Absolutely. Everything here is good. This place is like if a really really good quality diner got a bougie elevated upgrade but in the best possible way- not like it needed an upgrade- it's just like next level and fantastic on all levels. We visit every time we are in the city. When we find out people are visiting NYC we implore them to go to Marks and when we are not there we dream about them- not really- but I do longingly follow their stories on social media just to see the deliciousness and then immediately start planning our next trip... lol. But in all seriousness - the place is beautiful and elegant yet still casual and friendly. The food is so good, and if you've read any of my other reviews- I often comment on my dislike for most glassware that beverages are served in... but here- here- the glasses are perfect and so is the iced tea served in them. Nothing I've ever had here is bad. Marks on Madison can do no wrong. Did I mention... a giant cone of fries. read more

Woooow, what a disappointment! Been wanting to eat here for years after seeing the online videos of the food. Two words describe my meal, underwhelming and underseasoned. The lasagna was FLAVORLESS and a COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT. My wife's $56 lobster roll was a complete underseasoned flop also. The big clunky fries/potatoes weren't even seasoned. I don't even think they used a gram of salt in the entire meal. This was the biggest waste of $240 I've ever had and I would've had a better experience eating at a Halal food cart on the street. I should've knew what I was in for when I ordered a Coke and they gave me a warm 8 ounce glass bottle of soda. Yes, they gave me an unrefrigerated tiny bottle of soda with a glass of ice. On the way out, I spoke to either the owner or the manager tried politely telling him of my experience at which time he got mad and completely was dismissive saying good night to me. I'd eat at a homeless shelter before I ate there again. The 3.8 star yelp review I think is generous by at least a full star. So I don't sound like a complete Chad, I'll at least say the ambience was nice. read more

Mark's Off Madison is reminiscent of the quintessentially New York food institutions of upper Manhattan. This makes a lot of sense when you learn that the proprietor is none other than Mark Strausman, who's made a career of cooking classic European, Italian, and Jewish dishes at Freds at Barneys. He's brought his famous pizzas, bialys, carrot cake, black & white cookie, and a slew of brasserie dishes to this part of town, and from the looks of the perpetually busy crowd seen inside and outside over the last couple of weekends, the appetite is ripe for these classic New York bites. I ordered a variety of things, and some were hits and others were a bit lackluster, but the hits were good enough to warrant a four star review. I was disappointed to find that both onion bialy and everything bagel with scallion cream cheese were very, very plain tasting. The bread was undoubtedly fresh, but the overall effect of both was very underwhelming. I'm glad the bagel sandwich was tiny though to leave room for the onion focaccia though, because I couldn't get enough of it. The bread was fantastic, and the onion provided a lovely fragrant and sweet complement to the dough. The black and white cookie is superior to any of the packaged ones you'd find at any city bodega-- it was almost cake like in the center and had a really nice lemony fragrance. I'm a fan. I went last weekend and both indoor and dining areas were quite busy. Today indoor dining is officially banned in NYC again, but their robust heat lamp set up will allow you to dine there outdoors in relative comfort while our temperatures remain pretty mild for December. read more

Came here one evening for happy hour with a friend. 3/4 of the outdoor section was empty, as well as 1/2 of the inside. When we were greeted by the hostess and said party for 2 outside she said "mmmmmm I don't think so." Didn't offer a wait time or ask us if we had a reservation or a waitlist. I had a pleasant lunch at Mark's off Madison, though nothing experienced here would compel me to come back to this area (besides nostalgia). My primary reason for visiting was their Ultimate Lobster Roll. Is it possible for a food to be simultaneously delicious and underwhelming? Mark's has somehow pulled this off. Let's get the negatives out of the way: this was noticeably smaller than advertised. The video footage I had seen made it look (almost) worth the price, which was $50 at time of writing. Even with the included sides (chips, coleslaw and pickles), I felt a bit ripped off when my plate arrived. However, some of that disappointment was alleviated when I bit into the roll. Maybe soaking everything in butter is a bit of a cheap way to add flavor, but I'm not grading this thing for creativity. The buttery bun complemented the warm chunks of lobster beautifully, and for a moment M.O.M. transcended it's otherwise middling experience. The sides were fine but no better. Homemade chips are always a plus but they didn't taste freshly made. The slaw was also a tad mayo-heavy but retained enough crisp texture to be palatable. Pickles were the exception in that they were quite tasty, crunchy and flavorful in a way they always makes them the ideal sandwich side. The rest is also decent but nothing to write home about...just Yelp in this case. Beer selection was the definition of basic but the frosted glass was a nice touch. The service was attentive if a bit subdued, likely due to how quiet things were during my Friday afternoon lunch. Overall ambience/decor was clean but lacked character. If you're a tourist and find yourself near Madison Square Park, you could do a lot worse than this place. You should definitely support it before frequenting the plethora of chains that have sprung up across the city like a consumerist rash. If you're a local, don't bother. Everything Mark's can do is done better elsewhere. If the lobster roll were a bit cheaper I might reconsider that recommendation, but I suspect the price will only be higher by the time you're reading this review. THE VERDICT: Probably closer to 3.5 stars, but rounded down for the price. read more

