I was strongly urged to try this restaurant by many friends. I had an early dinner reservation and the restaurant was nice and quiet as the crowd hadn't arrived yet. I ordered a bottle of rose wine. Diego, our waiter, informed me that the wine wasn't cold and that it would be chilled in 10 minutes and asked if I wanted to wait and I agreed to do so. When he came with the wine, it was barely cool and I had to ask for a wine bucket with ice. Ultimately, Diego should've recommended another rose under the circumstances. It wasn't as though he were busy yet. Ordered focaccia for the table, we were a party of two. A good thing my friend didn't want any because the portion, for the price, was ridiculous. When entrees arrived, you'd think the used plates and glasses would've been removed. We had to ask for them to be taken away. Entrees delivered, no "do you need anything, black pepper, salt, etc." NOTHING. We had to flag someone to get black pepper. A small pepper mill was brought over for us to grind ourselves. I had the black bass which was too salty and quite oily. I'm in the food business and feel the service was very poor. When you start with poor inattentive service, everything goes down from there. Great place to come for date night. Love the floor to ceiling windows that give you that real new york city street feel. I've been here a few times and the food is consistently fresh and really well prepared. On to the food: homemade ricotta cavatelli - Perhaps my favorite dish. The fresh ricotta and mushroom was so earthy and good. quinoa hushpuppies - this was a rare miss. they were heavy and starchy. veal schnitzel (not sure if that's what it said on the menu)- This was really nice, a little sour. very tasty. grilled arctic char - very fresh. So we stumbled upon this gem and decided to sit and eat to stay warm. They have one heater above each table and one heater under each table for your legs and feet which is perfect for NYC outdoor dining. The food was amazing and the wine was even better. They let us sample the wine before committing to it , we love that!! And we got a special treat when we told them it was out anniversary. I came here with friends and a guy I am dating - was a bit of a gamble as half of the group did not know each other. The atmosphere, great food and service really helped and put everyone at ease! While not particularly sexy - I do want to mention that I got a bit too much wine and got hiccups. It usually helps and releases the mussles if you drink some water with honey or sugar. I came up to the bar and asked for it - the bartender gave me two glasses of that at no charge and it went away within 10-15 minutes. Two recommendations from our brunch here today: Oysters and Brussels Sprouts The oysters were so fresh and the cocktail relish they provide pairs perfectly. And I just don't know how anybody can make a vegetable like brussel sprouts so tasty. We definitely can't wait to come back to try another round of oysters and the rest of their vegetable sides. This was among the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in a long time. While the food was delicious, our served was overwhelmed. We were sitting at our table for 45 minutes before our drinks were finally delivered (without any apology). Our first course came a few minutes later and was great... then there was another 30-40 minute wait for our main dishes. During this time our server never asked if we wanted another round of drinks. I would give it another chance (and hope this was just an off night) because the food was so good, but the service left a lot to be desired. read more

Want a great place to eat you have to try Market Table. Coerced by my coworker we were a group of five. Our server was Shay and she was hoot. All servers should take lessons from her. Prompt, diligent and constantly on top of making sure we were satisfied. As always, start with dessert first. Strawberry Rhubarb cobbler. Served hot with a little ice cream. Perfect way to begin the meal. Honeydew gazpacho has a nice kick to it the special was cavatelli pasta with pesto sauce - amazing Crunchy calamari was superb Hitting up the entrees definitely eat the Risotto with seafood, roasted codfish, and the special was eggplant parm. Who doesn't like eggplant parm. Note the portions are not huge. Good medium size so u don't overeat The veggies were killer sweet corn OFF the Cobb and roasted market carrots and according to our friends the quinoa hush puppies. Unfortunately they did not save any for me. Boo hoo Hey, for those that eat their desserts last, omg try the tiramisu and the creme Panama cotta. This place rocks. tl;dr: Space could use some improvement. Brunch is overpriced for what you get. Came for brunch and ordered the avocado toast ($13) and acorn squash($13). I was expecting some sweetness from the squash with the honeyed pecans but the squash was way too sweet, if the baby greens weren't present I would peg it for a dessert. It was like the pecans were toasted along side the squash and the honey just pooled at the bottom. The toast was good, simple clean taste and the bread was crisp without being too hard. It's avocado toast so it's pretty hard to mess up and the simplicity of the dish wasn't worth the price. Service was alright but the space was a bit jankity. The first table I sat at had a power strip tapped right next to the seat and it felt like a fire hazard... I didn't feel especially safe with my coat sitting on top of it. I moved to a different table, it was raining outside and leaking right next to my seat. It wasn't leaking so bad to the point that I wanted to move a second time so I just made do. Went to Market Table for a delayed Valentine's Day. We made reservations so there was no wait (but in all honesty even with no reservations it did not appear that anyone had to