We told Eddie we we're new and haven't been before and he made us feel like we were the only people in the restaurant - he answered all of our questions and was so patient with us as well as very knowledgeable. Came here for dinner and it had good business. There is seating inside and outside. You order and the front, get a number, and they'll bring it to you when ready. Mom got the Ono blackened which came with brown rice and coleslaw salad. I got their recommended fish and chips which was breaded with Italian bread crumbs and came with coleslaw and fries. We also decided to order their taro chips which we've never seen offered at a restaurant before. The Ono was really good and kinda had a swordfish texture where it is a bit tougher and dryer. They only offer Ono or Mahi Mahi. The fish and chips are made from mahi mahi and just as advertised, yummy. Fries were really great as well. Coleslaw was alright but didn't end up eating much of it. I will suggest to pass on the taro chips as they were a bit on the greasy end and couldn't taste much of the flavor. Lacked a bit of crispiness as well. Would recommend eating here for the fresh fish cooked in delicious ways! Will definitely come back again before leaving for home. read more

Not sure what happened but my Taco Mountain with the Ono had this off flavor that tasted like they slipped with the cleaning supplies near the food prep area. I mean, do you see this picture? I can't remember the last time I ate out and felt proud of myself. As soon as I touched down in Arizona, Uber drivers, concierge, locals, etc told me Coconut's was the place to go for the most incredible fish tacos. So I knew I had to make my way over to this location, since it was near my hotel. While the rave was all around the tacos, I opted for the Mahi Mahi "Off the Grill" with cajun and lemon butter seasoning served over brown rice and a side of seasoned vegetables. Boy oh boy! This was absolutely delicious and all I paid was $11 dollars and some change. I wish there were more restaurants with delicious healthy options that didn't cost an arm and a leg. It was so delicious, the fish was so tender and seasoned to absolute PERFECTION, as well as the vegetables. To make a great experience even better, the waitstaff was so kind! They brought me my food, struck up conversation, explained how Coconut's got started, and took my plate following my meal. I don't mind giving my money to establishments with good food, but establishments with good food AND great waitstaff ... it doesn't get any better than that. Coconut's Fish Cafe is about the closest I can typically get to Hawaii here in the Phoenix area. I've been lucky enough to drop in here on several occasions with family and friends and it's always a great meal. You're usually greeted with an 'Aloha' and a smile at the counter. I typically order the Grilled Mahi Mahi "Local Style" over rice and it is top notch. You have an assortment of seasonings available to you, from Asian Flair and Cajun to simple Salt, Pepper, and Butter. The coleslaw it comes with is also super flavorful, I'm always licking my plate clean! They also have some great fish tacos amongst other seafood choices. I really don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here. The cafe is not terribly large, but I've never had an issue finding a spot. They also have a small patio that is great during summer evenings. Everything is decorated with a Hawaiian theme and there's a nice relaxed atmosphere about the place. I've found it can get a little busy during the Friday lunch rush, but they're pretty efficient at getting your order out. What a great spot in North Phoenix. I read in the Arizona Republic a great article about "Maui's favorite" opening in Scottsdale, Thursday. I was so stoked, as this is one my all-time favorite spots for fish tacos. I even planned my day around eating fish tacos for lunch. We drove to 16640 N Scottsdale Rd, which is a hidden location off Bell, (not Frank Lloyd Wright as the AZ newspaper published). The OTHER item the AZ Republic author and editor missed is "Which Thursday were they opening?" We walked into the smell of fresh paint and a really friendly new owner apologizing that we were here too early. He was unaware the AZ Republic ran the article, but happy that we are DEFINITELY coming back as the Maui spot, named for the original owner's cat, is really incredible. Coconut is already painted on the wall and the surfboard shaped tables fill the restaurant which is larger than it's Maui parent. Unfortunately, Coconut's continues to be just "meh." I've been here a few times, and each time I leave without being wowed. This last time, I ordered coconut shrimp, the seafood salad, a side of clam chowder, and fries to split with my sister. The coconut shrimp were pretty good, but the sauce was very sweet. The fish (ono) on the salad, which we ordered in the butter, salt and pepper style (as advised by the cashier), was way overcooked and tough. The salad was just okay, and the dressing needlessly came in disposable plastic cups with lids even though we were dining in. The chowder was very average. The fries were really the only things that were good, however, someone advised that they normally come with seasoned salt, which they did not (we asked for some to sprinkle on top, which again came in a disposable plastic cup). We were with a group, so not exactly conducive to giving feedback to the manager. I wouldn't return. read more