Went to Mark's tonight for dinner. Service and ambience were good. I love the decor and the lighting. Branded plates are a nice touch. The bread they start you off with is homemade, flavorful and served with butter. We chose a great appetizer, the wedge salad, which was fresh and packed with flavor. It is at the entrees where it went down hill. I ordered a $55 pasta that advertised crab, shrimp and lobster. It came out overcooked. The shrimp tasted like rocks, the lobster and crab could not be identified and the fettuccine was glued together. The dish felt like a waste of money. My dinner companion got brisket ragu and pasta. Close to $35 for this dish and it was just Ok. So highs and lows at Marks. We may give it another try for safer menu items, like chicken parm, and lasagna, the dishes that get good reviews, and have huge portions to justify the $30-60 price. read more

I've been following Mark's on Instagram for a while and finally got the chance to visit for dinner with a friend. The restaurant is nice and has both inside/ outside seating. We were greeted by our server Sheikh who quickly brought us delicious bread. I definitely had to stop myself from eating too much bread lol. We both ordered the Lasange Della Nonna. The lasagna was good but to be honest, I expected it to be exceptional! Sheikh suggested wonderful wine and we had an amazing time. I will return to try more off the expansive menu! read more

What's the hype? Ordered delivery little gem salad for $22 take a look it's a joke...tuna melt very fishy tuna nothing special and black and whites spent way too much time in adding the lemon. As you can see the owner takes no responsibility not even an apology for such a sad salad with pieces of fat not bacon thrown in for a good "we could care less". I love karma it works. One of my favorite NYC restaurants. Went for dinner and had the tuna tartare appetizer which compares with any other one I've tried. I ordered the famous Marks lasagna and it was unlike any one I've ever had. Best in class but be prepared for a rich affair. I took half of it home and was delighted to be have a special lunch the next day Here's where it gets interesting, dessert time. I had one of the finest Italian meals in the city and we finished with a plate of the "best of" NY Jewish desserts. Mark's Off Madison is the latest outpost for the longtime NYC chef Mark Strausman. Most recently the chef and inspiration at the renowned and long running Fred's in Barneys. With Barneys now closed after a 99 year run, Chef Stausman has taken his culinary skills further down Madison Avenue to his own restaurant. Marks on Madison is an Italian restaurant at night and a mix of bagel and lox and diner fare for weekend brunch. It is a great treat and wonderful that a New York tradition is continuing even though Barneys is now but a memory. read more

Had seen Mark's Off Madison all over social media and was very eager to try this spot. The dishes were very artistic and seemed like they were very well put together. Came on a Friday night for dinner with a few others and we were impressed at how large of a restaurant this was. The design was very thoughtful and we were promptly seated as well. The complimentary bread was textured and not just plain or dry pieces many other restaurants give. The food was good but felt like it was missing a bit of flavor that I have gotten from some similar places around the city. Overall a good experience, but a bit expensive for the food. read more

