Minutes after landing in Manhattan, I walked past Marseille en route to a different destination. The glow of the restaurant stopped me in my tracks. I went in for a closer look. The ambiance and menu were perfect. The prime beef tartare was heavenly. It is served on a large cutting board alongside a sample of carefully curated greens, pickled veggies, cheese, and sauces. Dipping the tartare in the mustard was divine. The experience left me wanting more, so I returned several days later and ordered the crispy cauliflower and steak frites. The cauliflower sits on top of tahini-yogurt and zhug, adorned with a pine nut agrodolce. This memorable dish will haunt me forever. It is excellent. The steak was expertly cooked medium-rare, as requested. The frites were on point. The next time I am in NYC, I will be back for more. Highly recommend! Merci! read more

My medium well steak came raw. Drinks took forever to come. Nobody filled out glass with water. Nobody took the bread from our table once we received our dinner. White male servers catered only to white customers while we were left with Dina who did her best. Only white customers get to seat close to the window while POCs get seated-- and hidden -- in the back close to the bathroom. My husband and I were given a table with no table cloth but everyone else around us had tables with tables cloths and all. When I brought it up, the management pretty told me I'm the problem for asking a table that had table cloths -- purely my opinion in their mind. (It wasn't coincidental that another non-white couple were sat right beside us at a small table right before we left while two Caucasian men were given a table of four by the window.) I had never felt treated like a second class citizen in a NYC restaurant. This restaurant needs to be aware how they're making POCs when they dine there. Years of coming into one of the Tour de France units around the city - Solid service, prices and fare. Welcome attitude and glad you're here. After a disappointing visit to overblown Hudson Yards we landed here an hour before our guests were scheduled to arrive. Luckily, it was after 3:30 the beginning of their Oyster Happy Hour. We settled in to watch them getting it together enjoying oysters, wine and the neighborhood. No one seemed to know the past Tour has split into Chef Driven with a diverse array of holdings including a "5 Napkin Burger" joint. Not quite French...but the one feels like it. Serving up steak tartar, oysters, salad of lettuce hearts, bouillabaisse, escargots and warm baguette we watched the evening unfold and the neighborhood regulars flock in to support their local haunt. While the spirit of Tour de France group and its passion seems to have faded in favor of the neighbors, the reasonable food at reasonable prices will keep us coming. read more

Absolutely love this place. I've been here for brunch, dinner and drinks and so far I've never been disappointed. This is a popular spot for pre theater dinner so I would recommend making reservations ahead of time. Unless, you want to hang out by the bar for a little bit which actually isn't a bad option. Went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago. We started with the French onion soup and goat cheese croquettte. Both were delicious! As a main course I had the Moules frites and it was so flavorful. Also tried the hanger steak and it certainly did not disappoint. I would go back and order the exact same thing again. Finished the meal with some apple tart and ice cream. Although the portions are small the food is delicious. Quality over quantity :) I highly recommend the following; Appetizer- Winter Tomato & Wheatberry Soup (Lots of flavor) Entree- Hanger Steak or Branzino (Both were excellent but as I mentioned small portions) Dessert- Banana Caramel Grateu or Pistachio Financier (so so so so good especially paired with their coffee) Drinks- My husband had two Manhattan cocktails which he really liked. Its hot in NYC and its not only the weather. We have visited A great French Mediterranean Brasserie in NYC at the end of June 2018 - Maseille. With their extensive wine cellar we went for a red wine CASTLE from Israel that turn out to be superb. We started with Humus dish that is actually made with fave Beans and served with Tapenade, grilled Octopus and ricotta tortellini , mouth watering. We shared the Bouillabaisse full of seafood perfectly seasoned. For Entrees we had the steak Frites perfectly cooked (Medium Rare) and the Pork Medallions served on the perfect salad with fennel and arugula. I wanted to like this place so bad but... where to begin? First off I had a reservation but when arrived was told to wait at the bar which I hate. Why make a reservation if I have to wait? But it gets worse. I asked if I can use the bathroom and was told it's out of service. All the bathrooms. That I have to go out in the cold next door to use there's. Annoyed I go out the restaurant next door has a line almost out the door for their bathroom. I'm told go next next door. I do. They too have a huge line like as if I'm at a