes pride in the smallest details, that is my kind of place. Market Table is no Market Fable! ....That was bad, but I'm still somewhat proud of it. Top. Notch. It's been almost a week and I am still fondly fantasizing about my dinner here. Everything from the crispy jumbo soft-shell crab craftily stuffed with pesto to the angus strip loin over fontina fondue, cauliflower side-dish, bottle of Garnacha, and pineapple upside down cake rocked and shattered my world. My father was also extremely impressed with his creative scallop crudo and tremendous veal cutlets over fava bean puree. The portions were rather large, the service was impeccable, the ambience charming and yet unpretentious, and the location was unbeatable. Carmine Street is a haven for foodies and wine-o's alike. Another note about service - I came here with my father, who likes to make it his personal mission to suck the blood (Russian expression) of all waitstaff anywhere that have to deal with him. He is probably responsible for the resignment of most waitors in the tri-state area. He is that bad. But Market Table -- he loved, and for the first time in his life, tipped 20%. We had fantastic Sunday Brunch here. There's a really nice selection to choose from so everyone in your party will find something to make them happy. And, everything we tried was excellent. The real standout? The service was perfect. These people really care. Cannot say that about every experience we had in NYC. However, we had the best waiter in New York, Daniel. Daniel took care of the service, got us out of there a bit quicker (we had to head back home) and was great to chat with and easily was our favorite waiter by a mile. Must have walked by this place 20 times and never even knew it was here. But that's the beauty of NYC, you will never run out of new places to try. Market Table is a small restaurant located in soho that has somewhat of an small European cafe feel. Came here for lunch and had an order of the sautéed flounder with cauliflower and brussel sprouts. The entire meal was very good. Flounder was tasty and the Brussels sprouts (which I usually hate) were actually pretty good. Cauliflower was also quite good. Only somewhat complaint was that the temp of the food could have been a little hotter. The prices here are really good for a soho restaurant, and they also have a good wine selection priced in similar fashion. Very laid back atmosphere and with good service. As a seafood hunter, I have been considering visiting this place for long; finally got the chance to enjoy it together with my middle school classmates came to visit me. The three of us got bass, bass and char. Personally I liked the char better, especially it had citrus and salad accompanying. Strongly suggest the grilled corn with spicy sauce. It was not spicy at all, yet the corn was juicy. Didn't have a brunch reservation and they were still able to accommodate my friends and I. Ordered a macchiato and it was on par with most espresso places, nothing to write home about. The waiter recommended the special to me as the "best thing he's ever eaten." It was pancakes with apple butter and almonds. I should be working right now but I was a little too excited to write this review and if I started it last night after my cocktails at little branch I would likely have forgotten something. Decent bar seating area and they had good music in the background from fiona apple to stevie wonder. Appetizer: We shared a beef carpaccio. It was a cheeseburger without a bun, you have your cheese, beef, mayo hollandaise and tomato and lettuce. Ok I really liked how the meal was presented (see photos). The flavors came together and made sense. BUT I think parmasean cheese is too pungent and strong of a flavor with this combination & the french fries in the meal took away from it; I'm not a huge fan of fries. On side maybe more appropriate than in the meal. ( minus half a star) Entree: This gets me excited. I had the yellowfin tuna cooked medium rare over leeks and carmelized, love the flavors, I ate the entire meal and didn't leave a drop on my plate. I have been to many New American restaurants and Market Table is by far one of the best I've ever tried. For an appetizer, you must get the octopus! I love octopus and have ordered it at numerous restaurants but the octopus at Market Table is excellent! It is cooked and seasoned perfectly. For main dishes my friend got the chicken which was also cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy to her liking and the meat was tender and moist. I got the monkfish medallions which I thought was heavenly as well. For those who have never tried monkfish, they have the texture of crab or lobster. It was delicious. For drinks we got the watermelon punch and the gin fizz. While neither was unique, both were very good and refreshing. For dessert, the peach panna cotta was super rich and a great ending. I don't think you can go wrong with anything off of their menu. All of the tables around us had ordered different items and their plates were cleaned off. The waiters are super friendly and helpful. The restaurant is busy but not too loud or crowded. I really feel like this place is a hidden gem! read more