wait). The atmosphere here is the reason for the deduction of a star. The bar is in a terrible location and the people that are sitting at the bar were being hit by the tables that were located directly behind them. In my opinion what would alleviate this would be to only allow standing room at the bar after a certain time. The bar is just in a very odd location and adds very little to the overall vibe. The tables were a little cramped, but that's neither here nor there, it's NY, many reservations are cramped, and this restaurant is a small space. The food was delicious. We had calamari as an appetizer. The accompanying aioli was amazing. For dinner, she got the arctic char, I got the hanger steak (so typical of us). Both were delicious, the fish was cooked just right while the steak was a perfect medium rare. Flavor profiles were on points and the sauces with each were good choices. We also ordered the French fries with old bay seasoning. We dipped them in the aioli mentioned above and we were in heaven. The drinks were good, a little fancy for my taste, but I enjoy trying new things. We also sat next to a lovely older couple who, to my pleasure, let us try their food before placing an order. This place is amazing. I had a work event for a party of 20 planned at a different place two months in advance. They cancelled due to a maintenance issue and failed to inform me. Luckily, the manager at that restaurant was able to get us in here. The food was delicious. The staff was extremely accommodating. They even threw together a personalized menu similar to the one I had instructed the other venue to make. Can't stress enough what a life saver this place was, not to mention the incredible food. You know what? everything was going "A-OK". By the book. A crudo that deserve itself 4.5 stars and a lime crema sauce that deserves 4 at least. This Diver Scallop Crudo, on the appetizers part of the menu, is served along with spicy cucumber, peppercress and lime crema. The lime crema looks like mayo but it is actually made out of sour cream and that is noticeable, not oily but very smooth and I really like the intense lime taste. But only if they weren't served together. I loved both of them, the scallops were fresh and tasty but I personally think that you just can't kill a fantastic crudo with a sauce that overcome everything in taste. But let's consider that as a personal preference and ignore it. It can also be ignored, if we opt for the personal preference idea, that the spiciness was the other "super-predominant" note and it shouldn't go together with a crudo. Even so, I liked it I have to say, and overall it is an enjoyable dish. I also like that they chose peppercress to add freshness and its one of those ingredients fun to eat. In fact the textures are wonderful given by the moist scallops in contrast with the crunchy cucumber and red onions finely chopped and something else that I couldn't really identify since flavors were taken, you know that already. The octopus was really average. Warm Octopus salad with fingerlings, chorizo, frisée and olive purée. Frisee is that fancy endive. Curly and bitter and I thought it is a great choice for this dish because it goes very well with the rest of ingredients and gave the crunchy texture that otherwise would be missing. I recognize that the octopus texture was perfect. Tender, not melting in your mouth but still firm which I like because you can really enjoy the natural flavor of the octopus in each bite. But the dish was underseasoned. Really bland. Not even the chorizo and the olive puree could make it up to substitute the lack of season on the octopus and potatoes. Because everything was put together on the plate but it didn't really integrate with each other. And then the Roasted Wild Striped Bass was really overcook. The piece was outstanding in quality, but what a waste. I however really enjoyed the oyster mushrooms. Tender and flavorful. And overall the taste of the dish was good. The seating is beautiful and intimate. It does feel a bit crowded because of the proximity with other tables but it is very nice. Definitely romantic. Noisy however, and therefore part of the charm you quickly realize is gone. Also the area by the entrance across from the open kitchen, where we were seated, feels frantic as the cooks and servers are all around working hard for the servings. It does not feel calm which is all the opposite to what you imagine when you pass by this place. I wanted we were seated somewhere else but there wasn't other table available other than the bar. So we just stayed in our table and so I realize a bit later that we were also getting the smell from the kitchen stick to us. The service was correct. As bad as this sounds, it was really going like your average place. It dropped to 2 stars when I gave the first bite to the duck.The last of my dishes. Duck Confit and Poached Egg. Extremely salty to the point of being inedible. And I am from Spain. We know what salt is, in fact, we overuse it under American standards. Cracklings (fried pieces of pork fat and skin), the other inedible element of the dish because of the salt. Also the duck wasn't confit. I ended up eating the egg and partially the salad. And returned it. And it become 1 star when I told the hostess about the duck dish. In a place like this, I was expecting someone to stop by our table and have a little chat with an unsatisfied customer. It takes 2 minutes maybe, I was just wanting to let them know that it was really inedible for they to do something about it and improve it. They just took the dish out of the check. I am giving them 2 stars because I can't believe this is the food that it is served at Market Table but I was just unlucky with my dish that night. But I will not be back again to test it . Market Table... I think I love you! This is