My 1st experience here.. food is amazing I had the Branzino, Caesar salad and the pork belly. Never had a Caesar this way but I loved it! The appetizer portion pork belly was plenty for my man and I to split as was the salad and the entrees.. can't wait to return everything taste fresh and light.. the flavors of the dishes were bright healthy & fresh just as I like. The space is charming, with a cozy indoor area and a beautiful, heated patio that's perfect for dining al fresco. The food was outstanding--every dish was cooked to perfection. We had the truffle pasta, the Bolognese, and the Branzino, and each one was rich in flavor and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The owner, who is from Rome, was incredibly warm and welcoming. His passion for authentic Italian cuisine truly shines through in both the food and the atmosphere. They're currently in their soft opening phase as they finalize their beer and wine license, so now is the perfect time to support a fantastic small business. Wow, I was taken by surprise when my friend @ryanrobertsla invited me to Mater in Studio City last night. On Burbank Blvd, it's just a glass door that looks like a very tiny restaurant. But when you walk in, there's a charming, gorgeous patio space. Outdoor only which I love post Covid. And have I mentioned the food? Extremely affordable fare and the most exquisite branzino with a chimichurri sauce that was cooked perfectly! The presentations were a visual delight. Also, the hand made pasta was delectable and our salads were super interesting, eclectic and amazingly delish! We also had two bottles of wine $59 each and I don't drink alcohol except for special occasions, but I loved the light summer white. The service was five star, friendly and fast. I so highly recommend MATER. You must try this awesome, cozy eatery! read more

What a gem of a place I discovered. This unassuming place more than delivers. Sat in the back of the restaurant and had a delicious meal! Started with the salad verde which was dressed perfectly, split a simple, perfect pasta. I had the branzino that was grilled and served with a delicious chimichuri and grilled asparagus that I'll definitetly go back for. Great wine by the glass and had great service from our waiter, Claudio. The chef is Italian and from Rome, which shows up in the food, presentation and sensibility of the space. I really don't like leaving negative reviews and I sat on this one for a while, not being sure if I wanted to leave a review. My husband and I came to Mater in December and were excited to try a new spot with such raving reviews. The outdoor seating was really nice and staff were very kind. We ordered the crab cakes, pork belly, a pasta dish (bolognese), and a meat dish for my husband. The crabs cakes came frozen and the corn that came on the side was not my favorite. Our waiter apologized and quickly brought out another one but that was also cold. The pork belly and pasta were both just ok. A solid 3/5. The meat dish my husband ordered was very fatty and at one point we had to ask for a paper napkin so he can spit out a piece that was inedible. Again, I really don't like writing the negative reviews especially for smaller businesses, but we also work really hard for our money and if I'm going to pay over $200 for a meal, I want to actually enjoy it and not leave underwhelmed. I hope this was just a fluke and a one off but don't think we would be back. Also, a small note, I hope they change their cups to glassware. Drinking wine out of an acrylic cup was not pleasant. What an awesome hole-in-the-wall! I happened to come here with some friends (since it was nearby their place) and I was impressed by their decor and menu offerings. I ordered the crab cakes + salad to start, and they were excellent. The salad was particularly interesting because the cheese had a farm-like (earthy / cattle) quality to it. It was a random Tuesday, so only two other parties were there -- the owner Alessandro, came out to discuss the food and he told me and my friends about how he sources his ingredients, what wines to pair with our dishes, as well as some stories about his wild life. It was a super nice experience! For my entree, I ordered the Chicken Milanese and it was perfect. The thing about most higher-end American restaurants (in my opinion) is that the food is disgustingly sensational. The first 1-3 bites are overwhelmingly delicious, and then I'm sick of it... Alessandro knows how to cook a consistent meal that is wonderful until the end. Pair that with their wine selection, and you have a banger eating establishment. As a Mater of fact, everything exceeded my expectations. This gem is coZy, aesthetically pleasing, with a menu that is not too "busy" and has enough items to satisfy a snack or big appetite. Tucked away in North Hollywood, this new spot is a standout. The chef/owner is from Rome, and it shows in every bite. The Tagliolini Bianchi (truffle butter parmesan pasta) was absolutely divine, rich, buttery, and perfectly