Great smaller restaurant in the West Village which is a perfect escape from the bedlam of Times Square. We started with the Spinach Gnocchi, which was my least favorite dish of the evening. Still good, just didn't compare to the rest of meal. It had fava beans and mushrooms along with a tomato sauce I didn't care for. Also had the the Old Bay Spiced Fries with cocktail sauce which were a unique take on a restaurant standard which I enjoyed. For dinner, I had the monkfish. This fish is not easy to find but one of my favs. Loved it! It was cooked perfectly and sat atop carrot purée and snow peas. The combo of flavors was incredible. For dessert, I had the apple pie which was not overly sweet. Delicious. Nice wine list with prices across the spectrum. Mostly Italian. Service is friendly and attentive. read more

The bartender was very helpful with wine selection. Everything was delicious, but when we inquired about the portions/how much to order, we were told they were much smaller than they actually were. We probably would have ordered a bit less having known that. But honestly, this is our only complaint for the night. Everything was delicious and came out at a good pace. Oh, Market Table, you are a destination restaurant that I want to keep to myself but feel I must share with others. The staff is top notch... both friendly and attentive. They really make the dining experience exceptional. The food... oh, the food... Every ingredient is so fresh and expertly made that you can taste the nuances of each individual flavor while appreciating the flavor profile as a whole. The signature dish is the chicken and is the best chicken dish ever. From the appetizers (salad and scallops) to entrees (we both had the amazing chicken) to dessert (seasonal but we had a special gluten free order which was AWESOME!), this is my favorite restaurant to have a fun evening out with the lady friends. read more

Really downhill over the past year or so. Met a buddy there for dinner on a Tuesday night and everything was "meh." Giving it three stars because I had better experiences in the past. The issues: - The restaurant was hot and humid. - Our server was very inattentive in general and also just didn't bring my friend's second drink. - Broccolini was awesome. - Buddy said the scallop was solid. - My steak was ... weird. Partially on me for not reading the menu more carefully, but it came doused in some kind of salty, uninteresting sauce that smothered the flavor of the steak. My sister and I went on Tues night, got a table in the market area.. I was hoping for the main dining room, but our waiter more than made up for the seating! Peter was very helpful with the wine list (the $40 Spanish white was nice, not too sweet, and very apple-y), and he went to the trouble of bringing out our apps as 'courses' instead of just putting them all on our table at once... we shared everything and he split the dishes without us asking -- always a nice touch. The food made us giddy! Sardines w/chickpeas were a standout, the arugula was super fresh and crisp, the braised lamb and polenta was melt-in-your-mouth good (loved the crispy edges of the polenta!), arctic char was cooked perfectly medium-rare and the leeks were creamy deliciousness. For dessert we had the black grape sorbet with a scoop of the mascarpone gelato. Great combination, especially with the dessert wine our waiter surprised us with. Only negative is that the sorbet had a few chunks of ice in it. The environment is relaxed and intimate, all dark woods, low lighting, mellow music, and lots of smiles all around. Loud restaurant with tight spaces between tables serving new American eats. Service is extremely knows fable and friendly. The food is similar to the little owl though I preferred little owl more. It's definitely a neighbourhood place. The SPINACH GNOCCHI ($18)truffled mushrooms, fava beans is amazing. Such pillowy soft gnocchi in a light sauce sprinkled when Parmesan. BRAISED LAMB NECK ($32) eggplant, arugula, curried yogurt, crispy onions was my least favourite. The lamb was dry especially the exterior as it was nearly crispy. The sauce was not complimentary and the eggplant was just blah. I would not order this ever. WHOLE RED SNAPPER ($33) WITH GARLIC & HERBS pistachio pesto, fries, charred lemon. Excellent fresh fish that was light and perfect. The fries were also so crispy and addictive with perfect seasoning. Service was great and most food items were. Skip the lamb. 33 read more

First of all, I would like to share that it was my birthday dinner with my family, my husband and my 4 year old. It was a terrible, quite much horrible experience. From the moment we walked in we were given attitude because my son was somehow acting like his age(he is a kid!) he was acting like a normal kid would be at outdoor or indoor dinning place. We had our food and during our course the "manager who is an old lady(don't know her name)" came to us and said "I want you to keep your child quite" then my husband said "he is alittle kid" then she replied and said "I will have to ask you to leave the restaurant" she kicked us out with our kid. I just believe that this is the worst experience ever and even if your food is good, your attitude and customer service is much more important than that. I don't want to give any stars for this restaurant or staff because they are top level RUDE!!!!! And I will continue to review them in every social media platform. read more

Oooo i love the menu, especially their market table lunch, the price and the portion is just simply perfect for even a quick yet yummy meal.