one for the Top 5 for sure. My man sure knows how to pick 'em and wins major major points for this one! Wonderfully yummy, fresh, local food. The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming, it doesn't get much better than this. Service is impeccable. Food is so good and flavorful, didn't want to put my fork down until every last bit was gone. Fish was so fresh if someone had told me we were along the ocean instead of the corner of Carmine and Bedford I probably would have believed them. My flounder was excellent and light and the couple bites of Boyfriend's Swordfish I could steal before he inhaled them were flawless as well. My mouth was in heaven. We also both loved the pork belly appetizer with the watermelon. Hello summer - had I known you were this good I would have been begging to come here sooner! Perfect evening for anyone on your list: hot date to impress, BFF, business partner, friend from college, your mother, your brother, your significant other's parents, your dog watcher, colleagues you actually like, favorite foodie friends, roommate, family from out of town, blind date... Do you aspire to have your own Bravo show by spending the hard-earned salary of your husband / ex-husband / boyfriend / one night stand / he-whom-is-not-even-a-remotely-relevant-love-interest? Then, Market Table may be right up your alley. Personally, I do not happen to fall into any of these categories. Therefore, Market Table's mass appeal seems to lose some effect on my pedigree.* This is what most non-white cultures think of as "boring white people food". Bland descriptors like "vanilla" or "steamed broccoli" or "Gwyneth Paltrow" come to mind. Having eaten at Market Table four times now (it's a popular business lunch option for my office), I have yet to be blown away. I realize I'm in the minority here, but that's not going to sway my opinion. All of their ingredients seem super fresh - there are workers literally cutting and cleaning produce right when you walk in - but the finished product isn't all too impressive given the cost. Still, their fruit and veggie selections remain popular due to these high-quality ingredients, be it their Roasted Cauliflower side, Parsnip & Apple Soup appetizer, or Vegetable Chili entree - all items I've seen dining companions enjoy despite my own shoulder-shrug response. And it's because of these reactions of others that I've recommended Market Table before, pretty unselfishly I will add. Market Table plays it safe, but to the right audience, that may be just right. Sometimes you've just got to admit when you're outnumbered by an opposing opinion. And again, none of the items here are bad by any means, I just happen to believe it's all a bit unexciting. The restaurant's charming, country-chic, corner property, with its wrap-around windows and classic kitchen decor, does deserve complimenting, however. And when Market Table's got the hook-up for the good stuff, credit's given where credit is due. On my most recent venture, I did have a particularly tasty Merguez Lamb Sausage Sandwich. It was a special (dripping with delicious meat-stained tzatziki sauce and yogurt), and one I would order again if I happen to get lucky with the right menu. However, it was an early lunch, when we were the first customers there. Once I ordered the sandwich, the item was promptly erased from the specials board. Which leaves me to wonder, did Market Table only have one sausage back there? Some food for thought. *Well, my pedigree results are still pending, so even I admittedly don't know my target demographic. read more

Market Table belongs to that little family of restaurants that people rave about, wait to be seated at, and are all located in Greenwich Village. The family includes Little Owl, Joseph Leonard, Fedora, Jeffrey's and Pearl Oyster Bar. I do fear that I suffer from "over-hyped Village restaurant fatigue" and Market Table, alas, is the first full-blown outbreak of this curious disease. I went for brunch today with a friend. I had the poached eggs, he had the falafel, we shared a side of fries and drank tap water. The bill came to $55. That is WAY overpriced. My eggs were tiny little ping pong balls resting on a midget muffin, covered in a drizzle of hollandaise sauce. A sad little mixed salad filled out the plate. My friend's falafel was essentially a large patty of fried falafel with a mixed salad next to it as well. We ordered the fries because we were hungry, and our dishes were underwhelming. I just feel like I've seen it all before... the spaced out menu with small-case lettering, the bottle of tap water served in a big bottle with a rubber top, the "urban market" feel, the fries with parsley, the small portions. The quality of the food was fine. Nothing stood out, really. The only thing I was glad about was the lack of a wait. This might be due to the rainy weather. I would definitely not want to line up for the food that is served here. read more

This place has been on my radar for years and I finally made it here for lunch with 3 friends. We were about 30 minutes late for our lunch reservation but they were very flexible and didn't fuss. The main dining area isn't big but it's not cramped and has good light. To my disappointment there was very little fish in the menu for lunch ( you gotta come for dinner for that) but everything we had here was good. We shared apps of spinach & beet risotto, crunchy calamari salad and ricotta cavatelli. The kale pesto in the cavatelli was really good. The kind of sauce you don't want to waste so you mop up every last drop with bread. Throw in ricotta and perfectly cooked cavatelli with that and you've got all the makings of an excellent dish. The spinach & beet risotto was executed superbly as well. I was hoping it wasn't going to be overwhelmingly beety and it wasn't. It was buttery but