balanced. You could taste the care in the sauce and the quality of the pasta. The Verde Salad was memorable, the freshest arugula tossed with crispy pancetta, fresh pomegranate seeds, and a bright lemon vinaigrette. Who knew a salad could be that exciting? The Pork Belly was to die for. A burst of flavor in every bite. And the Chicken Milanese would make any Roman mater proud! Mater doesn't look like much from the outside but the food was DELICIOUS and noticeably hand crafted, I had the gnocchi which was probably some of the best I've ever had! Ambiance was the best, the Service fair, food terrible. This is a lazy restaurant. Deconstructed salad with so-called caesar dressing was tasteless, the salad should be cut in the kitchen. The so-called chicken milanesa was apparently not pounded and was also tasteless. A tagliatelle Bolognessa was just not tasty, the pasta was too dominant and the beef not much in evidence. Tonight while looking for something new to try for a cute little date night we stumbled upon Mater. At first upon arriving we were a little confused if we were in the correct place because there was no one in the front- and while it's not very self explanatory - the layout is a little confusing with most, if not all, of the seating being on the patio. Outside is beautiful and there are heaters which are so nice so it's even enjoyable in the evenings when it's a little cooler. We happened to be the only people here for the entirety of our time enjoying our dinner. This place must truly be a hidden gem because it deserved a much larger crowd. The service was very exceptional- while our server was awkward and slightly nervous at times, he was very knowledgeable and helpful in recommending us dishes we would enjoy and ensuring we fully enjoyed our experience. I understand that they are still awaiting their licensing to serve alcohol, however there are very few drink options which is one thing that makes the dinner come up a little short. Even a nice mocktail or something to help tie the experience together with food that feels like fine dining would be nice. The food blew me away, and honestly made all of those other things barely matter at the end of it all, and deserved all 5 stars. The Gnocchi Fritti is the most unique dish I've had, I felt like I was eating dinner and dessert at the same time. I'm still thinking about it. The burger was a very elevated version of a burger and was absolutely delicious. The other shining star for me was the Verde Salad, a recommendation from our server that I would not have chosen regularly that ended up blowing me away. The crab cakes were also delicious. The price for what all we got was extremely reasonable, I was honestly shocked. There's definite room for improvement in the overall setting of this restaurant but the food is unbelievable. I know this place will be full of people when there are drinks on the menu as well. read more

Incredible hidden gem. Food was an 11/10, service was warm, friendly, and very personable. The vibes were immaculate. Such a cute spot with the most delicious Italian food I've ever had. I highly recommend getting multiple dishes to share, because if you don't try everything you are missing out. Even the appetizers are perfect. The truffle butter pasta was INSANE. All of us foodies hope to find that hidden gem where the food is spectacular and it not popular and crowded. Yet. Mater is just that. We were ushered to thei lr wonderful back of restaurant patio. The servixe was totally on point. And not rushed. We had the 2 salads, the house caesar and the verde. Both were unique and quite satisfying. I had the wagyu burger with guancialr sunnyside up egg and carmelized onions. It was so savorybi gad to pace myself from just shoving the whole thing down at once. Spectacular. The girls each had branzino and his herb topping was neither overpowering nor overly salty as many restaurants do. My friend had the bolognese which must have been excellent because he didnt offer us even a gint of a bite. The menu is small but very well suited to showcase the chefs awesome talents. I want this restaurant to thrive so badly. Very cute ambiance, but all outdoor seating. Come prepared! Heaters and sunbrellas are provided. I would have loved to see a few strings of tasteful white bulbs illuminating the eatery during my dinner. Menu is concise and food was delicious. With that said, the tin plates were not my vibe. Perhaps family style with their menu items might have been a stronger choice. Also, I need bread or crackers with my charcuterie, please!? Service was excellent, but no liquor license...yet! My fingers are crossed this place excels in this neighborhood. I think the location would have been more optimal on Lankersheim and Magnolia or "NoHo Arts District" and I'm pissed so many vacant businesses line that street while Mater sits in a more residential area. Shame on the NoHo Arts District for charging too much for rent! I'm going to return for brunch/lunch but dinner was good. I'd definitely return. read more