concert venue! What the hell! This is supposed to be a "posh" restaurant. I go back irritated and tell the hostess I'm here. My table is still not ready. I go to the bar and wait and wait and wait. My friend then texts me where am I? She's at the table. The hostess forgot about me! I am literally fuming now. Then I sit at my table. Trying to salvage the lunch. The waiter comes over and we order the escargot. The waiter clearly not reading the table cracks a joke so do we know what we are ordering? Really? We get that and the Marseilles burger which has been getting pretty decent reviews. I will say I thought it would be more cheesy considering it's raclette cheese. But it wasn't. I liked that the bun was crispy. Was also annoyed that we barely got any ketchup? I mean I got a burger and fries why are you being stingy with the ketchup? very disappointed from Marseille. last Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 3 PM the restaurant wasn't busy at time, it took forever to bring me my lunch. I was sitting outside. The manager was there doing nothing but I couldn't get his attention and he didn't make the effort to come outside and ask if i needed anything. I had to ask for bread and olive oil. My only complaint is with the portions - but then what do you expect from French food. I asked the waiter what appetizer he would recommend and without hesitation he recommended the scallops. I assume I paid at least $12 for it (all appetizers about the same price). He came back with 2 on a plate. Seriously? C'mon there is no scallop worth $6 each no matter how amazing it might taste. I pried the little critter apart very carefully to see how many bites I could get out of it. At 4 bites per scallop you just cannot justify the expense. My mom & sister went here with me for brunch. The bread they gave us in the beginning wasn't good, but the mini muffins were. We were pleased with the bottomless mimosas; the blood orange was quite tasty! We ordered a starter that never came. (The waitress offered to bring it after our entree so we canceled it.) The Brioche French toast was good with fruit in every bite. Unfortunately, the Croque Madame was very bland. Also, the Avocado Toast (without egg for my vegan sister) was the most disappointing of all. It was the same bad bread slathered with completely unseasoned avocado & a side of 3 plain tomato slices. An egg would not have made it better. Thankfully, salt & pepper were at the table. To make matters worse, the service was very slow, although our waitress was kind. The first time I came, I ordered the avocado toast--which was a little bland. My boyfriend loved the shashuka though, and so we came again for brunch. This time I ordered a kale salad with a side of fries (all about balance, right?) and he ordered a caviar egg dish. Both dishes were definitely better than what i experienced here before. The kale looks plain but doesnt lack in taste. And I loved the caviar on the egg, giving it a bit of saltiness. The coffee was also decent and came with refills. Went for brunch on a Saturday and had a wonderful time. Service here was wonderful. Despite being super packed even early on in the day, the wait staff are attentive and make sure to refill water and your bottomless mimosas regularly. I'd say the best thing about this spot is the bottomless drinks for brunch. There's 4 different kinds of mimosas to choose from, and you can rotate; they just time limit you to 90 minutes. The food was pretty average but still nutritious and filling. We got the salade nicoise (the tuna was actually very good even if the salad underneath was plain) and the avocado toast. We also had the "eggplant caviar" which was like a disappointing baba ghanoush served with grilled naan. The best thing we ate was some creme brûlée, with the perfect creamy texture and crunchy sugar topping. Come for the atmosphere, the cute outdoor seating and the cheap drinks, and eat because you gotta have something with all those drinks! read more

I have been frequenting this so called "French restaurant for years." Over the course of time, it has gone from being a very good French restaurant to a mediocre, wanting to be French restaurant. French cusine is not spicy. Either they have a new Indian cook or Mexican cook who likes to pump up the volume with the spices. It ruins the classic French dishes. I paid $28 for a glass of what I thought was a very good French champagne. I love champagne. I know champagne. They removed the good labels and replaced them with a cheap champagne at $28 per glass! As much as I liked the restaurant and the convenient location, I will never return nor will I tell my friends about it as many would go pre-theatre. My advice: there are plenty of other good resturants in the area. STAY AWAY FROM MARSEILLE. High prices, I don't mind, if the food and wines are good, but this has become a rip off place when you don't even get bread and butter, unless you ask for it 3 times. Stay away. I will never return. Some thought: the "shrimp beignets" are popcorn shrimp. I guess it's not OK to call them that