My friends and I recently went for an al fresco dinner. We were the only people outdoors (it was in the 40s or 50s). The restaurant had tableside lamps and we had one right on top of us. It was great and the waiter moved it whenever we needed an adjustment. Our waiter was fun and friendly. We loved the food: excellent pasta and pizza with anchovies. What a hidden little gem! This restaurant has the quality Italian food with the ambiance of an upscale Parisian cafe. It's half-bakery and half-restaurant, but the bakery is closed at dinner. Then, I had the veal parm, my friend had the pizza, and his fiancé had a pasta dish. For my veal, pasta with marinara sauce came on the side. I asked our waitress if it were possible to substitute the marinara with vodka sauce, and she said maybe. Vodka sauce wasn't something the had on the menu, but wow did they do a great job! The portion was HUGE, and I had two full meal's worths out of this dish. For dessert, we opted for the apple bread pudding and black and white cookie. All was fabulous. Marks is an institution that managed to survive the Barney's bankruptcy and covid with grace and delicious food. This review is for their egg sandwich. NOTE: The bagel with egg and cheese is only available at the to go counter. Excellent. Perfect fluffy delicious cheddar cheesy goodness exploding out of a small toasted perfect everything bagel. Hey Yelpers.. so a few weeks back while trying get some steps in I case across this neighborhood gem. Of course I added it to my spreadsheet for future dining next time Im in the office. In viewing the menu I also had to see if it was on seated my preferred reservation app. Bingo..it was. Can you say money money mooooney.. As I made plans to catch up with a good friend I decided to try it out. We were NOT disappointed. When I arrived greeted warmly also noted there are a lot of take out orders. I was seated immediately. As it was early many seats available but as time progressed it filled rather quickly. It's a very nice intimate setting. As I waited for my friend to arrived I was literally salivating from the delicious aromas which assaulted my senses. Once my friend arrived we attached the menu, for 2 people we went in. We started with drinks I had a pomegranate martini and she had a pear cosmopolitan. Both were delicious. Of course we ordered a main dish as our appetizer. What I love? the items you would like to share they pre share it for you so no fuss of making a mess. We ordered the Octopus (shared) The Shrimp dish the sauce and the potatoes were magic on your tongue. My main was the shrimp and scallops with fettuccine scampi style. It was ok however when I added the sauce from the shrimp dish it was amazing. My friend ordered the Brisket special, I'm not a brisket fan but it was so tender and flavorful I could easily be a convert. As we were leaving Chef Mark himself came out and spoke to us and he made rounds to other tables. All in all it was a great dining experience I do recommend and certainly will return. DO NOT GO HERE. Stay FARRR away from this place. My fiancé and I came here with another couple for brunch back in April. The day we came was quite cold and we were seated outside. They dragged over a heater and turned it on but it kept going off and we started to get really cold. We kept asking for help to get another heater but were greeted with hostility and kept being told they'd figure something out. After 30 minuets of sitting in the cold our waiter spilled my water all over me and a pregnant friend and we were kinda fed up. Just as we were about to leave because no one would help they finally moved us to a table with heat. We got our food and were upset because some of it was cold and just not good. Our latkes were stale as if they simply reheated them. Service was terrible and the food was even WORSE. Days later we got an email from the owner Mark Strausman who offered his apology for our bad experience and invited us back he also refunded our meal. He said to email him when we wanted to come back. Today we emailed he because my fiancé and I wanted to do a celebratory 1 year anniversary brunch . He set up the reservation for 12pm and she said thank you and that we hoped for a better experience this time given the last time was beyond frustrating and a complete headache. Mark must have taken this as her being rude and was not her intention. Mark responded with one of the most disgusting and childish emails I've ever seen from a restaurant owner. He proceeded to cancel our reservation an hour and half before our reservation leaving us with no place to eat. SEE pictures. Speaking to a woman with such rudeness is disgusting and disrespectful. I picked up the phone and called to speak with him and he answered " what?? I'm not in the fuckin mood" You're an owner and you talk to your guests like that ? PATHETIC. As someone who has supported this place in tough times like covid on a weekly basis. I can assure you I will never give another dime to this place and will make sure to tell EVERYONE and their mother's about the disrespect we experienced here. Had a nice Sunday brunch there. Food was all delicious. Just very overpriced for what it is. The smoked fish platter was beyond reproach, but for the really small portions of everything for a whopping $28. It's shareable, but only if both people sharing aren't very hungry. The chanterelle omelette seemed to lack those. There were mushrooms galore, but I know chanterelles and these were not them. Shame on me for paying what I did and not complaining. Service was pleasant and competent. Getting a bit annoyed with these types of places. If you want really good smoked fish, I'd say go to Sadelle's or Russ & Daughters. The menu was very interesting; with everything from pasta to chicken livers, the options were clearly sourced from a mixture of both Italian and Jewish influences. In fact, we were so intrigued by the menu that we ordered a starter in addition to the extravagant bread basket, which included slices of semolina, whole wheat sourdough, and onion focaccia. The Homemade Soft Pretzel was one of the best we had ever had. The interior was warm and fluffy, while the exterior was flaky and golden brown. It was served with pickled red and yellow peppers, a tangy red onion confit, and a zesty mustard. We paired our first course with some of the restaurant's cocktails. I opted for the Fred's Skywalker, a refreshing mix of Tito's vodka, St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur, pineapple juice, cucumber, lemon, and agave. My boyfriend went with Mark's Manhattan, an expertly crafted version of the classic using Michter's rye, sweet vermouth, and orange bitters. For my main course, I selected the Fresh Pappardelle with Brisket Ragu. The sauce contained sooo many chunks of tender meat. It was absolutely delicious, but definitely rich and decadent. Decided to try because of a TikTok video. Ordered the lobster roll and the soft shell crab sandwich. Both came with homemade potato chips. Both are very expensive. Lobster roll is $50 and crab sandwich is $42. The lobster roll was not as much lobster as seen in the TikTok video. The roll is too thick and the lobster Was bland which required a lot of salt. The homemade potato chips were stale with no salt also. The softshell crab sandwich was a disappointment because everything else masked the taste of the softshell crab. Overall an expensive disappointment. Don't recommend it and never coming back. Sidenote: the hostess wasn't very welcoming and seemed like she didn't want to be there. read more

To start, my friend asked for a sweet tasting white wine recommendation from our server and was brought a glass of red. We would have had it switched out had our waiter not raced away and not come back to our table. Having worked in a restaurant for nearly a decade in almost every role, we looked past it, as mistakes and busy nights happen. When he did finally come back 25 minutes later, he said "you didn't get your appetizer?" with a look of surprise. When the entrees finally arrived, the top of my lasagna was dry and Luke warm, encircled by congealed tepid sauce. In contrast, another member of our party, who also ordered the lasagna, received a piece that was noticeably fresher and of an acceptable temperature, though still not nearly hot enough. Obviously the last slice of a batch that sat on the line while waiting for the other. The food and service was abysmal, but the biggest issue is the fact that even after being told that there was an issue, we were talked down to and then ignored by our waiter as we waited another 20 minutes to pay our check. No apology, no concern, no approach from management. I didn't want special treatment or anything free, usually tip VERY well. Tonight, not the case. read more
