I have never really been a fan of udon (I prefer thinner noodles) but I have to admit theirs is good. We got the nikutama with a side of the kitsune and an extra egg. Basically it was delicious. The broth was great and slightly sweet which I loved. The meat was delicious and the udon was perfectly made. The line was long because it just opened but it moved quickly so don't be afraid to hop in line. They had a kiosk at the side but it wasn't on when we went. We also took ours to go and even with a 45 minute drive, we still had a great meal so imagine how much better it would have been if we had eaten it there. We actually wanted to try their limited edition bolognese but they weren't baking it yet and then had a sign that the creamy broth won't be available at this location until May so will have to try it when it's available. Pro tip: make sure you get some of the tempura batter shavings they have for free. It adds extra crunch and texture to the whole dish. read more

I've been to other locations before so was excited to have marugame udon open up closer to me. Food was delicious. Wish their menu had the creamy udons from other locations and some of their menu items aren't available just yet. Considering it was only the second day of opening, the service was attentive and with a party of 6, we were still able to get seats by the time we got our food. There were some small things that can be (and will probably be) improved over time such as the tempura sauce and tempura flakes running out. However after pointing it out to staff, they were refilled eventually. Side note - if you are easily overwhelmed, this may not be the spot for you. The restaurant can be very loud and bustling. Chris (the GM?) walked around and introduced himself to diners, it made the experience memorable. Hope they do well, will definitely come back. read more

Been here 2x and the food was solid both times. Love their condiment station and bonus...they have pebble ice for the water station! There are seats indoor and outdoor with someone available to help clean the table if needed, great service. Price can creep up on you if you decide to do add-ons but for the main meal, reasonably priced. Parking is hit or miss because it's Victoria Gardens. I would NOT recommend this place if you plan to order to go as they DO NOT offer take out. This is ridiculous as I've been to other Marugame locations before and they do offer take out. Not sure what the difference is between the locations but this is an inconvenience for those who don't have time to dine in. You are given the option to order and pack the food up yourself which is such a waste of time. It also does not ensure food freshness as the udon is going to be soggy from the broth. Got the cheese katsu tomatama udon. As with other locations I've been to, they are really stingy with the broth. There was barely any soup in the bowl. The chicken katsu, though perfectly fried, was extremely over seasoned and very salty. The broth was not what I expected at all. All I could taste is ginger. It's great if you like ginger but it's not curry to me. The cheese was a nice addition to the udon but could not help save the taste. Other than that, the tempura is decent here. The udon noodles are made fresh in-house -- you can literally watch them being cut and cooked right in front of you, which is a fun touch. The broth is light but flavorful, and the noodles have that perfect chewy texture that's hard to find outside of Japan. I went with the Kake Udon and added a couple of tempura pieces from the self-serve station -- the kakiage and shrimp tempura were both crispy and freshly fried. I've been to Marugame at South Coast Plaza and this one is fine. It's been a while since I've been to a Marugame and after trying this one I decided, it's not for me. I ordered the curry Udon and some tempura pieces and a drink and it came out to like $50. I was not a fan of the curry udon and the tempura was mid. It was a bit chaotic in there as well and I guess because it just opened there was a bit of a line, and it moved but some parts were slow other fast. There's an indoor dining area and it's big enough to fit a lot of parties. I think I would mainly come back here for tempura to-go. It's not ramen and I think I'm not a Udon girl or Japanese curry girl, but the quality is still top tier here. I will say, when I visited, the kids cooking behind the counter were working hard and that's the part that felt chaotic because I could see and hear them throwing down noodles, but it's all good. Coming from Hawaii, we love the marugame udon, but the line is always out the door. I prepared myself for a similar experience, but was pleasantly surprised that there was no line at all! I guess it was also because it was a Friday at 4 pm, it was a very late lunch for us, maybe a very early dinner for some others. Marugame has such a great deal on the Kake udon, and even w adding stuff on, still so much cheaper than going to another location and ordering their udon w the tempura and toppings that comes with. The onsen egg always slaps and their shrimp tempura has to be in the running for my favorite shrimp tempuras ever. Even compared to other restaurants in Japan. It's got a bunch of coating on it, but not gross and mushy and "breddy". I love the little crunchy bits as well, and make sure to keep adding as you eat so you still have a little crunch w each bite. The staff was so wonderful as well, extremely attentive and quickly clearing out our empty dishes, and frequently checking in on us. Within the hour we were there, it quickly began to fill up and I noticed there was a line divider outside and could see how this location just like the one back home could get quite busy. read more