in France? We went round and round with the waitress on a description and she led us to believe they were actual beignets, with shrimp inside. Au contrails, they are fried popcorn shrimp. Maybe our expectations were too high based on the description we were given? They were good as far as popcorn shrimp goes, just not worth the money. The grilled octopus was overcooked and tough. I know it's hard to cook, but that's for me; I'm not a pro. A pro should know better. The steak tartare was good, but the cut of meat was tough and large; not what I was used to in France. The bouillabaisse was flavorful. Word of caution for words yet diners: our booth was next to the window and the heaters for the outside diners was like sitting on the sun. Seriously, I'm surprised we didn't have sunburn on our backs. One other tip: Marseille, not everyone who uses the urinal is Shaq. We have been to the bar many times and always had good service. We ate at the restaurant and were incredibly disappointed. The food was good, but the service was horrible. 15 mins before anyone came to our table. 10 mins for drinks and over 1/2 hour for breakfast food. In between our waiting we watched the waiter chat with his friends that passed by the rest. We also heard everyone close to us constantly ask for service. Very disappointing. I went here with some friends last weekend. We were waited on by CHRISTIAN A. and the entire experience was awful. This was probably the most disgusting attitude any of us had ever received from a server. He was condescending, rude, and mocked one of the ladies at the table when she requested the bill. We were in such shock we did not even know how to react. It was extremely uncomfortable and not classy at all. At the end of the night our waiter made an extremely snarky comment to our group, which I will not expand on. Once we had left CHRISTIAN A. felt he deserved a $200+ tip which HE CHARGED to one of our cards on a bill less than $50. This is GRAND THEFT. We the food was great and the only reason I'm not giving it a fifth star, is because I ordered something done a special way and did not get it because the chef made a big deal out of making the adjustment. So I went for lunch and the food was absolutely horrible. We got the seafood burger and the crab meat salad. Tried ordering the goat cheese tart but they were out of it. Looking back, I'm glad we didn't waste any more money on their food. Service was ok. They had plenty of seatings. So the food: I can eat and I eat a lot. I never leave food on my plate but I couldn't even finish half of the seafood burger because it was gross and my husband's salad was mediocre at best. You could literally get a better piece of steak from the corner diner or Applebee's and believe me that's an incredibly low bar to meet. If my understanding of Manhattan from my short trip to explore the city doesn't fail me, I believe Marseille is in the middle of the midtown area. It has a very French feeling and looks like it was built to appeal to the early 20th century patron but it still appeals to the customer in 2017. We made reservations for noon but were running late because I decided to go to SoHo in the morning and get my Dominique Ansel fix. But more on that in a different review. They have a lot of seating so that's not a problem. But it was fully packed when we arrived. Thankfully we had a reservation and they honored it even though we were almost 15 minute late (thank you crazy new york traffic). The crowd was mostly upper 30s and onward. We were probably the youngest people in the whole restaurant. So if you're looking for a younger crowd, I'd steer clear of going there unless I was just here on an early bird special day. The food here is good. I can't really say that it was amazing because I found a crab shell in my crab and egg brunch. The server apologized and the manager did too when he came. Maybe I'm used to service par excellence where if something like this happens they usually remove the plate from your table and ask to bring a different one or comp you for it. I am not one to get free meals because there's something wrong with it but I just couldn't bear eating after having my tooth and tongue practically destroyed. Thankfully it wasn't serious and I healed after the round of drinks they brought to us after on the house to remedy the situation. Also, the eggs were a little runny for my liking. The drinks here are good. So my take away from this experience is go for the drinks and stay for the atmo ? maybe get the french onion soup. Skip all the brunch specials because they just looked like docotred specialties of any brunch place. With a name like Marseille I would expect a lot more than what the menu offered. Decided to stop by after seeing a show. They have a late night oyster special that is not the best, but it is decent. Ordered 2 beers and a dozen oysters at the bar. The bartender seemed nice enough at first, but was doing some weird stuff behind the bar. He ultimately charged us a dollar extra for each beer; the menu said they were $8 each and we paid $18 for 2.