the risotto had a good texture as well. The balance of the spinach and beet was just right for me. For my entree, I went with the flounder sandwich and shared my friend's burger which was very juicy but a bit lacking in seasoning. I liked my flounder sandwich better. The fish was perfectly fried and the dark vinegar kinda gave it a classic fish n chips feel sans the chips of course. I didn't care for all the coleslaw on the flounder so I only ate less than half of it. I will never understand the point of coleslaw. There is better use for both mayonnaise and cabbage and it's not together. I hope one day people will look back at coleslaw and put it in their " WTF were we thinking" column. Right under Caesar salad. Seriously, f**k coleslaw. The entire meal was enhanced by some fantastic cocktails but we didn't have any room left for dessert. The portion sizes were quite large - especially the apps. We were the last table to leave when they were shutting down to clean up for dinner but in no point did we feel rushed. My friend even broke a glass while leaving. I almost tipped over an urn. Dream customers we weren't. The look of exasperation on our waitress' face said it all but she was polite throughout. I had always wondered about Market Table. Every time I was in the neighborhood, I peered into the floor to ceiling tiled windows and promised myself to give it a shot! Boyfriend and I decided there was no better day to try this place than on my birthday. Every single part of this meal was perfect: the decor, the staff, the food, the ambiance. We ordered the corn off the cob, the chicken and the pork tenderloin. There was something magical about this corn off the cob. It had an awesome kick and creaminess. I would order three plates of this as a meal if I had the guts to do it. The chicken skin was oh so perfectly seared: it was crispy and full of flavor. It was served over cheesy deliciousness. I could have done with a liiittle less cheese, but still the combination of the fontina and the chicken was decadent and yummy. The pork tenderloin was wrapped in bacon and well you can't really go wrong with pig wrapped in pig. The mushrooms served with the tenderloin seemed just a tad disjointed, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. For dessert we had the ice cream sandwich. The cookies were soft and the ice cream was FRESHLY MADE. God this was good. The other notable aspect of this meal was the service. This may have been the best service I've had in New York in a long time. The waitress was extremely knowledgeable, kind and helpful. The bus boy, too, was attentive, knew plenty about the menu and very friendly. I couldn't have asked for better service. I also just love how they bring out that little book with your check. It's fun to read what others have written and not to feel like you're being rushed out of the restaurant. Market Table was amazing. It may even have bested Little Owl! I think I've discovered a new favorite to add to my list. What a perfectly lovely restaurant! 5 stars for the space / ambiance, service, cost / value, and most importantly for the food. Market Table is positioned as a market / restaurant. But let's not kid ourselves... the market part seems to be more for show, not necessarily a spot to pick up some groceries. They do have an eclectic mix of stuff if you do feel like shopping pre- or post-dinner... ranging from boxes of ordinary pasta to jars of nutella to obscure crackers. My "glutton" friend and I, as usual, ordered a lot of food and shared all of it: 2 appetizers, 2 main entrees, 2 sides, and 1 dessert. Practically everything was delicious. Here are the stand-outs that I'd totally go back for: - Crispy organic chicken: probably one of the best chicken dishes I've ever had... how can white meat be so juicy?!? We were baffled. The butter hazelnut sauce was rich and just the right complement to the crispy generous portion of chicken. I rarely order chicken but I'm so glad we did! - Hush puppies: Wow! Woah! I may be hooked. These warm corn fritter sides were amazing... i'd order this for dessert (or for apps or sides)... damn, i think i'd order these just by themselves and enjoy it with a glass of wine. Be sure to spread some of the accompanying sweet butter (these are already bad for you so why not just go for it and go crazy with the butter!?). Other goodies (not as awesome as the above items but very solid): - Selfridges cocktail: refreshing, light, yummy - Apple fennel salad: nice crunch and combo of flavors - Bacon-wrapped scallops: thin piece of perfectly crispy bacon around fat pieces of juicy scallops... great app - Lamb shank: super tender and perfectly cooked... i love when meat just falls off the bones and doesn't even require me to use my knife; just wish it had a bit more flavor The only few things I would not recommend: roasted cauliflower side (never was a fan of this vegetable and doubt I'll ever be) and the chocolate-banana bread pudding. I was quite disappointed by this dessert (mainly b/c it kinda ruined the almost perfect meal). Thought of taking it down to 4 stars for this but that would've been a bit harsh given that everything was great in general. I adore bread pudding but this one was not the traditional kind and I found it to be odd in texture and not so pleasant to look at (slices of gray, grilled bananas on top did not do it for me). To add to the great meal, we had such pleasant service from our waitress. She was helpful, genuinely friendly, and actually seemed to care about our feedback at the end of the meal. She comped us for the wine b/c she felt bad that I didn't really like the bread pudding (despite the fact that we completely finished it!). Totally unnecessary but a much appreciated gesture. Oh... in about a week or so, they're going to start serving Sunday brunch. I'm SO there.