I surprised myself by saying I don't like thick noodles but I decided to give it a try and boy was I glad I tried it. Marugame's beef broth is delicious and the Udon noodles seemed to be fresh and homemade which really makes a huge difference in taste. My friend is vegetarian and tried the fish broth Udon which was also very delicious. Calamansi juice is also very tasty and refreshing. So I came here with my boyfriend with high expectations because I've heard a lot of good things about this place. First of all the workers weren't too friendly. The cashier was very quiet and un enthusiastic. For what we paid for we were expecting a sit down restaurant, but it seemed more of like a school cafeteria vibe. My boyfriend and I spent almost $60 for our food. The creamy broth was very underwhelming and barely had any flavor and I would even go as far to say that it was just gross. It was disgusting and we also got the beef curry and it was very sweet and kind of just soggy. I've been to many Japanese restaurants weather it's been in California, Hawaii or even in Japan and this is by far the worst udon I've ever had in my life. Dime in 4/6 -Came in during 6-7pm hour with a line out the door but it was still fast I believe I waited in line to the order area it was about 10-15 mins if that . I ordered the #3 a regular bowl and it came with more white onions than beef which was a buzz kill and they weigh it out too . I do like the fresh udon noodles but I felt like my bowl had more noodles than brother & beef .. went to the next area and grabbed some fresh tempura to try with my udon soup plus a poached egg and a refreshing drink . They do have a mini sauce bar with green onions , cilantro , lime , ginger and a sauce and utensils and self serve if you want ice water . Overall , it was good .. when it came to paying the girl at the front the cashier didn't know how to count tempura I had to count my shrimp , potatoes & gyoza for her 3x like seriously I do know how to count & she didn't apologize even sadly . The soup was good .. but in all honesty I have mixed feelings I like the one in chino much better . I know this place just opened last week so I know it comes with growing pains . I'd suggest the team slow down a bit when it comes to customer service so you are more detailed with each guest .. altogether for what I spent .. I gave this location a 3 compared to the other locations I have been too ( Oahu, Costa Mesa and UTC) those location are a 5 but this location is a 3. The reason I gave this a 3 because I dont like how the tempura flakes and the green onions are self serve and therefore compromised the taste of the udon. I normally get the Kitsune and the employees ask us if we want to add the tempura flakes and green onion which I like but this location they dont do it for you its all self serve. Its in the left top corner of the restaurant. The reason I dont like the self serve is because when we went to add them the self serve bar was dirty and messy and no one monitors it. Not to mention we saw a kid sneeze and cough into it and said NOPE so we didnt add anything. I understand the tempura is self serve too but at least there are employee monitoring and watching it. I dont know why this location opt to do it this way but when it comes to hygiene this a turn off. We will not come back to this location we will stick to the other locations that do the non self serve and the employees do it for us. read more

Our family decided to give this location a try. mary up with some friends and waited in line for our turn, we were next the gal took our order, made the order, waiting to get our food, this is the most ridiculous part. The food is just sitting behind the counter with no one handing the bowls to us. There are like 8 different workers behind the counter, stood in line waiting for our food for 11 minutes before someone gave us our bowls on our trays!!! SUPER UNORGANIZED STAFF and they didn't seem to care at all that the bowls of noodles were sitting there already made GETTING COLD!!! We finally all paid and was trying to find a table didn't matter if we had to separate, didn't know this location made you go to a specific seat, The gal who was directing people to which table was all over the place, if your position is to handle the seating, please do so and not go disappear then get mad at the people trying to look for a table to sit down to eat. I understand this location is new, but maybe whoever is training the staff needs to be more firm and strict because they are not welcoming, unorganized, how can you make people wait in line for their food being the counter ready for such a long time?! It's nice to have a udon place here. But here are a couple takes to improve. 1. Each bowl hardly have enough broth. 2. Soup is NOT HOT. 3. The udon and tempura are always solid just like the other locations that I've frequented however what stood out the most to me about this location was the customer service. All of the employees were very attentive and kind, something you don't really get at most restaurants now. A few different of the floor staff made sure to check on us throughout our meal, and always ran to help customers clear and carry away their plates as they finished their meals. The general manager even took the time to greet and check on us after our meal which I thought was a very genuine touch. My boyfriend and I got the Beef Tomatama and the Cheese Katsu Tomatama Curry! I actually never had these at the other locations and now it's my new favorite. The beef and tomato were so well balanced in the soup/curry. As always the hand made udon noodle were cooked to perfection. Since it's grand opening, the restaurant was very neat and clean. Had the standard modern look for the newer Marugames! Will definitely be back and will recommend this location in particular to my friends and family. Newly opened location. The line was long out the door, but took around 20 minutes. Inside was very clean and someone helped us find seats given how busy it was inside. I always love the tempura here because the batter's lighter compared to other places. The beef tomatama surprised me, I usually get the dashi broth but I loved the complexity of the tomato-based broth. read more
